Revisiting to hear the Captain’s breathless excitement and joy going through this magnificent Ted Hood’s Little Harbor. Hope Q is faring well - his absence is much missed.
Dear student of Edson...The cable clips (clamps) are installed backwards on the quadrant cable. The U bolt should be on the "dead" end of the cable as it crushes the wires it is holding. The old timers taught "Never saddle a dead horse" to remind that the "saddle", (the cast or forged half) of the clamp goes on the "live" end of the wire rope so as not to damage the wires. Jus an FYI... I love this channel and the level of detail you go to. Thank you!
I think you're right. They're definitely part of a hydraulic circuit and located where they are I had guessed that they're for a hydraulic jib furling system, but that guess was dependent on whether or not something like that existed. Genoa furler, nice. I wonder if that boat has a hydraulic bow thruster and they just ran a separate circuit for the furler?
Hit me a few days later...they are the fitting s for the hydraulic furling systems for both the headsail and the staysail. We should have focused on that after just having seen the rig on the Oyster ...but that was all rigged and ready to go
OK guys I'm starting to get price whiplash here. Last week's boat you could have bought for the money from a garage sale and this one I'd have to mortgage the grand kids. Either I slept through it or you didn't talk about the spars, but there was soooo much on that boat to talk about. Keep the good stuff coming guys you make Thursday's one of my favorite days of the week.
so this week you can still use the garage sale but, you will have to throw in the house and the garage as well but then you won't need any of that as you step aboard your new home
Just a little more detail on the location, Melville RI was the home of the US Navy Net Depot and the PT Boat Training Center. John F Kennedy spent time at this very location training to become a PT Boat Captain. MTBSTC Melville (Motor Torpedo Boat and Squadrons Training Center) was the primary training location for the entire WW2 period for both enlisted crewmen and officers. I have visited there before and thought it at least deserved to be mentioned.
Thank you Jerry .. i misspoke thinking of the torpedoe range across the way. I was stationed in Newport in late 60s at the naval station. Great area ..Thank you so much for your detail We love getting these personal updates
Those fittings on the front are for the optional “bowsprit seat”. It is hydraulically actuated with functions that include but not limited to; telescopic extension, port and starboard swing of up to 85°, and a teak framed seat that is able to swivel 360° in either direction. The perfect addition for the consummate bowsprit enthusiast. 😉
Magnificent piece of sailing art…this has the most headroom of any yacht that I can remember. The cockpit is hands down the most beautiful I’ve seen…thanks for presenting it to us…just shy of 800K is truly stunning but all dreams should be so grand! Happy Holidays!
Of all the high end dream yachts you’ve featured, thus would be my favorite of that bunch. At 59 feet it’s a big boat, but the interior simply goes on and on. Unbelievable. Enjoy the holidays Q&R.
11:44 pretty sure that is a rudder position sensor “autohelm 7000” I am told it improves the autopilot performance in a following sea. I’ll let you know when I get mine installed.
I love the newer "foredeck" transition clip taken from the bow. It takes me out on the water. What a fantastic vessel! So many extras and everything is bulletproof. Only in my dreams...but what dreams.
This is, without any exception, the best boat y'all have looked at. It's everything I could ever want. Sadly.......I am 5 years away from being able to execute on Project: Circumnavigation so....yeah. Whoever buys this is going to have an amazing vessel. Thanks for sharing it with us.
@@YachtHunters We have discussed that... 🙂 We have a financial plan that gets us there but I have to do my part. I know there's a lot of advice to "just do it" but I have a lot of family obligations that, should I not be positive I could take care of them, any passagemaking life would be quite miserable for me. Being an Overly Responsible Person has its downsides, don'tcha know..... :) I'm confident the vessel I need will be there when I am ready to cast off and live the life. Wow is correct! What an extraordinary Sailing vessel!!!! Thanks a million for sharing Capt! A live-aboard that can take you anywhere in the world you want to go.
That's a whole lot of luxurious Yacht/Ship. The price is a discount if she surveys well, which I'm sure she would. Way, way out of my price range but man is she the stuff dreams are made of... Thanks Gents for bringing us another amazing find...
I own a Hood Gulfstar 40 with the delta hull, draws 4 feet with board up, 11 feet down. The centerboard is a 7ft blade, 63008 derived section with 30 inch chord at the root tapering to 20 inch chord at the tip. Goes upwind superbly, tacks through 75 degrees when the wind is over 8 knots. These Hood centerboarders are genius boats. The 4 foot shoal draft gets you into anchorages where many boats can't go, yet you still can sail very well on all point of sail. The delta hull form means very low wetted surface, even with high displacement, so these heavy boats actually sail fast in light winds, even offwind when you can reduce the wetted surface cranking the centerboard up. I grew up cruising and racing a sistership to my Gulfstar 40 and won a room full of trophies on it. My current Gulfstar 40 I've had 4 seasons and won more than 30 races so far. We get unfamiliar competitors come up to us after races being surprised at how fast our 47 year old 28000 pound 40 footer sails.
I love Little Harbors with one exception, I would never buy a boat with a drop keel or dagger board and Ted Hood loved them. I know it’s to get into shallow waters but I prefer deep water sailing. Just my preference. I think it is a 90!
Since we have been doing this series, I have had a number of my notions modified a bit. There is a plus to this shallow draft design. We know of an elder couple who went around the world and the canals of Europe in their Bermuda 40 and NEVER USED THEBOARD ONCE. A lot of sailors going long distances rarely beat to windward. I think Teds design will sail to windward just fine with the boars up , not like a 12m , but then that's not necessary but put his foil board, on that rare moment needing an extra boost to claw of a lee shore, then go ahead and set it .. My pb drew 8' and it was fine in New England and Nova Scotia and Bermuda but i would have been limited in the Chesapeake, the keys and the Abacos
90 points and truly worth the rating. Excellent content. Merry Christmas to the good Captain Q and First Mate Randaaa family and friends. All my time was spent on Fedship Bertram Stephens and Huggins. I watch your channel for the right one.

Hi Captain, what a marvelous Vessel. And as always you and Ran Day are to much fun.. I have been looking at Sailboats for a long time have owned a couple. First was what I would call a wet boat a Chrysler Mutineer, lots of fun and a great way to learn Sailing. My Second and Favorite was a Catalina C30 tall rig. Great first cruiser…. As of late I have been looking at a Gozzard 36’ Cutter There is one in Wisconsin right now and just under $100,000. I mainly like to navigate around the Great Lakes and while that’s not Blue Water it can be quite a treacherous. Interesting boat. Thanks much for the tour. Having a deep centerboard is indeed an interesting and useful approach. The layout looks very seaworthy. Woodworking great. 11:42 the "autohelm" is probably a rudder position sensor for the autopilot. Music, please?
I think you're right. I wonder if there's a hydraulic bow thruster and they ran a separate circuit for that? I'm surprised they have hydraulic furling motors, hydraulic systems are usually leaky and attract dirt and stains.
Can you do a boat tour/review of the Heritage 12 meter sailboat we see in your intros? Yes I know it's not for sale, but it would be very interesting to see and learn about design of this boat.
The Dyna Plate isn't balls suspended in epoxy, they are bronze balls (bb's really) smashed together under high pressure. Using the bb's maximizes surface area of the alloy to the water, massively more total surface area than a plate of the same size would be. If you cast the bb's in epoxy you'd limit the surface area contact to the water. The Dyna plate should never be ground or sanded clean, best way is to soak it in a mild acid to remove the patina.
Love it! When I fantasize about winning the lottery; I will fantasize about sailing this vessel. Thanks, it's still within in my vicarious vacation budget, 😆 !
I love my classic boats but since I started working for jeannuea and sailing and delivering brand new jeannuea sailboats I've gotten spoiled lol loved meeting ya at Annapolis boatshow, I did get to pick up a valiant 42 few weeks ago
Love these presentations. Would be tempted to fly to the US - and buy a US yacht. This one looks excellent. I won’t take the oligarchic jab of power, however. Good value though in the US. God bless from Germany. Hang in there - and great sailing.
Bloody hell gentlemen. You're going farther and farther away from my budget for my passage maker. That said. Little Harbor boats are pure yacht porn! :) Having watched another exemplary video. I would reclassify that Little Harbor as a very exclusive floating gentleman's club. Not just a sailboat or yacht. Here's a question for those that might be interested. How would you value a Little Harbor 50 foot ketch/sloop. (I forget which) Built in a highly respected UK yard. But to Little Harbor design. Compared to the same boat. Built in the Little Harbor yard.
Early hood designs were spread over a number of foreign yards built as one offs until he built in his own yard i taiwan..We did a 46' yawl built in the Netherlands and the quality was there. maybe not the Asian finish of woodwork but entirely seaworthy Firefly was a beauty we did a while ago... what are the other details on the fifty that you reference
@@YachtHunters Well she's called Deerhound, has a full keel and has been on the hard in Waterford for over a decade. Owned until fairly recent times by a Guinness and raced out of Howth Y.C. (Dublin) She's a project. Allegedly with about 80%+ of a refit done. She has beautiful lines. However, down below is typical of pre-war designed yachts and she's laid out as more of a racer, than a cruiser. She's perhaps better suited to classic regattas etc. Rather than long passages. That said. No veneers that I could see down below. All solid hard woods and bronze everywhere. I've watched everyone of your videos. Travelled hither and yon with you from the start. Sadly, I have a memory like a black hole. Everything goes in. Nothing comes out again :/ Plus when you review boats like Little Harbors, Oysters and similar. I find myself captivated, like you are when you see a beautiful woman in the flesh. The world could be tearing itself apart around you. But all you have eyes for is the vision in front of you :)
Oh my God! Captain Q novice that I am totally agree with the 90 rating. What a dream boat pre-Christmas presentation. Sea Dog has all sorts of room to explore and find comfort. What a beautiful boat this would be perfect for grandkids to learn sailing. Safe design all built in to a very special Ted Hood design. Thank you so much! ❤❤❤
11:56 - Those cable clamps are on back to front . The bridge ( saddle ) should always be on the main cable not the tail ( dead ) end ." Never saddle a dead horse " is the old saying in rigging . Edit - just saw that it has been mentioned already below .
You have room for your family there friends a cook , crew and a nanny that thing is BIG And when was the last time you saw windows in an engine room with it's own lighting .Randi Great change of pace by going under deck and showing the belly of the beast and the hard working un sung hero's of the making of a good day at play.

Wow would be a nice Xmas present, dream yacht Captain. Don't think it would fit under the Xmas tree but must be getting chilly up your way guys. PERTH is getting pretty warm
Boat for cruising big oceans and live aboard luxury. I’d like a knowledgeable captain to steer this ship and a good nimble deck hand. Then I’d live my best life aboard. Finally seeing all the world and watching sun rise and set over crystalline azure seas.
@14:00 I think that’s the hook you set when you want to make your own mooring ball…because you won’t get back on the boat! 😂 Also, merry Christmas to both of you and your families, may God bless you all.
I do not like the Formica look of modern boat and this more classic solid wood design is the best I have ever seen. This boat is magnificent , woa!!I cannot understand anybody buying a new boat when such a beauty exist,
This is a stunning example of what a sailboat can be, BUT....... the charm of this channel has always been reviews of old boats that the average person can buy. And it seems that the Capt. is drifting away from this formula as of late. I would like to make another request for more trailer sailers. You have had a few. The Catalina 25 comes to mind, but even that boat, while technically trailerable, is not really a trailer sailer. A trailer sailer, by my definition is generally 20ft or under, not fixed keel. Something you can launch single handed in a half hour or less. I think the Sunfish is the only boat you've done that I'd put in this category.
Cap. Heard Lyods of London exited recreational boat re-insurance market/ with repercussions. Two years ago my BoatUS policy (NY/NJ) went fm $400 to $1400 w/o claims. (Got Progressive policy $650) BoatUS Reason given was my 1979 O'Day Center Cocpkit sloop was 40+ years old. Are you hearing the same - what can we do? I even converted to electric (Thoosa) back in 2013...
Captain my Captain. This is a ship. All points are well deserved. I'm intimidated though. I would need to hire Sir Captain Q to sail it for me as well as a couple of college kids and Ran Day to film and supervise. Maybe you should add novice/intermediary/professional class to your ratings as well. Side note. Would this not have a better design as a ketch or yawl being the size is massive? Even with a lottery win this is too much boat for me. Question: What length requires a captain's license. I always thought 69 ft and up but maybe I am wrong. It happens. Lovely episode Captain Q . I shall dream of south seas and inviting islands tonight. Thanks guys.
First of all you wouldn't have to hire me ...just feed me ! Interesting observation about the rig. Hood originally designed many of his boats as Yawls. After designing the in- mast furling system, he felt the mizzen was superfluous. I guess i would like that second stick myself. You don't need a captain's license to sail any owner private vessel unless you are going to carry passengers for hire.
Besides the incorrectly installed wire steering cable clamps (and there should be 3 clamps, not two), Portable Gasoline tanks MUST NEVER be stowed below deck EVER!! I’ve seen 3 boats explode in my time, all three due to gasoline below deck.
28,000 hours is 13 people working full time for 52 weeks. Actually it's a little over 13 people. Those two elbows are definitely some sort of hydraulic fittings, they look like stainless steel swagelock fittings but I can't imagine what they'd drive? Do they make hydraulic drive jib furlers? If yes then that's my guess. But since they didn't seem to be capped off then who knows what they are. If they were part of a hydraulic circuit then they'd definitely be capped off when not in use.
Was that 2 more of those fittings a little further back behind the capstands? They are pointed forward...Hmm? Also, when's the last time you saw a glass hatch on a propane locker 🤔 hmm.
Hit me a few days later...they are the fitting s for the hydraulic furling systems for both the headsail and the staysail. We should have focused on that after just having seen the rig on the Oyster ...but that was all rigged and ready to go
your Lordship : just drain the moat and let half your staff go and you will be able to go to your banker and show him you are serious about your personal cost overruns and that you really need this boat !! right? Love these presentations. Would be tempted to fly to the US - and buy a US yacht. This one looks excellent. I won’t take the oligarchic jab of power, however. Good value though in the US. God bless from Germany. Hang in there - and great sailing.
Bloody hell gentlemen. You're going farther and farther away from my budget for my passage maker. That said. Little Harbor boats are pure yacht porn! :)
Having watched another exemplary video.
I like to look at this kind of boat, but that is the extent of my involvement.
(Dublin)
She's a project.
Captain GQ here. Watching your channel. 👍
Welcome aboard, Q 👍
You have room for your family there friends a cook , crew and a nanny that thing is BIG And when was the last time you saw windows in an engine room with it's own lighting .Randi Great change of pace by going under deck and showing the belly of the beast and the hard working un sung hero's of the making of a good day at play.
.....but, did you watch her cutting through the water smooth as silk
@@YachtHunters Rest assured I did indeed and sleek she looked indeed .I never not watch your whole videos .A 90 ? A lesser person might think you were smitten with this one .
The two fittings on the bow are for hydraulic furler.
Wow would be a nice Xmas present, dream yacht Captain. Don't think it would fit under the Xmas tree but must be getting chilly up your way guys. PERTH is getting pretty warm
Now we're talking! But I will have to wait for the next stimulus check before I can buy it. 😎
you may not get it in time but ...keep checking the mailbox...ill be checking mine thank you for watching
Boat for cruising big oceans and live aboard luxury. I’d like a knowledgeable captain to steer this ship and a good nimble deck hand. Then I’d live my best life aboard. Finally seeing all the world and watching sun rise and set over crystalline azure seas.
nice to see a 30 year old boat that held its price. Its a.tie with Firefly. You're going to need a new rating wheel. Keep up the good work.
That's the plan! Thanks for watching ..
Art on the water .
Ty u 2, n happy holidays
Happy holidays!
Hydraulic roller furling?
zing!!! it hit two days later mind fog really dum here especially after just seeing the oyster but of course she was rigged thanks for chiming in
Much too rich for my blood. But always happy to tune in to your newest post. 🌞🌴⛵️
isn't fun to watch and peek inside these beauties....do buy that ticket this weekend..... just in case
@14:00 I think that’s the hook you set when you want to make your own mooring ball…because you won’t get back on the boat! 😂
Also, merry Christmas to both of you and your families, may God bless you all.
Bill Shaw's Pearson 40 had a similar underbody.
that is a beautiful boat...beautiful.
Could those be hydraulic fittings for a roller furling system?
I do not like the Formica look of modern boat and this more classic solid wood design is the best I have ever seen.
This boat is magnificent , woa!!I cannot understand anybody buying a new boat when such a beauty exist,
Wonderful boat. Cheers to you.
Wish I knew about this Little Harbor 59 before I bought my stupid house.
housing market hasn't dried up yet ???
How about those little hydraulic things at the bow are for hydraulic furling?
Three quarter of a million dollars and it's a project boat . WOW !
Ah, to dream! Thank you for the wonderful hallucinations!
Thanks, paul… she’s a good one to dream about!
PS... 37ft.... Gel batteries - not Lithium
Now that is a yacht.
Looks like fittings for a hydraulic roller furler.
zing!!! it hit two days later mind fog really dumb here especially after just seeing the oyster but of course she was rigged thanks for chiming in
Hydraulic roller furling headsail are what the fittings are for...
Another fully dressed lady absolutely stunning I would say it but I can't bring myself to whoever is the next custodian will be a very lucky person
yes Rob .... what else can i say
@@YachtHunters Hot dogs it is then. Thank you for clearing up those questions. Happy trails.
hydraulic lines for roller furling on the foredeck... i think (:~:)
Besides the incorrectly installed wire steering cable clamps (and there should be 3 clamps, not two), Portable Gasoline tanks MUST NEVER be stowed below deck EVER!! I’ve seen 3 boats explode in my time, all three due to gasoline below deck.
probably an oversight but I couldn't agree more
The nuts and fittings on the bow are for the hydraulic furler.
Nice going . I can liv on that boat. Sel my house and disappear over the horizon
Nice one. Thanks.
Ok, that’s the boat for me!
Amazing boat !!
a real stunner!
Pneumatic furling system @ 13:26?
Was that 2 more of those fittings a little further back behind the capstands? They are pointed forward...Hmm?
Also, when's the last time you saw a glass hatch on a propane locker 🤔 hmm.
Hit me a few days later...they are the fitting s for the hydraulic furling systems for both the headsail and the staysail. We should have focused on that after just having seen the rig on the Oyster ...but that was all rigged and ready to go
It’s about six boats too expensive, but beautiful
your Lordship : just drain the moat and let half your staff go and you will be able to go to your banker and show him you are serious about your personal cost overruns and that you really need this boat !! right?
You know i like to tease but imagine how our lives would change if we just took the bull by the horns
I have to say I’m a little surprised this received such a high score when it’s missing a 2nd mast. 😉
Little Harbors are the best.
they certainly are terific
Hey Randy, where can I get a pair of those shoes?
