      I loved the Byram trade for Buffalo when I heard about it.
      Maybe I’m missing something because I don’t know the centre he was traded for very well, he’s probably a very useful player but I know Byram and I think he will improve greatly as well, he’s just getting warmed up in the league

      Just look at why Edmonton is so prolific on their PP. Draisaitl on one side, McDavid on the other, and at the point, they have a D-man that shoots missiles in Evan Bouchard. When's the last time we can say the Leafs have had that type of weapon on the blueline?

    It's irrelevant what Mitch is. What the Core is , is too expensive to build a solid team with good balance and depth. You can't RESIGN, it does absolutely nothing to correct the salary structure which is the root of the problem.

    The Hallmark of good management in any business is Planning and Anticipation--- The Leafs are in the Buy High Sell Low territory and that is not good management. The time to do this Marner thing was last summer. Now teams are laying in waiting and Leafs dealing from position of weakness.
    Some Trades:
    1) Seattle--- Leafs get Shane Wriight and a Number 1 Pick in 2025 and Leafs Retain Salary. ( Seattle could bundle in their best RHD Prospect ) Sign and Trade
    2) Arizona--- Make Mathews Jealous. Take Cooley and a Pick 1st Round 2025 /.... Leafs Retain Salary--- Sign and Trade
    Both 1 and two could work well for the Leafs
    I would only give a Prospect on the rise and a pick. I would not give a star
    Zegras could be part of a package...

      People are drastically underestimating his trade value like big time per insiders there are tons of teams calling right now . There will be cup contenders who get eliminated this year looking for something to push them over the edge just because everyone thinks it didint work here does not mean it won't work elsewhere on a deeper team with less pressure believe me if they trade him the return will be a good one at the least also tavares and reilly should be traded first 😂

    Oh boy, here comes all the talk about putting more money and dollars into finding a “good defense partner” for Morgan Reilly again as has been the case for the last 6 years….
    There is not a defender on the planet can cure Reilly of his weaknesses or cover up for all of Reilly’s lack of defensive awareness.
    I wish the Lears would fix the problem by getting rid of Reilly instead and start with promoting McCabe and Benoit to the 1st like duty role.
    If Reilly was as good as everyone’s says he is then why is the PP one of the worst in the League?
    He is grossly overpaid for what he brings to the ice. He might as well play Left Wing.

  • @davidjohnson-fw5co

    Leafs 1 for 21 on the powerplay in the playoffs. Their cap is spent on all the players who were on the ice during those dismal powerplays. Florida puts 4 PP goals by Boston last game. Leafs spending a lot of money on playoff duds. Big changes are needed or expect the same again next year

  • @peterrobertson2580
    @peterrobertson2580 6 месяцев назад

    You can talk about the three options on the table and they are all legit. But if the Leafs want to win a cup in the next two-three years, Marner HAS to go this off season and its rooted in roster construction and cap management. The Leafs need a top two and a top four defender. I think you guys agree. They're not getting out of the second round without that. That takes maybe $15M. Brodie is on his way out which provides $5M for table stakes.
    Tavares is the other piece - clearly, the leafs need to get out from under that deal. I don't think he's tradeable without assets, salary retention and low expectations about what comes back in return. That's a trade that would look worse than Marner's. I just don't see that the immediate benefits of that move would be worth it. Marner provides close to $11M to start to rebuild the Leafs roster NOW and the more time we spend getting on with it, the more we squander the productive life of Nylander, Matthews and Rielly.
    As you mention, the trade for Marner may not look great - maybe we could get a proven top 4 defender or scoring winger and replenish a high draft pick or two. You guys mentioned the Blackhawks potentially having interest to pair Marner with Bedard - maybe you get a minute muncher like Seth Jones in return. Hell, Marner could hoist a Cup there! But the prize is the cap flexibility NOW to go get a guy like Montour, Pesce or Tanev. Knowing that Tavares comes off after next season, it lets them reload again in 2025, when they might have a shot at an Ekblad, Provorov, Theodore or Chychrun.
    The point is that there is no time ... this decision should have been taken two years ago. At the very latest it should have been done after last season. If yu let Marner play out the season, you can say with 120% confidence that you have done nothing of note to advance the chances of the Leafs winning a cup. It is priority #1 for this team if they're serious about wining a Cup.

But what sadly comes to mind is my years of playing street hockey for fun! After 82 games per season, Millions of dollars in costs, salaries, maintenance, travel charges, food costs, equipment replacement. 2023-2024 season came down to a line I have use many many a time playing street hockey for fun. NEXT GOAL WINS. Good thing playing is still fun, but than as a fan we aren't playing are we, nor are we getting paid. Look, Marner can’t stay. We can’t afford him, and like you pointed out, he crumbles and ghosts under pressure, which is usually when you need him most.
    The question we need to ask is what our goal is to get rid of him. Do we want to get good return, or are we content to have the open cap space? That will dictate what our next moves are.
    Also as a former flames fan, you can’t compare the gaudreau situation with this. Gaudreau leaving crumbled the flames because he was their top forward, and because other key players were all leaving at the same time. Marner is a good player, but he isn’t the heart of our offence. He’s number 3, maybe 4, and the players above him are all locked in long term. The leafs will be fine if Marner leaves.

      @jlove8445 6 месяцев назад +1

      I agree with you, but right after Leafs fans mention adding a top defensman it (usually) is about acquiring that top defencemen to play with Morgan Reilly (as has been for half a decade now).
      The defender we speak of will be worse playing with the defensively/physically weak Reilly so there’s no point unless the defender is placed in a top role with another defensively brave player and McCabe-Benoit are behind that pairing.
      And scenerio where Reilly is first Line defender sabotages the entire defence core. And keep in mind, even if the Golden Boy was paid like a 3rd line defender he still couldn’t quarterback the Power Play because teams know he will never be a shooting threat and the Power play would stay as is, which is awful.
      Oh ya and that 3rd line defender would come at 7.5 until 2030!
      Eventually Leafs fans will realize about him and look back at what an impediment he has been to icing a better all around team

      What’s even more amazing to me is he’s literally the Golden Boy in this city while he makes 70%- 75% of what the core 4 makes Lol and he can be as defensively unreliable as he wants to..
      I call him the Teflon Don because no criticism sticks to him.
      The core 4 are jealous of him flyin under the radar as he does while earning large cash.
      Remember when he cross checked that Ottawa player for the suspension? That came a week after he did a similar thing to Islanders player that scored the game winner. That’s him frustrated at himself, he’s beginning to snap because he makes these huge mistakes when the game is on the line, just like the OT winner in game 7, only he didnt cross check Pasta after the goal this time.
      He’s no Montour, let’s put it that way, and our PP is horrific since he’s no threat to shoot

      @@jlove8445100% agree again with you. I’ve been a Leaf fan for 42 years now. I pissed off too and get emotional about what needs to be done. Not saying Marner isn’t a problem, but there’s more to it than that. People need to take a step back and look at this team from a bird’s eye view. There’s worse issues than Marner, but people want a fall guy. I just don’t think it’s right to put it on one guy. Don’t forget, Reilly was so unreliable that there were games that they put Marner back on defense. Not saying that was a great idea, but how can we just remove this guy from the team without knowing it will bite us in the ass down the road. Like I’ve said before, start by firing Keefe, then see if there is a chance to trade Tavares and/Reilly, then move to Marner. Let’s not forget that Tavares comes off the books next year. That’s 11 million right there.

    Only three options. Yes. The only one that is interesting is if he waives. Ok, if he re-signed for 12.5 x 8 it would be wildly entertaining, it would be raining Leafs fans in TO for days, but there isn't much room for discussion of it as an idea. I would re-sign him. Bertuzzi, Domi and Marner were the best playoff line the Leafs have had in decades. We saw Domi and Marner had great chemistry before in the regular season and Keefe opted to ignore it. Much the same way he ignored the chemistry between O'Reilly and Marner the year before. The Leafs need to hire a coach that will start making lines to win in the playoffs, not to keep guys "happy."
    You guys seem to think the team has Marner over a barrel and they don't. He didn't have any problems in his contract year in 18-19 and when it was time to negotiate he had the Leafs over a barrel. I'm not sure why you don't think he could do something he already did. Marner could wait till April Fools Day and then have Ferris ask Treliving and the Leafs, "Is Marner going into the playoffs as a part of this team or is he going in with his number one priority being not getting hurt so he can get a good deal next year? We need a written commitment." That would be, the Leafs over a barrel again, Marner could be looking at a carbon copy of Matthews contract.
    I think the best starting point would be, where would Marner be willing to waive to? He isn't going to blanket waive his NMC, so where is a realistic destination. The next would be, do they have something that Treliving would want. If I were Marner I would only waive for a team that is still playing, less the Canucks and add the Golden Knights. Who could those teams send back that Treliving would want on his blue line? That is the best case scenario for the Leafs. It could easily be Hall all over again. Marner could say, Carolina or nowhere. Florida or nowhere. Tkachuk had a great relationship with Treliving and wanted to help him as much as he could. That won't be the situation if they are running Marner out of town.
    Chcago, Pittsburg, Anaheim... LOL would you go to any of those places if you were Marner? Kings... Don't bring up PLD. Who do you think the Kings are going to expect you to take? Florida... Well, at least it is a team he would waive for. Vegas for Stone. Stone knew who he was dealing with, he has a full NMC. Maybe Pietrangelo would waive. He has a cup, he might want to playout his twilight years in Toronto. He is the kind of Dman Treliving likes. Does he age like Chara, or like everyone else? I wouldn't take that chance.

      I think dallas is a good mark people drastically underestimate his value if he does decide to waive it would be for a legit stanley cup winning team. Reason being for Dallas if they loose which I think they will as good as they are colarodo offense is to fast and good dallas has actually been close conference final stanley cup final a couple years ago there a really deep team but they don't have a number one clear cut star. Marner could be that and dallas has plenty to give back maybe a one for one a roope hintz? People might say no way but I find it hilarious they think marners not worth that in a trade yea he had a bad playoffs maybe it doesn't work for him here maybe he needs a deeper team like dallas there's a win win trade with dallas somewhere all there good players will skate threw and around you and are constantly good playoff players will see personally I'd get rid of Taveras and reilly first that'd 18 million in space also brodie and liligren will be gone that's another 7 there's plenty of room right there

      @oldman8952 6 месяцев назад

      @@Nyneteen I think the Leafs would be looking for a defenseman back. I don't know if Dallas would part with their 1C for a winger. But Dallas has a lot of big D, just like Treliving likes, there might be something there. Maybe Harley or Lindell? Maybe less and a prospect. Anyway you are spot on. A Dallas, Leafs trade is a starting point for a real discussion.
      I think Rielly's contract isn't that bad for what he is. He needs a really good stay at home defensive partner. Tavares has aged better than I would have expected, but yea, 11 million is too much for a guy who is a 3C. I think he has one more year. From Marner's standpoint that is where you would get the money for a new Marner contract.

      JTs contract is structured to pay him the bulk of his contract in bonuses on July 1st, leaving only $910,000 to be paid in actual cash.
      A trade with Utah would make a ton of sense. Utah gets a large percentage of the cap taken up to stay above the cap floor while only having to pay him $910,000. Plus they get a face for a new franchise and a possible captain to lead a new franchise and build excitment.
