    I'll post any updates and FAQ here! So the Monitor is back-lit, I'm not sure how I messed this up, it's written on the box. The monitor has scaling options, so for low resolutions you can fill the entire screen, keep the aspect ratio, but also have 1:1 pixel mapping which is nice. It does take a bit long to detect a new signal when you turn on your PC.

      I wanna buy exactly same monitor, but only 30 hz at 10 bit 444 dp? Benq pdf from their website state support uhd monitors 4k 444 10 bit 60 hz input for displayport, and no support 60 hz for hdmi. However, other table shows 60 hz available through 'pc timing' and not available through 'video timing'.
      Could it be cable/drivers related issue in your case?

    From what I know about the Freesync Low Framerate Compression is that you should be able to bring down the Freesync Range using CRU to around 30Fps, which then enables it.
    It's a shame that many manufacturers actually have panels that support a Freesync Range this low, but it has to be done manually. My Dell Monitor (Only 1080p) works fine like this, but otherwise I'm stuck with a similar 40-75Fps Range for Freesync.
    I've been seeing a lot about this Benq Monitor so cheers for the very in-depth review... Hopefully I can find a cheap one used eventually and then i may end up with one.

      Thanks, that gives me something to try out :) I did quite a bit of online searching, but you know that often goes with lots of dead-ends. AFAIK the max range must be 2.5x of the min range for LFC to work, so with a 60 Hz panel that makes it difficult. I will try it out with my next project, the monitor is now deployed in my lab :D

      I have a 144hz panel that supports Freesync up to 90 hz.
      I find it is the best of both worlds, I use 144hz when I can maintain a very high framerate, otherwise I drop it to 90hz and enable freesync. You should cap the framerate to 1 frame less than your refresh rate, otherwise it may cause issues, like flickering(depending on manufacturer).

    About the small text issue, i think its really with the resolution X monitor size. This seemed to work well with both windows and linux.
    I made a rule to define the "ideal" resolution of a monitor for reading text (for people who dont have any vision problems), and its like that:
    The first digits of the resolution define the size of monitor in inches:
    1920x1080 (19, so between 18 to 20 inches is ideal, smaller the text starts to get small, and if larger than 21, things start to look less sharp).
    1366x768 (13, so from 12 to 14 inches is ideal, 15 it starts to loose sharpness, and lower it becomes too small)
    So a 15inch laptop would have the ideal resolution at around 1600x900. A 4k monitor should be something like a 40 inches television.
    I could be wrong or this be too based on my personal taste, but everybody i asked seemed to agree after some tests, and for example showing my 1080p 13inch zenbook prime Ux31a wich is awfull to read stuff, then showing my 768p 15.6 inch dell 15r 5537 wich look bad and really stretched out, not sharp..

    Just got this monitor, absolutely stunned by it, I have to admit I was very sceptical buying a name like BenQ, but wow, im so glad I did, one thing I did pick up on was, it was running at 59hz out of the box, and like you said it wouldnt do 10bit colours at 4:4:4 format, however, if you go into your display settings and change it to 60hz, it will do 10bit at 4:4:4, via display port and one of the HDMI ports too, you can also change the freesync range using CRU software, free download.

I am looking for a 4k monitor for Unity, blender, and perhaps Photoshop. I already have an IPS screen that I can use for colour correction in a dual-screen set-up, I am looking for screen real estate...How are the greyscales on this monitor?

  • @UpLateGeek
    @UpLateGeek 6 лет назад +1

    I've got a 31.5" 2.5K IPS (16:10) screen, and an expensive one at that, and the black level/contrast are definitely a noticeable downside. On the plus side, I went from a 10 year old 24" 2K IPS (also 16:10) screen with CFL backlight to this and was blown away at the difference. The tube was definitely wearing out, so colour rendition and brightness were definitely suffering. And I was glad the higher pixel density didn't make text and stuff annoyingly small - to get a similar PPI on a 4K screen, you'd need a 46" panel, which would way too huge for most people (although a friend does use a 55" 4K TV as his main monitor, but he's really old and has both driving and reading glasses, so I guess he has an excuse... kinda).

    Hey man great review! I'm planning to buy this monitor and this will be an upgrade for me from 1080p so can you clear a few of my doubts?
    Q1) Can I use this monitor with a GTX 1050ti. I know sounds dumb but I don't primarily plan to use it for gaming. It's mainly for graphic designing and some video editing. So since Photoshop and Premiere mainly rely on CPU and not GPU, will I face any problems running it on my GTX 1050ti?
    Q2) I don't plan to game a lot but I may use it sometimes for gaming. So I was wondering if I can set the resolution of games to 1080p and fullscreen because my gpu can handle 1080p. Can you try this setting on a few games on your monitor and let me know if the games look normal or is there some kind of blur due to downscaling or 1080p on 32 inch screen...if there's any issue do let me know if it looks decent or just unplayable.
    That would be it. I would really really appreciate it if you could answer my questions. Thank you :)

    The lack of consistent display scaling (also an issue in Linux) is a major reason why I probably won't get a 4K monitor for quite some time. It sort of amazes me actually that Microsoft hasn't fixed it yet given how obviously bad it is.
    Of course the other part is simply that I'm very cheap and can't imagine spending over ~$150 for any monitor and wouldn't buy it exclusively for entertainment. Also the space I have available really limits the display to the 17"-20" range. Thankfully, ebay and Amazon both sell used 17" monitors, and you're likely to find someone locally who just recently upgraded and is willing to part with it for $5-$20.

      I have a ryzen 1700x with 2 gtx 1080s, 16gb 3200 ram, on an x370 board hooked to a 55" 4k60 tv. The computer uses 400-670 watts when gaming, and there are still a lot of games I own (~30%, mostly newer fps games) that are better played scaled back to 1440p with higher texture detail. If you want to get the best performance in games at 4k, you have to leave windows scaling at 100%. It is impossible to read anything, and the taskbar becomes a 1/2" stripe at the bottom of the screen lol. Unless you have something like 1080ti cards in sli, or a new rtx 2080ti, reliable 4k gaming is unachievable. Even at that, win10 scaling sucks ass, and microsoft needs to fix their shit if they want to stay relevant. My rig is very respectable, but even then... Decent, reliable, affordable 4k60 is still a ways away.

    I have an LG ultrawide Freesync monitor, 2560x1080 with a Freesync range of 48Hz to 75Hz and an RX480. I do wish I had gotten a 2k monitor but they were too expensive at the time. The biggest advantage would be having DOSBox running in a window at perfect aspect ratio. (You should do a video and show that off with the Sound Canvas emulator off to the side). My ultrawide is on a monitor arm that I slide out of the way to access my 1600x1200 monitor for DOSBox or retro DOS/Win9x gaming because it has a VGA port and my ultrawide does not. Freesync works great for me. I can run Rise of the Tomb Raider at ultra with the shadow quality one tick lower from the top and even though it dips below 60FPS and floats around mid-50s, you would never know it thanks to Freesync.

    I'm very happy with my BenQ monitor - - a XL2730, 1440p -- which is ideal for retro-game scaling and resolutions; the one I wrote a review for on Vogons. It was only about 100$ cheaper than this 4K one when I purchased it a few years ago. I'm surprised that some of the great features like the S-Switch"Puck/Scroll Wheel" for navigating the OSD and creating macros. Also the XL2730 has a very flexible stand with tilt AND height adjustment -- I expected to see this on a premium 4K monitor.

    I'm under the impression that this monitor is made more for content creators than gamers really, but why BenQ put freesync in it makes this product a little confusing. How accurate are the aRGB and sRGB calibration out of the box? 5 ms response time is good tho, but the freesync range really blows 😓 if a panel is made for media consumption and content creation, film filmed in 25 FPS is the norm so that should be the lowest frame rate of the monitor and the lowest target for freesync IMO

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 лет назад

      I can address the issue with watching movies, which often are 23.xx or 24 FPS, but PAL stuff can be 30 FPS or even 50. What I do is simply set this refresh rate in Windows. That gives you smooth video. AFAIK I don't know if media players can even work with FreeSync. The 50 Hz FreeSync support does come in handy with PAL Emulators, like an Amiga for example. With the colors, I can only refer to the reviews I read, and the consensus is that only small tweaks are required if you calibrate it with a professional device.

    Half Live 2 at 4K with a RX 579? What about Forza 4? No way can that card play that game at 4K with decent frame rates.

      I'm able to run Forza 4 with Ultra settings - average of 46 FPS on my RX480, here is a benchmark result: imgur.com/a/HUKUXm6
      So yes you can play modern games with decent enough framerate. :)
