This one hits on a personal level. When I was 19, I was staying in Vegas and preparing to fly back to Illinois. I had about 75 cents and my plane ticket and about 10 hours to find my way across the city to McCarran, so I started hoofing it. An elderly, well to do "gentleman" picked me up on the way and, since I had so much time before I had to be at the airport, offered to take me to his condo for a meal and a few beers. He also wanted me to "get some sleep". After multiple advances and an attempt to grope me in my sleep, I told this guy that I was way too uncomfortable and couldn't stay. He was gracious enough to still drive me to the airport, (I just realized that it was probably to prevent me from heading to the police station. Huh.)
Anyway, it was a terrifying situation, even though I was 19, 6 foot tall and 200 pounds, and this guy looked remarkably similar to our Joe in this story. I'm not a violent person, absolutely abhorr it, actually, but I was 19, broke and desperate. You can imagine the thoughts that flew through my head. It was one of the most terrifying situations in my life. And I've been through some doozies. So maybe Kai isn't as creepy as I thought. I can at least comprehend, if not condone. Peace.

Saaaame. The old man hanging out at that bus station is sketchy af. Especially since I'm pretty sure bus stations are a pretty common place (throughout most towns/cities in the US at least) to start when you're looking for illegal goods and services. In Baton Rouge last year there was a business man here for work. He disappeared then his body was found dumped in a bad part of town days later. His family/friends/coworkers swore up and down there's no way he was doing drugs or anything of the sort. Yea, turns out he'd been asking around to see if anyone knew where to buy certain types of drugs all evening, the night he disappeared. They have footage of him at the bus station downtown with some people known to be involved in that sort of thing. Long story short, they found out he over dosed while with a drug dealer and two hookers. They panicked and put him in the trunk of a car for a few days. Dumped the body in an empty lot when it started to stink.

Caleb was a good friend of mine, and I am so saddened that his life went this way.
A couple pieces of info I think you missed: he is a Canadian and he grew up in and out of foster homes, where he suffered unspeakable abuse.
During his "home free" phase I believe he was suffering some kind of mental health crisis as he literally grabbed onto a moving freight train one night and left his life behind, and that was the last we saw of him... He had a very nice girlfriend, he was going to school to become a paramedic, and had a job as a personal trainer, and he had friends who would do anything for him.
He was a good friend and he had a (mostly) positive effect on me and my life. He didn't have much, but he would give you the shirt off his back and he was wise beyond his years.
I believe his version of events surrounding the murder, I don't think that justifies the killing... It is what it is. The guy he killed was obviously taking advantage of a mentally ill young man for his own sexual desires.

The idea that Kai wasn't immediately in danger fails to take into account two things: 'being in danger' in regards to a person's actions relies on their perception of their environment; and the sheer impact a rape victim's PTSD can have on that perception.

Honestly, no sex between a homeless person and someone offering shelter for it is truly "consensual". This is known as survival sex, it may not be full blown violent assault but it is still taking advantage of someone just as much as say exploiting an addict is. While Kai could have technically walked away without a real threat from Joe, it may have been an unwalkable area, his gear could have been inaccessible, or he may have felt so repeatedly talked advantage of by this point that he legitimately had a mental breakdown. He also may have been experiencing flashbacks to the situation of being trapped in the car that made him viral that also had witnesses present to corroborate. This may not be a full excuse, but it should be taken into account during sentencing.
I've been homeless. A lot of people look at you as subhuman. I learned fast to not give any man who pulled over and asked if he could help the time of day because they are always sex pests. Please keep in mind that if you've ever had a rough patch where you had to move back in with your parents, you were one step away from us. Deceased family or family who is thoroughly toxic can land you there, though granted sometimes the homeless person is the toxic family themselves.

Mental health affects us all. Kai demonstrated in the heroic interview that he is truly himself. He is capable of the extremes from free spirit with gratitude to excessive rage. The chemical imbalance in his brain then exacerbated by weed and alcohol consumption. The jury doesn't care about mental health they only care about the brutality.
There are so many personal accounts of free spirit young men being taken advantage of by high status older men throughout time. Kai took the law into his own hands.
I avoid those who are intoxicated by more than one substance. Weed is usually all I can tolerate being around. Alcohol and everything else and in combination always leads to horrible events!

At the end of the documentary they literally say that the joint found at the scene had nothing other than marijuana in it and the driver's toxicology report only showed weed in his system. So that theory has been debunked.

This Joe guy was 100% a predator. Being a white lawyer and 73 doesn’t make him anything but more untouchable by the law. Duuuuuh!! He went after Kai for a reason. And it wasn’t to “give him shelter”. What a bunch of B.S. I saw Kai’s documentary on Netflix. If anything, he was honest. Always. About everything. And wanted to keep people from being hurt. I firmly believe he would not have killed Joe for no reason. Something happened in that house. Unfortunately for Kai, he killed a man. Even if it was self defense. The trial should have reflected that. And it didn’t. He should get a new trial.

A very strange case to say the least. Innocent people get convicted all the time and this case isn't any different. I'm on the fence on weather Kai was raped or weather the actions were consensual. 57 years seems a little steep on hear say evidence.

Just because he enjoyed the company of younger men and this particular younger man was willing to BE that company (he's not slow), doesn't make the older person a BAD person. I'm pretty familiar with this case, and it is definitely not very cut and dry. Kai 100% did not receive a fair trial. Not saying that he is completely blameless for what happened, but I would lose my shit too if I came to and realized that I had been drugged and raped.

    • @WoWGirl6
      @WoWGirl6 2 месяца назад +4

💯 Dude is not blameless but it’s much more nuanced than face value. Also, it’s funny how they make a distinction between self defense and killing in a fit of rage. That would piss off any dude. Not women perse, but men, definitely. I think women would have had a more cunning approach. There’s one story he covered of a woman who poisoned her stepdad because he had nude photos of her since she was 14 on his laptop.
