On the Keefe debate... I'm with you Dave. We're all entitled to our own opinions. But Dave is absolutely right. It shouldn't have taken Keefe up to game 5 to figure it out. Game 5 worked keep it that way! Lines should have been figured out way earlier on.
Keefe had a good run at it, the Leaf's management has been extremely loyal to him for 8 YEARS! The team's talent is there, what's needed is a new voice and direction from an established coach
We are now heading towards year 11 with Shanahan at the helm. - No team in the NHL tolerates losing in the first round like the Leafs. - Besides all losses to the Bruins, the loss to Montreal was shrugged off. Fans aren't respected, the losing in the playoffs is unacceptable. Every year, same results.
A few trades I'd try to make are, 1. Marner to Buffalo for Tage and Levi, you get your second line center with size who's not afraid to go to the net, and a possible number one goalie of the future just in case of Woll's injury history keeps him from becoming a true #1. 2. Liljegren, Robertson, 1st, 3rd, and two 5ths to Calgary for Weager and a 2025 2nd round pick. Leafs get a top line right hand shot d man, who can run PP 1, who scored 20g this year and is locked up long term. And the early second round pick [which is like a late first] could be used for a future trade or kept to help build up your prospect pool.
@@rickbengle5240 Calgary is just starting their rebuild and a 1st round pick, a third round pick, and two 5ths along with Liljegren who is a rfa right shot d man along with Robertson who scored 17 goals in 52 games this year is a massive haul for someone coming out of their prime when they'll be ready to contend again in five years. And for Buffalo, they can't even make the playoffs, which Marner is best at, being a 100pt guy who plays on the top PP and PK unit. He had 85pts this year in just 69 games, which put him on pace for 102pts this year. Buffalos best players only got 59pts, Tage included. They never even broke 60. Marner was way better than that, 40% better than that, which is huge by nhl standards. You know probably your right, why in the world would Toronto do that, Tage and Levi wouldn't be enough, throw in your first too and then Mabey they'll think about it.
@@rickbengle5240 They can circle all they want, he's signed for next year and wants to stay, he doesn't have to go anywhere, until next season if him or the team can't find the right deal and place for him long term. Probably no way he would go to Buffalo anyways, they haven't made the playoffs in 13yrs, what a joke, and then to laugh about bringing in a top five right winger in on a trade? Its an attitude like that is why you can't make the playoffs.
Looks like they will play it back except for the coach. "Management will speak on Friday". Shanny stays and Marner stays. Same old crap next year boys and girls.
I for one am glad you pushed back on the scapegoat narrative. As a long time Leafs fan, I no there is no foundation in accusations of the Toronto media scapegoating players and running them out of town. Keefe deserves credit for owning up to his failures. That said, he has proven that he can't hold players accountable and get them to play right. How long do you keep your job when you fail 80% of the time and your one success is incredibly modest? Here is an even harder question than the PP. Why was the team so much better without Matthews than with him? The change in play happened when Matthews went out. Matthews goes out and suddenly the Leafs play like a real playoff team. They were suffocating in games five and six. He returns and it is overall, more of the same. Former Leafs are treated like gods and they didn't win any championships. The names of players who didn't win anything are hanging from the rafters, no one is allowed to wear their number. You think Marner isn't treated like a god most of the time? Really? When he stops in at a Tim's for a large double double, is everyone there fawning over him or are they giving him a piece of their mind. They didn't push him hard on the contract. What were the going to do, the team depended on him for everything? They made a Matthews PP and a Marner PP and the Marner one was better. Number one guy on the PK. Top line, toughest competition. If they made Marner sit even a few games they couldn't afford to sign him at all that season and the team wouldn't have made the playoffs. They had zero leverage. Kind of like they have no leverage now if they want to trade him. Gardener, Kadri, Kessel, Phaneuf... I am confused, I thought you opened by saying the media doesn't scapegoat people. Everyone is calling for him to get traded. Are you sure? Is Treliving calling for that? Shanahan? Pelley? Those are the people whose opinions count. What to do about Tavares, there really isn't much of anything they can do with him. He has a NMC and a young family he isn't going to move. He likely runs out his contract and re-signs for less. Beating Toronto gives teams some sort of power. Or maybe the team is closer than you think. Maybe if they had a coach who forced them to play right they, in the words of Terry Malloy, could have been a contender. They wouldn't have Shanahan speak then fire him. Like it or not, I don't. They are rolling it back again.
The common Denominator is Shanny for the last 8 years. He is the first domino to fall and then let the new guy bring in his own coach, players and other staff.
On Marner .... its not that I don't understand the blowback, and I don't think he should have said it, but have none of you ever said the wrong thing? Yes he had a S*&t series, but can we look at what he was trying to say? What I hear is that Toronto fans love their hockey team. He's a Toronto boy, playing at home and is commenting on the privileged position he has. Did he express that the wrong way ... absolutely! But Mitch is not comfortable with the media, never has been. However, I do think Marner needs to go ... you're not dumping Matthews, your best player, you just signed Nylander long term with a NTC, and Tavares has one year left on an untradeable contract. Marner's the guy and the savings should be spent on a top two and top four d-man.
Everyone knows he meant that the players are idolized here. Disingenuous to contort the meaning just to have something polarizing to talk about. Just pointing out the obvious
Yeah, and then they wonder why the players think the media is against them. Anyone trying to stir up crap by taking the quote out of context clearly lacks self-awareness.
Ok Guys... as Mitch Marner is roasted on a spit and being run out of town. This guy is a Hockey Player... Media complains that they get BLAND MILK TOAST RESPONSES... when a guy says something he feels he gets roasted. The quote raised my eyebrows as well but is IT NOT TRUE????
On Tavares ... trading JT now is a subtraction game. It will cost big time to get rid of him with a year left, and is that the right long term play? I watch him and I still see a useful player. Good in the faceoff circle, great hands, accountable. At the right price, he could be part of a 3-4 year plan. Would he take a big haircut to play out his career as a leaf? That's a conversation worth having. And if you dump him, not only will it cost in assets, but we'll probably have to retain half his salary and then replace the 65 points he put up on the board this year. With everything wrong with this roster, you're not going to fix it in one year. If you could extend Tavares for $3-4M, that would free up $7-8M after next season to add two good players or one elite player and strengthen the roster again. Tavares left money on the table to join the Leafs and help win a cup. He's done well here financially ... my bet is he still has that burning desire to help bring a cup to Toronto.
Keefe should not have been re-upped by Treliving.... Was i the only one that saw that... you had a THREE HEADED SERPENT.... 2 Big Heads and one small one--- SHANAHAN DUBAS keefe---- When Dubas Head was cut... treliving should have placed his own guy there... But HE did not... bad mistake... Now 2 heads need to go... Shanahan and Keefe... Then Treliving places the right coach((( should have been Roy))) Who WINS the jersey...
He didn’t choose his words wisely but in NO WAY did Mitch call themselves Gods for crying out loud. He pretty much was saying they are treated like gods by the management and the fan base. He’s not wrong they are and would be even more so if they win the cup. The sad thing is with them knowing that not sure how the heck these guys don’t do whatever it takes to win a cup. They all would be treated like Gods and legends no doubt.
Thinking Keefe coached a good series is laughable. Second worst PP and PK total of all playoff teams. That’s coaching. How the team came together and played tighter defensively… they were doing that pretty well all series they just had strong goaltending in 5 and 6 and still barely squeaked out wins.
Dave is right. It was like Keefe was waiting for the PP to fix itself.

MLSE is the slowest moving organization in the NHL, they operate on a guaranteed profit and are reluctant to mess with their bottom like.
I suspect if the Leafs had scored in OT in game 7 the Locked on Bruins would be having almost the same discussion. Fine lines in the NHL.
