They drive like that because they’re shitty drivers to begin with. I’ve driven Porsches on the track and learned about the physics involved and how to drive on a track. I have a model 3 performance, and it is definitely a struggle to not spontaneously be a total wanker in traffic. It's like you've got a preloaded slingshot at your foot at all times. Everything I do right now is get out of other people's way as quickly as possible so I can just cruise in the right lane and mind my own business.
    The build quality is definitely, notably lower than other cars at the price point. I also have an E90 3 series and the build quality difference is stark. The way the panels are finished around the doors between the two vehicles is particularly noteworthy. While I can cut myself on the hemmed inner metal edge of the rear door of the model 3 if I try, the 3 series has an extra coating that runs along the hem to prevent passengers from getting scraped when grabbing the door, and to make the two panels of the door structure more watertight. The door "clunk" also highlights that build quality difference. Tesla's sounds relatively flimsy but the E90 sounds rock solid after 10 years of ownership. I also have an E39 and those doors don't sound as solid as the E90's. They sound heavier, more substantial, but panels in that car feel looser.
    The model 3 is still my favorite daily driver by a loooooooooong shot, but you can definitely see where the bulk of the build cost went. I'm looking forward to luxury manufacturers continuing to catch up with EV drivetrain tech. The lower build quality is definitely something I notice, but it just doesn't bother me enough to care. When I bought the E90, I NEVER thought that my next car would be an electric car with plastic seats.

    I will say - it’s nice to see some more experienced automakers like Audi tackling EV’s in a more traditional way. The build quality of this alone would draw me to it over any Tesla. I don’t mind the classic Audi styling overall, but those they’re shooting themselves in the foot in terms of interior aging with those dual touchscreens. But they probably figure these things are leased anyway. In terms of EV’s in general, yes, they make a lot of sense as daily drivers given the way 99% of people drive so long as the range is adequate. But as fun enthusiast cars driven to be enjoyed, I’m still not quite convinced. I need more than just instant torque and extremely flat handling to enjoy a driving experience. If one day I HAD to have an electric daily driver and a second fun gas car, though, I’d do it.

    I bought a 22 Tesla Model 3 Performance. It's not that audacious. Very few people know what it is. So far, nobody has talked to me about it. The steering is as quick and as responsive as you can handle. I think you are missing an important point. Tesla has an advantage not knowing how to build a common "car". My Tesla handles like something entirely new, phenomenal! That's because they started completely clean slate and designed an incredible handling and performing machine, "from the ground up". The weight is so low and so evenly balanced front to back, it's a HUGE impact upon cornering characteristics. Changes to steering can be dialed in by the user. Although Tesla isn't perfect it's totally amazing. They got the important stuff incredibly well engineered. The stuff that isn't perfect, I'm taking care of and it's not much at all. It's surprisingly tight and well built. Finally in 2022 they are doing a good job with assembly on top of incredible design engineering. When I want a relaxing commuter ordinary drive, my car does that. When I want crazy performance, it can do that too. The choice is up to the driver.

    I’m offended by the Nissan Maxima/Model 3 drivers! I’ve owned both (1991 Maxima and 2019 Model 3). I use blinkers and drive conservatively in traffic and around others. LOL! There, that’s out of the way. That said, I do love the power delivery of the Audi over the Tesla. I also owned a Model Y and sold it. Didn’t want to have two Teslas and just like you said, my son was driving the Y and he’s 16...no bueno. Sold it to get him a Niro PHEV. Now I’m looking for the replacement for my Model 3 and the Audi is tops on my list. Was going to buy this over the 3 when it originally came out, but range was very low, and there were issues with the charging function, causing possible fires, so Audi stopped selling them in the very beginning. Now that they have that worked out, this is a winner! Now having owned EVs for 2 years, range is not as important as I thought it was. Even going on long trips with my Teslas (600 miles plus) I’m stopping every 1.5 hours at max anyway, which is about every 100 miles, so don’t really need more than 200 miles of range in total. And, from what I’m seeing, the Audi charging speed is better than the TESLA. Tesla has a max speed it’ll charge at, but you rarely get it, and when you do, it’s at that rate for very short times. The Audi can sustain that 150kw charging rate for a much longer time, filling up faster. That was there sales pitch in the beginning and I didn’t buy it. But, now I agree with them. Great review. And, let’s get it straight, EVs are NOT GOOD for the environment...they are just less bad. It’s like comparing cigars and cigarettes...both are terrible, one is less terrible...I like them more for the power delivery smoothness. Don’t care for modern small engines with turbos where there is a lot of lag (yes, even in Porsche 911s and their 6 cylinder turbos unless you get the 911 Turbo or Turbo S for 150k+ - I’ve owned Porsches).

    Love your driving impression reviews! It'd be great to see you review a 2021 model 3 performance or something similar! We all know Tesla has their flaws (what car maker doesn't) but I'd love to see your take on that driving experience as a practical yet powerful family sedan nowadays. I also think people just talk about them so much because it was such a shock that a relatively affordable car comes with that level of performance and efficiency regardless of if their drivers can handle it, and no other car company has utilized tech in this day and age to the utility that they have. Other car companies are now replicating what Tesla has done but with their own expertise and it's bringing about great cars just like this E-Tron and many others. In that sense they're going to become a classic down the road... Not saying Model 3 owners should drive like they own the road because hey, gotta respect the drive :)

    7:02 . An ICE could have that function too. Signal it with your phone to start the car 2 minutes before you drive off. But yes in a garage it could be an issue.
    Also if you get a check engine light every month then you need to buy a batter car. I have a mitsubishi L300/Delica Turbo diesel van with an aftermarket intercooler for more horsepower. Its making about 160HP . Currently it has 300.000 miles. I've replaced the clutch ONLY once at 180.000 miles. It gets aproximatelly 30MPG which is good for such an old car. Also since its a diesel it got plenty of torque down the low. I can overtake at 4th speed without downshifting and when going slow i don't even have to use the clutch. It can slowly crawl at 400RPM without using the gas and clutch pedal. If i want to pull i just hit the gas. It got some serious torque down the low. I am talking 500RPM at 2nd gear pulling on a hill (off roading not on road). Of course you got the oil and filter changes which gives the electrics an advantage. But still, is changing a filter at your home that big of a task?
    What i think is that car manufacturers don't make gas cars reliable on purpose(filters and oils aside). And i think thats how it will go for electric cars too. A gear from the instant torque will break, a sensor will fail, the inverter will burn etc.
    I think if we develop diesel engines even more and use biodiesel which reduces the carbon dioxide by A LOT, they will be a good replacement for gas engines from all prespectives. Gas engines are better at making high end power though

    VAG have a loyal customer base, so when they produce an EV, it may not have the longest range, but the tolerance of the Taycan or E Tron battery is something like 10%. A Tesla is 1/2%, meaning the Porsche and Audi aren’t being stressed out constantly when charging or discharging. It’s the same engineering principle as to why elevators are rated at carrying 8 people but they are actually engineered to carry 14. They are aiming for long term reliability with the battery packs as opposed to range, it probably explains why the Audi does much better in cold conditions than Tesla’s. Audi need this car to work for millions of people where as people buy Tesla’s knowing they are a niche, beta technology with shortcomings, with little to no reliability reputation to uphold.

    Serious question Tedward. You used to talk about the need for lobbying to protect car enthusiasts. Are you thinking of doing more on this front?

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  4 года назад +3

      I don't know that I've spoken about lobbying but I think automakers are doing a good job of selling to their market. For example SUV's are now more common than Sedans because that's what people buy. As long as people still purchase sports cars with fun powertrains I think they'll produce them. I agree that I don't want to see governments outlaw Internal Combustion Engines. I would hope they find better ways to control carbon emissions rather than put it all on the auto industry.

      @@TedwardDrives Yeah I agree, I think for 95% of purposes EVs are great. Most Western countries will follow the model of banning new IC cars completely between 2030-2040, depending on where. UK and Europe will come first, then North America. I think it's an issue that we car enthusiasts need to pay attention to and make our voice heard, when governments come to outlawing production of a small percentage of gas cars that would have a tiny impact on emissions. I think even allowing hybrids to continue are important (and also for people who don't live in houses and have easy access to charging)

It will be made entirely without any Lithium or Cobalt but exclusively from recycled diapers or something. If we don't get the technology tomorrow then we should probably focus on diversification of fuels indeed, for example Bentley using biofuels in their GT3 cars deserves more attention than EVs as long as EVs are luxury items and are far from being ready to take over in the future.

    Kilowatt to Kilowatt, an EV is no more efficient than a combustion engine. Aside from oil in changes, the big difference in the running costs is that the government is not taxing electricity at ~25% as they do gas or (sometimes more) diesel fuel. Historically politicians have hesitated taxing they way people heat their homes. When gas tax revenues fade with the rise of EV's -- how long do you think that this will continue? When some claim that EVs are "emissions free", this is false. All that you are doing is transferring your emissions to your local power utility. Unless they are nuke, they are emitting emissions. Wind and solar are not widespread enough to count for much. Still a nice car though.
