Thank you! Transitioning from forward backwards has been a road block in my skating journey. You explained it so clearly to and I was able to finally get it! Thanks for being such a great teacher :)
Thank you so much! 🌹 I can skate, but didn't know how to turn. This is great instruction on how to do it! Straight and to the point and not 35 min on how to do it.
Thank Katie. I fell tonight coming out of my driveway and my bubble wrap shorts saved my hip but my elbow is a mess. My elbow pad was not positioned where it should of been. It twisted itself to the crook of my elbow, 0 protection. Guys make sure your pads are where they should be. This is of the utmost importance. This will never deter me from skating.
It's interesting, if you watch the three turns Katie does at the end of the video there's none of that weird leg at 180 degrees opposite thing. Especially in the forward to backward spin. She just does a very slight hop on her dominant foot and swings the other around directly in line with it. That seems like a much more viable and comfortable turning method.. maybe the way everyone teaches it is not that great? Most moves seem better swift and fluid and break down when you try to explain them slowly or step-by-step since there aren't discrete steps in reality.
Love that you noticed these. They are three turns. They are executed on one foot so slightly more of an advanced step but I can absolutely demo these too. These are much easier on a rink as the foot will slide. As you say, when I’m outside it becomes a slight hop as my wheels won’t glide on such a rough surface. Great spot and an idea for another video. Thank you x
Thank you for saying that backwards to forwards is trickier! I’m really struggling with making it look smooth (I’m doing that hop thing you did 🤣) and everyone tells me it easier than forwards to backward which I’ve unlocked! So glad to have found your channel! X
It’s definitely tricker as it requires lots of one foot balancing. You’ll get it. Sounds like you know what you need to do with a bit more practice it will come. Enjoy your journey xx 🛼
@@revolutionsquared1 maybe it’s the shoulders? Take note of your shoulder movements when going backwards to forwards and see if you can do the same going forwards to backwards?
These tips really helped omg. I realized I wasn’t lifting up my back wheels slightly while turning in the position. First time practicing this, I’m turning like an amateur now. Problem solved. 😂 Thanks a lot ❤
Thanks for these tips for turning backwards from forward. Much appreciated, having had problems with the "spread-eagle" position! I am an artistic skater, so your tips will make this much more enjoyable!!!
No knock on your video. Good video but this is something you can’t watch a video on and do, I watched videos for weeks and weeks and nothing worked. My advice to you is to keep trying to do it the best way you can my transitions doesn’t look like everyone else’s but it gets the job done. And when you learn it then you can add your own sauce to it
Thanks so much for this, I had a few tumbles yesterday from transitions and now i know what i deffo need to work on (i also got some good falling practice in lol and my pads saved me multiple times). Also it's mad how different surfaces feel which sounds stupid i know but all the slight bumps in the ground. I've only been skating for less than a month so I'm trying to go easy on myself and slow down 😅
Super helpful explanations! I just have one request, I wish the moving demo wasn't edited with a cut in the middle of the transition and a 180-degree shift of perspective, it's a little disorienting and hard to keep track of which foot is which. It would be nice to have an unedited shot of each transition, and maybe even in slow motion. :)
Thank you. That’s a very good point. Thank you for mentioning it. I’ve told off hubby (the editor) and he says “sorry, he won’t do it again”. 😉 😂 We’ll be aware of it for future vids. Thank you xx 💕💕
I’m still perfecting skating backwards especially around curves but transitioning from backwards to forwards I naturally got asap. I’m struggling forwards to backwards 😅
Going backward to forward is so natural feeling.. but forward to backward requires a lot of intentional movement to get that foot all the way 180 degrees. 😅
I’m almost there. I practice today near a wall at the rink… but I keep looking down and I have issues turning the second foot. But it’s ok. I’m still beginner, I lol be patient
@@Skatie thanks but... Meh... 😂... My husband came for the first time at the rink with me and recorded me. I still had baby Bambi legs (warm up) and didn't look as awkward as i thought, so i think that helped me in my "I'm not progressing and I'm upset" kinda mood, the recording helped, I'll try doing more. I don't progress as fast as i want. But i try to put in my head that ok if I'm slow, as long as I'm getting better. Heck, in one session this week i even went on a rougher concrete path and rolled over few cracks! But o really want those transition down to be able to stop backwards before i do anything else
Hi. Thank you. These are some really Old figure skates. The boot is Risport Cristallo on an Atlas plate and Britney Spears wheels! None of which I think are currently available it’s all so old. A similar modern setup would be Risport boots on a roll-line plate and soft outside wheels 60mm 78A
The fact you said backwards to forwards is trickier but I “accidentally “ mastered that in just a few hours. But a week later im still struggling to smoothly skate forward to backwards
Thanks. I vounteer at a skating club and this is so difficult to teach children who cannot do the open hip / spread eagle type position. Do you have any tips to help?
It can be done in a tighter V position if a skater cannot turn their hips out too far. Also if it’s done by lifting the feet more then the open hip position becomes less pronounced. But it can be slightly trickier like that.
So I just realized that during front to back transitions I spin on my heels instead of my toes. That has been working fine for me. Do you think that is a bad habit I should break?
If it’s working for you I say continue. I only don’t teach it that way as turning on your heels requires a straighter knee and I’m all about the knee bend! 😂
My feet don’t turn out….. I have a think where my feet turn straight in toe toe. I can’t turn them out heel to heel I’ve been trying for weeks. I have had this since a kid. Is there another way to turn forward to back? My foot goes about 45 degrees when I try. I I’ve dead stopped many times now
It's 2023 and this is the VIDEO I need...just getting back into skating...
Have fun x

Hopefully I do get them- lol
Fantastic. Have you decided which skates yet?
Thank you! It's so funny the fact that I can do it perfectly with my dominant leg but I can't for the life of me with the other lol
Yup. It’s so frustrating. One side just doesn’t seem attached to my brain some days! 😂 🦵⭐️💕🛼
@@Skatie lmaoo exactly!!
I’ve had a hip replacement so I can’t get that 180 degree opening. What else can I do?
You can do it at less of an angle it just makes a tighter circle, more like a mini spin to turn.
What if I’m unable to open my hips enough to point my toes opposite each other?
You can do it in a more acute v angle it just means the turn will be sharper. It’s not a very natural position.
So I just realized that during front to back transitions I spin on my heels instead of my toes. That has been working fine for me. Do you think that is a bad habit I should break?

I have a transitions 2 video which has lots more options. You may find a different way much easier. The heel heel is a very awkward position
Wait Wait Wait..... what was that move you were doing at the end????? Do you have a tutorial on that?????

@@Skatie wasn’t expecting a reply woah. I just wanted to put a timestamp for myself so I could see the footwork of a backwards transition
So you don't bring your free foot to the instep as in a figure mohawk turn, forward to backward.
You can bring it to the instep if you prefer, that’s another version of this one but as it’s more difficult I don’t show that.
@@Skatie o.k. that sounds good to me. Anything that's easier. This is so much more skater friendly than figures
