- Опубликовано: 11 фев 2022
- We visit the Alcobaça municpal market to shop for fresh fruit and veg and we find so much more. Like all Portuguese markets it is more like a huge community centre where friendly locals gather to socialise and exchange information. We get to try out our Portuguese and we learn a great new Portuguese recipe involving avacados and port wine!

I do love visiting local markets. Very impressed with Lee's Portuguese!
Thank you ☺️. It's such a great way to get a taste of local life, and all the delicious food of course! 😊
He did really well indeed..
Old man thought he'd meet Lee halfway by speaking spanish. That's what you're hearing, a mix of portuguese and spanish or, as we call it, portunhol.
I thought as much. I'm worried that I'm accidentally creating a hybrid pidgin mixture of the two languages which I don't want to do. It is a work in progress. 😬
@@FrugalTravellers Need not worry. Portunhol is a centuries old institution and even our most distinguished use it every now and then.
Hello Frugal Travelers! Thank you for showing me a great video! I really enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing! Have a nice day!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! We always love hearing such positive feedback! ~ Mandy
I’m Portuguese and, in my opinion, you’re doing very well with your Portuguese!
Muito obrigado, Ruth. 😊. We are learning and practicing as much as we can. 👍
I had a chuckle at the art work for Mandy's toilet segment!
Haha. Getting creative with our graphics. 😂
Lees doing fantastic with his Portuguese.
Cheers Ryan. I'm finding it tough to understand at times but I'm trying my hardest to improve. The longer we're here, the better it will get. 👍
We thought we would show a Portuguese market experience, and what the interactions with the locals are like. They tend to be very friendly and informative. We had fun trying to communicate in Portuguese and tried our best to translate everything that was said, but may have misunderstood at times. Please comment below with corrections or by adding any terms that could help us with our daily shopping. We'd love to learn more. 👍😊

Well impressed with your Portuguese, Lee 👌
@@isoldafont8571 Thanks Isolda. That's a year in Portugal with a good amount of time in COVID lockdown spent wisely. 😂😂. Needs improving though as I think there is a bit of Portunhol in there. 😂
You had the right type of attitude. Congratulations!
Just a suggestion, since you are leaning Portuguese on the way is to put two or three new words you have learnt at the end of your video with the correct pronunciation that will help people with their shopping/asking questions etc. Both captioned word and spoken words would be helpful.
From London Ontario CanadianPortuguese born and saw Miguel Azores it has been over 24 years since I’ve been there I really enjoyed your video your Portuguese was just awesome due to the Covid I’ve been avoiding going anywhere I’m self-employed Gardner and I work for elderly couples thank you for the beautiful video stay safe and God bless you guys
Obrigado Fernando. I'm glad you enjoy watching our Portugal videos. We love it here and enjoy showing this amazing country to people. All the best from 🇵🇹 😁 ~ Lee
It so nice that Portugal still has local markets as nowadays people mostly buy in supermarkets.
Let's hope the next generation will still have access to them.
Products are usually better quality and at least we know where the money goes to.
It's likely you guys may travel other countries but looks like your heart has chosen Portugal...
Thanks Sergio. The market scene seems to be alive and well in Portugal and they are buzzing even in the small towns. It's great to see the community coming together at them and they are full of life.
Long may they live on. 😍 ~ Lee
Obrigado por visitarem a minha cidade! Parabéns pelo vosso Português.
Muito obrigado, Luis. Adoramos nosso tempo em Alcobaça. é una cidade linda. Mais um vídeo de Alcobaça a seguir! 👍😁 ~ Lee
Bravo Lee! You are doing fantastic with the language.
Interested to hear if you tried the port and avocado. We drink white port and tonic water, very refreshing summer drink. White port a little hard to get here but we buy it when Dan Murphy's has stock.
Great market, fish looked good. Produce all looked so fresh too, with good prices.
Great video!
Thanks, Cindy. We haven't yet got hold of any white Ferreira port but when we do, we'll definitely sample it with sugar and avocado. We've since discovered it is a very old Portuguese recipe. I'm not a huge fan of the very sweet wines but I'll make an exception in the interest of scientific research. 😁 ~ Lee
Uncle Dan, helping every Australian get a taste of the rest of the worlds' alcoholic drinks AND making Woolworths/Endeavour Group shareholders a little bit wealthier. God bless him. 😁
@@-MacCat- I have a Dan Murphy card... went to a few tasting events when we were living in Perth. It was always fun to see the reactions of visitors from the UK when they walked inside one of the huge stores! 😃😁 ~ Mandy
@@FrugalTravellers Yes, the many "Temples of Uncle Dan" are a wonder to behold and deserve to be visited and taken advantage of by anyone who is fortunate enough to grace our great land and its plenty and diversity of alcohol.
By the by, my wife finds your "toilet" pieces useful and entertaining, and perhaps Lee might start a "bebida refrescante" piece for your posts? They would sort of go hand in hand 😏
First time on this channel, and I must say, Lee your Portuguese is great. Am an Angolan with Portuguese nationality who moved from Porto to Manchester, I love watching videos of people discovering/enjoying Portugal 🇵🇹.
Hi. Thanks for the nice compliment. We travelled through Angola 12 years ago and then I learnt some Portuguese before going to Brazil. Trying my best to improve here and really enjoy showing Portugal to people. Welcome to the channel. 👍😊 ~ Lee
love those yummy bread..
The bread was delicious! We'll have to try more of the amazing varieties to be found in Portugal! ~ Mandy
Thank you guys so much for the wonderful videos we really really love all of them!! I was born in Portugal (Sao Miguel) 50 or so years ago and moved to Canada 50 years ago when I was just a baby. Now my wife and I (she is from Colombia) are making our arrangements to move to Portugal within the next 2 years and retire there. Your videos on all your travels through Portugal have helped us make a decision on where to live . We have chosen Setubal!!! thank you again !! keep up the great work and enjoy your travels!!!! God Bless!!!!!!!!!
Hello Peter. Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us. Your story is amazing and we are so happy for you to be retiring back to Portugal. How exciting! Well done for choosing Setúbal. We were only there for two weeks but really felt comfortable there and the laid back vibe and general feel of the place really appealed to us.
We're so glad our videos have been of use to you and that you have gained some insight into what it is like here now. We wish you and your wife all the very best for a happy and healthy retirement here. 👍😊 ~ Lee and Mandy

We agree. All the Portuguese people we have met have been very friendly and helpful! ~ Mandy
Lee showing off again...Lol! I am really impressed and you are so right about the markets and it's a great way to practice your Portuguese. Lol Mandy's toilet segment!! Nice to see your smiles at the end!😃
Haha. Thank you, Tamara. I still have much to learn and am trying my best to understand. It's hard but very rewarding when people respond positively. 😊. Glad you liked Mandy's 🚽 segment. 😂
Love seeing the market from my hometown on RUclips:) just made my day
Awesome! We loved Alcobaça and the people there. Another video from there tomorrow. 👍😁~ Lee
How nice to hear all that Portuguese! x
The market is most definitely the place for total Immersion. 😁
Going to the market has been the best experience for us. Not only do we have a better chance at supporting local businesses and growers, but it forces us to have interactions in the local language. It is somewhat easy these days to go to a foreign location and insulate yourself due to the various communication and streaming services the Internet provides. I was just in Setúbal on Wednesday and was very impressed by the market. The locals claim it is the best in Portugal and I'm struggling to find a reason to not agree. I enjoyed the conversation Lee was having with the fellow selling the avocados and it is inspiring to see how well he can communicate after one year in country. It gives us a bit of hope.
Thanks, Todd. The market is most certainly a fantastic place to get the chance to interact with local people here. The experience between this and a supermarket is unfathomable. Even with some basic Portuguese people tend to be very patient and helpful and really appreciate the fact that you are showing respect by giving it a go. The Setúbal market is a real gem and a pleasure to spend time in, soaking up it's wonderful atmosphere. Enjoy! 👍😊 ~ Lee
I just read an article about your love story, your first meet in Nepal’ teahouse, your love note passed by travelers, your attitude about life... that’s really moved. I hope you will always love each other and travel to the every conner of the world.

I love farmers’ markets in Portugal. Wow! Lee speaks Portuguese pretty well. I am impressed with how Lee spoke Portuguese with the avocado man. Thank you for recommending Duolingo language application. I still find the Portuguese language to be difficult. The cheese, fruits and olives look so good. Thank you for sharing useful information to the frugal travel community.
Congratulations on your travel story appearing on CNN! This is huge! I love your travel stories and that you stay true to your heart. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Hi Sue, thank you so much for the lovely comment and compliments. ❤️. The markets really are amazing here with great produce and the friendly people make it a great experience. 👍. Love you for your passion and commitment 😊
Thank you so much for coming to our channel and watching. 😊. We'll be making a video soon about our time in Nepal. 🇳🇵🏔️❤️😁~ Lee
I think this is my favorite of all your videos! My friends who have traveled extensively in Portugal always emphasize how friendly and helpful the Portuguese people are! My Brazilian friend who is fluent in several languages has always told me that it is very difficult for English speakers to learn Portuguese as it is so idiomatic, but you both seem to have the basics down very well. LOL the best part was the mention of Ferreira port, which reminded me to head up to the kitchen and pour myself a glass of Ferreira port...in my case, Dona Antonia Tawny Reserve which IMHO is a fantastic buy. Based on the advice of that fellow, though...I need to try some of their white port...if I can find it in Indiana!
Thanks, Stephen. Your friends are so right about the friendliness and helpful Portuguese people. It's one of the major things that attract us to this country. Portuguese is a real challenge for us and I think the fact I speak some Spanish is both a help and a hindrance at times. If you are a port fan you would be in absolute heaven here. The quality and the price is incredible. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching. 👍😁 ~ Lee
Your language skills are really good! Bravo!!! I really enjoy watching your videos and the frugal travel tips. Heading to Portugal next week and can't wait to visit again.
Thanks Rita. We've been here a while now so are working hard to improve. Enjoy your trip to Portugal and don't forget to get into the markets. It's so much fun. 👍😁
Thank you for the market tour. The people are so lovely! And the food looks so fresh and delicious. Please keep the menus and the tinkle locations coming! Us gals always need a tinkle room 😀
We're so happy you enjoyed this video, violetgypsie, and that you mentioned two things very close to my heart... menus and free toilets! 😁 I was a bit worried no one else would find these things interesting, so it's great to hear your positive feedback! Thank you! 🙏😃 ~ Mandy

Lee, your Portuguese is terrific! Love the markets… an s especially the fellow telling you about the avocados with port. I love those types of interactions! Fun stuff. That is for the toilets info Mandy 😉
Cheers Jen. We are finding more and more that the markets are where we have those special moments when we get to interact with local people in a fun way (and learn more and more about Portuguese life). And the bonus is that there are always free toilets 😂 ~ Lee
Hi Lee and Mandy, long time no comment always watching though. Another great vlog! those fish markets in Portugal are amazing, wish we had more of them through out the UK (speaking as a fish lover) and that huge bag of olives.... what an absolute bargain! I hope you enjoyed your wonderful feast, Take care.
Thanks so much Karen. Great to hear from you. We love the markets here. I'm always quite daunted by the fish though. I love eating fish but am not to confident cooking it. So we tend to eat it when we go to restaurants. The Portuguese do it so well. 😊👍 ~ Lee

Thanks very much. Happy travels to you too 😊 ~ Lee
It's the area of Portugal we're interested in heading to as well so we're keen to see your experiences.
It's great to see, and hear, you having a good go at speaking Portuguese. Locals, and in particular the Portuguese and even more so in areas that are not "touristy", I am told, are extremely appreciative of foreigners making an effort to learn their language. It's not an easy one to learn, even for a naive Italian speaker that is also reasonable at Spanish, which I am.
We're now subscribed and thanks for your sharing!
Thank you, Mac Cat. Thanks to housesitting, we've been able to see a few different places in Portugal. We really like the Silver Coast and have made a few videos of this region now: Caldas da Rainha; Óbidos; A Dos Negros; Peniche; Baleal, Praia d'el Rei; Nazaré and Alcobaça... we're practically locals now 😃🤣
Lee is far more dedicated to learning languages than I am - his Spanish is pretty good, and he can speak some French and Russian, along with his Portuguese. I'm still ploughing through Spanish on Duolingo- will swap back to Portuguese as I keep speaking my few words of Portuguese with a Spanish accent!
We're so happy that you've subscribed and will be following our travels. Wishing you an excellent weekend! ~ Mandy
Hi
Visiting a local market is one of my favourite parts of any travel experience. I loved the segment about avacadoes. What an interesting man. A brief encounter resulting in a tasty Angolan dish and other great facts. Amazing! You can't put a price on that.
I am in awe of your language skills too.
Keep the videos coming.
I am interested to hear what plans you have for the future.
Hi Julie, Thanks for the lovely comment. It was a wonderful encounter with that man. These are the experiences we travel for so I wanted to include it all. I could have spoken to him for hours, he as so interesting.
We'll be house sitting our way around Portugal for the next few months and then will see if it's possible to travel further afield in the summer. Still got a bit more of Europe to see before the Americas. 😊 ~ Lee
