The beginning of my original comment was about complimenting your video quality and congratulating you for your contribution over the last 10 years, I then proceeded to mention that Geoshred was indeed compatible with AUv3, but as I stated that I couldn't see myself using the app because of its distracting visual feedback, that's what got censored... I had no idea YT filtered comments with this level of inaccuracy....
And soon it’ll be on macOS!

Huh, that was a loooong video, but worth every second! You’ve nailed it. For some of the apps even a dedicated old iPad would be worth. Still much cheaper than any synth manufacture can do.

I went through my apps and realize that I have the OG GeoSynth and not GeoShred. Looking at the price point, shaking my head slowly but still tempted… :)
It was a great time to have my first Apple product, a brand new 2012 iPad, filled with FREE apps! The most I paid was about $3.50. I was working for Microsoft from my Seattle apartment, watching iPad Today with Leo Laporte and Sarah Lane. What a great time!

what I liked was the apps, Where are you put in a mathematical formula and out pops a sound.
what it's doing is it's actually generating the waveform from the math operation
using time T as a driving parameter then sending that through some operations all they need is some way of adding some functions and then using something to add those functions dynamically
you could generate something that's a little bit like an analog synthesizer, but it's all digital and uses math instead of modules.

Thanks for showing us those pure gems, Jakob! 👍 My favourite is Lemur, however it doesn't fit into this list, since in fact it's just a touchscreen midi/osc controller with bunch of incredible templates, especially for Reaktor ❤ Unfortunately it's been discontinued just like many other iOS music apps 😢

Thanks for another great video, Jakob, and for 10 years of informative and entertaining content. As for touch stuff, I'm constantly using Geoshred and Borderlands, and sometimes SpaceCraft. I have the TC apps, but found it difficult to create setups that fit into my musical style. I also really love Samplr, but don't use it nearly as much.
Thank you so much for the support all these years! And I hear you about TC stuffs they are among the absolute best ones when it comes to this stuff, but they have that steep curve due to their complexity. I mean, I think the dev has done a great job with the interfaces. But it’s the depth of the apps that makes it hard to work with them. They can be time consuming to set up and sometimes hard to get the results you seek.
You are so correct Mela comes to mind, I bought it all and it’s amazing, the FX series of Enentide and 4 pockets, etc…! I bought an IPad Pro M2 and have barely used it! Mainly because I have smaller IPads with the same abilities. To plan , unfortunately my health hasn’t been holding up, but I have bought a 24 track Tascam their flagship to reverse engineer my stuff. I equipment wise am totally ready to start RUclips channels! I’m so close I can’t taste it! Thank you for the video I always enjoy your videos!
‘ MUTANT ‘ by Mazetool is one of my favourite touch apps , for jamming, creating loops to resample , and just sound mangling its own sound engine and environments.

Music is about creativity. I also have the feeling, that some of the older apps are more musical instruments, than a lot of the new AUv3 plugin tools, that look like desktop vst plugins without any touch device benefit. Very often these AUv3 plugins miss the fun and musical instrument factor the old iOS music apps offered
You’re describing the way I feel about this too. Even the marketing of the platform has changed he and it’s now being sold as a laptop replacement that you use external monitors, mouse and keyboard with. I get the pencil, but the rest I’d rather do without. I much more prefer when apps take the touch screen into consideration.

TC Data was a play on TC 11 but with midi out capability which was pretty far out for its time. Love using that sometimes pairing it up with UVI Falcon.

I have Touchscaper and I'm thinking it might work great with my Roland Aerophone Mini wind controller. I use Korg Nanokey Studio to make chord progressions to play the Aerophone over, so, given Touchscaper's usefulness in creating chord progressions, I think it might also work well with the Aerophone.

Yes, 😂 I keep doin that mistake. - Regarding the wire connection, I’ve been planning on making a specific video on the topic of IDAM for some time. Worked on the script for about 6 years I think. I just need to borrow a newer MacBook to do some final tests. 👍

I like the *idea* of touchscreen instruments. I just haven’t yet found one that is compelling for *me*. The screenboards have come closest, but none of them has been able to hold my interest. At most, on-screen keyboards and screenboards are just things I use to capture scratch versions of ideas when I don’t have a MIDI controller or other instrument handy. On the AUv3 topic, I’ll consider an app that doesn’t support it. And there are some apps that arguably don’t make sense as an audio unit. But, generally, if an app today has support for IAA but not AUv3, that tells me something about the developer that doesn’t encourage me to do business with them. And (maybe thanks to not being into any of the touch instruments) there’s almost always an alternative audio unit to use instead.

I have the utmost respect for those who might use these apps, however for me, I think I would equally, if I had the means, like to bring A cement mixer into the studio, insert mics, instruments, mud and broken glass, run the thing and go to the pub and come home to see what I’ve created….

I loved the demo for TC-11 but $25 is a big pill to swallow for an app for me.

Well, I think you should distinguish between instruments used by controllers, i.e. "musicians" who do not know how to play a musical instrument, and instruments that can be used by musicians with a musical and instrumental background. It is not the same to use, for example, Photoshop, which requires training, than a photo filter program that can be used by a three year old child.
I’m not so sure there’s that big a distinction. I don’t consider myself a musician, and I am a worse keyboard player than Jakob Haq, but I can make music in Logic Pro on my iPad, which actual musicians can also use as it’s a full DAW. I don’t play anything live, and I make extensive use of scales, chord strips, and so on to help keep me from playing bad notes, and edit mode to fix the ones that slip through. Musicians who can actually play their instruments have less need for those crutches, but they are there for people like me. I would love to see some of these as plugins that give new playing surfaces, rather than new sounds. I don’t know if that’s possible, though.
This all said, I do think there is a difference between something like Borderlands, which is so different from a typical musical instrument that plays a sequence of notes, and something like a screenboard or gesture instrument that *does* play notes but just input in a different way. Maybe what we need is a plugin architecture like AUv3 but for note input rather than note output.
@@jasonlescalleet5611 The difference is the concept, an instrument to play what you want, what you develope, to realize your ideas, and an app that may sound good or not, and get results without a previa idea of what you want. It is like to use Photoshop to realize an idea, where you have to learn and think and consecuently you make progress, and a filter app with funny results to play (game) that you do not "grow" getting better in your skills...
Simple, apps where you can do what you has in your head, and apps that you move things and something happens.
I like your way of thinking! However in my case tho I think the workflow is terrible with Ipads. The way of turning knobs, mixing and doing heavy detailed work is so off putting.. It is very difficult and clumsy in that case. The laptop is way more flexible with all the VST's etc.. Peace!

I’m getting very frustrated with RUclips. You are not the first that tell me this is the case when leaving comments. The problem is that I can’t see your comment anywhere. As a channel owners we used to have a special tab in the RUclips studio comments section where we could look at comments that are “on hold awaiting examination”. It used to be filled with comments, but now it’s empty so I can’t see if your comment is there.

Hi Jakob! awesome video quality and congrats on your 10 years milestone! On a side note, Geoshred is AUv3 compatible.
Some apps explore unique concepts (Borderlands Granular in particular). From my perspective though they often come with a degree of distraction (or you could see it as an "emphasis on the visuals") that I find overwhelming to the point where it discourages me from wanting to explore them.
My focus is more on curating optimized/low friction tools to make music, rather than chasing purely playful exploratory concepts, even though I completely recognize their great potential to be fascinating and fun on their own.
It’s a shame that Borderlands and Samplr are iPad only and not iOS universal.
next update will be iOS universal (or at least that's the plan...) :)
