This might be one of my favorite Bleach videos on youtube, damn.
Also I've always thought that Kubo did the OPPOSITE of shafting Toshiro in TYBW with all those damn forms Kubo gave him. Hollowfied Bankai, Quincy Zombie, Adult form, thats just the way Kubo shows his love. Notice how pretty much every character who had already revealed their final power in the past got an additional power-up. (compared to characters who simply hadn't shown their bankai/ final power) But Toshiro got SEVERAL new forms.

You are spot on with the chain stuff btw. If you notice in the final part the chain breaks off along with the scabbard and ina QnA Kubo reveals that the revealed blade is the actual Zangetsu as for the twist that was planned since the day we met Old Man Z, if you notice the name itself is blotched out similarly to hoy Ichibes name abilities the name Yhwach was originally barred by Ichibe, and well Old man Z originally introduces himself as Yhwach but probably notices the name cannot be said nor heard which is why he then has Ichigo awaken Zangetsu himself. Kubo does confirm all of this ina QnA on Klub Outside I believe it was. But yeah no that twist 100% was always meant to be there, in fact I am confident in saying that Ichigo's linage was always planned and so was Yhwach as the final villain

  • @Hey-Its-Dingo

Since you never actually mentioned it: I love the fact that Ywach is LITERALLY just "What if Jesus was a villain?" lmao

Soul Society & Hueco Mundo : Kubo's Perfect Narrative Inversion
One of the most common criticism Bleach has received during it's run is that both the Soul Society arc and Hueco Mundo arc are one and the same. I would say the similarities on the surface are very much intentional as the themes portrayed in them differ, taking the characters to a conclusion completely opposite side to that of the SS arc.
The underlying theme of both of these arcs is very different from the one another. The Soul Society arc is mainly about questioning a flawed system and their sense of Justice, gaining powers and changing their view. Where as the Hueco Mundo arc has "understanding one's self" ,the struggle with one's inner demon and coming to realize the consequences of failing to control them while also accepting those demons(The latter comes into the narrative during the Fake Karakura Town arc but since it's connected I thought it should be mentioned).
Human reasoning plays a pivotal part in the conflict associated with the Soul Society arc where as the animal instinct within oneself is an important aspect when it comes to the Hueco Mundo arc, the conflict with one's inner demon is based on them(White's speech to Ichigo during the Vizord training)
To have the characters in these two arcs play along these themes, Kubo differenciates the espadas from the shinigami since their origins by associating them with different animals/insects. Like Grimmjow with Panther, Harribel with Shark, Nnoitora with Mantis, Nel as horse/goat, Ulquiorra with a mixture of Bat and mammel(since his resurrection also has a tail), Stark's ceros being in the forms of wolves and so on.
Where as in the Soul Society arc, the powers of the Shinigami have a certain grace to them and they are very much in line with the human ego rather than the animal insticts represented in the resurrection forms of the espada. Byakuya's bankai is sakura flowers representing beauty but also the fact that people are buried under the Sakura tree as well(Hisana), Tousen's Bankai rids the opponent off all their senses except for Touch just like how Tousen's blind, Komamura's bankai is a Japanese soldier clad in complete armor, just like Komamura who's face was always hidden within an armor, Yamamoto's shikai is fire showing power and strict governance over the system, Gin's bankai is a poisonous long blade snake like his nature, Aizen's shikai is pure hyponis and making illusions just like how his whole outword personality was a lie. Even though Renji's zanpakuto has the form of a Monkey/snake it's more in line with his personal arc of standing up against the nobles and the system despite being a rat on the street as shown by Kubo's doodles at the end of the chapter.
Throughout the Soul Society arc Ichigo's shown to be achieving powers through his training for becoming a Shinigami and later on achieving Bankai with his Zanpakuto(Old man) helping him in doing so. Where as in the Hueco Mundo arc those very powers(White) serve as a conflict for him to overcome, not just physically but later on by coming to an understanding with them. Uryu's fight with Mayuri is about his pride as a quincy with also a theme of fatherhood playing a bigh role. Nemu despite being abused by Mayuri has a certain level of understanding of him while Uryu is completely disconnected from Ryuuken. Both "fathers" being rather cruel but rather seen through a different perpective through their artificial and human children. Uryu even apologises to Souken saying he doesn't understand his father and still has to use the ultimate technique. Although Mayuri escapes he is defeated by Uryu who in the end is saved by Nemu who gave him the vaccine to stop the poisoning.
Uryu's fight with Szayel starts as him basically assisting Renji in defeating him and despite all of his new techniques both of them fail in defeating Szayel and are ultimately saved by Mayuri who gives his famous speech on perfection and why he loates it, completely in contrast with Szayel's desire to become a perfect being. But Mayuri's very hatred of perfection later on comes to haunt him in the last arc as he also feels despair at the loss of Nemu who he came to subconsciously believe to be a perfect artifical soul with their own beliefs and desire, finally breaking the boundries with which she was created. Ultimately coming to an understanding of how much Nemu means to him. While Szayel comes to taunt him in his mind that he achieved the very pergection(creating a perfect human soul) that he loathed. Kubo shows the contradiction in Mayuri's thinking and his actions. Same with Uryu who finally understands what Ryuuken wanted to protect all along, his reasons and following the path of his father by becoming a doctor(something which he disdained after watching Ryuuken disect his mother). I went a little to far here basically towards the end of the manga but that's because this narrative of fatherhood is very much linked to Mayuri and Uryu till the end and isn't resolved until then.
Kubo masterfully inverts these arcs by showing the contradiction between the understanding of human compassion when it comes to a shinigami and a hollow aka a pure soul that was saved and a corrupted one that was left to rot consumed by his negative desires. Hanataro comes to recognize Rukia as a good individual through their conversations and the kindness she shows to him where as Loly and Menoly look at Orihime as a monster for showing them kindness and compassion. Even in the end while Hanataro actively helps Ichigo to save Rukia, Loly protecting Orihime was more about self preservation against Yami.

    • @SABNISTANMAY
      @SABNISTANMAY 2 года назад +10

Ichigo's fight with Renji is more about Renji finally coming to an understanding with what he wants to do when it comes to Rukia. His fight against Ichigo serves to change his personal view on the conflict, following his heart rather than the system even if he is no match for that system. His views are changed through Ichigo's resolve. The flashback given to Renji here highlights his reason for abandoning Rukia all those years ago due to his own powerlessness in front of the system in contrast with Ichigo's resolve.
Ichigo's fight with Grimmjow has more to do with Ichigo finally accepting his animal instincts and overcoming his guilt of having to fight with the hollow powers that makes his eyes look like Sora's which makes Orihime fearful of him. Here Orihime's acceptance of his struggles and disregard of his method of protecting her as long as it's him is what helps him overcome Grimmjow. Here it's Grimmjow who helps Ichigo in accepting his animal instinct while it's Orihime's emotional support that finally helps him in overcoming his subconscious fear of his inner demon. The flashback given to Grimmjow also helps in highlighting the contrast in his journey compared to Ichigo. As Grimmjow was asked to eat his own comrades to keep evolving, leaving them behind and not even feeling any remorse when they were killed during his invasion of the Karakura town compared to Ichigo's resolve to save Orihime and bring all of his frinends back to their home while defeating Grimmjow, Ulquiorra and Aizen.
Another interesting way which Kubo uses to invert the narrative in these two arcs is through Yoruichi and Nel and how the personal narrative of these two characters with others(Soi fon and Nnoitora) differ completely by the end. The emotional comflict Soi-fon has with Yoruichi is about her feeling betrayed by being left behind and finally reconciling with Yoruichi where as Nnoitora's conflict with Nel is about his hatred for being looked upon as the Inferior and mocked as one by Nel in her own way(The reason she follows him is being she likes to look down upon him and remind him of his inferiority) and it ends with Nnoitora staying true to this hatred while getting the death he always wanted from Kenpachi.
And finally Kubo basically makes his intention of inverting these two arcs very clear by contrasting the Ichigo vs Byakuya and Ichigo vs Ulquiorra fight in the most obvious way possible.
Ichigo wins his fight against Byakuya not just in a physical way but he also wins the ideological conflict , and wins it by overcoming the demon within him and winning as himself. Byakuya finally accepts being in the wrong and respects Ichigo and his resolve. He is changed by ichigo's resolve.
Ichigo win his fight against Ulquiorra in name only as it's won at the very expense of the ideals he upheld against Byakuya. Here Ichigo finally gives in to his inner demon(against his choice as he was basically dead) which he was able to overcome against Byakuya, becomes a monster, slaughters an enemy, almost kills a friend with said friend ironically being saved by the enemy he was fighting against. After his fight with Byakuya Ichigo screams his victory with Joy but here he only screams in shame of the victory he achieved. Here Ulquiorra's nihilistic outlook is changed not through Ichigo's win but rather his fall and Orihime.
In conclusion Kubo wanted to give these two arcs some similarities on the surface while giving the character completely different personal narratives with the protagonist reaching two completely different conclusions by end of the final major fights in these two respective arcs, and he achieved it masterfully in my opinion.
There is also the aspect of "The heart" conveyed through Rukia's fight against Aaroenaro and Ulquiorra's against Ichigo. Where Rukia finally comes to the realization that even though she is facing Kaien in body and mind(AA has his memories as well) his heart will belong to her, while Ulquiorra realizes in his last moments that even after all the suffering he had Orihime go through, she wasn't afraid of him and understood him, the thing he was holding in his hand was the very thing Kaien talked about people having in their palm when it comes to their understanding of others. Kubo Masterfully connects this theme of "The heart" from Rukia (someone who assists Ichigo)to Ulquiorra(who stands against Ichigo) brilliantly.

This is now my favorite vid on Bleach on RUclips. Masterpiece of a video. (But I'm probably biased because I kind of agree with 99% of what you said, and you are also a fan of Trigun, so i have extra love for this vid 💙❤) And I really know that you're truly a Bleach Fan because of what you said at 1:44:52. Bleach is probably my favourite fictional franchise ... probably. And it's because it's so damn cool. I started loving anime not because of the amazing stories these shows can tell (even though that definitely adds a lot to the experience), but because anime in general always seemed cooler that western cartoons and live action films. Anime always seemed cool to me and I always saw myself enjoying stuff like Pokémon, Beyblade, Naruto and Dragonball Z much more than I enjoyed watching western cartoons. (Shout out to Codename Kids Next Door though) Now with that in mind, imagine my pure happiness when I discovered Bleach. Just watching the opening for the first time made my 15 yr old brain think "This must be the greatest thing of all time. Why is this so damn cool?". For the longest time I was a fan of Dragonball and Naruto (had watched over 100 ep of One Piece too), and thought that those two anime where untouchable in terms of the impact they had on my life as a kid and a young teenager. That changed when I discovered Bleach. The series just reminded me what drew me to anime in the first place and am forever greatful to Kubo and his staff for giving us so much content for so many years. Like you, I watched the anime before getting into the Manga. The Manga is superior, and seemingly becomes better everytime I give it a re-read. Truly ahead of its time in my opinion and still is my favourite as far as Battle Shonen go. (Shout out to HxH though). I think it isn't a coincidence that a lot of Bleach fans tend to also be fans of shows with a lot of style and are just cool for the sake of it. (Soul Eater, FLCL, Trigun, Gurren Lagan, Durarara, Shaman King, Hellsing etc). I also do think that Kubo's writing is underrated. You mentioned how well he does his flashback arcs to tie plot threads together, but I also give him extra points for making us interested in characters before he even gives us their backstories. The one thing I actually love about Bleach is that not every character has a sad ass backstory that we need to see in order to sympathize with them. That may end up in Bleach not having the emotional moments that Naruto and OP have at times, but it definitely makes Kubo's work diffrent and less annoying because of the flashback overload. Again. Amazing video. And yes. You'll love the Bleach Novels (written by the Author or Durarara with Kubo as supervisor. They are also canon to the story and answer a lot of unanswered questions)

Also read the CFYOW novels they are considered cannon and expand on lore that could not be expanded on due to the nature of the story, it following Ichigo, and Kubo's rush to complete bleach due to his declining health. They essentially tell you why Aizen wanted to overthrow the SS (If yk the info within the TYBW wasn't enough of a clue), closes story beats that Kubo was unable to conclude within the manga and dives deep into the political landscape of the SS.

I genuinely love how Bleach uses different names for similar powers, because they are from, for the most part, completely insular cultures. Arrancars wouldn't know that Soul Reapers have Kido which is a type of spiritual energy magic like their Cero. Same for basically everything a Quincy does, which is also an insular society.
Not to mention the fact that they are all done in slightly different ways even if its to similar effects.

This 2 hour long fan review is pretty much a love letter to Kubo man. Can't believe I didn't get bore despite a large chunk of it being a summery of the arcs. I guess what makes this video work is the oozing unending love for an artist that felt genuine through and through, and the comedy bits added in off course. Bleach is a series that got me into anime as well, it's a series that feels personal also because of it's central themes of grief, death, courage and how it connects to some of my own experiences in life. It's by no means a perfect series and everyone will have their own grips with it but It feels so honest on every single panel while being so unapologetically cool that you can't help but feel passionate about it.
The only thing I guess you missed was Kubo's poetry and how the poems at the beginning of every volume are connected to the characters on the cover and their story inside that volume, the rough doodles at the end of every chapter that half of the time are short SOL stories or are a brief summery of the chapter in the best symbolic way. No Bleach fan can deny the disappointment and anger they felt after the rushed ending of the manga but after learning about Kubo's health issues, his constantly declining health since 2011 and this short story about himself which he posted on twitter in the form of a 10-15 pages of manga 3 months after the ending which makes my eyes wet every time I read it,
    www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2016/11/17/bleach-author-shares-emotional-story-of-ending-manga
It made me respect Kubo not just as a mangaka but a fellow human being. The anime returning is pretty much the second chance for Kubo to tell the story of the final arc the way he wanted without being rushed. Which is also why so many are looking forward to it. Bleach deserves a far better send-off than what it originally got. In the end it's just good to see the amount of positivity Bleach is getting since the announcement of the Anime's return on the internet. As a fan I am thankful to you, videos like these is what reminds me of the love I have for this series. Hope you make more Bleach content in the future.

I get where you're coming from with most of your opinions on bleachs shortcomings, but for the most part i think you hit the nail on the head with "its the coolest shit." some fights suck (weird owl god v. kyoraku sucked so much ass), and the ending was very clearly rushed but kubo clearly always wanted to do more with these characters and make them more badass. Also the anime from what i've seen has the perfect aesthetic, but its just upsettingly annoying in the way it adapts the manga

    Great video man.
But I kinda would have liked to see you go more in-depth for the fight with Ichigo and Byakuya.
I always saw their fights as mirror images, two sides of the same coins.
Both are the eldest sons of their families, both are responsible for the care of their siblings, both lost a loved one that still weighs heavily on their minds and they both have a strong sense of duty and honour except for Byakuya it’s the duty and honour he feels he owes to the Kuchiki clan and the Soul Society and Ichigo is the strong sense of duty and honour he owes to his loved ones.
When those two are battling in that final fight it’s the penultimate clash of these ideals because you can see how both are right in their own ways.
I also think Byakuya conceded to Ichigo because I think he probably could have kept fighting more than Ichigo could and gave him the win after testing his resolve.
Hands down THE best fight of the manga/anime.

I'm only a half hour into this video and was already enjoying it but it instantly catapulted to a 10/10 when you used neverending journey from lost odyssey as the background music for your character writing segment. the combo of my favourite manga and favourite jrpg that i didn't know i needed.

Awesome video! Tbh I can't understand people saying Ichigo is a bad protagonist; I feel like he's the one people can relate to the most. No shade on Naruto, but his main goal is to become basically our equivalent of a president/king. How many people dream about that? On the other hand Ichigo's main goal is to protect and you'd have to be a psychopath to not want to protect people you love&care about. Also, Ichigo's depression, his struggles with powers, inner demons...? It makes him so much more human. I remember how early in the series Rukia showed Ichigo what will happen if he doesn't protect souls and that episode (I was 12, 13yo when I watched it the first time) left a huge impression on me.
Also, I definitely don't like the last chapter and I pretend it doesn't exist ^^ I feel like I should point out I'm not IchiRuki shipper just to be safe ;) I dislike Ichigo ending up with Orihime because it's stupid and it's been done before. Ginny Weasley spends years obsessing over Harry and gets him in the end? Yes (although he at least acknowledged her existence at some point, after her personality made 180 turn). Hinata has been in love with Naruto for years, Sakura with Sasuke, so in the end both these girls get their boys... although without any indication that these guys want them. So the same solution to Orihime's, Sakura's, and Hinata's feelings happening so close to each makes my skin crawl. Not to mention I'm really not a fan of trying to molest anyone in their sleep under any circumstances so Orihime really screwed herself up with that for me.

In defense of the Bount arc I love that arc had I never seen that arc I wouldn’t have watched bleach but it had me tuned in every week from start to finish and if people say it’s the worst arc it still got me to read and watch bleach for 15 plus years…. It was the very first bleach arc I ever saw so it holds a special place with me

Okay, so what's with Zangetsu? It's true Bankai form is apparently that of Ichigo's original Shikai and yet Zangetsu never reverts back to it's dual-bladed true Shikai form. Has Ichigo just gotten so powerful that Zangetsu's stuck in Bankai, or did it somehow change again in the intervening time between the final battle with Ywach and the epilogue?

I love this retrospective of Bleach it's probably my favorite I've seen good work I may even watch the anime some time in the future Also it sucks that Thousand year Blood War had to end the way it did burnout is one thing but the Combination of Burnout and Executive Fuckery made it's later half so much worse. and as much as other Anituber's like to Shit on Bleach I have something to say Gege Akutami outright admitted that Bleach was one JJK's biggest inspirations that's right without bleach walking Jujutsu Kaisen could never be able to run like it is doing now.
