I love her teaching style. Its very helpful to know that youre not “lifting your heel” youre “pressing your toes” and that youre not bending knees but rather shifting your weight over your hips
Im re-learning after over 20 years off skates...your videos have given me so much courage! I love that you make it a whole-body lesson...it’s so much easier when I understand the dynamics! Thank you so much for helping to bring this joy back into my life!

Hi Debbie, I'm 39 and in the UK. All my life been telling myself I'm not built for skating or such things as I'm very tall and unstable. Hey Double D✔️ Excellent video. I grew up in the Roller Rinks of the South. Approximately 20 hours per week for 11-12 years. I was randomly roller skating one day and just decided “hey! Let’s try to turn around!” Of course that didn’t work and I ended up falling. But ever since that day I’ve been working on skating backwards. It randomly came to me one day, “am I even doing this right?” This video was a helping guide for me to see if I taught myself right. Turns out I have been! Thank you so much for this. I’ll be referring back to this video when some random kid in the skating rink asks me to teach them how to turn. ❤
This is the reason why I just need to search your videos instead of a regular RUclips search. I’m busting my ass this whole session lifting my skate off the ground when you’re saying not to lift the whole foot but lift the heel. I’ve been picking up my foot and I’m clearly not ready for that type of transition yet.
That is an absolutely wonderful explanation. Understanding the mechanics will really help to make the turn you want. I was afraid my knee caps would go out on me so I did it any way I could. Thank you for that explanation!
Try to think of the turn as linear. You do not need to open up as much as you need to get the lead foot behind you and follow with the other. Think as if you are in a very tight hallway.
Literally went to my first lesson with a derby team today after exercising off skates and practising swizzles (in my kitchen) like you recommended a while ago. Also got my own skates which made A HUGE difference. So happy and nailed my transitions. Slowly working towards 27/5 (got 14 today which is a huge improvement considering I couldn't stand a few weeks ago). Point is... THANK YOU.

Yesterday after watching this was the first day it clicked for me and I actually was able to do this turn! So thank you thank you!!! Very good instructions
this by far is the best video that breaks down the mechanics of transitioning. i found when i thought of compressing the top of my skate and holding my hands out as a guide line to turn my head i got it immediately!

I just recently purchased new skates. I used to go skating EVERY Sunday-& I haven’t been skating in over 20 years now. I have a long carport at my home that I’ve been using to get reacquainted. Dirty Deb, your instruction is excellent. Very clear, detailed, technical. A lot of us actually like that type of instruction - because if we pay attention and practice, we can then explain it to our kids and friends. I would generally recommend your instruction for inline skaters, too, so long as they take into account the differences between quads and inlines. (Even the toe stop isn't a huge issue when you have artistic inline skates, which likewise have some sort of stopper in the front. ; ) In our inline community, it's been tougher on average finding detailed, technical videos tutorials like this. Inline skating instructor Asha Kirby of Skatefresh teaches like you do; but she has to charge for most of her content, because that's probably her main or sole livelihood. I can respect that. When I have the money, I do what I can to support folks like you and her. = )
Thank you so much for this comment. I struggle with my videos every time I make them because I know that I will go long to explain the details. I lose viewers because they tend to only be able to focus for 5 minutes. I think I would be doing a disservice if I rushed to explain it all in less than 5. Alas I remain committed to the full video.
