Hey I started that way too! A good way to move away from straight copying (which gets a bad rap but you can learn a lot just from copying), start using reference pictures instead. So say you wanna draw a certain character in a certain pose. Look up the pose separately from the face, use two or three pictures to "copy" and combine into one picture. It'll also help you to learn how to change something from a reference picture and eventually you'll need to use them less and less. Hell, a ton of professional artists still use reference :). Good luck!
I personally take reference from quite a few artists intentionally. My style is a both an amalgamation of what I like from them, and me screwing around to see what works

Qirin Ezra I literally doodle faces and animals 24/7 and even though it sounds pretty obvious I have noticed that because of it I have improved a lot so it is now easier to draw what I imagine. Also if you want to draw something from your imagination try doing a very general sketch and keep doing small sketches until you find a composition that appeals to you the most. Does anyone struggle with this? When you are drawing a person, you put on arm up and one down but there is always one arm that looks longer if you picture it up/down. This really annoys me >:(((
Check where your arms are bending to prevents arms getting too long. They bend at the waist, so always make sure the shoulder to elbow ratio is 1:1 with the shoulder to waist
irl, human body isnt simetrical at all, so theres nothing wrong with 1 arm being longer than the other in a drawing, becuz it is the same in real life anatomy :D be free with your art
Maybe there also an art style called "underappreciation" UwU believe in yourself! I have been drawing for 9 years and I still haven't found a proper art style. Just work on it and practice!
With me I get really pissed off with my art as I NEED it to be perfect and when I get fed up with my art style it's not pretty. Like I can't do angles in 1 style.
Honestly, I feel like my "art style" to me is basically drawing naturally, what I feel like everything should look like, in my head. I'm never forcing my art to look a certain way, it's just the way I translate things on to the paper, which I still need to improve on and I hope to almost master someday.
"I began drawing in the anime style. Around a year ago, I decided to change it to a semi-realistic style. It took me a long time to really find my path, and now it's kinda becoming something a little more cartoon-y. I'm starting to realize how much I like cartoonish kind of drawings. So I have a semi-realistic style, I have my cartoon-y style, and I have my really cartoon-y style. I'm still developing my style, but I think I've come a long way in terms of my art style." WOW. This entire thing is literally me and my journey as an artist, down to the range from semi-realistic to very cartoon-y. I never thought I would hear a journey so similar from another artist. I love this video. INSTANT SUB ;)
This honestly helps so much! I've been struggling with finding a style that i really like for awhile now, but I'm excited try the tips you mentioned so, thank you!
Awww I LOVE the sketches that you made. They all look so easy done! Like don´t get me wrong I don´t mean it like there is no work behind it. But it is amazing how different things you can make :)
I actually did each pretty quickly which is why they have some anatomy issues. But thank you! Yeah, it can be so fun coming up with different styles. I think that part is fairly east. The hard part is recreating and being consistent with each new style!
힐 링v like for me I drew in anime and I got tired of it and I started to try to find my art style and then I found it! I mean you gotta think creative! That’s the best way to find it!
you know that awko taco moment when people accuse you of stealing art because all of your art isn’t the same style because you haven’t found yours yet so it’s all over the place
This is honestly just what I needed TT, I've been drawing since I was just a kid but my style has felt like a never ending battle of change. I'm 23 years old and I am still developing my style, but really recently I was getting so frustrated I almost wanted to give up art, which is pretty drastic I know, but sometimes it gets to me how inconsistent I am! Watching this, really, helped me remember that becoming the great artist I want to be is all about practice and dedication! It really is hard work, I just have to remember how worth it it is in the end. Thank you for this amazing video!!
Salty- Chan I hate when that happens! But everybody's entitled to their own opinion. What other (NOT ALL, OTHER!) people don't understand is that we have opinions too.
Salty- Chan pfft who cares if people don't like your style? You draw and create whatever want! It is your creation. Other people don't have a say in what style you choose to have :)
I feel like I “could” draw if I had a reference in front of me of exactly what I am wanting to draw [which is like impossible] but if I had to draw a character on my own using pictures in my head, I would fail and would get the hands wrong, the body looking weird, just the whole thing in general lookin terrible.
If you have Photoshop or something of the like, you could take references and elements from different sources and mash them together so you get a basic idea of what you're going for, then draw that! :)
How about this. Not just copy 1 drawing but mix them together. If you only copy one art, why not making 3arts become one? I know this may call as cheating but we are ptracticing and looki g for your own art styles. 😊
I mixed my art style with the dork diaries style and manga then drew the hands as stubs. I DONT DO FINGERS AND TOES. (But mah new style has toes and fingers so i now do fingers and toes.)
I have been trying to get a style the last 2 years. I found one I like a month ago and have been trying my hardest to keep it. I also have 3 or 4 different styles I like. I’m more into that anime cartoon or that anime realism. To anyone who is trying to find that style. Just to let you know that it is frustrating but you’ll get threw it and end up being amazing with your art. (I was super frustrated with myself during that 2 years) :))
Yeah it's super hard I've decided to make a list of different artstyles on specific body parts to see what I'll focus on devellopping, got a idea on what kind of general eyes I want but the ears are always a mess because I can only do kaiji like ears whenever I try gotta improve somehow, also trying to pin some hair styles too lack those.
My problem is that I look at peoples styles and then I want to copy it but I also don’t cause I’d feel bad and it wouldn’t really be my own uniqu style. So I try to draw in semi realism cause I’m used to it but it ends up looking wierd and more cartoony kinda but I really want it to look more realistic than cartoony :( and btw I love your videos xxx
That does sound like a problem. Mebbe copy their art style til you're confident then start doing your own work meshed with theirs. I'm sure if you do that long enough, your work in their style and your own unique style will coalesce into something more toward what you want.
Hi, my name is Bella. I am in seventh grade and have always been obsessed with drawing, painting, coloring, anything that has to do with art. I've always wanted my own style. Around when I was about eight or nine, I really started enjoying sketching/drawing. I mostly drew 2D dogs. I was head over heels about my drawings. Looking back at my drawings, I realize I never really have had a "style" of any sort. It's been my DREAM and GOAL to be a better artist. I know I'm young and kind of new to all of this, but these videos. They're really giving me a kick-start and I appreciate it so much. Art has built me to who I am today and I couldn't thank you enough for sharing your tips to make everyone else feel and become a better artist. Love, Bella (PS: Don't be afraid of unleashing your true self, sometimes you might go through hardships and discouragements as an artist. Even though another artist might seem more talented to you, it's okay. You just haven't fully unleashed yourself!)
Never done art before, but I'm a bit confused. I've heard some people say that you should just focus on fundamentals and your style will develop naturally. But then there are people that say if you want a certain style practice it. I understand that you need to know fundamentals regardless but my question is this: Is your art style something you get to choose, or something that happens naturally? Can you change your style through brute force/practice? How do you know when a style is "yours" and not just stuff you're imitating? Is it possible to to get to a point where drawing a style totally different than yours feels natural?
Style, for the most part, develops naturally. You can control certain aspects of it or kick start it, but it tends to do its own thing anyway. You can decide which "umbrella" you want your style to fall under (realism, cartoon, anime, etc), but the rest is up to your personal tastes and just YOU as an artist. I think once you're a more experienced artist, you might be able to recognize that your style is different (or not different). I think it's kind of unavoidable for you to have something that makes your art different from everyone else's, just like how everyone has a different personality.
Realisticly, when your starting to draw Anime you should try a bit of more realistic styles first, just to get the basics of anatomy, angles, and etc. Idk just heard this tip somewhere I forgot
I started with the anime like style becuase that's what everyone else was doing-*I hate my art so much now I have almost quit drawing almost as much as possible twice*-
Dude, this helped so much, especially the comment about haveing multiple styles was okay!! Ive been drawing all my life and my style constantly shifts between realism and cartoon? It gets really frustrating at times because i can never decide what i like the most. :/ Its like depending on my mood and the day i can draw either realism or cartoon better than the other, so my consistency is shot. :( But I'm gunna keep practicing, and stop trying to adjust so much and stick with one, work on it till I'm happy, then move on to the next style and try to tie that one down. :) Thanks for the advice! :D
JelArts I've been looking for vids on art styles, and I'm glad you went more in depth of having multiple styles. Ive been asking if having multiple styles are okay. I kind of have four styles- one for anime, one for anthro-furrys, one for cartoons and chibi too
wow, I'm trying to start out as a digital artist with a pad tablet and I'm trying to find my own art style and even though this isn't actually digital art I can honestly say this was one of the most helpful videos I've seen yet so thank you
Yeah it's the same for me, I'm always looking at art I really like but ik that it's way out of my league, so I get very discouraged and just end up giving up sometimes even though I know your not supposed to if you want to get better
i just realized that overusing referrences is what made suck at drawing than developing, that's what blocked me from finding a general idea about what style i really love thank you so much for this vid, i love you so much, and keep going
It's good to start of with the basics, so anatomy, facial structure, perspective, color, shadows etc. You will hear from a lot of people that it's good to draw from life first because it teaches you these basics. Like it was said it this video learn the rules before you break them. That being said it's not mandatory, but it does help a lot.
I'm on the same page as you but I would watch different tutorials (Anatomy, How to Videos, Positioning, Matching Color, How to shade etc.) And then make them into a person, keep on drawing that (try different styles) and then eventually find a style you are comfortable with!
Like look around the room and maybe draw a still life and practice shadows or ask a friend to stay still for a sec and study their facial features that’s really helped me 😊
Thank you very much. I stopped drawing because I couldn’t do much but because of you I think it’s time to pick up a pencil and some paper again. God bless.
Personally, I really really live Drawing WiFi waffles aka Rin’s drawing style, and I tried incorporating a few details of her style into my own and saw I loved my art so much more :)
I haven't got an art style yet, but I have been trying to draw in other art styles like Steven Universe and enjoying that. I do plan on messing around with potential art styles though.
I suck at art and I know that, but I realllyyyy try to find videos that help me find my art style. But nothing helps. My cousin even says “Your drawing is better then your singing” and honestly it made me feel insecure. And now I really wanna draw but I just can’t, people say “No your not, your super good and drawing” and I know their just saying that to be nice. But you made me feel better about it. And really helped, and thank you. Because no one helps and if they do try then they make me feel very insecure about my drawing. But this really helped me open up and adjust, and honestly thank you.
Thank you for helping! I only had two art styles which was cartoon, and anime. I now found myself a new art style! It’s in between anime and cartoon :) thank u so much :D now I have 3 art styles X3
HOLY COW ..... you are the MOST inspiraional person ive EVER heard thank you ...youve like made me feel really confiendent about how I draw so THANK YOU ....
You know what annoys me? If I draw in the anime style, my teacher says it's anime. If I draw in a cartoon style, it's anime. If I draw a line, it's a n i m e.
This is so relieving. Like I was so worried about having a million styles it’s been like this for years and I’m only now really caring about it. So now I have hope that I can find my style
My problem is, I hate drawing humans! Our anatomy is so complex when you break it down! Not to mention drawing hands and faces are the hardest part for me. I will keep trying but I'm going to put more focus on animals, furry characters and cartoon characters. Seriously, f#%k the human face! It is so hard!
she's talking about cartooning, you can make it as weord as you want. usually cartooning is just broken down to how you see shapes, unless you're doing all realism, you don't need to fully rely on anatomy. you obviously have to at least a little in every style, but you can also draw animals. I make art of humans, my sister makes art of animals. we're both artist, so we pick up eachothers working style, but still. also, practice makes perfect! keep working!
OKAY so, I am the class artist UwU and people love it when I express my feelings through drawings. I love expressing my feelings through drawings. BUT I’ve been so busy with studies and homework, it feels like all my teachers are up on a ladder dropping heavy books over me. And I lost MEH STYLE I’VE BEEN AWAY FROM MY DRAWINGS FOR SO LONG!! And I wanted to start new that includes brakes and I’ve always wanted to make a animation and post it. BUT AGAIN HOMEWORK, STUDIES AND AFTER SPORTS ACTIVITIES ARE WAYING ME DOWN. It’s 3am and I’m spamming
This is very helpful! I remember back in the day when I used to make realistic things, then cartoon, then anime. Now, the style is a mix of it, and I love it. Thanks for helping.
I'm a really young artist (I'm 11) and I still don't have my style. I really want to find my style as soon as possible. I like my drawing simple yet cute. I can draw semi-realistic and cartoony. This really helped. Thank you for helping me to improve my skill!
For the people having a hard time drawing the other eye here’s two tips I find helpful *Draw the eyes at the same time* As an example when you draw one pupil draw the other eyes pupil etc. *don’t* Cover one eye in hair or do a side view
I like this a lot. I've been drawing for a very long time but stopped doing it often over the past few years due to college, but after graduating I'm trying to get back into the hang of things and start drawing my own characters again and actual find a style that works for me that I enjoy.
1:06 Variety is great! I love doodling charas and make em look semi-realistic, cartoony then super toony~ I’ll edit till the end with more thoughts Edit: this is great! I guess im still trying to find my style yet im fine with what is now. Sometimes i draw a character on paper multiple times and they look different each time xD. Then i take what i like about each one and doodle again. Now youve earned a sub~
Thankyou so much for this video. About a year ago, I didn’t have an art style. I really needed one, and didn’t know how to find it. I watched this video and many others, and one of them said that it can take a year to find it. Younger me was disappointed, for I would have to wait a year to find my style. I decided to just accept that fact, and try hard. Over the year, my style slowly developed without realising it, and a year later, or a couple of months ago, I realised I developed a style of my own! Thankyou so much.
Everyone is always talking about the anime "phase" but I've been in the "phase" since I started drawing. So I guess it's just my style. But to be honest, I dabble in other things such as landscapes, several takes on cartoonism, illustration, surrealism etc. Basically I think I'm a jack of most trades, but I'm only intermediate at them haha I'm the best at anime and cartoonism though
I just want a unique style where people can look at my art and go "oh yeah that's (insert name)" but I also want to draw like Kasey Golden because her style is just so cool.
This video made me remember that I should be drawing for myself, not others. I got so caught up in trying to make my art style look nice for other people, it started to get hard for me to draw since I was just so constantly upset with my new art style. I realized that drawing in my own old style makes me happy, and it also looks good!
Kay Draws And Games you don’t have to have a certain style if you work for big studios for example because they will want you to draw in their style anyway 😊☺️

Definitely something I'd be good at

Them: oh, you stole my art!! How could you?! 😤
Still them: *draws realism*
Sushi_Lemon yes, my cousin does that every time and my arts styles completely different smh
When they say that, say: “What style?”
Honestly, I feel like my "art style" to me is basically drawing naturally, what I feel like everything should look like, in my head. I'm never forcing my art to look a certain way, it's just the way I translate things on to the paper, which I still need to improve on and I hope to almost master someday.

What’s your style if you don’t mind me asking?:)
I'm still developing my style, but I think I've come a long way in terms of my art style."
WOW.

Yeah I can imagine that. I still don´t really know if I have a real own style :D I just draw in different ones.

What if you want a style that you like but everyone else doesn't like.
Screw the haters!
Salty- Chan you should draw what you want. Don't force yourself to draw something that you don't like
Salty- Chan I hate when that happens! But everybody's entitled to their own opinion. What other (NOT ALL, OTHER!) people don't understand is that we have opinions too.
Draw what you want! Don't let others hold you back :)
Salty- Chan pfft who cares if people don't like your style? You draw and create whatever want! It is your creation. Other people don't have a say in what style you choose to have :)
I tried one of the eyes and change it up a bit and I’m in HEAVEN!
I feel like I “could” draw if I had a reference in front of me of exactly what I am wanting to draw [which is like impossible] but if I had to draw a character on my own using pictures in my head, I would fail and would get the hands wrong, the body looking weird, just the whole thing in general lookin terrible.
Try using this app called magic poser, it helped a lot when I was trying to learn anatomy. And you can use it to make what ever pose you want
try lookimg at a doll or action figure and try and find the main joints and points :)
@@itzapanda Yea, I have this wooden small stick figure for drawing and I can move it around to get poses
If you have Photoshop or something of the like, you could take references and elements from different sources and mash them together so you get a basic idea of what you're going for, then draw that! :)
This is really funny because I am doing the art style challenge today. Are our brains synced together? XD

(I was super frustrated with myself during that 2 years)

Make a bybrid of your favorite aretists styles!
Love,
Bella
(PS: Don't be afraid of unleashing your true self, sometimes you might go through hardships and discouragements as an artist. Even though another artist might seem more talented to you, it's okay. You just haven't fully unleashed yourself!)
I am so glad that these videos help you! Good luck with your art journey
JelArts such a great insightful answer!!! So good!
Every time I watch a new RUclipsr they say they started with Anime and then there’s just me drawing stickmen
Sorry can't relate,I went through a very long anime phase and that was VERY helpful, you should honestly try because it helps you develop anatomy
Realisticly, when your starting to draw Anime you should try a bit of more realistic styles first, just to get the basics of anatomy, angles, and etc.
Idk just heard this tip somewhere I forgot
I never knew what anime was so i didnt start with that
I started with the anime like style becuase that's what everyone else was doing-*I hate my art so much now I have almost quit drawing almost as much as possible twice*-
@@kaneoM I'm gling to learn angles? WOW
Dude, this helped so much, especially the comment about haveing multiple styles was okay!! Ive been drawing all my life and my style constantly shifts between realism and cartoon? It gets really frustrating at times because i can never decide what i like the most. :/
Its like depending on my mood and the day i can draw either realism or cartoon better than the other, so my consistency is shot. :(
But I'm gunna keep practicing, and stop trying to adjust so much and stick with one, work on it till I'm happy, then move on to the next style and try to tie that one down. :)
Thanks for the advice! :D
I feel like I'm in the same boat! I'm really glad it helped you :)
MusicallyGeared literally the same here, cartoon and realism
JelArts I've been looking for vids on art styles, and I'm glad you went more in depth of having multiple styles. Ive been asking if having multiple styles are okay. I kind of have four styles- one for anime, one for anthro-furrys, one for cartoons and chibi too

Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton losers, you clearly don’t know the complexity of the stick man.
i just realized that overusing referrences is what made suck at drawing than developing,
that's what blocked me from finding a general idea about what style i really love
thank you so much for this vid, i love you so much, and keep going
Should I get better at anatomy before I expiriment with a style?
It's good to start of with the basics, so anatomy, facial structure, perspective, color, shadows etc. You will hear from a lot of people that it's good to draw from life first because it teaches you these basics. Like it was said it this video learn the rules before you break them. That being said it's not mandatory, but it does help a lot.
It is fine to do any but if you learn anatomy first you would not change a lot I think.
I'm on the same page as you but I would watch different tutorials (Anatomy, How to Videos, Positioning, Matching Color, How to shade etc.)
And then make them into a person, keep on drawing that (try different styles) and then eventually find a style you are comfortable with!
Like look around the room and maybe draw a still life and practice shadows or ask a friend to stay still for a sec and study their facial features that’s really helped me 😊
No I had a anime style.
And couldn't draw anatomy to save my life. My avatars took 2 seconds but now it is anime/realistic
Thank you very much. I stopped drawing because I couldn’t do much but because of you I think it’s time to pick up a pencil and some paper again. God bless.
Could peoples styles have no face?

I suck at art and I know that, but I realllyyyy try to find videos that help me find my art style. But nothing helps. My cousin even says “Your drawing is better then your singing” and honestly it made me feel insecure. And now I really wanna draw but I just can’t, people say “No your not, your super good and drawing” and I know their just saying that to be nice. But you made me feel better about it. And really helped, and thank you. Because no one helps and if they do try then they make me feel very insecure about my drawing. But this really helped me open up and adjust, and honestly thank you.

I can only draw cats, I’ve spent my time working of the anatomy and how I want my style of cats to look like😂😂♥️
This is so relieving.
Sqwivig I would maybe suggest just making it simpler? If you aren't going for a realistic style then it doesn't really matter.
she's talking about cartooning, you can make it as weord as you want. usually cartooning is just broken down to how you see shapes, unless you're doing all realism, you don't need to fully rely on anatomy. you obviously have to at least a little in every style, but you can also draw animals. I make art of humans, my sister makes art of animals. we're both artist, so we pick up eachothers working style, but still.
also, practice makes perfect! keep working!
Sqwivig you are right it is so hard to do and so complex
You need to draw humans better¡Dunno why, but I think we are pretty easy to draw, and that will help you a lot when drawing other things.
Why is it easy for me to draw hands????

Thankyou so much for this video. About a year ago, I didn’t have an art style. I really needed one, and didn’t know how to find it. I watched this video and many others, and one of them said that it can take a year to find it. Younger me was disappointed, for I would have to wait a year to find my style. I decided to just accept that fact, and try hard. Over the year, my style slowly developed without realising it, and a year later, or a couple of months ago, I realised I developed a style of my own! Thankyou so much.
Proceeds to draw completely different style in every art and just be like : *I'm improving 😳👏*
I've been drawing for 10 years and I still don't have a art style cause the arts styles are not good or the best for me so I change art styles alot
