Jaws Unleashed was my childhood! I used to have a PS2 and would play it for hours at a time even until early morning. ManEater came almost 15 yeras later I think and it improved on the combat of JU for sure and the progression of starting as a Pup Shark and growing into a monster sized Shark that fit a car in its mouth felt so refreshing to me.
Did you know the maneater devs actually did implement a mechanic related to the inability sharks have to stay still and not suffocate? It’s actually something I never noticed until I went afk in a grotto trying to lose hunters, I went to the bathroom then came back to my sharks face taking up the entire screen. It was a bit unnerving but I was primarily wondering “how?” So I decided to move my shark away from the grotto wall then planted the camera up against the wall and faced my shark towards the wall and sure enough, the shark moves extremely slowly in the direction see is facing, even when you don’t touch the controller. Man the devs are really something else, they knew dieing because you went afk and didn’t pause is bullshit but still wanted to emulate the ram ventilation in the game because they wanted to go the extra bit, so they decided that maybe displacing the shark when you went afk was more harmless than killing the shark.
I love Maneater I could sing its praises all day long because the game literally hands you a bull shark, points at the ocean and goes “here have fun, be a shark, go nuts” and I freaking love Maneater for it, Then you also have the truth quest DLC in which you can make your shark even more insane
YES I think Jaws Unleashed is my 3rd most played game of all time funnily enough. I really wanna go back and play it again someday. Thank you for covering this!

Puzzle solving in the 3D Eco game made perfect sense, seeing how Dolphins are known for being one of the world's smartest animals after all.
The is the first time in awhile where a game I was totally uninterested in checking out like Man Eater is shown to me in a interesting and funny way. Now I actually wanna go play it especially after seeing how much it is improved on compared to what came in the past, love the vid
I used to be obsessed with Shark and fish games where you eat other creatures since Feeding Frenzy when I was a kid, glad to see this genre isn't dead yet.
What got me to play Maneater were the awesome Apex Predators you have to fight to become the ultimate Apex Predator of Port Clovis. My #1 favorite Apex is the Apex Orca. It's design is truly cool like it's more monstrous Orca whose been in captivity for so long and this is what it looks like after all those years of performing. It's like Free Willy and Shamu as one.

In Jaws Unleashed, I enjoyed stealth grabbing a person, dragging them into the depths, letting them go so they could swim back to the surface, only to grab them and do it again. Ahhhh, imagining the feeling of hope the person had that they had escaped, only to drag them back to the depths.
I suspect I have some issues...
I love the fact that the background bgm is from the Jaws NES game.
Deep water also gets me. I always felt super uneasy swimming in open water even in chill games like DK64. I blame Ecco the Dolphin.

Never thought I would here about a sandbox game taking place underwater. I guess I wouldn't mind playing it, but I absolutely fear big bodies of water where I can't see in front of me
Jaws unleashed the undefeated goat of the era.
Maneater is getting DLC this Summer. It's called Truth Quest.
I will admit I played Jaws Unleashed when I was younger and I had a lot of fun playing it. I remember loving fighting Shamu and seeing the finisher where Jaws ripped it in half. Though I will admit I never got passed certain missions that Oil tower one definitely being one of them. I really need to play Maneater considering it looks like a spiritual successor that fixes a lot of problems that the original did.
Fun Fact the famous Jaws poster of the movie also had a mako shark, so I guess the Jaws games were being faithful to the movie that way.

Maneater is coming to the Nintendo Switch May 25th but Truth DLC will be coming to switch later this year.
Wait, when the shark in Maneater is on land, it shows an O2 symbol depleting, meaning the shark is losing oxygen, but shouldn't it be H20 the shark needs?
Sharks and other fish extract oxygen from water.
Jaws unleashed has it's fun and frustrating times for sure. Maneater turns fun up to 11! I just started playing yesterday exploring is very relaxing and getting constantly killed by alligators was frustrating at first ,but I kept sneaking around and eating catfish and after evolving, now a teen level 9 killing those pesky alligators is easier :)
This is such a fun beach themed video to end summer with, and I also would love to play a shark game with big the cat's beach theme playing as I eat the people and aquatic wildlife! 🦈
I heard the maneater may get DLC, to which I wish they would take the craziness of giant squids, prehistoric creatures, and maybe even aliens. Let the shark game jump the shark!

You might've found out at this point, but the cover in Jaws Unleashed does feature a great white, simply put it's a slightly exaggerated one. It's based on a paperback edition of the book, the cover of which was drawn by Roger Kastel and later used for the original film's poster and some of the sequels' posters. The mouth may resemble a mako's more but it's a great white shark overall.
I do feel like the Jaws Unleashed portion of the review is hindered a bit by not paying attention to health and hunger, not looking at the radar and not keeping track of stuff you do in the missions (like being able to throw stuff which I personally never thought was an issue as a young lad)... nevermind the controls. Definitely should've used a PlayStation 2 controller. It definitely doesn't play as well in other consoles.
I also smell a bit of bias in favor of Maneater purely from having not experienced anything JAWS related beforehand xD
Like, yeah, of course you start out as a tank in Jaws Unleashed... It's JAWS. That's how the sharks work in that series. Though you can still upgrade them without adding weird armor and stuff like that, as Jaws Unleashed is a bit more reserved (the review kinda ignores the fact that you can upgrade all your stats in Unleashed). Naturally the open world map is severed into sections, there are no health bars on top of enemies and other stuff cluttering the screen... it was 2006 and the tech wasn't quite there yet, plus while Unleashed went for the more subtle approach, smartly following the footsteps of the original film, Maneater is more of a comedy, and the bull shark feels more like a dolphin and a bulldog stuffed in the body of a shark rather than the 40 ft great white from Unleashed whose speed and weight all feel real. There's a different between playing as one of the most iconic movie monsters and a rabid bull shark with superpowers.
I also don't get the issue about being unable to see your prey or where attacks came from... The amount of times I've seen people say they played Unleashed as kids and not once have I seen that complaint, I never had issues with that either. Dying in the first couple of levels is rather weird, though I agree that there are a few times where the game could use more instructions and more content, but I'm happy with the trivia you get during loading screens, it works if you're a JAWS fan (It's rare to find someone who hasn't at least seen the first film, I think xD).
Ultimate Predator IS garbage though, unquestionably.

Surprised that literally nobody covering Maneater has mentioned the studios previous game, Depth. 4v2 pvp game with 4 being people gathering treasure and 2 being sharks om nom'in them. It was really good fun and got discarded to make Maneater. Most of the mechanics came from Depth but they did clearly take inspiration from Jaws as well. The ''meatball'' mechanic for example is from ''Eat, Feed, Grow'' another ocean fish thingie.
There is one thing I wish was in man eater that was in jaws unleashed, and that is biting and targeting different body parts like arms and legs.
Actually there is a tutorial on how to throw things in Jaws Unleashed
but it's in a loading screen so your point still stands.
This one was rad, and may finally be the thing that sells me on Maneater.
As far as box art goes, both Jaws games do feature Great Whites. The Unleashed box is based on the original movie poster art, and the shark for that is based on a (not particularly accurate) model of a Great White in a museum, circa the 70's. That's according to one of the documentaries on the bluray releases.
Ultimate Predator, that looks to be a heavily filtered pic of a youngish Great White with a bit of a wide angle lens as well. I can see why you would think Mako, but the teeth are still far too wide and triangular. Mako teeth are *super* narrow, with very little difference between the top and lower teether.
Meanwhile, yeah, it was even pointed out during development that the box art for Maneater was making it look a lot more like a Great White than a Bull with the more pointy nose, and just general design. You can probably just chalk that up to Great Whites being more recognisable and 'classic' shark.
What I can say about Jaws Unleashed is that, overall, the PC version does alleviate some of these issues. It was released later on with a bit more work, which translates to a bit less jank overall, you can rebind your controller assignments, a few camera tweaks and, as a biggie, the increased resolution makes it much easier to make out what specific animals around you are. The original SD Xbox/PS2 graphics aren't doing you any favours in that regard.

I owned Jaws unleashed back in the day. Got about as far as the oil tower mission. I agree that the game blew its load to soon at the SeaWorld level (interesting choice of sound effect btw...) and it stops being fun after that. Always loved the concept and looking at Maneater, it seems like the Jaws game I wanted.

I played this game at 14 and knew right away to use cheats lol. With the Cheats this game is easier and a lot of fun.
