Think about it this way, they are CONSTSNTLY coming up with musical ideas, literally all the time. They just take 3 weeks to condense all their individual ideas into solidified music.
Mangini knows better. Portnoy is great, but still very overrated. Mike Portnoy's reputation as a drummer is like an average Asian guy, bragging about his "big" dick.
Mike is the drummer that every band wants to have ! i mean first of all he can play everything ,he listends the riffs carefully and he's dont play all the time in rehershall,he knows theory and hes passionate about the writing process and the music part compare with the most drummers dont even care about all this things!
It only took them three weeks? THREE WEEK?! This album has some amazing tracks on it. Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Consciousness are some of my all time favorite DT songs and they did it in three weeks. Amazing.
I just love the process of them making music. JP figuring out the beginning to Honor Thy Father and MP figuring out how to play the drums to the riff. Just amazing for the type of music they make.
Not a big mistery.. From ADToE until now it's OBVIOUS that Mike not being in the band is the main reason why the music is different... (Second reason: DT music has always been different from one album to another..)
Their music feels directionless since he left. Like they are still amazing players, but seems like the songs don't really make a statement and don't really tug at the heart strings. The drums also sound sterile imo. It seems like they are following a formula of expections. Some nice songs, some loud songs, include a long epic for formality. Impressive to listen to, but something is missing. Ive recently gone back and started listening to awake and images and words and six degreese. I forgot how damn good they were.
True, but very has been a definite difference since Mike left. Also it feels like each album isn't Progressing like before, this could be just a case of the guys getting on in their musical lives or something Mike brought to the table. I.E every album since Mike left has a similar base "feel" to the music. Where as before each album not only conceptually was different, but the approach was also very new.
Actually a Mark Tremonti Signature Model given to him by MT himself - he and JP got to be friends (I believe a Gear Connection: both using Mesa Boogie? Tremonti also has stated that he practiced to "Rock Discipline" before Creed got big) and both gave each other their Signature Models...and I believe both got used on the other band's recordings.
This video as a kid destroyed me. I, like wtf, how can you go from here n there. They are talented, wish I had ppl around me that would just jam n try.
I have the lost but not forgotten cd with the instrumental demos of Train of Thought. At the end of SoC, you can hear MP yell something like "Yea bois, we are DONE!". Must have been the day after that one they mentionned xD
I must admit I did not think DT would be so diff. without Portnoy. But in only 3 albums they have wandered so far away... I stand corrected, they should have taken the break he needed and come back stronger. At the very least, hindsight being 20/20, they should have gone with Marcus as their new drummer...
Myung : " Ok guys, just make it great for the show. I'll follow you with my ninja's fingers." Lol I love how he play his parts on RBX series, yamaha have mid low sound so warm & mix perfectly to the song. Musicman sounds weird for him, bongo's sound is to thin & crankky. just my two cent, sory for my english 🤭
Although it makes sense, these guys are professionals, they know what they're doing and do this for a living, they don't have other jobs to juggle between their band's rehearsals, it's a full commitment thing.
Yet like in the middle of the video the camera is moving but you can see all five member in front of the camera, but my guess is that it probably was JR's hidden third hand, you can see it too in the making of Systematic Chaos :)
Actually, that was on the tour and not the making of the album hehe, he decided he weill leave after the tour so that he would honor the remaining tour dates, but at some point before the end of the tour the band and new and current manager talk him into staying in the band. And yes i agree with you, he will be impossible to replace.
yeah dude. i heard Mike was so upset at one point during Infinity that he was considering leaving the band. fortunately he didnt. it'd be impossible to replace him
So you're telling me they made the Unison in In the name of god in under 3 weeks. Let alone probably only 1-2 days total. I can't even do the first measure in that unison and I'm not even the one who invented it. Fuck Dream Theater they are too good.
Mike is not only one hell of a drummer but he has such good ideas for arrangement,I miss him for that...
Agreed.. there is an element in the music that's been missing since his departure.
I miss those awesome sunglasses lol. Portnoy is fantastic
Mangini ain't no slouch in the way of that, either. But yeah. I miss Portnoy in DT too.
U guys complaining about dt's sound today just got old and stuck up with the band's early days (and your younger years)
instablaster.
it took them 3 weeks to write my favorite album? shit
Writing fucking Train of Thought in 3 weeks? That blows my mind.
They are god of them way. I really love them when they're with Mr. Portnoy
they write almost everything in 3 weeks
Think about it this way, they are CONSTSNTLY coming up with musical ideas, literally all the time. They just take 3 weeks to condense all their individual ideas into solidified music.
Master of Puppest was written in 8 weeks. When you're inspired, these things happen.
Portnoy 2024 2 Month for drums Part ...so wow Epic 16th album to come !!! I think 7 songs 10 15 min of each , like a mix of Black Clouds and Train Of
and here we see an example of how important portnoy was in the sound/songwriting of DT. petrucci and him where a great team \m/
LTE 3!
Portnoy really knows what a good song is all about.
+Sam De Paepe Yea he does...
Mangini knows better. Portnoy is great, but still very overrated. Mike Portnoy's reputation as a drummer is like an average Asian guy, bragging about his "big" dick.
+Sam De Paepe he is a Master Class ..That's normal
@@gavinmcclinsey8168 Portnoy musician ..Mangini only.
Drummer
U understand idiot?
@@wildan29ijudin94 I support you man. There's so true.
Mike's influence in DT is and always will be irreplaceable in all ways...
Mike is the drummer that every band wants to have ! i mean first of all he can play everything ,he listends the riffs carefully and he's dont play all the time in rehershall,he knows theory and hes passionate about the writing process and the music part compare with the most drummers dont even care about all this things!
3 weeks... pure geniuses!
It only took them three weeks? THREE WEEK?! This album has some amazing tracks on it. Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Consciousness are some of my all time favorite DT songs and they did it in three weeks. Amazing.
Seeing John Petrucci with a PRS is always mindblowing 😂
Wow, Petrucci plays with a PRS 5:16
yep gift from mark tremonti
Valla ben de şoktayım
Best guitars around :)
Omair Sheikh, lol 😂
Myung is the only one who hasn't changed his looks in the twenty plus years they've been together.
I just love the process of them making music. JP figuring out the beginning to Honor Thy Father and MP figuring out how to play the drums to the riff. Just amazing for the type of music they make.
And now many people wonder why DT is so different..see how much important Mike was for writing? Damn I really do miss that man..
That's so sooooo true... nowadays it's too much of Jordan I think.
Not a big mistery.. From ADToE until now it's OBVIOUS that Mike not being in the band is the main reason why the music is different... (Second reason: DT music has always been different from one album to another..)
Pablo Pallares Well, I don't really think their last 3 studio albums sounded different from those in the past (perhaps the last one).
Their music feels directionless since he left. Like they are still amazing players, but seems like the songs don't really make a statement and don't really tug at the heart strings. The drums also sound sterile imo.
It seems like they are following a formula of expections. Some nice songs, some loud songs, include a long epic for formality. Impressive to listen to, but something is missing.

i wish i lived in one of those departmentes next door...
Heyy ur the guy... I watch ur videos
The tone on this album perfect. I F*&$%ing love this album.
20 years already. cant believe it. thanks for sharing.
Magic happening at 2:26
Metal! boy do i miss they heavy stuff they used to do... :(
Portnoy seemed really like the main pillar of this masterpiece. I hope one day he come back to the band.
well, he back my man
@@Detonated66 he really did bro 😭

Is James the official DT's cameraman? 😁
From what I remember hearing, the PRS was a gift from Mark Tremonti.
I have no idea if that's true, it's just what I have heard. *shrug*
Watching this brings back memories of writing with bandmates in numerous bands. Now I do all this by myself in my home studio lol
Best album they have ever made, so many killer riffs!
THEY WROTE THAT IN THREE WEEKS
"Yeah, yeah! That's the shit!" That's how the fucking write these songs. And I thought it was telepathy.
world's most technical guitarist with world's most technical drummer
True, Mangini far more technical and fast
The third-best album.. Images and words, awake and train.
6:58 Gets me every FRICKING time 😂😂😂
By far their best album.
And all this in over 3 weeks! WOW
Nah Metropolis pt 2, images and words and six degrees are above this one
The worst one with Portnoy
@@dajecm That's between When Dream and Day United, Falling Into Infinity or the first half of Octavarium.
@@mr.lysergic3240 six degrees is a horrible album, only one good song that is overrated
mike the king
I hope they play together again someday
how you feeling now with them reuniting?
Its so cool seeing the pieces of iconic songs come together
This is sad, seeing John and Mike writing, probably something that will never happen again
good news, they did it again
Wrong budddy
New Liquid Tension Experiment album coming, probably next year.
Wrong
The best thing to be wrong about
2:53 I remember that part of song weird they did right on the spot. Its a cool rhythmic displacement
Los amo. Gracias por tanta dedicacion para escuchar tan buena musica. Dream theater mi banda favorita por siempre.
I really miss Portnoy being in his band with his brothers
This video as a kid destroyed me. I, like wtf, how can you go from here n there. They are talented, wish I had ppl around me that would just jam n try.
3:44 - love this interplay just here between MP and JP!
yes, you are right. The young Petrucci was looking good. Now,he is also losing his hair but one thing remains the same that's his talent-Inger,india
Dont cross the crooked step (insert nasty breakdown here)
it will be easier if MP and JP are in your band
I have the lost but not forgotten cd with the instrumental demos of Train of Thought. At the end of SoC, you can hear MP yell something like "Yea bois, we are DONE!". Must have been the day after that one they mentionned xD

I stand corrected, they should have taken the break he needed and come back stronger. At the very least, hindsight being 20/20, they should have gone with Marcus as their new drummer...
They actually chose Marcus, but he didn't want to commit 100% of his time to Dream Theater
You mean Marco right?
7:00 I do not miss THAT in Dream Theater.
hahaha "yea yea, thas the shit!"
amazing how these guys write. i wish i could watch them all the day
It’s funny watching the moment that Petrucci came up with one of my favorite riffs
yea yea yea that's the shit!! :DDDD Go Portnoy!!
one of the best albums...
I just saw Petrucci play a PRS
Mind blown
one of the best drummer and guitaist chemistry
JFC every comment is I MISS PORNTOY... ITS BEEN LIKE 12 YEARS MOVE ON FFS
LET'S GET ROAAAAAAAAAAIIIGHT
INTO THE NEEEEEEWS
Indeed
He's still kickass though, no matter what he wears
Hey kept them in line! So miss that!
Best sound ever they could make....
This album has a special place…
The REAL *DREAM THEATER*
1:55 effortless...literally
No he looks awesome!
Now that symbolizes the connection and chemistry of DT..in 3 weeks..of such epic progressive metal..take that kiddos!
Good news: Dt just announced the return of Mike Portnoy
honor thy father really kicks my head
Dude, I started fucking crying when I heard that for the first time.
6:55 That is comedy gold
6:55 the original name of Stream of Consciousness
LMAO 😂

Probably my favorite DT album...well definitely in my top 3
The Best Album of the Best Band Ever!!!!
yeah yeaah,, that's the shit ! hahaha love mike
Short haired budokan Petrucci was peak 🔥
"yeah yeah yeah! that's the shit!" hahahaha :)) love that line :))
greatest album with BEST sound of DT ever!
Ohhhh honor thy father
I would have thought it took them at least a year to come up with the whole Stream Of Consciousness idea.
Although it makes sense, these guys are professionals, they know what they're doing and do this for a living, they don't have other jobs to juggle between their band's rehearsals, it's a full commitment thing.
Im starting to think John Myung cant talk lol
7:24 they started writing on Mario Day
@edoDT He had tunings all over the place on this album, the LP made it easy to quickly tune to anything without having 8 guitars on standby.
Yet like in the middle of the video the camera is moving but you can see all five member in front of the camera, but my guess is that it probably was JR's hidden third hand, you can see it too in the making of Systematic Chaos :)
3:36 and that's why Ringo is important to any drummer boys and girls.
Actually, that was on the tour and not the making of the album hehe, he decided he weill leave after the tour so that he would honor the remaining tour dates, but at some point before the end of the tour the band and new and current manager talk him into staying in the band.

He's There !! You can see him at 1:47 and also at the end hear him speaking XD
dunno, the six degrees vidoe is gone from here, and the infinity tour you can read that excerpt in the website of their book "Lifting Shadows"
this is how history was being made !!
JAMES IS HOLDING THE CAM
yeah dude. i heard Mike was so upset at one point during Infinity that he was considering leaving the band. fortunately he didnt. it'd be impossible to replace him
