Great footage Gerry. History in the making.....seems so long ago now! I remember my first trip from Dublin to Belfast in 1978, hauled by 102 which was still in the original maroon and yellow livery at the time.

Came for the Hunslets, stayed for the Met-vicks. Fantastic footage!

It was not the only time a pair of 111s worked. 111 + 112 worked the ITG Yankee Explorer which took a pair of 121s to Derry / Londonderry. The Yankee Explorer also had 208 + 209 in multiple. 102 also worked from Great Victoria Street to Belfast Central.

Great footage of Hunslet action. What I find bizarre is that the Hunslets seemed to have struggled in performance yet the Portuguese 1400 class locos with the same engine and bogies are very reliable locos with a couple of these being exported to Argentina.

@davidchambers7508. Although fitted with the same engine, the NIR 101 weighs 68 tons, compared to the CP 1400 of under 61 tons. The Portuguese loco only has a top speed.of 65 mph, whereas the NIR loco was 80 mph in their heyday. Maybe the NIR loco was regeared for the high speed, this would result in slower acceleration at the lower speeds.

2:25 there’s (at least) a couple of these sitting at Yorkgate in Belfast still. I wonder what they use them for.
16:40 I’ve always thought the two lights with the handle below looks like a little smile, thus making them a rather benign looking loco. But then I think all diesel locos have faces/expressions.

They had a relaxed attitude to people standing in the middle of the track taking photos then!

They sure had a relaxed attitude then and no one was hurt or injured everyone had a great day out.

The reopening of the Western Rail Corridor and disused railway lines in the midlands would have easier train access between the West to North and vice versa of course or even connecting the midlands with the North.

Thanks for uploading, there is not much footage of this class on youtube.
Were the Hunslets a sort of double ended class 20's?, I ask because of the distinctive EE V8 sound and the similarity of the bogies.

I looked in wikipedia, that tels me its indeed a EE CSVT8 engine, but the mk2 version with more horsepower (1350), the bogies were constructed by Hunslet to EE design, there was a very similar locomotive design for Malaysia, but on narrow gauge with Co-Co wheel arangement.

The same engine was used in the Portuguese Class 1400.

Great memories! I was on that trip and I think I noticed myself filming the loco running around at Londonderry/Derry but from the other side of the tracks.
