- How to use FX in GarageBand iOS (iPhone/iPad) on a single track using the merge function.
The FX feature is GarageBand iOS is a great way to remix your tracks and add some effects and variation to your beats. However, by default the FX track applies to every track in your project.
In this video, I show you a cool trick to merge a single track with the FX track to add FX to just one individual track instead of the whole song.
Here's an overview of the process:
1. Add the effects using the FX function
2. Select the track (or tracks) you want the FX added to, and then tap and select "merge"
3. Tracks are merged with the FX track and sent to a new audio track

Pete Johns by the way, the copy track didn't work for my dead track, so I took a chance on Merge tracks, and it worked!! I figured I was losing the track anyway, so why not try it.

some things are so simple, all we need is someone to guide us! thank you, I imagined that such a complete app as garage band wouldn't have such a gap like messing up the whole song with an FX that is made for only one track

You are a GODSEND!!!!! I’ve been struggling for YEARS trying to figure out how to attach a single FX to a single track! I knew I should have come to your channel first (I’ve been subbed to you for quite a while, so I must have had a cerebral malfunction not to check your video library all this time). I generally use Logic for all recording but when I want to do something quick and easy, I try to use GarageBand iOS and 99.99% of the time I give up as it seems so difficult (which is odd since most Apple iOS apps are very intuitive to use). Such a powerful mobile app but the interface messes me up routinely. I’m so glad you are out here rocking the iOS GarageBand app the way you do. No one else even comes close to the knowledge you share with the world regarding GarageBand iOS. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

I wish Apple would invite you to an Apple Store to give an official demonstration on how to use GarageBand. The Apple employees that do it are not that good (I know they’re doing their best, but you can tell they don’t use it outside of demos.)

Not at all. It’s a great way to learn how great songs are structured and helps you greatly with you own original songs as well as you’re recording skills. 👍

Check to ensure you are tapping on the actual instrument icon and not the audio waveform. Should work then. Cheers.

Hi, after I have merged the FX with one part, is there a way I can unmerge them in a later section to apply to all parts? It seems that if I simply undo the FX, it will undo the section which was reserved for one part as well.
Maybe instead copy and paste the part you want FX on to a fresh new project then copy it back? studiolivetoday.com/garageband

Hey there. I"m not sure what part of the process you're up to here sorry? Might need some more info.
What if you want to go back and adjust things later?
The merge function makes a copy. So you would need to go back and copy and paste it back in.
If you've already answered this I apologize but what if instead of just one you wanted to merge two or more to the fx? How would you do that?

Hey there. Thanks for your kind words. When you merge a track with automation, that automation is indeed “baked in” to the resulting audio.

does this only work with certain fx? im trying to merge gater fx with an instrument track, but when i merge it, the fx doesnt apply to it.
It only works with the actual “FX” option in GarageBand. studiolivetoday.com/garageband

When I’m done recording the song
I press play to hear the FX
But it doesn’t play the FX
Why’s that?

How is this not a stock feature? Is it just a cpu thing? Either way, good work around...not being able to send individual instruments to FX makes this a dealbreaker for some genres
Yes, it’s a good point. I think they were going for simple over flexible with GarageBand. But like most things, there’s generally a workaround if you try hard enough! 😄

Great video how do use separate FX on different instruments? I tried record different FX on a different instrument but the show up on the same FX track ?

It’s at 5:05 when I record Fox for a new instrument it appears on on the same FX trap that I recorded earlier am I right in guessing I just merge the instrument with the new highlighted Fx and it won’t integrated with the earlier Fx recording. And if I record a different Fx for various instruments at the same time stamp will they overweight each other with the new FX recording but not overnight the merged copy ? You can see why I’m confused

Hi Pete, just having a headache with Remix FX. I deleted the FX from the track headers and I've shut off the the On button on the header and for some reason the FX still plays throughout the tracks. Why can't I get rid of it? Appreciate any help!
I would just delete the purple section while it’s on as it is unlikely it can okay then.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete, I did that and it stayed stuck on all tracks still. Everytime I turned on FX although I deleted it, it would play again, even when trying to replace it with a new FX. Crazy thing is that it plays the FX when FX is on but there is nothing on the FX track whether on or off. I ended up giving up and pasting everything on a new GarageBand doc.

Sir I'm using Roland E09 keyboard.. along with iPad mini's GarageBand
So I already added FX to a song I was making and chopped everything up to match with it. But now I wanna add vocals to that FX section and whenever I record them they’re being effected by the FX. What do I do ?!?!?! I don’t want to start over 😔
Might need to merge down the rest of the track using this method, turn off the FX, then record the vocals.

Do you know how to sync samples or tracks to the project bpm? I’m mixing 2 tracks together but can’t get the bpm for both to 150. Also love your videos.
Thanks for the kind words my friend. So, garageband itself can’t change tempos and beat match unfortunately. There are some third party apps which can help with this but I haven’t spent a lot of time researching them sorry. AnyTune is one that has been recommended to me and sounds promising.

Can you fix an imported audio not syncing to a drums or piano in garageband loops
You can adjust it using an app like AudioStretch, but there’s no real way to adjust tempo or pitch of an audio file in GarageBand. ruclips.net/video/VbEzhygQqgw/видео.html
