Thanks again for another great boat. Thanks to you I rejoined a sailing club. Cat 27, Cat 26, Newport 24 and Victory sloops. I helped with maintenance yesterday and had lunch with some of the guys. I then went on a 3 hour sail to show my sailing skills. They let me join and I now can take a Victory out whenever I want. Thanks again for doing these videos and reminding me that I just needed to get back on the water again. You really make sailing sound fun (which it is).

Grampian 26 all the way- keel and rudder are a dead give away. Too bad I don’t think I was first to say that though. Great boat for someone learning to sail.

You almost lost me until you mentioned the Heat and AC. The only thing I question is the reverse Nav station, I like a forward facing Nav station but I could buckle down and change if push came to shove. Wonderful Yacht but I would quibble over the price to get a better deal. Very nice cruiser!

Aren't the ones that open "portholes" and the ones that don't "portlights?" That was my understanding. But I could be wrong. Not like that's ever happened, but I suppose I _could_ be...
Whoever buys this boat will have demonstrated that he or she has more going for him or her than just a bank account. It seems to be a very fine piece, well-constructed, well laid-out, sturdy and seamanlike and well-adapted to the task of blue-water cruising while still being of shallow enough draft to be useful in a large number of anchorages. Apparently this Walter Schultz guy had a handle on these things.

Great boat!!! I bought the book you recommended, Wolds Best Boats" and used it to search for all those makes and models. I found the boat you reviewed through that search! Great to see you Gents bring the character of the boat to life.
When the damn covid thing stops - I'd like to head to the US, grab a boat like that Shannon and sail home to Sydney.
Keen to know if you know anything about converting a US boat from 110v to 240v - can you just update the inverter?
Also - keen to see if you Gents could review a Hallberg Rassy. I like the simple Swedish designs I think...

There is lake, sea, and rivet sailing, coastal land dwellers may have Ocean, sea, fiord, inlet sailing, and time and resources permitting, blue water Ocean sailing including Great Circle. For S and East Coast, shallower draft and center-board vessels for the Caribbean (oh, also for Micronesia and Indonesia.
There are many millions of willing wanting or actual sailors around the world.

Sorry Cap, This is the 2nd boat you reviewed that was IMO (and from some comments) out of the price range of a large portion of your viewers. Due to this point I almost didn't even view this video and I have been with you since the beginning and often one of the first to comment. Consider your viewers (and yes your membership is growing) some are crazy for sailing, really got the bug, this boat is doable but it's a stretch. Now consider what a newbie may not, maintenance and slip cost. Like so many buying too much house or a old vic, yes.
    Ok having said that.
IMO the layout for a boat this size could have been setup more conservative adding a cabin instead of two 1/2 heads. Was it really equipped for long haul cruising? Where was the water maker, the solar panels, a wind turbine, the battery bank (lithium?), where was the dinghy strap down for open water, how old were the sails, how many sails, how much fuel and water? No composting heads. Etc. Yeah I know a survey is always mandatory but to show what appears to be a dream boat (almost your words) at a price point of nearly 300k is IMO a bridge to far unless you are going to move your past practice price range up. I like to seeing nice boats that are affordable to the working guy retiring or with some disposable income (I actually looked at the Calypso before you reviewed it), but beyond 150k is a tease.
All this written, I still am a fan.
    IMO
    Respectfully
Fair winds and smooth sailing, yes.

When I was very very young and living in nyc I would go with my parents for a walk on fifth ave and back then there was a ss kresge 5&10 with a mile long lunch counter where you would wait for the best milk shake for a dollar (maybe less) with sweet tooth satisfied we would continue up the Avenue and eventually pass by Tiffany’s. Though there was no cookie jar budget for anything in that shop for our family we all bobbed-necked like chickens pecking at grain at the fabulous gems under glass there
Eventually sated with enough dream material to last another year we departed none the worse for the exposure
I don’t expect to just keep the Five and dime mentality 100% but rather give aspirational moments for our viewers to chew on and eschew upon for another year

      Awesome reply!
I can see this point and understand the intent. I am old school (not as much as you🙂) and old is work hard to get what you really want to have or do. Today, I am sure you are aware of how loo$e lending is today and some that are almost there can now buy into what they can not actually afford (at least not today), yes. This awesome boat is very doable for someone with a realistic budget of 150k to maybe heavy finance to a negotiation price of 250k with nothing for maintenance and dockage. Your membership has grown (and because you are really a find) will continue to grow. You are in affect selling boats and doing a awesome job. I actually think that people may be buying boats you review without a survey, frankly. And I think the owners of boats you review are in a much more solid position than without your review.
If you on the other hand were to review something completely out of reach for many/most of your membership such as 500k+, now that would be very interesting to see on the level of your experience with Tiffany, yes. The ultimate motivation. But not at a price point close enough for someone dreaming to get in trouble and maybe a divorce. You know how strong the call of the sea is, yes.
I am from Brooklyn with a father that loved his old cabin cruiser and I worked had on the wood and brass. Always wanted something bigger. As a teenager mother married again and my step father was a sailor. What a change of mind and the way I experienced the sea. We built a schooner (Herreshoff) rigged it traditional gaff. Sailed the NW. No racing, no matter how much sail no racing, ha. No motoring at sea. No electronics. Two Years Before The Mast. Great way to finish up my teen years. Than a little time in the USCG. Been land locked for many years and very much enjoy your show Cap and Randy's role in this thing of yours really sets it up. Great job.
I think it would be very interesting to talk story with you over a cup of tea in the cockpit nicely under sail.
Sorry I got into it but it is who I am 🤷🏻‍♂️
Looking forward to your next one.
      Look forward to next week.

Captain o captain...another ketch?...Anyways...at 25:43 min you missed one of the most unusual items
    - one that at least this German Sailor has never seen on any boat that size -
which is an Air conditioning system driven by the engine! How "cool" is that??
So while you enter the harbor under engine power, you can cool down your cabin air from the heat of the sun already and make it comfortable to sleep.
A very nice feature me thinks.
PS: You didn´t really missed it, but it wasn´t mentioned when it was right in front of you.
    What a lovely boat...
    Cheers from Germany

Good eyes Steve. That engine driven AC at 24:43 is a nice feature. This boat was set up for comfort. What do you think the item on the counter top at 27:17 is? It looks like some interior trim pieces sitting on top of a white board. Does it have to do with the hole or open area on the floor next to the toilet?

    • @tinyb69
      @tinyb69 3 года назад

That's actually for the freezer. While the refrigerator runs on a 12v system, the freezer was run off of an engine controlled compressor. It's actually a very good and efficient system.
Here's a little better info on how it works.

Especially like the aft-stateroom with attached super head. Self tacking staysail for me is worth 10 points by itself-I have few friends! Centreboard is a big plus, wish she had less draft. The gas locker in that position under the “captain” should in future be labelled in CaptainQ terminology - should be christened “The James Bond or 007 seat(as in ejection!)”! While this luxury boat(and many others of the same ilk) has so much perfection on board, it is a cause of some concern to me with 😮my rusting joints that more thought is not given to boarding either from a dingy or climbing back on board after a swim, intentional or not! Why not stern steps with hand-rails, now that could be a real winner for Walt! SkipRay, Kerry(The Kingdom), The Emerald Isle.

I love solid railings on the side of a boat, why are they not more common than wire guard rails? Is it something to with windage or perhaps complications for sail handling or that wire rails are less visable? Solid rails are just so much safer and confidence inspiring! In a modern age it’s too much money when you can find 1000’s of equally capable boats at less than half the price. Over engineered I think if it has that price tag. You can get a new 10 meter plus race/cruiser for that money with far more leg room and just as much blue water cred.

Thank you for showing this super sailing ketch. This would be the one I would use for sailing in the sunset. But like you Kaptn Q. Age is the hindering factor. Thanks again! Great video!

Please forgive a beginners question....(I'm a day sailer, just now starting to dream of becoming more)... When you refer to a navigation area, what all can you observe and control there? What can you monitor there, and can you actually steer or guide the boat from there? Thanks!!

When we refer to a navigation area we’re thinking in terms of usually a small corner of the interior of the boat with a desk and directly adjacent to that desk all the circuit breakers and electronics required to navigate and communicate. Today more and more people are putting GPS and radar systems up on the helmsman‘s Binnacle protector. Although that has some convenience especially for just casual daysailer‘s I think it will be difficult to properly navigate through heavy weather breaking seas rain fog snow etc. My preference is to have all your major screens for radar and GPS in the quiet of the navigation area where it’s dry and you can chart on paper charts your course and direction and your current position. You do need a table or flat space on smaller boats the galley table will suffice very well. But it’s nice to have the luxury of your own little office so to speak to quietly navigate the boat. Often you can have a repeater for your auto pilot so if you’re offshore and not an immediate presence of other shipping you can make adjustments to your course right from the NAV station. I believe the helmsman or deck watch should have their concentration on the horizon and the instruments relating to wind direction and wind speed. You devise a course in and give that to the helmsman to focus on. Personally I also please do you prefer a minimum of light in the cockpit at night. And a lot of the helm mounted instrumentation can be very bright and blinding.

Ok question, other than redundancy in case your inboard motor fails, why would you also have an outboard motor to attach to the boat?
