I really like your recording of the interior engine noise. Those binaurals are nice. You are one of the few reviewers than know how to balance the audio vs voice. Many guys declare the engine sound great only to bury it underneath their voice. You've got it right.

Just test drive it before you judge.. And yes you are right, it has a lot of options, like a lot of Porsches do that increases the price a lot.. Buying a "base" Porsche with 0 options is bassically non-existing, almost everything is an option on these cars (which can be seen as bad but also good if you want a "bare" sportscar without unnecessary luxury you can get it)..

I’ve been now 15 months into ownership of a GT silver Style Ed. Porsche and it’s a great car to own. It’s my daily and I have driven 27K km so far (17K miles for UK/US readers). The only grime is that 95% of the time I’m not using its full potential. The engine is what it is: a four pot boxer. But in isolation it’s all the sports car you need. (And I’ve driven a BMW M3 before deciding…)
People lament that the 718 has a Boxer 4-cylinder but I disagree. A Boxer-4 is very much in the Porsche tradition... 356, 912, 550 Spyder... Of course a Flat-6 is better but a Boxer 4 is cool too.
At this point people have to decide if they want to grab an old school car before it's too late. I decided to grab one of these over the weekend - love it. I understand it doesn't have that flat 6 wail, which I have experienced, and it's a little underpowered etc but it's raw and a blast to drive.
This is all you need, the 0-60 is more like 4.2 seconds than the 4.7 the factory quotes although I wouldn't subject the PDK to too many of those race starts. This is also a couple hundred pounds lighter than the big six. I have two 986 and one 987 Boxsters, one day I hope to add a 718. Enjoyed the video.
It's all you need for sure.. But it's not all people want (mainly sound) and it still lacks a bit of status.. That's also why the 911 still sells a lot better while objectively the 718 is the better sportscar.. Nobody needs more than a 718 GTS 4.0 really..
I'd still take the Type R with a manual. Can't justify spending $78,000 for the same amount of power. Your just paying for the brand, not the experience.
From a driving experience the lower tier boxter/cayman are awesome. Rather drive these, than deal with envious crazies on the road chasing your 911 down

Yes yes, I love the white wheels with the darker blue. Usually not a fan of graphics but being minimal as this, it works for me. But man she's a loud idler, I mean it's no banshee GT4 but in sport it's decent sound for a 4cyl, at least when she's topless. I would definitely go for an AM exhaust. Well optioned for the price, doesn't seem to skip out on too much being "entry" level. How's the gearing, I've heard that's shorter & fixed now. I can understand, as a whole, missing that little bit of "umph"...

No matter how you dice it, I suspect the depreciation on these will be quite severe simply because it is missing 2 cylinders. The sound isn’t bad, but it’s missing the soul of what made these cars so addictive to drive. I have a 6-cylinder GTS so am obviously bias but having test drove the base 718 and S variant, I just couldn’t part with that much money for something that doesn’t arouse the same emotions as Porsches ‘ of yesteryear.
This or the 3.5L is the perfect street car IMHO.... Esp with aftermarket simple tuning... The PDK effectively raises the performance by being in the powerband all the time...

I daily a 981 Cayman. 100% will not upgrade to the updated 718 generation with the flat 4. Sure my car is slower, albeit not by much. But that sound alone makes the 981 generation so special. Now the 718 GTS 4.0 with the flat 6 would be tempting...
I prefer the sound of my 4.0 but these motors are really impressive. The manual 2.0 turbo 718 accelerates exactly as hard as an Emira V6 from 100-200 kmh and 0-150 mph. Very stout little engines. And if Subarus didn’t exist they wouldn’t catch anywhere near as much flak.
funny story, i never saw a PDK 718 boxster or cayman , base or S, has PTV in it. I am actively searching for a 718 with adaptive cruise control + PTV, yet I never see one !
Not to say you're wrong or anything, but... having owned a G20 and having driven a Boxster, they couldn't be more different. The 3er is going to be way more practical, but I mean, the way I felt when driving the Boxster is pretty much unique to that car. It feels so small and precise to drive, in every way. The 3er is... precise, yes, but in a more distant, artificial way. The Boxster feels more real, more analog. And I like feeling the outside world a little - the drop-top Boxster gives me that. The Corvette - 100% could see the argument for it. It is, on paper, a lot "more car" than the Boxster for similar money and gives some of those same feelings - though I still think the Boxster feels lighter on its feet.

I love the Boxster but prefer the Miata because I’m poor! $80,000 before taxes is ridiculously expensive for a four cylinder 2 seat roadster. A Miata is also a roadster BUT is half the price and just as much or more fun to drive. The Boxster is roomier and more luxurious and certainly more comfortable too. But if you’re not rich than get a Miata instead. You’ll have just as much fun. Miata is easier to fix and live with because it’s AFFORDABLE! REMEMBER THE MIATA IS ABOUT 500 lbs less and more nimble because it’s so light. The Boxster feels like a tank compared to the lightweight Miata. I’ve owned both cars and actually find the Miata more fun to live with on a long term basis. That’s probably partially because I was more stressed about repairs. The Miata is very reliable and cheap to fix. Buying a used Boxster has become harder to afford unless you get one 10 years old and than it’s out of warranty and lots of money to maintain.

So, even as an IS 500 owner and obviously a bit of a snob about the fact that my car has a V-8, I can still appreciate a Boxster or Cayman. I think the flat-four sounds cool, and it isn't just a cookie-cutter inline-four turbo like other brands would've used. Porsche stuck with a flat-four engine like they have had in cars throughout their history - in fact, the very 718 after which this model is named was powered by a flat-four. Not only that, but you have to realize you're paying for the whole car, not the engine or acceleration alone. A lot of people fall into this trap online - I see it a lot with my IS 500. "$70k just to get gapped by a tuned Golf R?" Yeah, and I don't care. I didn't buy it for outright speed. I bought it for the interior and the quality and the aesthetics, too. Much like the Boxster - I've driven a 981 Boxster (the S, specifically), and found that the straight-line speed was... good, but not impressive or anything. The sensation of using the engine and having it respond to my requests, though - really on-point. And, the handling and steering were just sublime. Not to mention, the car just felt solid. It felt like a quality item. You don't get that at a lower price point - I'm sorry, you just don't. This is not to say that the Boxster is appropriately priced, all things considered. This car is expensive. No doubt about that.
@@ARentz07 I agree with your assessment, but why spend $100k on a base boxster with 280 hp when you can spend $100k on a still well equipped boxster S with 350 hp. Nothing against Porsche, I love the brand, my uncle has owned a couple, but their pricing has gotten out of hand these days for the base (non-S/GTS/turbo) models. A base macan can be spec’d to $90k. A base Cayenne can be spec’d to $115k+

First turbo car I’ve owned which revs to 7500RPM….with the Kline catless DP it certainly sounds good.
Exactly... 4 liter great for the track... for street. this is the perfect car. Lower running costs makes it better for roadtripping as well.

I faced similar decision and picked up a manual 718 for Pennie’s more than a loaded club ND3.

Just get a WRX. 35k with a quick tune and its the same power in AWD. Way better deal.

The sensation of using the engine and having it respond to my requests, though - really on-point. And, the handling and steering were just sublime. Not to mention, the car just felt solid. It felt like a quality item. You don't get that at a lower price point - I'm sorry, you just don't.
This is not to say that the Boxster is appropriately priced, all things considered. This car is expensive. No doubt about that.
@@ARentz07 I agree with your assessment, but why spend $100k on a base boxster with 280 hp when you can spend $100k on a still well equipped boxster S with 350 hp. Nothing against Porsche, I love the brand, my uncle has owned a couple, but their pricing has gotten out of hand these days for the base (non-S/GTS/turbo) models. A base macan can be spec’d to $90k. A base Cayenne can be spec’d to $115k+
@jakes5530 I'm just going to get a GTS 4.0 if I'm in for over $100k anyways.
I'm sure Porsche's flat four turbo is way more trustworthy than other brands (looking at you Subaru), but it sounds awful.
Kline has some nice pipes which amplify an angry 4-cyl sound…reminds me of my buddies akropovic RSV4….just an angry and powerful sound.
