R53 to R56 brake upgrade on the Mini Cooper S

- Hi Guys,
Today I will be upgrading my brakes to the R56 Brakes. As most of you may know the brakes on the R50/R53 Minis are nothing short of terrible, even with uprated discs, pads and fluid they still fall short of the level of braking expected of a hot hatch.
In this video we will be showing you how to upgrade your brakes, so if this is an upgrade you have planned for the future make sure you give it your full attention. As usual the parts we have used are below :)
Thanks again for watching me :)

No thank you so much for watching we are so happy these videos are helping people :) we really appreciate you taking the time to comment as well :) thanks again, Miriam xx
Jonathan and you always do a great job, obviously we all appreciate it.
Aww thank you so much! We try our best, just hard finding the time to get stuff done! Thanks for watching, Miriam xx
Nice one. Made it look so simple! Will be using this as my guide when doing mine!
Boom, I'm glad it's helping people still :) I need to do updated ones of all these now with better camera quality, etc. Thank you so much for watching! Miriam xx
only issue is the link for the r56 kit doesn't work.. is their an equivalent kit available @@ModAMiniGarage
Another great video can't stop watching them 👌
Great video! My R53 standard brakes aren’t dealing very well now it’s running more power! Will be looking into getting an R56 JCW upgrade soon!
Thank you so much :) really appreciate your words :) when you are ready get in touch and we will see what we can do to help :)
Mod A Mini Garage I’ve already had a look and will be buying from you in the new year! 😊
The brake bleeder doesn't require you to pump the brake pedal , as the system fills automatically from the bottle . By pressing the pedal you have increased the pressure to high consequently fluid sprayed out. Safety goggles are a good idea!😭
Thanks for this :) we have tried doing it just using the pressure bleeder and we couldnt get any fluid to come out... either nothing comes out the nipple or it drips slowly, we found pressing the brake pedal sped up the process and pulled the fluid through... this could be because we are using a cheap pressure bleeder or we set the pressure to low... maybe next time I will try a higher pressure! Good shout on the goggles though! that fluid went everywhere!! hahaha. Thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx

Hahaha, not sure we are educating correctly but we are giving it a go! Thanks for watching Carlos! Miriam xx
Nice video. An upgraded brake system is on my to-do list after coilovers. Subscribed...
Let us know if we can help with any of the parts for your car :) www.modamini.co.uk all the best, Miriam xx
Great video. Did mine a few years back. Just a word of warning about those HEL lines, absolute garbage!! This issue is that the brake line can slide freely within the grommet, which means the line can end up rubbing against the inside of the wheel. I suffered *complete* brake failure. I never even received any kind of reply from HEL regarding the issue. Has happened to several Mini owners that I know of. There's a fix/bodge to put cable ties tightly around the hose on both sides of the brake line.
I assume your car is lowered then? the HEL lines are identical to all the other braided line companies whether its Goodridge or someone else.... the problem lies with lowered cars and the chances are on your car the line hadn't bust just the coloured coating had worn off? We spoke to HEL about this exact issue as we had seen it mentioned... this was our reply which may help! We sell a fair few of theses (way over 100 sets in the last year!) and haven't had a single issue mentioned to us. From what we understand whatever line you choose will have this issue so worth making sure you check them regularly anyway! And don't forget they have a lifetime warranty as well :) I hope this helps in someway and thank you sooo much for watching really appreciate that, Miriam xx
"The hose HAS NOT burst. Our hoses, Goodridge hoses, and any other reputable braided brake hose will hold about 8-10 times the pressure that ANY car brake system could produce. It’s simply not true that a brake hose would ‘burst’. The only way a brake hose will fail is if a) the hose has been excessively pulled continuously in an acute angle at the inner wing end. This could be due to poor maintenance, incorrect fitting (not routing the hose in the same shape/route as the OE hose was), due to modification - lowering for example will make the hose sit in a different position to how it should do as standard, or due to a freak movement of the hose caused by something like a pot hole, speed bump or similar.
The hose in the picture below has clearly RUBBED on a moving part, and rubbed on it for a significant amount of time in order to burn through the PVC, the 4 wire stainless steel braid, and the PTFE inner hose. An excessive amount of hose must have been one side of the mid-line locating bracket. This could be down to a number of reasons, but NONE of which are down to the quality or standard of the hose itself.
We have added another component to kits this year which stops excessive movement of the hose through the line locating bracket. See attached image. This is not because lots of people have had failures, it’s just another way of eliminating possible instances like this where there is nothing you, I or the person with the car can do about a hose moving excessively (for any of the reasons above) other than regular checks/maintenance which arguably should be done on any modified car, but telling that to the customer and actually getting it done is another thing."
They closed with "Personally if I’m guessing I think most/all of the ones which have rubbed will be on lowered cars, as we’ve sold literally 1000’s of Mini brake line kits and we’d have had tonnes of complaints/issues if it was a common thing"
They acknowledge people have had failures, which is all due to the line moving through the grommet freely, but deny their product is substandard. Typical. At least you got a response :)
My car is on AP coilovers, but they're set as high as possible. I do almost all work on my car, but shortly before my brake failure, work was done on the car (wheels off, lots of stuff masked up etc), so I guess the line was pushed/pulled through the grommet by accident. I don't blame the person for this at all, the fact is it just should not happen in the first place. The grommet on the oem lines are fixed and cannot move.
I ended up replacing my HEL lines with Goodridge. Unfortunately the grommet is not fixed on those either, but at least the line is a very tight fit and doesn't move freely :)
I'd strongly advise cable ties either end of the grommet ;-)
PS. great channel and content, keep it up :)
@@JohnCarlyle I'm just about to change mine to HEL lines I got the other day so I'll definitely be doing that with the cable tie. Cheers mate.
@@JohnCarlyle i consider this advice you have given to be a real good safety point, so many people don't have any common sense and never see the obvious. So glad you pointed this out because i'm just about to do this R50 to R56 brake upgrade, so thanks John.
Nicely done Miriam. I have looked at your site for the conversation kit however I’m a tad perplexed as to which set to have , Groved with yellow stuff ?.. or pagid I’m none the wiser .
Well they are just a couple of the options we can supply them with any brands reallym the pagids are for those on a budget they work great for everyday road and the occasional b road blast... The ebc on the other hand is a touch more hardcore and for those with a heavy foot or that like the occasional track day :) feel free to message us and we can run through it all :) I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching, Miriam xx
I’m glad I have an R52 and live near Chelmsford.
Pop in anytime :) we'd love to meet you and your mini :) Miriam xx
Im Loving it my lovely Friend! your good :-) xx
Hi miriam if we upgrade the brakes do we need to upgrade the brake boost servo aswell?! Awsome video i enjoy watching your channel !
I'm so glad you enjoy it... I'm sure most people just watch it hahahaha with regards to the brakes, the standard servo is absolutely fine :) so can upgrade and forget :) if you need anything else let me know, Miriam xx
Another brilliant video.
Thanks for watching David, really appreciate that! And enjoy those snoot boots you won!! Miriam xx
Good video, though do wear safety glasses when bleeding the brakes. I have an r50 mini that needs new front calipers so may look at this upgrade. I forwarded this to my daughter who is just starting an automotive course at college. Thought it would inspire her, especially your comment about your nails.
Hahaha the brake fluid went everywhere!!! Goggles are definately a must!! I hope your daughter gets on well with her course, need to invent nail protectors hahaha :) thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx
@@ModAMiniGarage is the kit you fitted suitable for an r50 mini as may have to look into it next pay day
Yea they fit the R50 fine as long as you have 16" or larger alloys :) Miriam xx
hi , nice vid ... do the bigger front disc's fit with standard r53 wheels , is it not worth swapping the bk ones too .. ?
The R56 Cooper S Kit fits fine under standard wheels :) if you go for the larger budweg kit then there are issues with standard wheels and you need 11mm+ spacers for clearance... that being said the kit in the video it's great for the money! I hope this helps, Miriam xx
That’s brilliant do you have a website that I can look at getting this break kit from? Also do the disks come in the price or are they additional?
Hi Wesley, thanks for watching :) we sell the whole kit here with discs and pads :) www.modamini.co.uk/product-page/r53-to-r56-brake-conversion I hope this helps! If you need anything else please let me know :) thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx
Thanks for sharing...you're Great..
Well I don't know about great but thank you so much for watching and commenting :) Miriam xx
EXCELENTES VIDEOS GRACIAS. SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO
Thank you soo much for your comment and watching we really appreciate it! Miriam xx
Could I get away with just bleeding the front brakes if I don't touch the rear? Considering I don't have any special bleeding tools I really want to minimise the amount of bleeding I have to do.
Great video though, it's definitely going to help me with my install.
Theoretically yes :) it's shouldn't cause to much of a issue worth it if you can but should be OK without a proper bleed :) thanks so much for watching :) Miriam xx
Sorry to say but never do half a job, do a full bleed and renew all of the fluid in the system, the last thing you want is half old contaminated fluid. If you don't feel confident enough then pass it to someone who can do it for you.
Freaking awesome
Thanks so much for your comment and watching really appreciate it :) Miriam xx
Nice job 😎
Thanks for watching Josh, have a great day! Miriam xx
Would be nice to know what Rim-Size is minimum recommended?!😉
These fit under 16s no problems some 15s as well just depends on the wheel choice :) hope this helps, Miriam xx
When upgrading just the front do you still need to bleed the back brakes?
We always do but might get away with it :)
are the new calipers from r56 Cooper S? or regular Cooper? Are the discs also bigger?
They are brand new r56 cooper s calipers :) how this helps, Miriam xx
Great series ps have you got any older sisters 😂😂😂
Hahahaha erm.... I have a sister in law if that helps 😉 thanks so much for watching! Miriam xx
What is the gain of R56 brakes over the R53. 🙂
They are so much better for a start :) you get to install larger discs and pads and also the caliper has a larger piston so the braking force and surface area is greatly increased! All in all for the cost of them they are one of the best upgrades out there :) thank you so much for watching! Miriam xx
Hi, is there a size difference between the old and the new discs and calipers?
Yes there is :) the standard R53 calipers have a smaller piston than the R56 cooper s calipers, the R53 disc size is 276mm whereas the the R56 cooper s are 294mm they pads also have a greater surface area aswell. I hope this helps, Miriam xx
WD40 makes the brake line grommet fit in to place easily. Never had a problem using it to slide those into place.
This is cracking advice will definately give it a go if I ever change them again :) thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment, Miriam xx
@@ModAMiniGarage wd 40 is your friend on any job with a mini or any older car 😉
Have you ever done a video on a headgasket
Unfortunately we don't but next time we have a mini in for a head gasket I'll see if it's something we have time to record :) great suggestion! Thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx
Hey, are the caliper carriers left right specific?
Nope, you can turn them upside down and use them both sides :) which is really handy! Thanks so much for watching! Miriam xx
hello, these brakes enter the 17-series tires, why don't the 4-piston jcw no longer?
Thank you
Hi Arnau, the R56 cooper S brakes with 294mm discs these fit under 16 inch wheels and greater.. Ther R56 JCW discs however, are 316mm and will fit under some 17 inch wheels but not all so need to check beforehand or be prepared to change your wheels :) 18s are ideal for this upgrade :) hope this is OK and helps, Miriam xx
Thats 350 ish for a pair of calipers and a pair of discs and 4 pads plus 2 hel brake lines?
£363 all in delivered within the UK :) everything you see in the video minus the brake fluid and painting :) hope this helps and thanks for watching, Miriam xx
Here is a link if you are interested :) www.modamini.co.uk/product-page/r53-to-r56-brake-conversion
Have you got a link to the pressure pump? Want to order some brakes from you but cant see the pump on your site?
Hiya, the link to the pressure bleeder should be in the description to the video on RUclips if it's not let me know and I'll add it :) as for the brakes if you need a hand drop us a message and we can sort you out :) all the best and thanks for watching, Miriam xx
Hi can you please tell me we’re I can buy this kit from thanks

@@ModAMiniGarage hi that’s great do the come with the carrier
They certainly do it comes with everything you need :) except brake fluid :) Miriam xx
Is it possible to retrofit the later style rear caliper on an r50-r53 model
Hi there, yes it is both the R56 cooper s calipers fit and the R56 JCW Brembos fit. We sell both in our shop, link in the description :) if you need anything else please let me know, Miriam xx
Hello. What is the dość size? 316 mm or 294 mm?
These ones are the 294mm discs from the R56 Cooper S you can buy the 316mm kit here :) www.modamini.co.uk/product-page/bmw-mini-budweg-calipers-r53-r56-upgrade Thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx
What brand of paint/clear coat did you use?
We used K2 paint specifically for calipers and then followed that up with www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302248469147 this stuff seems to work really well, we have used it a couple of times with no issues. I hope this helps! Thank you so much for watching! Miriam xx
Subbed, do you ship to germany aswell? Might be getting something
We certainly do :) just let us know what your after and we can confirm the shipping costs for you :) thanks so much for watching! Miriam xx
Where can I buy this kit?
Unfortunately it's not something we can get hold of anymore :( really gutting as we sold a lot of these! You will need to buy all the parts individually but should be fairly easy to find :) thanks for watching, Miriam xx
Do any R56 brakes work? Or are they the R56S brakes?
The R56 calipers are all the same but you need R56 Cooper S Carriers in order to be able to fit the 294mm discs :) I hope this helps, Miriam xx the kit can be bought here www.modamini.co.uk/product-page/r53-to-r56-brake-conversion
@@ModAMiniGarage thank you for the quick response!
Does anyone know if they’ll fit with 16” wheel?
Hi Sam, they do fit with 16s (cant confirm all of them but yet to have any that havent!) we used to run these with MG hairpins with no issue's what so ever :) I hope this helps! Miriam xx
So I should get brake hose for R56?
You will need different hoses for the brake kit yes, you can purchase them on our website here if that helps :) www.modamini.co.uk/product-page/bmw-mini-cooper-s-hel-braided-hose hope this helps, and thanks for watching, Miriam xx
@@ModAMiniGarage hi , i live in the u.s and looking to purchase the brake lines.
