  • Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by ESPN Hockey analyst and host of the Ray and Dregs podcast Ray Ferraro to discuss the Maple Leafs exit from the playoffs, Joseph Woll’s surprising scratch ahead of Game 7, the next steps for this organization, Mitch Marner’s future with the Maple Leafs, three moves he’d do to improve the Maple Leafs this off-season and more. They also get into the Blue Jays struggle against the Washington Nationals, the return of Alek Manoah to the Blue Jays rotation, the fear of possibly dealing Manoah and Mitch Marner and them succeeding elsewhere and more.

    You may not "win" a trade in terms of value in return for dealing Marner, but trading Marner and clearing $11M in cap space is the win in a trade for the Leafs.

    • @Matthew-xh3rm
      @Matthew-xh3rm 24 дня назад +4

      And I'm sure you'll still get a nice piece or two even if the return package won't meet Marner's value.

      "Leafs won't want 3 first round picks over the next 7 years"
      Is he stupid? What do the Leafs use every trade deadline to bolster the roster? 1st round picks. Assets are assets and freeing up 11M gives you more creativity in future trades/signings.

    Tavares is only 33. Not sure why TO media and fans treat him like he’s about to be 40. That’s giving him a pass imo. Brad Marchand for example is 36 (in a few days). Most of the elite players in the league (Tavares salary comparables) that are 33 and over are still highly productive.
    Crosby, Stamkos, Marchand are among just a few. Could it be possible that boy wonder Dubas, along with many TO fans and media, overvalued him from the start? Especially whether his style of play was what TO needed for playoff runs? It’s not like he had a deep playoff run on his resume when he came to TO.
    Tavares has always been an excellent PPG, soft highly skilled player offensively, lacking defensively, lacking speed, lacks playoff type grit and toughness and maybe assistant captain material, but not much evidence he’s that inspirational, will imposing, tenacious leader that’s needed as a captain for teams that are successful in the playoffs.
    While Matthews is clearly their best player and arguably the best active goal scorer in the world right now, I don’t see him as that type of leader either. May grow into an “A” role as time goes on.
    Marner? Lol. No clue why he has an “A”. Who is he leading? Kid is the last player on that roster that deserves an “A”.
    Nylander? May grow into an “A” type of leader.
    Morgan Reilly. Yes,….Morgan Reilly. He by far the most suited to be captain. The only one who has consistently showed leadership qualities. Took a hometown discount too. Longest tenured. High enough on the depth chart in terms of best overall players on the team to have it not be awkward. He’s their #1 dman and has been for years. TO drafted and developed. Never played for another organization. Not arguing that he’ll be the next Steve Yzerman of captains, but for me, Reilly is the clear #1 player that has come closest to earning the “C”.

      JT has significantly slowed down (maybe the Perry knee to head starting to show) but only 2 of the 7 years hes signed were worth 11M

    • @peterrobertson2580
      @peterrobertson2580 24 дня назад

      I thought your note was right on. He's not an $11M player anymore and might never have been, but he is still productive ... pretty consistently a PPG player, last year put up 65 points. Thats still a lot of points! I don't get why everyone wants to just flush him. My first move would be to try to extend him for 3-4 years at $3-4M per. He and Rielly swap the "C" for the "A". He's respected and is the most media savvy of all the core players. If you trade him, you'll have to cough up assets, eat up to 50% of the salary, and then have to find a way to replace the 65 pts he put up. Extending him would provide $7-8M the season after next in cap to add two good or one elite player to the mix. With all the roster and chemistry issues the leafs have, they're not going to optimize their roster this off season. Its going to take more time and this will add to their discretionary cap when they need it.

    • @JOEL-1980
      @JOEL-1980 22 дня назад +1

      Reilly just choked in the playoffs & you want to give him the C 🤨 Reilly should be traded & here's why he's been here 10 yrs that is 10 yrs of losing he needs a fresh start elsewhere.
      You can't have players on your team that have been losers for 10 seasons consecutively losing breeds others losers.
      Rare now that have nobody who is deserving to wear that C.

    Ray Ferraro is a highly intelligent hockey man he has insights up close bc he is ice level he sees how much effort they show rate up close & him being a former player he played with lots of heart so i take lots of stock into his points of view.
    I agree with Hayes that the team is so defiant that the core 4 will win & they've let that cloud the judgement of the rest of the roster.
    Shanascam & Kyle Dufas 🤓 have ruined the franchise for 10 years now!!
    At what point does Pelley or the board step in oh wait they are too stupid to do anything why... bc the fans/fools continue to fill the arena buy lots of merch etc etc.
    In order for serious change to happen you must hit them where it hurts the most the fans/fools ST🛑P going to games! ST🛑P buying merch!
    The problem is this will never happen hence why the board does Jack 💩 & Shanascam is aloud to keep running it back which = INSANITY 🙄
    If you don't want the snake to keep biting you how do you fix the issue you cut the head off the snake 🐍 which the head is Shanascam & his core 4 stupid plan.
    Until he is FIRED they will keep being in DENIAL about the core 4.
    I've never seen a hockey ops present as clueless as Shanascam.

    5 percent PP. Two 11 million dollar players missed half the series due to injuries. The other two making 11 million played but might as well have been healthy scratches because they provided little offense. It was a wonder the Leafs took Boston to 7. Credit the D, and Woll. So at now 33 he looks like he's 38 the numbers all drop after the first year and the foot speed never his strength has diminished I believe it's a result of the amount of hits he's taken playing for the Leafs.

    There was only two, real major issues that the Leafs encountered.. 1. Our Lack of Team defense was an issue in the first two games vs Bruins.. (that is a coaching issue) he has not been able to get this team to play proper defense the entire time he has been here.. That difference, could have gotten us one or two more games before our back was to the wall.. This is a FACT...... 2, Our Powerplay.. Not adjusting our powerplay to an entirely new zone entry and attack is again ( COACHING )... This team should have raced to the blue line with speed and chased a dump in,,,, then force point shots while crashing the net... They failed to adjust and we missed out on maybe, 15 more goals which would have ended this series... In Everything other area, the Leafs matched or exceeded Bruins play... How do we know this --we went to game Seven OT...

    Instead Tavares is shuttled into this central role & Matthews is his assistant for ever until Tavares is out or steps aside. Toronto is fortunate that Matthews is still only 26 years young!
    So award him the C which should have happened soon after the lottery draft. Shanahan & Leafs management never fully committed to Matthews as a sure investment & franchise player.

      And a team that is used to playing with a solid defensive structure would never let that play happen in OT of a Game 7.

      It was still a great pass off the boards u cud do that twenty times and it doesn’t end up on Pastas skate they had played well defensively till then that first goal can’t go in by Sammy I 95% believe if Woll wasn’t hurt he saves that! Leafs remember aren’t a terrible team if they was they would be losing in 4 not 7 games every playoffs only time they didn’t was Caps and BJs series 😏
