I loved it personally. I didn’t get any of the tasting notes you did. Would it be better at a higher proof and age? Of course. You could say that about almost all ryes. I think most whisky tubers are proof hounds. I prefer higher proofs but not at the dismay of lower proofs. This EC Toasted Rye isn’t going to blind well against higher proof ryes but it is still very good.
Ok now I’m going to give this a shot. And I agree about proof. I started with bourbon & was the same way. Other categories in whisky have an opposite approach of doing more with less or just being more drinkable.
I don’t think the “proof hound” label really fits Cam. He really liked Bulleit’s 12 year rye, that is a low proofer, along with his love for Mitcher’s 10 that’s also lower proof, and not to mention the scotches he drinks and enjoys. Now I could see the argument that he’s bias against double oaked and toasted finished whiskeys and that the majority of them will get a bad review from him. Or that he typically is going to review a higher aged product more favorably than a lower aged product, since he’s a sucker for a well aged oaky flavor profile. But I feel when it comes to proof, that’s one of the smaller factors that comes into play for him, unless the product is too thin and watery from being proofed down too much that he makes the product worse than it could be.
Toasted/DO Ryes are my favorite whiskies. I think for the price I’ll just stick with Sagamore DO Rye. I’ll wait for this to hit the bars to give it a go.
Kind of a shame, I was excited for this. The base offering rye by EC is my fave from the distillery. (I am a Rye guy)
That’s really disappointing. Thought it would be better than the TB because of the spicy & sweet elements coming together. Bummer.
I don’t like their toasted bourbon (haven’t tried a recent batch tho) but really liked this toasted rye. I got it at EW as well. I wish it had more proof on it but that was my only real complaint
Sounds like I should stick with my Peerless DO Rye. Love it.
Oh yeah, that one absolutely smacks this, although the prices are vastly different
I hated the toasted bourbon a could years ago haven’t felt the need to get another but I feared the rye would be trash too. Now they are doing barrel proof toasted bourbons as picks now starting in 2024 I’m intrigued there
I’m definitely intrigued about the BP toasted. I think this rye has potential with future batches, and probably tons of potential at barrel proof, but this first version totally missed
Skip this just go buy Pikesville rye
Agree
Sounds like a pass for me just like the bourbon. Solid Review.
Crap. I found a ton of these locally, the last two weeks. MA, grabbed one on Friday and it’s great. Drinks great for 94p, which was disappointing to see but it does have some building heat which makes up for it.
Really enjoy the ECTR. Not great on the nose, but the pallet is above average.
Great Review, I agree with on a few of notes and particularly about them proofing it down with too much water. Check out my review I released on it yesterday. And let me know what you think. Old whiskey club but new channel and can use all the support I can get.
After drinking in the Circle of Death with you and Kenny at Pours ....I don't ever think I'll ever have Heaven Hill like that again ever Bless ups Cam great review
Makes me appreciate producers who 'proof to taste', rather than setting the proof to a pre-determined alcohol content. Put some effort/expertise into it, even if mass produced
I picked up a bottle last weekend, and was disappointed when I tasted it. But that might be because I picked up a bottle of Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye at the same time, so I couldn’t help comparing it to the outstanding Michter’s.
You can't compare this to a bottle that sells for 6 times the price
These bottles are all over virginia
Thanks for saving me $$$.
This was my most excited-to-try bottle of the year and your review honestly makes me skeptical if I might even like it. I love the regular EC toasted.
As always, definitely try for yourself since the price point doesn’t make it too much of a gamble. There are some things I like and many I don’t as far as profile, but the real kicker is the short palate and finish. I’ll revisit later but pretty confident that at the very least, it’s not for me. Cheers 🥃
I suppose I’ll stick with ASW fiddler toasted rye. Thanks for the review as always!
Surprised you liked the bourbon! Always skipped it as not loving double Oakes or toasted products but will have to give it a t try!
Could just be when compared to the rye haha. Gotta taste it independently to see if it still holds up 😅
The bourbon is ass now. The newest batches aren't as good as the old ones.
Sounds like we are flipped on this! The toasted bourbon was pretty divisive so I’d imagine this rye will be too.
Could you please leave in the notes time markers for the: nose, pallet and finish? Simple whiskey, wordy descriptions. Thank you for your hard work!
This is shame. Was really hoping it would compete with Michter's toasted barrel rye.
The nose faintly reminded me of a heavily bourbon barrel-aged gin that I have. Not in a bad way, but just different. It's herbal in a way that isn't usual when thinking about ryes.
I didn't get any dill or raw lumber or corny notes, though I agree it was thinned out too much.
One of the weirdest reviews I’ve ever heard.
Sorry about that lol
@@DrumsAndDrams Sorry about my comment (seriously). It's not helpful and I hate when other people comment the way I did. I didn't explain why I thought it was "weird." And I used hyperbolic language (i.e., "ever").
@@DrumsAndDrams Your review isn't weird. In fact, after going back and watching again, its very in depth. I think my initial reaction was due to the fact that you were so descriptive of the layers or tasting notes and then ended up not liking it ("an absolute no"). Overall, its a good, honest review based on your palate. I appreciate your videos, attention to detail, and your production quality (audio and video). Keep up the good work. I'll do better with comments in the future.
Very strong product. Toasted Rye works so well.
I have no idea what you tasted but this is by far the best new whiskey I have tasted this year. Good balance of sweetness and rye spice, and just the right amount of oak. First time I've watched one of your videos, looking like it'll be the last.
@@marcmiller1337 life would be boring if we agreed all the time wouldn’t it? I think this will be a bottle with severely divided opinions, much more of a subjective preference issue than some other bottles. Anyways, if it’s the last, thanks for watching. Cheers 🥃
I like this much more than the toasted bourbon. At cask strength it would be special and compete with the Michter's toasted. I paid 45 bucks for it, and that is fine for the price.
@@NathanielEssex I agree that the price for this is great, and it shows me that it’s not intended to be some super premium LE kind of product. Even if someone likes the profile more than I did though, I just have a hard time with how flat it drinks and how short the finish is.
I bought and tried and did not like it at all...
I’m curious how new your toasted barrel is? I bought mine within the last year and it doesn’t do it for me. Wasn’t planning to buy another whenever I finish it, so hearing you say the toasted bourbon has gotten much better has me curious
@@epegr1075 I bought it about 3 weeks ago, although it could just be that it did really well in this video compared to the rye, which honestly wouldn’t be hard to outshine..
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
Where is the Scotch content???? Don’t tell me Chrissy scared you off of Scotch videos. And stop trying to make rye happen
Rye is dead. Long live Lagavulin Offerman Rum Finish
🤮
Maybe it’s a bad batch…
