How to develop your art style

- Hey there! I sometimes get questions about how I developed my art style, so I thought I'd make a little vid breaking down the process I used (in a draw with me format). Feel free to entirely disregard these suggestions or tweak as you see fit! This is intended as more of a guide on how to re-examine and perhaps grow our body of work. Additionally, it includes a few thoughts on why I think art style is ultimately unimportant and a terrible Uncle Iroh impression.

Such reassuring and forgiving advice, and such a good resource for anyone doubting their creative journey. Love the Art + Fear shoutout!
Christina!! So relieved to hear that, thank you!! Also yes, I couldn't resist (esp when I was reading it when I was in the midst of writing this), so many encouraging nuggets in that book :~)
I love the vibrancy in those coloured pencils and the movements which flow through the design....so beautiful 🦋
Thank you!! Nothing like going full saturation ;-)
Love the vibrant colours, reminds me of a painting by van gogh
Beautiful and therapeutic❤
Thank you so much!
It’s enough to just hear your voice, but your art is so thoughtful, expressive and profound! Your perspective reflects this, as well. I am very uncomfortable when people ask me what my style is. I am not very experienced and I never think of doing anything in a particular style. But maybe that’s the difference between the pros and amateurs like myself.
this was a delight to watch. I feel inspired. I want to expand what I draw and find my style a bit more as I tend to follow closely to my inspirations and influences and not draw my own thinking and ideas. time to experiment!! thank you for your video:)
I'm so glad!! Have so much fun in your experimenting!! ❤️
Sure the advice is excellent and I needed to hear it right now but also *this moth*! 🔥
Hahaha thanks so much

Thank you so much :'')
Thank you for the beautiful video! Love your voice and the painting!!!!
Aw, thanks so much!!
Love this video, Kim. One to watch time and time again. I love the idea of taking inspiration from all your senses to inform your art style. Some similar themes to Steal Like an Artist from Austin Kleon. Great video!
Thanks so much!! I still have yet to read that one!
Thank you.
It was my pleasure! :)
Great video once again :)
Thank you so much!! 💕
Great work ❤ your artwork is so unique!! What's the story/idea behind it?
Thanks so much, I’m glad you asked! For this one I suppose it fits in with the theme of the video. There’s a quote that I read on a mural in Atlanta, “some flowers bloom at night when everyone is asleep”. I took this to mean that a lot of growth and transformation goes unseen and can be nurtured in quiet and hidden spaces. For me, the moth is another way of symbolizing transformation and night, and like a moth’s attraction to light, the flames represent artistic obsession ;-)
@@kesalt woahhhh!!! Epic
Great video❤ love colours😊what type of pencils do you use?
thanks so much! Prismacolor :-)
I found my art style and it’s expressionism it’s a movement, and art style it’s been around for years. I disagree with you because there’s much more to art when you have an art style. For example, expressionism is a style that conveys emotion and the ability to express yourself through art. Honestly the reason why I resonate with this style because this is what real art should be and the same with music and that’s how I feel about art and music. Art style is important not the opposite of it because there’s a story and meaning behind your art than just painting straight on a canvas or paper. It needs to have meaning or emotion in it and have a story behind it.
I agree with you! I think emotion, self expression and storytelling behind art are each invaluable qualities when it comes to art making. Although each of these can inform a style, I think sometimes artists get hung up on “finding a style” rather than exploring said qualities that they value in art. There’s definitely way more to art than this 10 minute video discusses :)
