How to carry out a Supercharger Service on an R53 / R52 Mini Cooper S which should be done at 100k miles. That said this car has only covered 54k and there was no oil in the one side and very low in the other. ----- Also here is a link to the 'S Works' ebay shop where I usually source my oil - I have no affiliation to this guy btw - just a useful supplier : www.ebay.co.uk...
Update - I mention an 'oil pressure sensor' - this is actually a Crank Sensor.
Why This Video is Important:
The Eaton supercharger fitted to this engine was, when new, deemed sealed for life, this was later updated to need a service at 100k miles. I have serviced superchargers at 70k and there has been no oil left in the water pump PTO and in one or two cases I have had superchargers with the water pump PTO bearings in powder meaning we had to replace the supercharger.
No need to drain AC, just shove the coil aside, pipes are flexible; No need to disconnect the alternator, just let it hang and rest on a raised surface; no need to remove the throttle body nor the plastic air intake just remove the 2 bolts holding the throttle body and push the assembly aside a bit; Front takes 145 ml of oil not 140 ml; If the rear has no oil left that means problem with the seal behind the PTO gear which has hardened with oil being sucked into the rotor pack. That's why it is necessary to take the water-pump off, investigate and replace that seal and THAT is called servicing; the o-ring of the water pump flange needs to be replaced as well, it's a known source of coolant leakage; Non-monetarised tip for the dipstick housing: There's another groove that can accommodate a second o-ring. If fitted no need to tart it with silicon, it will be oil tight, no worries. Funny piece of British counterintuitive acting - no wonder why UK automotive industry has simply disappeared
Well I'm from America, and service these for a living. I discharge and remove the entire front clip with condenser. Bending pipes or crimping the hoses is ghetto and unprofessional. Plus you don't want to subject almost 2 decease old HVAC pipes to that abuse. Same goes for the alternator, leaving it hanging from the wiring or similar is ghetto and can damage said wiring. What does removing a nut and connector cost you? 3 seconds? No customer would tolerate that nor should they tolerate that over here.
The intake manifold and subsequent piping is removed simply for cleaning, and to refresh all the seals and o-rings. As well as subsequent coolant hoses which are probably brittle, and failure prone by this point. Again age/common sense.
The Eaton is completely disassembled, and all seals and oil replaced. The water pump and knock sensor is replaced for preventive maintenance as well as the coolant flange. You are already in there, why not? Same goes for the o-ring on the dipstick tube.
Basically any seal or gasket is replaced no exceptions. That's the American way. Probably why our auto industry is still kick a century + later. ✌🏽
First, this is a diy video, so the way he was doing it was in respect of someone doing it for themselves, not from a picky technicians point of view where every seal and gasket must be replaced because they said so because they read something on a forum...I say this as a technician and a cooper s owner.
The only second I have is an experience thing in that there is two bleed screws for the coolant, the one pointed out and a smaller 8mm by the thermostat.
Other than that, a good job for a diy charger service.
P.s being picky over 5ml of oil on a charger is like arguing that you had your car serviced and the oil isn't on max. There is always a tolerance. Just like your car oil should be between min and max, not on max.
@@tomlaing6164 We restore Eaton superchargers -M45 and M65 for most- so yeah, a bit pedantic. For the rest: lousy job, period. No point being politically correct on here.
She knows her stuff....
@@tomlaing6164 do it rite the 1st time or don't bother
These guides in RUclips are purely invaluable!
Nice to watch a true professional instead of someone guessing their way through the work, good instructional video
Absolutely no need to drain the AC or remove the condenser.
That's the first thing that made me skeptical about the vide in general.
You are 100% correct. There is enough flex in the lines to simply rotate the a/c condenser about 80° to move it out of the way and support it there. I use an old broom handle to hold it up. I’ve done it this way three times on my ‘02 Cooper S and the Air-con still has its original charge!
There are also rubber seals inside the supercharger. I would check those seals especially if there is no or very little oil draining from the reservoirs.
So much preventative maintenance recommended on the video and then skipping those steps, most how to videos do skip it and I don't understand why.
25:53...No, you're eyes weren't deceiving you... he really WAS using that tool upside down and back to front.
Watched a few of those “how to” videos now and I’ve got to say that this is the best. I’m defo gong o do this service myself now 👍🏻
Basically changing the oil doesn’t do much ,,,,if the seals is going bad all this work is done for nothing. My advice is to open the water pump side and change the inner seal is the only seal that goes bad and the oil is sucked from the rotors..
Interesting. That does seem to be the side that is always dry.
You do not need to drain the ac at all wow. Lol
I find it best as you can stress the joints if you move it to one side.
@Myrrh Curie As in Aircon compressor? Unless he said it was done assume it wasn't. When these came out apparently MINI said the oil was there for the lifetime of the car - then they said 100k - but 40k seems to be a more likely/reasonable number based on what I have heard and what I have seen - recently I replaced a supercharger because the waterpump side was dry and because of this the bearings turned to dust... It had done 80k
No - the aircon refridgerant needs to be sucked out - unless like in this case the refrigerant has escaped and there is none left
Please replace the knock sensor . If it fails, like mine, it is a pain in the ass to replace that sensor. You have to do it over and over again. Great video by the way.
Thanks for the video, going to have a look at a 2005 model tomorrow, and I'll make sure it has had this service done, no way in hell I'm doing this 😄
If there wasnt any oil in one of the sides, wouldnt that be a huge cause for concern? In my experience the oil leaked out via one of the seals and it gets vacuumed out. Wouldnt just adding more oil be pointless if it's just going to get sucked out again?
very good point. its called the pto gear chamber. where it houses the pto gears that drive the water pump. many common failures of the pto gears running dry with no oil and wont drive the water pump and causing car to overheat. he should have inspected the pto gears or at least check backslash. and then reseal the champer with some gasket maker.
@@noneofthese94 so to inspect the PTO gears and change the seals do you just have to take the plate off the water pump side?
@@nickbohman2997 Yes.
Agreed
Along with ModMINI's guide, your guide and his covers it all. I don't remember seeing modMINI mentioning or showing how to drain the aircon, along with that and some other very helpful tips from you, you made a great vid. I'm a complete newby to car mechanics, having just purchased a 2006 Cooper S, I'm looking to do all the work on it myself. Your guide is clear and invaluable. Thank you
Modmini probably didn't mention draining the AC because it's not necessary...
Yeah, don't rain the AC. not only is it not needed, its expensive to have recharged, and illegal in the US to purposely vent refrigerant to the atmosphere, it must be recovered through proper means.
Thank you for the very detailed description of how to do the super charger service.
Just bought a 52 plate. As I see it’s going to be a very sought after engine in months or years to come. About to spend my weekend binge watching your other advisory videos 👍😳stay safe sir.
thank you for wonderfully detailed instructions!!
now i feel confident in tackling this job myself.
best video on RUclips!
Wouldn't it make sense to remove the water pump and inspect the gears while the supercharger is out?
That’s up to you to decide. This video‘s only for the supercharger
Definitely worth doing the waterpump while sc out. These are old cars now.
Wow if there was ever a guide on how NOT to service a Supercharger correctly it would be this one! How could you not know that the sensor that you was calling an oil pressure sensor is actually a Crank Position Sensor! And not even investigate the PTO for the water pump or even change it??? And the needless draining of the AC system and venting it to atmosphere well that’s just shocking 🤦
100% mate.
Slap dash as hell...Also if the supercharger has zero oil coming out of it, then it surely warrants further investigation...For all he knows the teeth could be worn to nothing...What about at least putting some sacrificial gear oil in there to flush out any swarf or dirt?? 'That's it...one supercharger fully serviced'...He's having a larf.
@@simonlloyd7557 this was my thought exactly all the work to totally half ass the service that should have been a repair. the sad part was he interpreted the oil leak from the crank sensor and not the super charger OMG!!!
i was about to write the same but i believe you are being a bit to harsh on him. he explained things more clearer and gave more information than others videos i seen. modmini video of the same was useless. he did mention many things that modmini left out like fan resistor failure.
but yeah absolutely no excuse for not inspecting the pto chamber on the supercharger especially as it had no oil!!!. the least he could have done is check backslash on the pto gear that drives the water pump. a good practice is to reseal the chamber using some gasket maker. also calling the crank sensor a oil pressure sensor is bound to confuse people a lot.
So having re-read my earlier statement I have to stand by it. Without the sarcastic OMG. The problem is someone paid this guy to service the car and probably paid a considerable amount and now they in a very short period of time will have to pay the same labor to have it replaced or repaired and probably at a much greater cost I feel sorry for the customer. Who probably paid for a new crank sensor or actually an oil pressure sensor and a crank sensor.
@@tabdougherty8549 yea it will be back in 6 months or a year
Best mini mechanic I've seen...great video...makes me realize i should never have bought one..ha....ohhhh welll.
If Gordon Ramsey was a mechanic.
This bloody man here
You do not need to remove the condenser or drain the Freon all you have to do is let it swing out of the way
In my opinion connecting the water pump to the supercharger is a bad design.
I would always put a new waterpump in because if the waterpump gets stuck it will kill your supercharger gearing.
Has anyone mounted an electric waterpump instead?
This video has settled my thoughts on whether or not I'm buying an 05 Mini S that needs a supercharger replacement. The car has 80k on it and the price is right but if it's this much work to remove the SC I'll pass!
You are right of course - it's a big job - but at least it's not one you need to do often. The advantage of a supercharger is it has its own oil whereas a turbo shares oil with the engine. Both have their problems. In the R56 Cooper S the Camchain guides can disintergrate and bits of plastic block the oil pump which can lead to oil starvation....
What was the right price mate? 🤔
Fantastic job
This is fantastic! Thank you.
BMW quality in plastics shows up here. Its cheaper to replace the entire drive train that replacing all those cheap quality hoses, plastic and seals
Not BMW... Chrysler...or to be more specific...GM.
Great video have you done a how to video on a headgasket on r53 cooper s
G day mate. Firstly thank you for all the videos. Very helpful and educational. In fact as a result I have been able to service my supercharger and rebuild most of my Mini Cooper s R53 engine.
I wanted to ask you for help please. I replaced my radiator fan with an after marker Topaz brand. However was disappointed that it only has one plug. The bug one. Don’t know what the small plug on the original fan is for ????
So now the fan will not turn off. Cold engine and the key is not even in the ignition it runs. I have to remove the main plug from it to stop it from running so it doesn’t drain my battery.
Any ideas. Please help.
Thank you
Regards
Edin
I am pretty sure it goes to a relay in the fusebox that controls the fan from a signal from the ECU. I don't like using aftermarket parts for this reason - however I would go back to the supplier with this one as it seems that you need an additional part or some workround.
So my 2006 mini has 122000 on it I just bought it used the supercharger is making a rattling noise with doin this fix it
Isn't what you call the oil pressure sensor actually the crank sensor??
I’m looking to get a cheap r53 05 - 06 plate cooper s. Seen one for 2.5k that is saying there is a slight noise from the SC. Unsure if I should get it after seeing this video. Really good video and an excellent job. Feeling stuck, Help 😏
Very helpful! Thank you!
This right here. Thank you!!!
I'm at 145000 miles and a mouse chewed through my knock sensor wire. Your video is integral to my next week. Parts are all ordered and I'm doing a super charger service, dare I say its first. Ty.
Welcome!
Great video, will serve me well this weekend when I do mine, thanks! That one time use clip you took off and replaced; can I ask what size clip it is so I can get one ahead of the work?
Hi. Thank you for all your videos. They are fantastic. Just wanted to ask you, you mentioned the knock sensor which I have purchased and will replace, but what is the other sensor you pointed to, and should I also replace that too?
Thank you once again!
Oil pressure sensor , is it?
clean and well-explained work but you can't as.....SUPER THANKS.
Right on man excellent video
Isn't there a seal on the flange that the water pump connects to on the block? I didn't see that being replaced. Thought I saw that on another video.
There is an o ring and it's best to replace it for sure
Thanks for sharing. What was the actual time frame
Great work man! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Great video, thank you so much for recording it😉😉
Hi how do you unclip or disconnect vacuum hose that goes to brake booster from the top next to air box?
Hi was wondering if you could give some advice. I’ve bought a Mini Cooper s and the guy I bought it from didn’t really know what he was doing so after the car wouldn’t start. I’ve got it all working again but I’m getting a hunting/surging on idle
The two pipe that go into the black part of the supercharger where do they go and what do they do as I think I’m missing one
Thanks
Also that’s the crank sensor not oil pressure
Thank you - you are of course correct. My mistake.
Dude. Really. Tipton. I’m in Great Barr. Defo coming to see you. Thanks again sir for the videos. 👍😳
It’s a bit more compact than my triumph herald under that bonnet 😂😂. Out of the frying pan and into the fire 🔥 GULP😳
Thanks for the video man that was really awesome thanks and the way you explain it is very easy to understand good job thumbs up
Glad it helped!
Mini Cooper R53 S non JCW (2003)
I have a promblem with the headlights, when i turn on the switch only the one lamb turn on. After a long time trying ( turning on, off) both of them turn on, is this a common promblem on minis? should i chance the Xenon ECU?
Well done video!
Excelent video! Thanks a lot
At 10:34 what size is the single-use clip?
Why would you do all that work and not put a new water pump in?
Waterpump side is dry seals are bad
Great video thanks!
As alawys useful & great video. 👍
Do you think it would be possible to do this service and not disturb the refrigerant in the airconditioning system?
Yes most do not drain the AC but just push the condenser aside, recommend supporting it and not letting it hang.
Fantastic
thank you very helpful...
Great video. Is is necessary to purge the A/C to remove the SC? Also how often should this be done? Thx
Willo Arn no! You don’t need to drain the ac all you have to do is move it out the way
Yes it is possible to move the AC out of the way if you support the AC rad - however when I have done this in the past I have stressed the connections and afterwards they leaked which is why I drain it. Perhaps your local garage could drain it prior and regass it for you after?
the Supercharge oil should be changed at 100,000 miles - however the car in this video had only covered 54k and there was no oil in the water pump side so go figure.
A bungee cord works great for hanging the condenser
Very good
What year is this MINI
How much would you charge for this job as iv just got a r53 and want to get this done along with full service
Prices here: www.theminispecialist.com/mini-servicing-costs/services-for-r53-mini-cooper-s-and-john-cooper-works/services-for-r53-mini-cooper-s/.
Hi , how much would something like this cost ? Apparently the engine was rebuilt at 99,900 miles. But I’m sure people would say anything t sell a car. ( I really hope I’m wrong) but assuming they did. What’s the cost of a supercharger and all the extras cost and timings ,
So a Supercharger service is £330 all in. It takes 4 to 5 hours and we have pretty good availability at the moment.
Can anybody confirm me that anyhow we can just top up Oil for some?
Great video now subscribed.
Exactly ... two 10mm nuts...
Thank you
Does it SC oil service reduce rattling noise? Or do you need to replace the SC?
If your supercharger bearings are shot then it will rattle and new oil won't change that....

Thanck u
At least it's not a clutch!
I did the clutch on mine , just put the subframe back up and since everything is still open in the front I guess I will do the oil on the supercharger before putting the front back on, What a job!!!.
The packaging and tightness of everything on this car looks absolutely dreadful to work on. I'm shocked, the labour costs of working on these must be massive. I've got a F56 that's under warranty so not too fussed about the labour but not sure I'd want to own an R56 or R53/50 out of warranty, looks a PITA.
My Alfa 147 track slag is miles easier to work on. But also a total PITA for other reasons.. So you win some you loose some.
I was thinking of buying an R53 cooper s up until i seen this video, great video, but faark that, these things look like a shitbox to work on. Il stick to a more practical Japanese cars and enjoy seeing other people drive these mini’s.
Buy one that's has this done already....
Hai man so u only add oil to the super charger . U don't take apart and inspect the insides wow crazy 😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😂😅😂
I have anxiety.
step 1. - sell it.
step 2. - buy the turbo S model.
what an idiot the next gen prince with turbo engines are riddled with issues of oil burning piston rings failing and scoring lot of issues. only an idiot would suggest the r57 cooper s over a r53 cooper s. these 1.6 supercharged engines are very reliable.
@@noneofthese94 the idiot is some no face nooob saying Cooper is a good car to begin with. anyone reading this, save your money and buy something that doesn't need to be in the shop more then once a month.
@@johnmichaellunstrumsr.7716 lmfao no face? you just in your original comment told everyone to buy a turbo cooper s. you contradict yourself with every statement. you would find even a simple oil change intimidating lol. best thing for you is a cycle. what a clown
Absolutely no reason to drain A/C! Just pull compressor and condenser off and set aside. If you did have to drain A/C and refill, this "how to video" is pretty useless, as almost nobody has proper equipment at home to drain, store and refrill compressor!
I get my Mini pretty high on jackstands and blocks so I set A/C compressor on a box to not strain A/C lines.
you DO NOT discharge the AC to do supercharger service! you also DO NOT disconnect the AC condenser. that is asking for issues later. this is a Terrible Mechanic.
Car engineers suck 😂they hate mechanics.
