    Love the video Don. Beautiful rig. I have a 2021 Chevrolet LTZ 1500 with the 6.2 and the 10 speed trans, pulling a very similar size travel trailer with ~ 1000#s of tongue, also utilizing air lift on rear. Getting the same mpg over a 1000 mile trip and am also very happy with the max tow. One thing I did notice is that you do not run with any sort of sway control for such a long trailer. I suggest sway control. You will improve the feel tremendously.

    Great Vid Don. Definitely going to consider the airbags for the rear. My experience with towing my trailer was that the ride is quite bouncy at times.

      Thanks Ruben! Too much air in the bags and you will bounce more 😂 Some people love them, some don’t. But when you have any weight at all on the back end, it makes a noticeable difference.

    I've been towing for over 30 years and I just found out that I have been hooking up my trailers breakaway cable the wrong way. There are utube videos that show the proper way to hook them up. The way you and I and several others run the cable will not pull the brakes on the trailer. You do a great job on your videos a lot more people could learn the proper way from you.

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад +3

      I attach my breakaway cable to the frame/hitch of the tow vehicle and make sure it isn’t tangled in the safety chains. I could switch to a quick release carabiner I suppose. Where specifically are suggesting it be attached to? Maybe there is a more ideal location and I (like others) just didn’t know! I checked out a couple vids and they aren’t really different than what I do except they may have a separate mount fabricated for it on the truck frame/hitch. My hitch receiver has 4-6 mounting spots to clip chains and breakaway cables to.

    • @rollinsms
      @rollinsms 2 года назад

      @@Donslife I'm sorry I only got a quick glimpse looked like it was weaved through the chain. This guy shows a couple ways using a carabiner the main thing is to have the breakaway pull out before the chains reach their limit. ruclips.net/video/eubR3ssLiOM/видео.html&ab_channel=TrailersoftheEastCoast

    Hello, from Calgary Alberta! Thanks for the videos, Don, I have a 2021 1500 Denali with the Performance Upgrade Package that was offered from the factory. I love it, and I tow a trailer very similar to yours. I am looking to install Air Bags, I have a leveling kit and when my trailer is hooked up it looks like I am shooting for the moon.
    I also wanted to mention a few things for you to try and maybe review.
    Anderson Hitch System: (I use this due to the winds here in Alberta) It is the best hitch I have used and it's not only a Weight distro but has an anti-sway as well.
    Arvika Bike Rack: It mounts to the front of your trailer and can hold 4 bikes, it's a Canadien-made product.
    GMC Trailer Camera: I bit the bullet and got it. My trailer is too long for it but I tricked it into thinking it was shorter.
    Look forward to other videos!

    Great video! Have not towed my 6,400 lb. TT (loaded) with my 2022 Silverado 5.3, but it is coming as soon as the snow melts in the northern tundra (Rochester, MN). I will be using my Weigh Safe True Tow WDH and don't expect to need airbags. Payload. Yes, payload has become the big towing metric for me. The Silverado is rated to tow 9,800 lbs. Payload is 1,755 lbs. With my wife, son, a buddy for my son, me, my tools, and the hitch weight we are under but not as much as you would expect. Now, my challenge is how to justify the Borla exhaust and cold air intake. Fuel economy? Right...

Such a worthwhile upgrade. I tried searching your videos before posting this, so sorry if its a repeat question... but what tires are you running on the AT4? And you're just using a 1.5" spacer and no lift, right? Just the stock 2" lift? Thanks in advance.

    Great video! We have a 2020 Grand Design Imagine 23BHE which 27'' long and about 5500lbs dry. Our tow vehicle is 2020 Tahoe RST Premier with 6.2 and it has factory air suspension on the rear similar to your Cadillac Escalade. It levels good with the combination of the weight distribution hitch however, at times I can really feel the trailer behind us. We live in Ontario and at times in some areas on Hwy 401 where it's flat and it gets bit dicey with those cross winds which I really have to slow down. I'm thinking of trading in the Tahoe for the refresh 2022 Silverado RST 1/2 ton with the max trailering pkg. and a 6.2 powerplant. The Chevy dealer is offering a very high trade-in value on the Tahoe as they are desperate for used product due to the inventory shortage right now. But I'm a little concern if the new truck will squat as it won't have the air suspension like the Tahoe. I might have to do the same set-up as your AT4 with those Air lifts but I want to see how it looks like first with the trailer hooked up. Any thoughts?

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! The truck is longer so that’s a benefit. With a weight distribution hitch you might find you level out pretty good again at that weight. If you didn’t want air bags, you could do sumo springs. I chose air due to the 7000-8000 pounds I’d be towing. Also if the hitch you have has sway control, that will help with those cross winds

    • @IROCQUE
      @IROCQUE 2 года назад +1

      @@Donslife Thanks for the input. My weight distribution is the Fastway E2 Trunnion system which has sway control built in. But yes it has something to do with the shorter wheelbase on the Tahoe that will make a difference. Also, did a little research on the Silverado equipped with the max trailering pkg. has a higher spring rate rate. I noticed the Trail Boss which is equivalent to the AT4 doesn't offer the max trailering option. So I might just try it out first and see how it sits with the trailer hooked up. I did hear good things about Sumo springs, that's also another option. If I do go with the Air bags, I'll just go without the compressor to keep the cost down and just air it up with my portable Ryobi tire air inflator.

    Great video!! Thanks for doing this. I have the same truck however in black with the 20” tires. I am about to start towing a 27 foot Airstream 6,100 dry / 7,500 wet. The tongue weight for it will be 791 pounds base. Question, what is the hitch weight on your setup? Which WDH are tiny using? How much wheel travel and off road capability would you say you lost in installing airbags? Thanks in advance

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад +1

      Hey man, my tongue weight is about 850 lbs. I don’t know the brand of the WDH but it looks like it could be Curt. There are jounce bumpers in the bags, but I am not sure if I lost too much wheel travel. A bit probably is lost as well as keeping some air in the bags would firm up the suspension as it compresses. I am not a hardcore off roader….yet

  • @spracker8
    @spracker8 2 года назад +2

    Looks like it was Easy work for You and the Truck! I have a 2017 Sierra Denali with the 6.2L and I tow a 26FT Trailer (30FT with the A Frame), thing only weighs 6000lbs. Being a Prairie Dog myself I am subject to some nasty Crosswinds, I feel like the ass end of my truck is sliding around all over the place, I have a Weight Distribution hitch as well. If there's no wind its fine but any little bit at all I feel like I am all over the place, my truck and trailer are perfectly level so I don't know if there's anything else I can do or if there's underlying issue that compounds what I am feeling behind the wheel. I am thinking about trading the Truck in for a 3/4 Ton Diesel OR the Cheaper route would be to buy a smaller lower profile trailer that isn't such a wind sail.

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад +1

      I almost went with a 3/4 ton, but I don’t tow heavy frequently enough to justify it (at the moment anyway). A heavier duty truck will help though. Crosswinds are nuts here

    Hi Don, thanks for the video. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that you had to move camp sites 3X, but I noticed you kept the truck attached to the trailer. Is that ok to leave the trailer attached to the truck or should you unhitch?

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  3 года назад +1

      I unhitched every time immediately after parking. The footage you’ve seen is probably just before or after I moved. The sites are usually long enough that I can stay parked in front of the trailer. I recommend unhitching. Also if on a road trip and parking over night, I like to use the trailer hitch to take some strain off of the truck before driving the next day.

      If you are looking for a conventional trailer or ‘pull’ trailer like mine. Consult your tow rating sticker in the door jamb. If it is a 2019+ Sierra, they’ll be a conventional trailer weight listed. It is usually recommended to tow under 80% of that number even though the truck is capable of more. So many variables with wind, raid conditions, etc. Towing a little lighter is safer. Your truck since it doesn’t have the AT4 lift, probably tows more.

    What’s the tongue weight on that trailer setup? I’ve got the 2021 AT4 w/ the 3.0L diesel. Spec says 8,900lb towing & 890lb hitch weight. I’m wondering if I could go a bit higher on the hitch weight with the air bags & a distribution hitch?

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад

      My trailer is about 840 tongue weight. Bags, weight distribution hitch, etc - I wouldn't recommend exceeding any of the manufacturers maximum ratings. My video was about my experience getting very close to the maximum ratings for my specific truck. The only thing I would add is a sway control device and some tires with a higher load range. Otherwise it pulled as good as any in it's class and felt safer (more controller) with the bags and weight distribution hitch. Cheers!

    • @Donslife

      Standard tank and a trailer this size pretty much cuts range in half. Grades, avg speed and wind strength/direction play a big part too. I’ve had tailwinds on flat grades that allowed to me to stay at the speed limit with low rpms and high gear and saw pretty good mpg improvements.

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад

      No problem:
      1 - make sure your trailer is connected to the ball. Make sure your hitch is adjusted to the correct position so the trailer is putting weight on the hitch but still pretty level.
      2 - put some air in the bags. I found 15 is good for my trailer.
      3 - hook up your WD bars.
      I hope that helps. Just don’t adjust your airbags last since they will work against what the weight distribution system is trying to do.

    Sorry I’m new to towing with my 1/2 ton and air bags. But if I get all my measurements and air bag psi configured on level ground, can I add the air to the airbags and back the truck into the trailer when the ground isn’t level? Or should you always deflate the bags to the minimum and air up after the trailer and weight distribution hitch is attached?

    • @Donslife
      @Donslife  2 года назад +1

      Air is your last step on f using a weight distribution hitch, otherwise your WD hitch will be fighting the bags. Your 2nd scenario is correct. Also experimenting with pressure is fine until you figure which feels right. 15-30 for me is food on this truck with my heavy trailer. Some may need to go up to 40-60. I was wondering why you needed to add the airbags. With Max tow package you truck has 300lb heavier rear leaf springs , when properly adjusting your weight distribution hitch with the load distribution bars it will level the trailer just fine. I did install the airbag on my 2015 GMC serria because it wasnt a max tow model .Now have 2020 GMC w/ 6.2 3.42 max tow and
    my front side loading toy hauler is 30 ft 7000lbs ish wet. I have had no tow issues where I could not see this as a need. Not being condescending just curious about the reasoning ? Thanks you have a great program.

    • @Donslife

      Makes a noticeable difference for me by reducing body roll and keeps things more stable with crosswinds. Something we have a lot of in the prairies. I never installed them to increase towing capacity. I installed them to stabilize the load and reduce sway. They are there to compliment the weight distribution hitch. I am pretty level too with the hitch set up before adding a little air to the bags. I wouldn’t care if I had them with my boat 5000-6000lbs. But my trailer loaded is about 7500+ with some cargo in the truck box. Smooth sailing ⛵️

    I think you would be much better off with the 3.0 Duramax than the 6.2.

    You've got to be WAAAY over your payload capacity. The way the manufacturers quote towing capacity is horribly misleading

    • @Donslife

      Curb weight 5556lbs
