Also, I was thinking about what I want to do with these prints...if you order something from my art shop ( leannedelux.etsy.com ) I will include one in your order, from now until July 31, 2023! (Also...yes, I need to update my art shop...😂)
We agree, chasing after a signature style can really get in the way of skill-building, experiencing the materials, and creating authentic content. Style is really more the product of the audience and how other people define what we create as artists. Hope nobody minds when we say "we" because most of us on the Blick team are artists and art educators!
Yes!! I am 23, and only recently ''accepted'' that there is no way to force development of style, it happens without you noticing it and you will see it if you look back at your older art. I think many teenagers aim to be like their favourite artists but... you will never be. You shouldn't want to be, cause that stuff is already out there, we don't need a fake version of it, too :) Make something that is uniquely yours, don't pretend to be someone you are not, even in the art you make. People will always prefer art that has character over art that is simply ''a well executed imitation''. Great video as always, thanks!
I've asked several teachers and family members about finding one's art style. The sum of what they told me is that it's like your handwriting. You can adjust it and work on it to make it a certain way that you like, but there's still going to be patterns of a style that's yours. It will just naturally show through. Similarly, they said, if you look back at your art pieces, you'll start to notice patterns and a style come through on its own. The more you practice, the more clear it will become.
YES! That is such a good comparison. And you're right, it's a lot easier to see as you look at older work....thank you so much for watching and for sharing your comment!
For myself, I’ve always had set my ultimate goal in art to recreate an anime/manga art style but found it helpful to explore other styles along the way! When aiming for a particular art style, it gets frustrating when you can’t capture it perfectly. Even after several years drawing, I’ve only now adapted to the style more than ever. I feel that exploring different styles adds to your understanding of art fundamentals like line weight, anatomy, proper stylization, and what not. There’s a unique art style in an anime I want to replicate so I’m currently working to there in baby steps (mostly adding one element at a time to my artworks). I think the video highlights a big issue that beginner artists, and some intermediate artists, face when trying to separate themselves from everyone else. The most important thing to remember really is to just have fun with it :DD
Oh my goodness, yes! I especially love your point about exploration adding to your understanding of the fundamentals...(I still *really* need to work on this myself!!) Thank you so much for sharing your comment!
I 100% agree with what you’ve shared. I actually really enjoy trying out different ways to create and i would hate to limit myself for the sake of appearance. It’s just so magical to create when i don’t try to control it because then i leave room to be surprised by what i come up with!
I just came across this video and decided to watch it. I am an artist. I was a crafter making many different types of crafts throughout my life. I’m going to be 60 and three years ago I decided to try drawing and painting and it led to the different forms of mediums. I recently got in touch with my high school art teacher who has been critiquing my work. I am appreciating her input. But I am still struggling to find my art style. I think it kind of stems from my past with doing so many different kinds of creative projects throughout my years. So I’ve decided to stop stressing out so much about finding my art style and just go with the flow and see what comes of it. I just feel if I settle on one type of style I will get bored with it and move on to something else.
I think that is a fantastic way to approach it--thank you so much for sharing this! And that is so wonderful that you have been able to connect with your high school art teacher...! 💖 Thank you again for just being here.
Great video, Leanne. I really enjoyed watching you make this stamp. I've been working on developing my own style but I'm just so all over the place I'm not sure if I could ever settle.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you liked it! 💕 And I feel you on that....I can't see myself settling on any one type of style either! Thank you so much for watching.
Something I have found helpful when I find an artist that I like is not so much trying to copy their work, per se, but try and see if I can isolate what element(s) of their word draw me in and see if I can incorporate that idea into my own work. And I am so glad to see you do this video. I see constant videos telling me how to define my art style RIGHT NOW, usually ny picking one from a small number of predetermined styles. Hard no! I find over the years that I have been through several styles, and I have developed as an artist and changed as a person. I even se a flux in my work from day to day, sometimes, depending on my mood. And I love the Warhol quote! Perfection! Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much!!! And I love what you said about isolating the elements you like, I think that is such an excellent idea. And same, I feel my style can change on a day-to-day basis! 😆
i saw some beginning artists around me asking about how to find their art style, and at the time i couldn't put all of my thoughts into words... but this video was pretty much exactly what was going through my mind!! i couldn't have put it better myself! also, i've never heard that Andy Warhol quote before, but i will absolutely be telling myself that whenever i need it now ^-^
I love listening to your videos while I work! Your vibe is so chilled and honestly I always find value in what you say! Even if I already know one or two of the things you mention, I feel we as artists need to be reminded of all this stuff constantly! I started HATING working on my art because everything was too serious...but now I feel my enthusiasm for it is starting to return!
Oh my goodness, you are so sweet! And that makes me soooo happy to know you’re getting your enthusiasm back. I feel the same way, even if I know something, it always helps me to hear again a time or two (or twenty!!) 😆 Thank you so very much for your kind comment, I appreciate you so much.
Loooved this video, and it was #RightOnTime for me!! As a self-taught visual mixed medium artist, I never cared to find out what my style as an artist was, lol. All I want and care about is creating while exploring and challenging myself along the way. Definitely not putting myself nor my art in a box, too boring for me 😂. I like what draws my attention and holds my interest regarding art. I don't have a favorite artist, nor do I have/buy books of artists, lol. However, I do have a fair amount of books/videos on art techniques that I prefer to buy. 🖌🎨🤗🖼 #Keepmaking art #HaveFun #IgnoreTheNaysayers
That was very fun to watch. When came out the scooper (no idea what the actual name is), my eyes popped open like dinner plates. I didn’t expect it to transition into three dimensions at all for some reason. This likely shows what a novice I am in artistry. And I am. Only recently starting to make things again, and I like them… but I had to think: what I’ve got going is surely not that unique, but I very much enjoy it. If I investigate the proper way to draw anything as decreed by anyone: will it positively, or negatively affect that core that makes what I’m doing fun? And I don’t know. So I’m going to keep going a while in pure ignorance.
Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment!! And it's kind of funny, because lately, I've been thinking a lot about enjoyment of art vs. worrying about "getting better at it." I'm so glad that you are getting back to making things, and that you are enjoying it! And I totally get your concern about how learning more might affect the way you view your art. I think you've got a great attitude right now....learning can be great, as long as you keep that spark!!! I really think when it comes to art, you should do what feels best to you.
@ I appreciate that ^_^ I think I might be a slightly silly to stay completely ignorant. As long as it enthuses me to continue, and does not subsume my own authorial/artorial voice: it surely should not hurt me to enjoy a ‘taste’ of others’ amazing crafts. I must keep it in mind: there is great difference in sipping the sparkling waters of artistry, and in drowning myself in those wondrous waters. Ado inspired me completely to return to writing - a Songstress. As such: Inspiration and Enthusiasm are available to me from many persons, and if I should feel immersed in my artistic pursuits all the more as a result of having witnessed the joys of the extraordinary and effortful… then as with Ado: I should not be afraid to share what I have so delighted in, even if it should quite frighten me to display my imperfections - is not all art only complete when the artist says ‘this is good enough’ or ‘I cannot do better here’? I cannot know what a proper artist, with a proper education and a long-drawn-from practice might say… for my few scratches cannot measure up before such mastery as I have seen in the works of others. And yet, I do so endeavour for completion, if only along the lines of: ‘do I enjoy it enough to put it in my books, and share it with the world?’ As long as I can say ‘yes’ to that question, I will for now have my answer. A very good friend of mine, and the very best Artist I have ever known, I approached for an opinion; for I wondered if I was performing Sins upon artistry that which I might never have lived down. Though I was embarrassed to present my little chicken scratchings to one who can draw worlds out of nothing: She said it wasn’t bad. … And also that anyone who is so bothered by my drawings that they refuse to read my books because of them: is just set on being miserable! I enjoyed the passion with which that thought was expressed very much! So, I will continue to move forward in a way which I am so enjoying, and it is my hope that I shall ‘improve’ with time (as measured by my becoming better at creating the things I wish to create). But I will also subscribe to your channel, because I think it is worth witnessing amazing artistry, and hearing from voices that are genuine and passionate. :) Thank you for all that you do.
@@TalesofTheEndTimes "anyone who is so bothered by my drawings that they refuse to read my books because of them: is just set on being miserable!"....YES! I love that too!!! Thank you so very kindly....I appreciate you being here so much!!
From my experience I didn’t really worry about a art style when I was younger I just drew whatever I felt like and still do draw whatever I feel like but I know what art style I always try to go for witch is realism sure I’m not that good at it but I know I’ll get better as times go on my most realistic pieces of art are my eyes ball if I draw them big but I’m not good at making them small on a human face
Yes! You will absolutely get better. It seriously makes me so happy that you have such a healthy outlook on your art practice!! Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. 💖
I'm trying to find an art style to illustrate a children's book I wrote. Someone in the comments said something about handwriting being like an art style. Even through years of drawing freely, my art looks childish. I've tried looking at kids books for inspiration, but I end up getting frustrated instead 😅
I totally get that--especially if you are wanting to do something like illustrate a book, it makes sense to want to nail down a style! Keep working and I think you will discover your way!!
I’ve been all over the place with learning and trying new things since a little girl. Now I’m nearly 40 and wanting to be a professional artist… there is a time for experimentation and for some there will be a time for a definite style so I agree and disagree
For sure!!! I agree, there's definitely a time (like you said, when you think about becoming a pro) when you may want to focus in on what your style is.
If you love creating, it really doesn't matter what style it is. Just make stuff and enjoy the process and be proud of the result. If you want to get better at a specific thing, rinse & repeat. This is great advice except perhaps if the artist is concerned with making money. Then the words "Art Style" usually equate to a marketable brand. Because an artist's work has to be instantly recognizable as that artist's work in the marketplace. That is the way the system has commoditised artists.Though really, art should be about transformation rather than transaction.
I think we get brain washed by the "pro" artists into spending money on courses, I've done it. Now I focus on building my skill level in the areas I enjoy most and create what ever I feel like.
