Hello dear friends thank you for sharing how we all support each other learning and growing through our experiences here in central Portugal. Simba and Micky have settled in with us and the chicks. Thank you so much for all the love and care you give. We know where your secret fishing spot is lol elderfower grows there nice spot. Much Love Lisa & colin
Awwwh bless you Lisa! much love to you both!! I am thrilled for Mickey and Simba, they are two of the luckiest lambs in the world going with you both! Hehehe, you know my fishing spot!!! Shhh, don’t tell anyone 🤣 Yes, I’ve seen elderflower there too!!! perhaps some good content for a future video, elderflower wine! 💕 🥂 See you both soon!!! 💕

Bless you my friend, thank you so much for watching alongside us, thank you for commenting. Yeah, the quiet, tranquil Portugal. Much love my friend, Joseph.
I have a inca model 4 cherry pitter you could have but I wouldn't know how to get it to you . I love what you all are doing there it's wonderful...cheers!
Fantastic your love for your family animals and your new found home. Your farm is very tidy i don't miss any of you vids.Wishing all things nice for you and family, God bless you all.
if it is me, I will have a small milk farm to produce both milk and biogas. With biogas I will produce electricity, use in heating and will use in kitchen too. Grow different type vegetables and tropical fruits like Rambutan, lychee, Mango Mangosteen, Langsat, Guava, Logan, Sugar Apple, Papaya etc.
There's a 3rd option (since your cherries are pesticide-free) to sell the cherries but requires having your own truck and contacts, meaning you load your truck and transport them yourself to a different country and deliver personally to your contact (buyer) you can get more per kilo (up to 5€ or more) but also you have some more expenses, know some farmers that own big farms who do it like that. If you grow your product in Portugal but then you sell it abroad then its a good idea, to sell on the local market can be optimal or not depending like Joseph said on a number of variables and the produce (having a niche or not), you just need to rely on basic economics and a proper business plan (but planning never suites nature I can tell you that), of course, being a seasoned farmer doesn't hurt ;)) Another great vid guys enjoyed it very much.. keep them comin
Thank you so much for that VERY informative comment my friend! You are SO right, nature does not like plans haha!! We did consider taking the crop back to our home town in England as we know a fruit seller there who could get top price for them, but the problem before would have been transporting whilst we still need to harvest, we had an issue a few years back with employing people in (lets just say we probably will not be doing that again) so now we just keep the harvesting in the family, but if you could get some temporary workers to get the harvest done (which you trust of course) then yes that would be a wonderful idea!! Thank you so much again for the lovely comment my friend! Thank you for watching, it means the world to us! Joseph
Hey Joseph, thank you very much for your videos [well filmed, edited and presented...some great music choices as well]...you come across as very sincere and honest in sharing your knowledge and experience[s]...we are thinking of moving to Portugal [from Phuket] and so your work is very useful, engaging and enlightening...going to go for the D7 visa so watching lots of RUclips stuff...and yours stand out in many positive ways
I truly admire you -- you are pursuing a great, productive lifestyle -- and having fun, enjoying yourselves! It appears that your poultry is not fed with "mad-cow-type of dry rations". They feed themselves with natural, healthy stuff. Like in the time of our great-grand-fathers. I must confess, my brothers and I own 3 nice farms. In some of them, there are houses just expecting to be refurbished . Located not far from 2 major cities and around , respectively, 20 mnutes and 45 minutes from a gorgeous, famous beach. Unfortunately, I only visited the properties about 25 years ago. I was just a small kid -- I'm not much into farms, plants, trees, etc.

Oooh can’t wait to sample that cherry liquor 😍 it’s nice to see your lambs going to good homes of people you know will care for them as you have done. You should really only water your veggies early morning or after sunset as the water that settles on big leaves can often act like a magnifying glass and scorch them 😎
Hello Christine, I have a nice tall glass ready for you here hehehe!!! yes, we water just as I let the chickens out in the morning and in the next few weeks we will begin to start twice daily watering, the second being as I shut the chickens away for the night! I am so pleased for the first two little lambs, for we did get quite attached to them, hahaha! Thank you for another lovely comment Christine! 💕 Joseph
Ooooh now that is a good idea - I have never heard of that before, thank you so much for the suggestion! I will definitely look to try this one my friend, Joseph
Thanks, again! Another great video to start my day with peace. Your videos are great for my mental health. 🙂 Very interesting info about the orchard and marketing. Alex

Another awesome video Joseph - so lovely to see Mickey and simba going off to a new home and thanks for a lovely day picking - I really loved it - have to get my veg garden and tractor sorted next year after your fantastic example. Thanks to all the family for a great video and smashing day today.
Hi Joe ,we have just watched your lovely vidio, as always most enjoyable , you must save me some of the beautiful drinks you & Lloyd have made lol 👍😀sounds very tasty , take care all of you , love from us both xxxx👍👏👏 ❤️💙🍷
Thanks for another lovely video. That cherry liquor and cordial are going to be spectacular! I made a guava liquor from our guavas and am enjoying it with a bit of tonic water. Can’t beat eating and drinking from your own harvest. Best to you and your family.
Ooooooh, now that sounds pretty good to me! I wish I could taste some! Best to you and yours too my friend, thanks for the lovely comment again! Much love!
I make cherry bomb. I put up the cherries after picking, cherries, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar, fill to 1 in from top. Lid and cap; hot water bath. Put it away until Thanksgiving. Makes a wonderful cherry liqueur. The cherries: i make a buttercream filling and dip them in dark chocolate...delicious treat!
We love watching your video's about running a farm. It's been realy helpfull for us. We love the farm life and we hope we can have our own farm in the future. Thanks Joseph!
Hi guy's, very pleasant to watch and interesting info about things always. Me and my daughter are driving down to Portugal in my van this July. To check arround in your area, maybe ending up to buy a piece of land lol... Regards Rickard from Sweden 🇸🇪
What led to you and your family coming to Portugal? Did you have experience in farming prior to? Would be interested in seeing/learning more about the commercial aspects of your chickens as well.
Hello Jerrie! My parents were retiring here and it just so happened to be at the right time for me in my life, in regards to relationships and work etc. So I tagged along with them and eventually met Mariana out here! best decision of my life for sure! We had never been farmers before, but I have always been a lover of agriculture! Glad to hear you would be interested in a chicken video - because it is on the cards!!! I was already planning what I could or should say hehe!! much love my friend and thank you for the lovely comment! Joseph
I really enjoyed this video, it popped up in my recommended and I must admit I am so happy it did. Loved your delivery, what a natural. New subscriber. Thank you for the fun times ahead.
Its way easier to pitcherries with a chopstick, just stick it by pointing it at the middle while holding it within a fist, youll get the hang of it. Works the majority of the time.
Lovely video Joe xx so looking forward to the cherry liquor but even more so to you and mariana becoming parents and giving us another little grandchild ♥ 🤱
It was lovely to see Micky and Simba go off together on their new adventure to a loving home. I have to agree, a cherry pitter would be a valuable asset to your liquer making...😄😄
Awwwh, you're not wrong Sheila! I was so thrilled with that outcome for them! Bless their hearts! Hahaha, you can be sure that we will invest in one of those relatively quickly HAHA!!!
Joe, would you be able to recommend a channel similar to yours that showcases homestead properties with a sea view? We like quite a few of the central Portugal properties you've investigated but would be really interested to compare them with homesteads closer to the western shoreline. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure with us. So inspiring and informative for those looking to follow.
If I knew any I would love to recommend them, unfortunately I do not... But, watch this space, with Marianas seaside background I am considering advertising a few soon!!
@@Farmerforfun Oh great, we'll be looking forward to those! We had seen a couple of homesteads with distant views of the ocean a few years ago, but haven't come across many recently. Love your vids and would be interested to hear your take on farming/homesteading in sea-breeze environments. Eagerly encouraging the considerations on this!!
What a wonderful time ...thanks for showing how to do the cordial cherry lequior which i think I will try. But I have to buy some cherries here. Have a good week ahead!
That little stream for the hens is perfect!! I've just come across your channel, after searching for property in Portugal and already im sold after 5 mins.
Hello Allison! Awwwh, that’s amazing! are you looking around our neck of the woods? (Fundão) Yes, it saves me a lot of lugging water containers around! 💕 Joseph
I am pleasantly surprised by the numbers in this video, as I just stumbled upon a forum thread about the feasibility of farming in Portugal, by a group of British expats, and they were all doom and gloom. They made it sound like Portuguese farmers basically starve!
Hi there, you are so nice, good to see. Joseph did you say your farm was 1 acre? seems so much larger. FOr a minute there I thought you werre giving away your dogs, maybe you fostser dogs, never understood that. Thank goodness you were referring to the lambs that should enjoy their lives as lawn mowers.
Thank you Roelien and Rudi for your lovely comment - You truly brought a big smile to my face this afternoon! Thank you for watching my friends, Joseph
Thanks for this lovely encouraging channel. Hi from Germany. As a professional gardener and graduated biologist me too I would like to live in such a place. My main project are different varieties of of Yacon plants (Smallanthus sonchifolius) from the Andes. A newly discovered superfood. Getting a tuber harvest of 10 kg from one plant. They should not get temperatures above 30 degrees. How is your climate in summer? My 2 dogs are hungarian sheepdogs rescued from Hungary. Also I used to have an icelandic sheepdog for 13 years. She was great in chasing out birds from my garden and catching mice. Traditionally they protect lambs from avian predators. In childhood I lived in Chile for 3 years and learned some Spanish. So I can understand a bit of portugués. Many friendly greetings and waiting for your answer.
I think I've said that already but I'll say it again. you have a beautiful farm in a beautiful environment and really great that you also do this biologically respect. if I ever have the opportunity to do the same then you are my example I wish you a nice weekend greetings from the Netherlands
You always write such lovely comment Chris! Thank you so much as always my friend! I’m not very good at this type of lifestyle but I keep trying new things, some work and some don’t - either way it’s fun hehe!! thank you for watching and commenting Chris, means the world to me! It really does! Have a marvellous weekend, Joseph!
I mentioned this on a previous video, not sure if you already filmed this video before I commented last time, however; if you use a bottle with an opening slightly smaller than the whole cherry and use a chopstick or straw or any other long straight small-ish object you can push out the pits really quickly by placing the cherry on the bottle& holding between pointer finger and thumb whilst pushing the chopstick through from the stem part, at least it's faster than cutting with a knife.
Awwwh, thank you my friend, I did actually try this and it worked great on the bigger cherries but not on the smaller ones, so I just bit the bullet and pitted them the hard way, hehe! Thank you so much, Joseph.
Hello Joseph, I am so so happy that your video appeared in my RUclips feed. I watched a number of your videos today. Amazing content. Fantastic video production skills too. I'd love to visit your farm one day. Keep up the good work! Warm regards from London. Best, TJ
Awwwh that’s amazing Celia! I wish you all the best of luck with your move, if you ever need anything please let me know... Are you moving to central? Much love, Joseph.
You have a nice farm! I spent summers at my grandparents farm. Brings back a lot of great memories. How many acres do you have? I live in Manitoba Canada (winters are very cold -20 C or colder!!. Portugal looks like a nice place to live!
Awwwh, those sound like wonderful memories Larry, I’ll bet you spent many days fruit picking and seeing livestock with your grandparents. Thank you for sharing that! We have 4 hectare, which is just under 10 acre, I believe! Portugal is lovely, I highly recommend hehe! Joseph.

Can't wait to meet you too, next time we are in Fundao we will pop by.One day I definitely want you to come to our land so you can show us what we can forage, I loved that video. Looking very much forward to meeting you guys, I am not a great forager, but I do love to try haha!!! See you soon! Much love, Joseph.
We love watching your videos! Have learnt a lot of things from you guys 😁 Did you rescue both of your dogs out where you are or did you already have them? They’re adorable how they follow you around the farm 🥰
Hello Ebony! Thank you so much, that really means the world to us, you are so lovely! Yes! They were both rescues, they found us hehe! Mitzy was a tiny puppy stealing clothes off our washing line, eventually we managed to entice her close enough with some food, she never left since! Lilly I found on a bridge in the scorching sun as a tiny puppy a couple of years back, both were unchipped and looked unloved... That has changed now though, they are my best friends and I love them with all my heart (Tiger was also a stray, the little white and grey cat, she just turned up one day haha!) Much love my friends, thank you for watching and thank you for the lovely comments! Joseph.
Yes I know them very well, Ken filmed a few of his vlogs at my farm, one was regarding turkeys at Christmas, the other was an interview with me and my family last year! Good people who I hold dear to my heart! 💕 🙏 😊
Hello Joseph. We just bought a place in tabua near Coimbra and I really want a cherry tree. How would I get a drafted tree and for it to bear sooner than 7 years?
Haha!! We try to keep it as stress free as possible, our line of work in the U.K. used to be very stressful, so we are enjoying the contrary right now haha! Much love my friend, thank you for the lovely comments as always! Joseph
Yeah, you can buy boxes to build up but only from one shop, unfortunately they don’t have any of the wording on the side that shows the area the cherries have come from - A way for the shops to cash in I think 😂 💕 🍒
Ok. Lets say I bought 3 acres, the soil is junk all rocky and stuff. I go to the hardware shop and buy truckloads of topsoil to give me about 6 inches of decent soil on the top. What could I grow? what makes/sells for a high price? What can survive the Portuguese heat? and if I leave my property for a month to visit family what could survive having little or no maintenance? these are all going through my mind.
The truckloads of topsoil would cost more than the land itself😎 is a lot of land for sale in central Portugal, mostly abandoned because the younger generation moved out to the cities/another country and the older generation is dying. You just need to search and take your time to find good land.
Hello there Graham, what a wonderful interesting comment my friend! This depends on a few variables, for example Fundão is the capital for cherries, this is largely in part to the cold winds coming off the Serra Da Estrela to the north of us, the cherries need this cold breeze in the winter to strengthen them in the spring! They also need heavy irrigation in the summer months, we have already started our irrigation now. There are other areas where different plants thrive, just twenty miles out south the ground is extremely sandy and would be unsuitable for the stones fruit trees (they would grow but not in the same quality as they would here). Oranges (well, citrus in general actually) however do not survive well on our side of the mountain. The country is so diverse and varies widely in fertility / soil types / water quantity etc that it would really require a lot more information on a farm to answer this question fairly and do the answer justice. I hope that helps my friend, I’m not an expert by any means but this is certainly an opinion I believe to be very accurate. Thanks so much for such an interesting comment and I hope to have shed a little light in the subject! Have a great week ahead! Joseph
Great video!! You have such a lovely place! Are there farmers markets in Portugal where u can sell your produce? Would the extra effort make a bit more money? We’ve got dreams of moving to Portugal one day! Much love from Japan 🙏

Hello Joseph, I enjoy your videos very much. We are planning to buy a farm in Portugal (currently living in the UK). Could you tell us what you do for a living? I am interested because we are planning to do our current work (translating) remotely and live on a farm there. Do you think it is possible to move to a farm full time and work remotely?
Hello there! I certainly plan to, although mine are not dairy breeds, they are meat breeds. This year I was unable to milk them as they had a one off vaccination from the vet, which meant I could not milk them. Next year I hope to!

Its way easier to pitcherries with a chopstick, just stick it by pointing it at the middle while holding it within a fist, youll get the hang of it. Works the majority of the time.
Ahhh, that’s a good idea! I will definitely try that!!! thank you my friend! Joseph. 💕
Lovely video Joe xx so looking forward to the cherry liquor but even more so to you and mariana becoming parents and giving us another little grandchild ♥ 🤱
Bless you mum! The liqueur will be ready a little while before the baby though haha! Much love!
Awwwh, thank you Jeanne, I wish you were closer we could share cherries and have a glass together!
That little stream for the hens is perfect!!
I've just come across your channel, after searching for property in Portugal and already im sold after 5 mins.
Hello Allison! Awwwh, that’s amazing! are you looking around our neck of the woods? (Fundão)
Yes, it saves me a lot of lugging water containers around! 💕 Joseph
@@Farmerforfun so far feeling drawn to Central Portugal. It's quite reasonable. Have a family member in the Algarve so keeping that in mind also.
yeah super sweet little stream
I am pleasantly surprised by the numbers in this video, as I just stumbled upon a forum thread about the feasibility of farming in Portugal, by a group of British expats, and they were all doom and gloom. They made it sound like Portuguese farmers basically starve!
this is a beautiful farm/ homestead and it is very organized. How many hours a day do you spend keeping it this way since your help is limited?
Hi there, you are so nice, good to see. Joseph did you say your farm was 1 acre? seems so much larger. FOr a minute there I thought you werre giving away your dogs, maybe you fostser dogs, never understood that. Thank goodness you were referring to the lambs that should enjoy their lives as lawn mowers.
Very informative! Thank you for sharing.
Hello there Andries, thank you so much for watching my friend, thank you!!! Joseph
Great video as usual. Hey! I've noticed that your sound quality is excellent. What microphone do you use?
Joseph to you and your family well done for the effort it is amazing to see what one can achieve..thnx for sharing your journey
Thank you Roelien and Rudi for your lovely comment - You truly brought a big smile to my face this afternoon! Thank you for watching my friends, Joseph
Great vlog, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Elma! Thank you for watching! Joseph
Best, TJ
How did you make that first shot of you,,,a tilt track shot? Well Done !
Beautiful place, you guys are doing a excellent job. Soon I will be moving to Portugal 🇵🇹
Awwwh that’s amazing Celia! I wish you all the best of luck with your move, if you ever need anything please let me know... Are you moving to central? Much love, Joseph.
@@Farmerforfun I don’t know exactly where, but for sure I will contact you guys. Thanks a lot ☺️
love the info keep it coming m8
You have a nice farm! I spent summers at my grandparents farm. Brings back a lot of great memories. How many acres do you have? I live in Manitoba Canada (winters are very cold -20 C or colder!!. Portugal looks like a nice place to live!
Awwwh, those sound like wonderful memories Larry, I’ll bet you spent many days fruit picking and seeing livestock with your grandparents. Thank you for sharing that! We have 4 hectare, which is just under 10 acre, I believe! Portugal is lovely, I highly recommend hehe! Joseph.
What a beautiful place 🥰 nature is calling me big time! Would love to sell my house and move to Portugal,
Nice . Good man .
I know cherry pitters exist in USA but I am also sure you can find some olive pitters that get rid of your pits really fast and easily.
Such a pleasure to watch you work Joseph😁 and congratulations to you and Marianna
Hey Luke and Sarah! your ears must’ve been burning - Me and Peter were singing your praises today!!! 💕 Look forward you meeting you both! Joseph
@@Farmerforfun They weren't burning but that is so nice of you. Can't wait to meet you too, next time we are in Fundao we will pop by.One day I definitely want you to come to our land so you can show us what we can forage, I loved that video. I found it so sweet in this video that you touched your belly when you said you were having a baby😁
@@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife Awwwwwwwh, what a lovely thing to say, hehe! I did not notice my hand on my belly until you said it!!! I guess I did it without thinking hehe!!! Looking very much forward to meeting you guys, I am not a great forager, but I do love to try haha!!! See you soon! Much love, Joseph.
A natureza sempre foi a medicina pela gente e os animais .
Adoro isso! medicina pelo o coração e para a alma tambem!
Have you tried using an olive pit tool?
I hear they work on cherries too
We love watching your videos! Have learnt a lot of things from you guys 😁
Did you rescue both of your dogs out where you are or did you already have them? They’re adorable how they follow you around the farm 🥰
Hello Ebony! Thank you so much, that really means the world to us, you are so lovely! Yes! They were both rescues, they found us hehe! Mitzy was a tiny puppy stealing clothes off our washing line, eventually we managed to entice her close enough with some food, she never left since! Lilly I found on a bridge in the scorching sun as a tiny puppy a couple of years back, both were unchipped and looked unloved... That has changed now though, they are my best friends and I love them with all my heart (Tiger was also a stray, the little white and grey cat, she just turned up one day haha!)
Much love my friends, thank you for watching and thank you for the lovely comments!
Joseph.
Joseph , do you know Ken and Gina nearby where youre at , their channel
is called OK Portugal .
This is called "no stress" farming.👍
Haha!! We try to keep it as stress free as possible, our line of work in the U.K. used to be very stressful, so we are enjoying the contrary right now haha! Much love my friend, thank you for the lovely comments as always! Joseph
I was like what? you wanted to buy them PRE folded? thats insane... so easy to assemble (cheaper) and takes up way less space until you need em. :D
Yeah, you can buy boxes to build up but only from one shop, unfortunately they don’t have any of the wording on the side that shows the area the cherries have come from - A way for the shops to cash in I think 😂 💕 🍒
Nothing wrong with some good old cherrypickin..
My favourite thing to do, nom, nom, nom 🤤 💕 🍒 🌳
Enjoy and have a nice weekend.TAke care.Kind regards.Mario.
Joseph
Would love to know what else grows in that region of the country?!
Great video!! You have such a lovely place! Are there farmers markets in Portugal where u can sell your produce? Would the extra effort make a bit more money?
We’ve got dreams of moving to Portugal one day! Much love from Japan 🙏

Hehehe!! I’m super glad you like them my friend! I just finished editing it, I hope you like it!!! 💕 Joseph
How many hours per week on average do you and your family put into the cherry orchard?
I am a cherry monster😋I would be eating more than pitting.
Hahahaha!!! my problem exactly!!! but believe me, you start to eat less three weeks into the harvest hahaha 😂 💕 Much love, Joseph
Maravilha de vida.
Muito obrigado, beijinhos! Joseph
Hello Joseph -dont you take milk from your sheeps ???dont you produce your own cheese???Very nice cherries!!!
Hello there! I certainly plan to, although mine are not dairy breeds, they are meat breeds. This year I was unable to milk them as they had a one off vaccination from the vet, which meant I could not milk them. Next year I hope to!
