Game Apologist - Sonic the Hedgehog

- Welcome to the extra long, extra amateur pilot episode of the Game Apologist! Every episode we look at a bad or controversial video game and squeeze out as much enjoyment as possible while turning a blind eye to the many horrific downsides.
We kick off with one of the most divisive game series to ever exist: Sonic the Hedgehog. While the blue blur certainly has more than a couple titles worthy of examination on this show, the original Genesis games are still considered gaming masterpieces...right?
With more and more of gaming media turning up their noses at even the best of the series, we have to go back to the very beginning and ask: Was Sonic ever good?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm still brand new at this RUclips thing, so please forgive any shoddy editing/recording/etc. as I get the hang of things. I also just now realize that I did not do a good job of sourcing any of this material, so please drop me a line if you see some work of yours that needs some props or whatever the case is. Almost all of this stuff was from Google image searches.
Please let me know what you think, about this game, the show, or what you'd like to see in the future!

9:35 "Alright, so I'm a bit of a hypocrite. Sonic fan, remember?" Secretly the best joke in the script.
Wait, that was a joke?
@@mikewinans5091 Yes it was .
“When you love something, you don’t turn a blind eye when it struggles. You smack it in the mouth and say ‘Get your SHIT together!’” Is probably the best quote I’ve heard in a long time

The title had me a bit worried, but this is FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIC. Keep at it!

Agreed
This is my favorite long-form rebuttal of "Sonic was never good."
I'm an open minded person. I respect people's opinions for the most part. However anyone trying to convince me Sonic 3 & Knuckles was bad is wrong.
Pssst, 16 bit games or everything before the Xbox or Xbox 360 don't exist doesn't exist to a lot of gamers including these so called "hardcore gamers".
Until Halo came along gaming had barely developed beyond Pac Man and Pong.
To me Sonic was on its best during the 16 bit days and the recent Sonic Mania which reminded me why I enjoyed my Sega 16 bit days so much.
F to all those people who say the first 3 sonic games are bad
@@thesonicfanboi How can you possibly say Sonic 3 is bad. You can even make it BETTER by adding SAK.
@@boonanaman7 There are legit only 5 sonic games I would call objectively bad... and thats out 66 games with the Blue Blur in it.
@@boonanaman7 Bruh the GBA sonics were straight gold including Sonic Battle... it goes:
1: Sonic 06
2. Sonic Boom
3. Sonic 4: Episode 1
4. Sonic 3D Blast
5. Sonic Shuffle
You both perfectly and inoffensively described the Sonic Fanbase. I'm impressed.
Shock Tactic I rewrote this episode probably five times, re recorded it another three. I spent a loooot of time trying to get this right for my first time out. I'm glad to see it did the job! Thanks for the kind words!
And the effort shows. I was honestly surprised that this was your first video. Looks like you've already begun to hit your stride, Keep it up!
@@GameApologist and to this day you still describe the Sonic fanbase Without repeating yourself, god damn
Who the hell came up with the term "Blues" as the definition of a hardcore Sonic fan?
That's something I've never heard of before watching this video!
Oh dude you should have seen the comments in the article when Sonic Retro reposted it. Fantastic stuff. Everyone basically said the same thing. My favorite being "I guess we're Blues now."
Game Apologist But why call us that? What's the point and what is it trying to imply?
Is it like the Bronies from MLP or some sort of derogatory meaning?
I think it was just a thing from the 90's. You have to remember, this was way before the internet was a big thing, so I'm sure this was a more isolated fanbase than what it is today. Probably just coined a term that just didn't stick as the years went on.
Game Apologist I know about Sonic History, but never have I heard of that term being used by millennials who grew up through the 90's playing Sonic games.
Think about guys like SomecallmeJohnny or ClementJ64 and many others on youtube who haven't even mentioned that term in their videos when talking about Sonic.
Not trying to debate, just making an educated guess. I put it in the video as a joke since none of us use that term and nobody, be it someone my age who grew up with a Genesis, or anyone since, has ever used that term.
“Had a comic that’s still running today”
O h n o
That hurt hearing that.
For reals. It was at the time, but the one that's going today? SO MUCH BETTER. It didn't have Archie Comics' uptight rules and shit, it's doing what the same writer from the Archie series mostly wants without stepping on anyone's toes, and it's doing so well, it's getting spin-off series. So something good as come from cutting off ties from Archie, at least. Archie got its panties in a bunch after the Ken Penders fiasco.
@@lunayoshi The Archie comics had WAY too many insert fan characters. And wtf was that creepy "future" comic? Yikes.
@@creepy.bstanbtsbtw There really was, and the first 25-years-later was a huge waste of time and page space.
Still practically the same comic team. Miss some of that other cast, but it feels like the Archie book with Flynn running the ship. Statement hasnt aged, but as far as Im concered, Sonic is still killin it in comics.

IGN: Sonic is everything wrong with the 90s.

Everyone loves the soundtrack. Not so much the actual game.
*he must never know...*
If it wasn't for the soundtrack I never would have honestly liked it
I like playing it as a case study in how much can go wrong in the development of a game.
8:00 was the best montage I've ever seen
Anybody who claims Sonic was never good when Sonic 3 & Knuckles (and to a lesser extent, Sonic 1 and Sonic 2) exists has objectively the wrong opinion.
I think sonic 2 to an almost equal extent but i can see what you mean
I'm am adventure fan myself
& Knuckles.
And Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic 2, 3K, and Mania were great. Sonic 1 and CD were fun but they had their flaws. I'm just not a fan of anything from the 3D era, but that's just my preference. If I would have grown up with the Dreamcast and not the Genesis, I'd probably feel differently.

Hello Stuart, I’m Ross and I’m a Sonic fan as well.
I am chris, and i also happen to be a sonic fan.
I'm a sonc cd fan
Hello Stuart I'm tahaj and I'm a Sonic fan
Let's be honest: IGN was never good.
Eh, I don't mind them. That clip aside, the dude who kicked off that conversation (Brian Altano) has made me laugh more often than a lot of today's professional comedians. Still, I understand the frustrations people have with the site as a whole.
This year all their reviews have been the same, everything has been either a 7 or one point below or two points, but generally everything has just been nothing but 7s. It’s like their favorite number or something.
While I agree that having a difference of opinion is a good thing, look at my comment history for proof on that... The IGN thing was not okay, because it wasn't just an opinion but they added a bunch of stereotypes about the fan base as well onto that.
Not to mention the fact that they just said it, and that was it. There was no baseline for discussion or anything. Just, Sonic was never good, End. Which as an organization that's whole purpose is supposedly to review video games also puts the entire company in a bad light, because they can't even do that correctly. They thought, "oh all the content creators are hating on these games right now, so we can too." which once again, for a company that reviews video games is very toxic behavior no matter the franchise in question.
Also, corporate game critics are corrupt, trying to capitalize on video game buyers.
What irks me most is the hypocrisy regarding their branding. IGN gave tons of Sonic games great reviews, Pocket Adventure getting a 10/10 from them. Sonic Mania got a great score. Game Scoop IS IGN so the Game Scoop host's opinions are those of IGN at a base level. It's inconsistent and makes you question if IGN is a reliable website for game reviews. Doesn't matter if each employee has a different opinion, you go to IGN reviews for IGN opinions and they can't seem to decide if the series is bad or good.
You summed it up pretty well
I agree, normally one shouldn't immediately bash a difference of opinion... but oh boy. They really deserved to have the laser focused hatred from the sonic community at that point. (even if they only deserved it for a short while)
This cannot be your FIRST video, you sound like an already well known channel, great work.
OH, YOU!
@@GameApologist my first Sonic game was knuckles chaotix that's how I got introduced in the Sonic series I didn't even know Sonic untill Sonic classic collection on the DS :()
I laugh when people say Sonic is "Hold right to win" that is always classic to me. I once believed that silliness until I actually sat and honestly played it for myself.
And on the other hand, everyone seems to be ok with Mario's "Fly over the stage to win". You really have to force yourself to play suboptimally by not picking up feathers/capes so that you actually get to play the game.
I'm a big Sonic fan, and as a joke, the only consistent thing is inconsistency, but, we should keep giving them chances, so, they'll eventually get it right
Game Alchemist.Agreed.I always see people saying that Sonic Team has gone bad and even dropping the series, but I know,it's going to get better. So I'm a fan for life. Are you?
@@hypergoon1152 Same with me tbh the thing is developers always swap so it can really come out either way but this whole decade has more had good games then bad if you count mania and same thing there fans will become devs and make something great and even if it takes a long time I'll still will be a fan and doing level design for that hedgehog not sure if I'll be working for sonic team but who knows
@@hypergoon1152 I think I really got into it when I started reading the Archie comics, around 11-16? It's been a while, but I also had Sonic colors at the time, and that was a lot of fun, and especially with playing mania
I always felt the “finger wag” in the opening was supposed to be a “whoop-de-doo” gesture. Like he’s sarcastically saying, “ohhhh lookit me, I’m going on an adventure!”
Nah, Sonic is just searching for John Connor...
I look at it as if he's saying "Oh no you didn't, girl". Well, something like that. Robotnik's been naughty and now he's going to be made to sit in a corner in a circular room.
I saw it as "You have some nerve picking up this game! Now you're here, let's get on with it!".
DR. eggman or robotnik... adults have fights about this.

It’s a hard act to walk the line between trying not to be bias and admitting you actually like something, and you nailed it. Thanks for this and other really great videos when I REALLY needed them. Also, thanks for being a non-toxic positive voice for our community.
Anyone else appreciate the smack sounds edited in for the Mario segment?
"Mario made dinosaurs lame!"
Meanwhile in Oddysey...
...I'm gonna pretend I didn't read that
Hm, interesting video! I was a bit worried during the first half, thinking you'd make the same video everyone else does, but you pulled it out in the end, and it was well made! You gave some intelligent, constructive criticisms to the series, and although I do not agree with all of them, you made some good points! The video was well edited, well written, and over-all, well done. I hope to see more from you in the future!
You absolutely will, thanks for the feedback!
Of course, don't mention it!
8:00 is so relatable because i literally wrote an essay like this to my friends cause they kept telling me that mario was way better lmao
Dang, I feel like your channel should be required viewing for all moderately interested in the blue blur. Fantastic stuff.
Omg this narrator has a super awesome voice!
I smell potential. Slubscurbed.
And I smell a William Koskinen.
And it smells GREAT.
HOW DID YOU KNOW M- oh wait right.
Well, as a self aware sonic fan myself I do anticipate what else needs to be said. I also can't wait for what different games there are to talk about, in a few more years I bet you could talk about mass effect 3 again. One thing that i'd like to point out you said at the end of the video something about being a grown adult talking about a blue hedgehog, like, I'm not going to watch some kid talk about it, their comments on the situation would be WAY less composed.
I appreciate that. Mass Effect 3 is absolutely on my radar. That will have to be down the road simply because I never beat 2, let alone 3. Still, I can't imagine it deserves all the hate that comes its way from what I've seen.
Also appreciate hearing from a fellow Sonic fan. Part of the reason why I wanted to start with this was to have actual conversations with people like you, people like us. None of my friends really care a whole lot about gaming, let alone the hedgehog, so it's nice to get this out and have people respond and chat it up with me.
Yeah, the me3 ending has been analyzed to death so anything else now would seem late to the party. Enough about that though. But yeah, in terms of sonic, my opinion on its continued success is the character design and i'm glad you brought it up. There is a reason there are so many fan characters, so many canon characters! I feel like sonic boom is dropping the ball on the design on some of the background characters, but the main cast still have some of the charm. Like, when was the last time you saw a mario fan character or a disney cartoon character.
Also I'm still trying to figure out what sort of games would go on your show.... well, other than the ones you mentioned. I do not like tomb raider, lol.
It's just going to depend on whether or not there's something to say, really.
Sometimes it's going to be utterly terrible games, stuff I don't like myself, and in those cases I'm going to do my best to convey why there's a fanbase at all.
In other cases it'll be games I really do love, but within a fanbase it could be considered a weak link.
Like I said at the top of this video, it's pretty subjective, and I'm going to take advantage of that. Hopefully, if nothing else, it will mean for fun videos, no matter how bad a game actually is.
As for Sonic, yeah I'm with you on Boom. I'm going to reserve my thoughts for a future video (and because as much as I take the piss out of Rise of Lyric, I have yet to actually PLAY the damn thing.)
..and yeah, Mass Effect 3 or No Man's Sky, it's all so recent that I feel that plenty of us are just sick to death of even being in that discussion. So I agree with you there, a little time away could do good for all of us.
33:37 OH NONONO... Past him so unaware

The first 16 minutes of this video may have been the best critique of us Sega/Sonic fans I've ever watched.
i must say, i commend you for staying so consistent nearly 7 years on. that's pretty rare for creators. the audio and editing quality has improved, but the style never changed. you still stick to strictly what interests you instead of giving in to chasing trends. but most of all, while i'm sure your writing ability has also improved, what inspired this comment is the spirit hasn't changed. you've become a bit more casual, but that's a plus
my point is: if you re-did this video, word-for-word, with the current quality, i don't think anyone would bat an eye. that's pretty fucking cool, man. thanks for all the content 🙌🏼
Always means a lot kenn, thank you for the years of support 🙏
You know what? For a first video, this was insanely entertaining. I just about lost it at the rant part in particular. I was a bit afraid starting with this video since you know how a content producer's earliest works aren't as polished, but I had a mad fun time watching this one. Took a bit long to get to the gameplay portion, but definitely worth it overall.
Earned yourself another sub, my dude! I know who I'll be binge-watching in T-Minus three minutes.
8:45 THANK YOU!!!!
When he said Mario plays it safe and is kind of boring
Me: how could you say something so controversial yet so brave”
I agree tbh
Is he wrong though.
@@Koko-pm4qq nah hes right. Why do think we got a bunch of garbage New Super Mario games this past decade. But when Mario gets ambitious, he damn delivers
The round features contrasting with the sharp edges of his quills makes for a timeless design. I think this is the same reason Goku is visually iconic.
"As a Sonic fan, there's nothing more that I hate than Sonic fans"
Yup, that's the quote that sums up my current existence.
3:16 - In hindsight looking back the fact that both Sonic ballons hit lamp posts tells me that Sonic was just trying to hit the checkpoint of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Zone level. Seriously, how fucking insane is it that of all the things they could hit and deflate on they BOTH hit lamp posts which just so happen to be the checkpoint marker in sonic games? Talk about life being stranger than fiction.
Bro I've watched this entire series, I absolutely love it, can't wait for more if you do more
These days (2020), Sega is trying to branch out again. Look at how much Love Yakuza gets NOW. It wasn't that big a deal back in 2005 when it came out, but now, there's people who LOVE it. And Yakuza, is a product of Love. How it captures the Japanese Culture (That, is Japanese Culture, right?) and is still wacky fun but also can be REAL Serious time when it needs to be. The world that Yakuza gives you, is small and tightly packed. And I love that. The game is FULL of love and detail. That is what makes that game, work so well.
Sega needs to try and figure out, "Why did this game work SO well? Why is Game X so good?"
For me, Sonic is about, RUN Fast, Do Platforming FAST, GO EVEN FASTER.
idk why but i really love your channel avatar, its really expressive and actually match your voice (for me at least)
Nick, I want to thank you for bringing me back into Sonic. I was going through a rough time in late 2020 . I wasn’t into sonic during my high school years because I thought playing sonic was childish at the time .I was embarrassed to show anyone my love for this series. I got into the series through sonic x. The first sonic games I played were Sonic and the secret rings , unleashed , generations and colors for the 3ds . When boom came out I got out of the series since it wasn’t what I grew up with.
One day, during my freshman year of college in 2020 I watched your video. I was interested of what sonic was to people who lived in the early nineties. At the end of the video I asked my self “ what is a sonic game and what makes it so good. “I made it my mission to play every sonic game . Hell, I bought a Genesis and Dreamcast to play the original sonic games. It felt weird playing those original sonic games on any other console that was not Sega. After that I started to collect the games which were hard to find.
Then playing I fell in love again with the series and found out this series was awesome. I started to express to people my love for this series. It was awesome getting Hyper Sonic in 3&k and remembering why I love shadow the hedgehog my favorite sonic character in SA2 . The beautiful music from unleashed and the Pixar like opening.
This series is important not just from one era but from all eras that have made an impact on this community. Sonic was always there for me even in my darkest moments. I don’t want that this series to die or get worse. I want this series to amaze me again not just in 2d but 3D too. I may have disagreements with you or other people of what should be done in this community. I want this series to have that magic again like it did when I was a kid .
I have a long way to go on this journey playing the rest of the games . However,I want you to show me why we love this character in the first place . Not just looking for the good and bad but, the memories and dreams we cherish for these games .
Thanks to you , not only was this series good. It was something that told me to be myself and go against the odds to find my passion in life. Thank you

I work with your sister, and when she mentioned that you were about to release a gaming youtube channel, I told her I was going to check it out. I had some mild reservations (because you never quite know what you're going to get with a new show), but I don't have those anymore. This is really profession work, especially for a first effort. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work as it trickles out of the next long while. *You've made a great mistake.*
The rant had me rolling!! Great video Nick! I really appreciate that you see all the sides of things but still have your own opinions! Hoping to seeing more man!
I finally got a chance to watch the video. and I have to say; its WAAAY better than I thought it would've been. as others said, the title was a big throw off, it makes it seem like you are going to be like one of those hipsters, or game grumps fanatics who say sonic is trash it was never good just because others say it, without bothering to have played it themselves. so, great work, hope to see you making more great videos like this.
Am I right in guessing you use Sony Vegas?
Yep!
To get rid of that afterimage blurring on motion you'll want to right click on your video clips, look down near the bottom of the menu for resampling, and disable resampling. It's on by default in Vegas, which is a huge pain. I think it's meant to make live action footage look smoother or something but for video games (especially with the amount of motion of a 3D Sonic game) it just makes things worse.
HOLY CRAP THANK YOU. ...also thanks for taking the time to throw some tips my way. That's going to be EXTREMELY useful.
I've come across your channel before, I'm ashamed to admit I didn't give it the time it deserves since I don't normally watch Let's Plays.
That said? I put on your Sonic Unleashed playlist a little while ago and I've been smiling the whole time. I'm enjoying the hell out of you and your friends commentary. I will definitely rectify my past mistakes and watch the hell out of your stuff!
Heh, that may not end well judging from the context of your inclusion of Arin Hanson in your video, unless you also enjoyed his general reaction to the series.
Well, my opinions for some of the games are...hmm. let's just say I don't intend on always looking for positives in games I personally enjoy.
...but more on point, I did not include anybody in the video I do not like or not follow. Sequelitis is a HUGE inspiration for me. I don't always agree with Mr. Raptor, but he makes me laugh and he seems like a swell guy. It'll take a lot more for me to dislike someone than their opinions on video games.
And that certainly applies to your stuff as well. Wouldn't be any fun if we all had the same opinions on everything.
a Sonic 1 fan who doesn’t like Starlight? really? _i_ like Starlight Zone!
I like Starlight so much I wish it was in Sonic Mania.
I hate when people say "one ring offers as much protectionas 100." Technically, yes. But if you lose 100 rings all at once, it is much easier to re-collect some. With one ring, you are much less likely to survive multiple hits close together. For example, most boss encounters in the original 3 & Knuckles don't have rings. The only ones you have are the ones you bring. Its POSSIBLE to juggle losing and quickly catching one ring over and over again, but its much easier, less stressful, and honestly more fun to not have to worry about it.
TL;DR - Having more than one ring is advantageous to only having one. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I'd say the same about IGN, that at the end of the day its how they feel if they weren't lying through their teeth and back tracked because Marty Silva (guy second from the far right) was interviewed a couple weeks later saying how great Sonic Mania looks. He even said he liked Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 remembering the elemental shields and how much of a throwback Mania is to those games.
"I taught myself what to do to get this out the door." Damn dude, I know you like Sonic but you don't have to take ALL your inspiration from them.
8:00

Dude, I really like what you're doing and I love classic sonic games. Wishing you the best and I hope your channel keeps growing. You've earned it.
Rewatching the first episode of the Game Apologist (and getting uncomfortable with the reminders of Game scoop, Hearing about Complaints about Shadow being an OC, (because Original character jokes are so "hilarious") The Werehog, 06, RoL,Sonic and Shadow having weapons, and just taking potshots at other fans and the fandom even if all of it was just to bring up examples in context to ask the question about Sonic being good) and it intrigues me and makes me look at the Classic games through different lights

Glad that bit still holds up after a couple years. Thanks for the sub!!
Thank you for covering this in such detail and expressing the thoughts of so many 90's boi Sonic fans like myself.

8:00-9:35 made me laugh so hard... Not sure why, but it was geat stuff, and made me feel a lot better. Haha.
Anyway... Sonic was good. Not always (inconsistent), but damn it, the series can find its footing again and reach greatness once more, there just... Needs to be effort put into it again.
I think I have found a kindred gaming spirit. Sonic 3 & Knuckles was my first introduction to Sonic, and worked my way backwards (Sonic CD being my favorite title), but the main point that Sonic is important cannot be stated enough. The music, the attitude, then there's Sega that, for better or worse, has always gone and done what no one else was doing: portable consoles? Game Gear and Nomad (Even had an experimental touch screen mobile console in the 90s). Online gaming? Dreamcast, and even the Genesis in Japan. Heck, the Master System technically had 3D glasses and the Genesis had motion controls (The Activator). And now they're investing a bit into mobile gaming before many others even thought about it or took it seriously, and the virtual Sega Arcade on Steam is mod friendly and even welcomes those creative outlets. And let's not forget the wonderful social media snark and self-aware humor that is charming and lighthearted. Mario wouldn't do that. You won't see Master Chief making fun of his shortcomings from an official page, not like Sonic. If anything, the social media side makes Sonic more human in a way, more relatable.
Their influence is beyond the market and is why I'm a fan. It's not all about risk/reward, but for the sheer concept of trying something because the ability is there. Think Sonic sucks because of Unleashed or 2006? How about look at every CoD whose core gameplay campaign can be summed up in a DLC? Others may sell better and have more consistent track records, but if you were to ask a group of random people to name 20 video game icons from all generations, I'd bet Sonic will be in most, if not all of them, and that matters. #Blue4Life
His first video is literally perfect except for the volume other than that it’s like a normal Game Apologist Video in 2020
Or 2021. Expect more replies every year correcting it. :)
“Sonic was NEVER good”
*literally has been active for 30 years and counting, has 6 tv shows, an OVA, Three Comic series not counting the spin-offs in each company, AND god forbid HAS HAD PARADE FLOATS. And lest we forget THIS movie adaptation didn’t SUCK as bad as his rival Mario’s attempt*
Must have been one HELL of a Placebo we’ve been under for 30 freaking Years....
This video is great!
btw, I subbed.
Thanks!
He's called Dr. The Big Dog, and nobody can convince me otherwise!
My list of favorite Sonic 1 SONGS:
1. Starlight Zone
2. Green Hill Zone
3. Scrap Brain Zone
4. Spring Yard Zone
5. Marble Zone
6. Labyrinth Zone
This is just my OPINION, and doesn't reflect actual quality of the music. I like Starlight's jazzy tune, but I also know Green Hill is probably better, and certainly more important and memorable.
Great first video. This is the level of quality I usually see from a youtuber after a year or two of making videos, with the only exceptions I can think of being Alpharad and Scott the Woz. I'd say that's an achievement, especially since they still had those years of practice before starting their channels.

“We’ll hate ya if ya hate, we’ll hate ya if ya like Sonic, we’ll hate ya if ya Sonic” 😂 True
Back here after Origins, still such a relevant and awesome video Nick ❤️
I never thought I would find a video that perfectly showed my love for sonic. Thank you so much. I love your videos.
This video was amazing!!! it was so well done!!!!!
Thank you!
Good thing I'm in almost all fandoms
Same...
I'm sure we ALL have our qualms with IGN. For me, it all comes from three words: explorers of sky.
im still a kid, wasnt even born in the 90's...and i still love the classic games and havent even played a 3D game yet.
omg hahaha I just relived elementary school at 8:00 minutes haha so funny!
“adults fight about this” i lol’d
I still don't know how them simply giving Sonic a sword is bad, or giving Shadow a gun is bad either.
Caliburn was a fun character on top of adding differing and fun gameplay to Sonic's usual style. The guns Shadow used also added a varying range of gameplay styles to add on top of the traditional Sonic playstyle.
It just astounds me how them adding this extra content and further enhancing Sonic gameplay can be seen as a negative.
The idea is only bad because it comes across like grasping at straws and getting further from what makes Sonic games Sonic games at times when the series seemed to not know what it is.
Never played Black Knight but the guns were far from the biggest problem with Shadow. The series had used them before and still uses them today, just clearly cartoony ones. They weren't implemented all that well in Shadow but they didn't detract from it. Being forced into extended fights was a thing in Heroes so you can't blame the combat focus on the guns.
Gotta give Sega credit too. They were smart enough to realize that Sonic using guns wouldn't be well recieved so they stuck it on Shadow while giving him his own game. Give the fans more Shadow, give them the guns they keep asking for and keep the idea from tarnishing Sonic himself if it flops.
I actually liked the shadow game
I'm not going to argue about Black Knight, the game obviously has it's fans, but Shadow the Hedgehog's mere concept was ridiculous.
Making Shadow swear and use real-ass guns, not the E rated stuff Gamma, Omega, and the SA2 walkers had, was just stupid.
@@scarfaceAC2 Hardly. Shadow using realistic guns makes plenty of sense, G.U.N exists.
And swearing is literally a nonissue.
This was the video that got my subscription, I have watched alot of the video essays from this channel in the past two days, and this was honestly my favorite. I am an unashamed Sonic fan purely for fun gameplay and a little bit of the lore, having played most of the spinoffs and all of the main series games to completion(besides Sonic forces which is on my gaming backlog) while also having read the comics for a time and watched the TV show. The original was my first Video game growing up and I still like going back to it this day, even though Mania is my favorite. I hate this trend of saying everything that was once good is bad once you get some distance from it just to be edgy. Honestly it's the most 90's thing I've ever seen.
omfg the RANT he goes off on at 8:00 is amazing but espECIALLY THE BITS ABOUT SUPER MARIO WORLD YES THANK YOU I'VE BEEN SAYING THE SAME THINGS AND GETTING BERATED BY NINTENDO NERDS FOR YEARS UGH FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT AWESOME PERFECT LIKED SUBSCRIBED BEST VIDEO EVER
Mario World is a great game though, Sonic 1 has 1 fun zone and the rest is boring and slow
@@S.T.E.E.Z.Y I have to disagree.
I feel that Mario World goes on for too long, is too slow and has only a couple standout levels for the many it has, whilst Sonic was faster, had more recognisable environments (in fact, I recognize individual structures within levels) and is short, but sweet, providing a taster of what's to come.
I respect your opinion though.
"How do you make dinosaurs lame? Ya give it to Mario"
Hahaha!🤣
I think Caddicarus put it best:
Children do not deserve bad content just because they are easy to please.
Oh my god. Your rant about Mario had me in stitches. Marvelous.
