Definately notice the wisdom in this review. So many reviewers compare things like suspension to performance measures that are not necessary to the purpose of the car. Mitsubishi has obviously saved the buyer money on things the majority of buyers don't need.
Great review, honest and concise. Mitsubishi has offered a great package at a competitive price, as a pioneer in this area it's the intension to minimise compromise and make it available to everyone, it's cutting edge technology so if you're "green minded" and don't want to be ripped off from numerous other bigger manufacturers offering similar products you can't go wrong with the Eclipse Cross PHEV. Looking forward to the all new Mitsubishi Outlander that's recently been released in North America and in huge demand. 👍🏻
Seems like a perfectly good car targeted to a specific Audience. Even though I’m far removed from that market, it appeals to me that there isn’t too much ‘bling’ and stuff that seems to affect so many cars these days. I’m definately one of the “less is more” brigade in this area (unlike horsepower and torque figures!!). Nice review, Nathan.
I've just bought one because I have solar panels om my house & a battery (10kw) . The battery depletes to 5kw overnight but is fully charged by 11am & I am currently giving SA power network 20 kw of my excess solar production for a paltry $1.60 which they sell back to me for $12. I plan to now use my excess to charge the Mitubishi phev up, ( the house does have a fitting for plugging in a generator when my solar battery is depleted), so the power output of the phev can run the house for a day or two if theres no sunshine. Only caveat there is the power output of the Mitubishi phev inverter is only 1500 watts so would probably have to switch off fridge & freezer. Would be good if Mitubishi offered more powerful inverter packs. say 3000 t0 5000 watts. or the possibility of adding a higher powered inverter.
Great review and nice to see Mitsubishi in this PHEV segment building a good car although a bit expensive in top specs but hey 2021 has seen some vehicle price inflation across all segments 🤘👍
I drove one this week - it shows its weight, and its shame the engine doesn't have more power for open road use, for merging , passing and hills. Its electric range depletes quite quickly too, and i do wonder why mitsubishi didn't include a button to turn off one electric motor ( ie disengage it ) so that the electric range is improved on just one motor around town..it is a comfortable car, but outshone by the Ford escape phev for me.
I spoke with Mitsubishi and they say that petrol engine never drives the wheels. The drive is fully electric. Petrol engine only comes on lightly to keep charging the battery. Where did you find cvt in it at all? And 60kw front and 70kw rear electric power is more like 200kw in petrol engines especially at low speeds haha, all because of the torque of electric engine being max at all rpm. Care to comment?
Lol. I'm a bloke who's actively considering getting one of these, until he says "given that...this car is going to be bought mainly by women..." 4:00. Hmm, might rethink it now 🤔
AC running, fan speed 1, moderate temp. Yes, AC reduces electric range but we don’t think it’s fair to turn it off - Australia is a warm place. AC is widely used.
So, is it correct to say that once the batteries are depleted, the Mitsubishi is totally dependent on a lethargic 92KWS to shift 1.8 tonnes of vehicle??
Nah. It starts to act more or less like a series-parallel hybrid, constantly charging the battery by a small amount under braking and then deploying electric torque while accelerating - then the engine kicks in
Yes if it’s the same as the current outlander there is just a single gear for the petrol engine that can engage at highway speeds when appropriate. Otherwise great review. City buyers spend the extra $’s to smile when the car tells you to top up the stale fuel.
@@Retromansite Thank you. Mechanically really simple. Reliable!!! If I was in the market for a new car I would buy the specced up Eclipse PHEV. Nice engineering.
basically.. if you already like mitsubishi, you'll enjoy it sometimes. thats how i am with my wife's outlander sport (asx/rvr). the 4b12 is a decently powerful engine for a commuter crossover. the all wheel drive was good even on the factory tires in deep snow. they're capable vehicles. the 2022 outlander has been getting great reviews, although its largely just a nissan rogue with mitsubishi body panels. like many people, im waiting for them to bring back some cars, not the evo. the eclipse and galant would be great to see again. but really anything more performance oriented. i'd be perfectly happy with a 300 hp crossover.
Agree. Furthermore, Mitsubishi add $10K for PHEV option (compared to the ICE model) but this defeats the purpose of PHEV. My current fuel cost (based on my own travel) is approximately $1k per year so I need at least 10 years running merely to breakeven...the pricing for PHEV option is disappointing.
We have driven both - The Ford is quicker, handles better and feels "nicer" to drive...big thing was though , around town with just one E motor it goes further on a battery charge...EC has two motors and gobbles up the battery faster than we would accept. EC tech is outdated compared to Ford, and way behind our Kia's...we await the Kia Niro PHEV to test.
Not exactly a head-on competitor to the Rav4 Prime. I'm routinely getting 46 miles of electric range on my Prime and average mpg (based on 55% pure electric driving) is 55.4. Plus with 302 hp the Rav4 Prime is actually fun to drive (in a a straight line at least). Truth is that PHEV's are only here for a few more years as solid state batteries will likely end range anxiety. So would I spend $50K plus on a mechanically complex vehicle that is likely redundant in 5 years? Probably not.
I need to get out from under my Covid rock. I never heard of solid state batteries until reading your post. Thx. Agreed that this space is changing rapidly as technologies develop. I’m curious as to what happens with hydrogen fuel cells, which seem to promise renewable-energy powered generation of hydrogen gas, for long range zero-emissions driving, without having to worry about disposal of large quantities of batteries at the end of a vehicle’s life.
Why should this car be primarily for women? Because it’s less polluting? That’s such a ridiculous thing to say in 2021! It’s also plain wrong when you look at the numbers: men are much more likely to buy a PHEV or EV than women
He's really pushing the fact that this is a "woman's car". Even though I'm probably the _antithesis_ of feminism, if I were a woman, I'd be pissed off to hear this kind of antiquated talk.
Fail to see the point of it really. A heavy little jack of some and master of none. Mobility scooter with a roof. One expensive step up from public transport for a forgettable domestic appliance that goes to Woolies. Eclipse Cross depreciates faster than Dan Andrews popularity. Good review tho Ponch. Found some rays of sunshine in what is a grey cloud of mediocrity.
Best reviewer on the Chasing Cars channel.👍

Nice review , Mitsubishi should drop the price a little and add in rear ac vents . It's very solid overall.
Really cool video! Thanks!
I bought mine mid Dec. 2023 ... delivery should be next week. Can´t wait to get and drive it!

Good review Ponch; within the parameters you set it's perfect. Just the thing for that go to the shops/work segment
I appreciate Mitsubishi putting an anti-reflective/matte finish on that touchscreen.
13:00 Good tracking shots guys. Nice work.
Awesome review mate, very compherensive.

With the proposed federal Electric Car Bill, this car makes sense if novated with the nil FBT. This will make it more affordable
If I could have afford it I would have bought it. I like the traditional interior of it, and I don't mind the flaws at all

What is the difference car wise between a female with no kids and a guy with no kids?
The woman’s car gets you from a to b.
The man’s car does too, while putting a grin on your face when you thrash it with no cops around?

Have Mitubishi dealt with there excessive battery degredation issue? (a software problem by all accounts)

what about your price..? I think its australian dollor??
Ponch, question is this or the outgoing outlander PHEV?
Lol. I'm a bloke who's actively considering getting one of these, until he says "given that...this car is going to be bought mainly by women..." 4:00.

I also want one and last time I checked, I still have a ding dong between my legs.
You didn't mention if the AC was running, and does that reduce the 42klm EV distance?

Way too expensive for what it is.
There is no way I would pay $50K+ if it was $37K or so that would a much better proposition.
Check out carsales the outlander with sub 60k KMs are going for sub 37k. Pretty good seconds hand proposition with the remaining warranty.
I'd buy it as a second car.

No rear air vents for a $50k + car ??? Not for me Mitsu... A very basic model apart from the PHEV component.

Please do a review on Ford Escape PHEV.
There not available in Aus

Love the new Outlander but this, I dunno, it looks dated
I’m offended they think it’s bought by women!!!!
Why are NSW plates yellow? Looks disgusting.
Tradition. But almost nobody has them on their private cars.
Why keep referencing the ‘normal’ car? Your normal is not someone else’s normal. Just call it ICE versus PHEV.

If used more as a city car better off just buy a pure EV.
Buy a lot of petrol for ten grand..
Not much during war time.
Henry Lawson ...reckon might be the odd blackout as well .⚡️
