Thank you for stating the year your fan production is set in. I was about to nitpick the timeline continuity. For those who are as disoriented as I am the USS Defiant was launched in 2370 & Benjamin Sisko was promoted from Commander to Captain in late 2071. The Ensign's uniform and the Galaxy-class starship were still being used in this 2371, the year the USS Voyager was lost in the Bad Lands & When Generations was set in. Gray movie uniform design came out in 2373.
Yep! The last shot of my episode is the first shot of the USS Defiant from its first appearance in "The Search" so its the week that DS9 S3 E1 takes place! :D I am very careful with my timeline connections, especially that I'm having Keely be an active member of the DS9 station/Defiant Crew specifically...so it all needs to fit! Yes, her Galaxy class were of the ones to already get the new uniforms :D

Great job! I loved the story, the acting was well done, and as far as the effects and CGI went, I couldn't tell you were almost all greenscreen. Unless, of course, you are holding out on all of us and have a Defiant and Galaxy class set hidden somewhere ;)

Very nice short. Like other have mentioned the line delivery was executed very well. A critique would be to add more camera angles. I know how the writing process works and it's great that you have thought things through so thoroughly. I still feel like, for the novice viewer, it would be a good idea to establish certain facts, even minor ones, in dialogue or even voice-over. Since this short does come from Keely's perspective, she could have explained her exact role in her log entry that we heard -- though I am pleased to know there will be an explanation eventually! I also love to imagine all my stories taking place in the Prime universe, but Picard kinda forced me to consider it an alternate because of the direction they took certain characters. And hey, it's your story. Tell it the way you want to and ignore nitpicky questions from viewers if it pleases you. ;)
@@SGUDistantHope Storywise, I like how it went from a fairly generic action sequence into a very specific part of the lore, setting up the potential for a new perspective on previously established events. The greenscreening and CGI backgrounds really were excellent, especially with the addition of background characters and overlapping door jams to help sell the concept. The only thing that still brings me out of the moment is the extended conversations she keeps having with herself! 😁
@@SGUDistantHope Not too shabby. Definitely some of the best green screen compositing around. Hopefully, these productions can get back to having more than one person in the same shot fairly soon.
@@CaptRobertApril Thank you! This was the first film "properly" using my new cameras! "A Long Way From Home" was the test...i've improved since. Yes indeed, there are many films that way...although i've had to work with being "clever" over large casts...because when I try and do larger cast work there are problems and delays and I DONT want there to be massive delays. Convergence is already massively late to film the rest because of the full cast and Covid stopping us coming together. I aimed for "clever" short films for the majority of the Trek shorts series, although plenty with multi cast on the same day (Even if it raised the budget for the shoots by quite a lot haha).
@@SGUDistantHope the CGI Was spot on in the firefight, what stands out alot to me and with it been a fan film was the backgrounds, they was realistic and spot on too high qualilty that you dont ecpect from a fan film, Keep up the good work, iv now subcribed and vueed your other videos and i am hooked.
This was quite good. Part of me wishes you'd made the Challenger's captain a Vulcan, as described in the novel The Return, which also took place in 2371... your captain is a good character though.
This was pretty awesome. In terms of the effects my only little nitpick is the Next Gen transporter effects are slightly off. But pretty good all round.
@@SGUDistantHope Its more down to earth. Not much technobabble being thrown around, you instantly know everything shes saying in relation to The Defiant. The fact its just an average jo story of an ensign getting what in Starfleet would be "her big break" is wholesome.
In Voyager yes. There was also a movie and episode called First Contact :D Were a fan film and not a official production. What did you think of our episode?
That was a really good short, great animation, decent acting and the effects were brilliant. The only thing missing for me was some sound effects of the ships moving in space etc. Otherwise it was awesome.
@@trubludave1657 have you ever watched Star Trek before? The ships make sounds, in the real world, you're absolutely correct but for Star Trek, you wanna here the buzz of warp, the phasers firing and the hum of the impulse engines.
This was very nice. The only suggestion I’d make is that there should have been a few more people on the Defiant bridge, because when I saw she was the only one there, I knew right off that it was a holodeck scenario. A few more crew would have sold the illusion of a real situation. Also… why is turbolift number 36 on the bridge, lol.
This is my favorite one so far. Kinda cheesey that there wouldn't be any other holographic crew in the training program though. But I can understand why. I feel bad for her meeting Sisko with half her uniform collar under her shoulder strap though, lol. Just a little goof, but if she beams down like that and he's standing right there, she's probably getting a stern talking to. I really loved it overall though. It was great to see the Galaxy class again. And an Andorian captain! Nice! I was kinda hoping there'd be a mention of LaForge as Captain since it's the Challenger, but I guess that hasn't happened yet. (That was his ship in Voy's Timeless right?)
That's very nice to hear! Thank you! Ha! She is the kind of women who just wants to try and learn herself as the pilot. I saw it as, she had 2 days to travel back to Earth and she would stay up until 6am trying to learn all about the Defiant...but its not enough as she still fails in the simulation. The Simulation is also exclusively based on Starfleet's single interaction with the Dominion bug ships in DS9 S2E26 "The Adversary" hence the collision at the end. Ha! Indeed! She just thought she was going to beam onboard and bet met by another ensign...she had no clue Sisco would want to welcome her and give her the tour. Sisco's is really proud of this ship when he first launches her so...he loves to give the tour! I'm sure he wouldn't mind the uniform! Just have to set the bag down and straighten it all up! :D La Forge is still on the Enterprise E for at least another 8 years (Nemesis) Currently in fact La Forge is on the Ent D and it will be dealing with the Nexus any month now! But yes that is the same Challenger! :D
@@SGUDistantHope I just realized how much almost everyone nopes out on the E, lol. Geordie goes back to the Galaxy class. Riker and Troi go to the Titan. Barclay ends up at that Pathfinder program. Data nopes out of existence, lol. Worf goes to DS9. Makes you wonder if the Sovereign is all that good to actually be on. (I know it was career/life choices. Just goofing!)

Yep! Thats the point of course! This is the first step in her journey, she's over confident and too cocky but she grows a lot in the later films! (Some are already released when she is more experienced)
Good story, well done, obviously with lots of love. My _only_ feedback is, you really need to work on perspectives of your CG sets better, the transporter room itself was very obvious that the perspective was wrong, the bridge was another. Keep up the good work
Thanks! And indeed, lots of work. I actually brought in my green screen plate and worked to match the scale and placement of the character inside the 3D scene. I was able to fully test how it would look and went with the shots I did. I even worked to make sure that her Hight would match the hight of the actress within the set when she was stood. Do you have suggestions on how to improve? Always interested to get better for the next film, theres a lot more green screen to be done lol.

Tell it the way you want to and ignore nitpicky questions from viewers if it pleases you. ;)
Great little story but what a tease! 😁
Can't wait for the next one 🖖
Thank you so much! What did you enjoy about it specifically? Any highlights? :D
Gee, there are a whole lotta people named Samuel Cockings on this production. How do ya tell 'em apart? ;)
Look...sometimes...when you have a clone army...you call in a few favours :D ;)
What did you think of the film? Anything you particularly enjoyed?
Bang up job!
Thanks Bam!! anything you particularly enjoyed?
loved it, enjoyed it :)
Thanks so much! was there any part of it you particularly enjoyed?
@@SGUDistantHope the CGI Was spot on in the firefight, what stands out alot to me and with it been a fan film was the backgrounds, they was realistic and spot on too high qualilty that you dont ecpect from a fan film, Keep up the good work, iv now subcribed and vueed your other videos and i am hooked.
This was quite good. Part of me wishes you'd made the Challenger's captain a Vulcan, as described in the novel The Return, which also took place in 2371... your captain is a good character though.
Pretty well made.
Better the Voyager and TNG in terms of effects. Very high definition. Great job. 👍
Great work!
Thank you Sean!!! Was there anything in particular you enjoyed? :D
@@SGUDistantHope Managing to surprise me with the holodeck fake-out again.
This was pretty awesome. In terms of the effects my only little nitpick is the Next Gen transporter effects are slightly off. But pretty good all round.
Loved this!
Thanks so much!!! Is there anything you liked about it specifically? Things that stood out to you? :D
@@SGUDistantHope Its more down to earth. Not much technobabble being thrown around, you instantly know everything shes saying in relation to The Defiant.
The fact its just an average jo story of an ensign getting what in Starfleet would be "her big break" is wholesome.
wasnt there already an episode called one small step? this is pretty good. im definitely goin to subscribe
In Voyager yes. There was also a movie and episode called First Contact :D
Were a fan film and not a official production.
What did you think of our episode?
That was a really good short, great animation, decent acting and the effects were brilliant.
The only thing missing for me was some sound effects of the ships moving in space etc. Otherwise it was awesome.
Dude ships don’t make any sound in space it’s a vacuum duh!!!
Pretty nice. I'd try to make more of that first person exposition into dialogue, though. :)
La Forge is still on the Enterprise E for at least another 8 years (Nemesis) Currently in fact La Forge is on the Ent D and it will be dealing with the Nexus any month now!
Really cool.
Thanks Vem! anything in particular you enjoyed?
Very professional acting. CGI well done. You made us believe that it was a very real Star Trek episode.
Great
Great work
Thanks so much! Was there anything in particular you enjoyed? :D
@@SGUDistantHope all of it , I find these stories better than the CBS show . You have some wonderful stories & some of the best actors. True to original genn roddenberry star trek ethos, again many thanks
Welp... Im gwtting nothing done today. Im gonna be watching all these shorts.
Yeh..we've made a few! oops! Let us know your favourites!
I think you'll do well, ambition tempered with enough modesty to make a good impression. You have obviously made yourself known, now just take one step at a time, and who knows, you may wear a Captain's pips yourself. Good Luck!
"I've got this!"
She did, in fact, not got this.
Always interested to get better for the next film, theres a lot more green screen to be done lol.
nice!
