Take an average sounding instrument. Hit a few times the random button until it sounds AMAZING.

I have a question but I’m sure that this is something that will help any new Garageband composers. I use Garageband on iPhone and after I’m done setting up all my song parts, I reach the stage where I have to tweak those tracks to get their volume levels set so that they blend properly and one track doesn’t out blast another, etc.. Something that I’ve always kind of muddled through. My question is, you need to figure out, what counts as loud? What track should be the loudest and more up front? What should be the volume slider setting for your baseline out front track and what is the base loudness that you should set to aim for? This is essentially mixing. Mixing always seems to boil down to “Make it sound good to yourself in your own individual way.”, in all tutorials I’ve seen. But none of them ever go over, what should we set as the loudness of our starting point? When I make music, my drums are always the loudest part and I always use the drum track as a measuring stick for everything else (IE: This part needs to be quieter than the drums. And this part needs to be quieter than that part. And this part needs to be in between the drums and the other part.). What I’d be interested to know is, how should you set that base, starting, loudness of your most out in the front track? What level should you aim for? How should you set that volume slider for it?
