just to clarify for mos (branch) insignia for enlisted goes their left collar of their ASU jacket, the one on the other side collar is US insignia. The one badge above unit awards are DUI (Designated Unit Insignia) which for enlisted you put one on beret, each shoulder and chest above unit awards. one on chest can be your current unit (same as one on beret and shoulder) but you can also put the old unit insignia, most of time people put the unit insignia from the unit they deployed with.

Hey Matt, I learned this from JROTC, but the "blue area of the beret" is called the flash. We wear the same uniform that the army wears, the only difference is we have grey berets and the flashes are black outlined with gold.
Hey Matt, Leaving for Basic end of February and OCS in May. Hoping to catch your BOLC playlist around that time! Was just wondering when an Officer would wear the beret VS the other cover mentioned with the Class A uniform? Thanks for all the pointers.
As a US Marine in the late 60's when passing an enlisted soldier on the street or a store or restaurant our greeting would just be "General" meaning that Army uniforms had so much brass, glitter, chords, patches, badges we couldn't tell what rank they held. While dining at a restaurant on leave in uniform, a young Army Second Lt. in uniform tried to dress me down for not saluting him inside the restaurant. "Don't Marines know how to salute an officer?" " Yes sir, we do. The US Naval service does not salute indoors unless covered (wearing a cap) and under arms, Sir."
I'm currently trying to figure out all that I need to buy for my first ASU, and I think my physics with calculus 1 class was simpler and easier to understand. It looks like all you get is a sheet of fabric, and then you're on your own to figure out how to make it into a uniform.
Important AR670-1 correction for your video. The device you are referring to on the ASU is not the "branch of service", but the "regimental distinctive insignia" (RDI) approved by the Institute of Heraldry and is worn by BOTH enlisted and officers in the same right pocket location above unit awards and foreign decorations. Sometimes this insignia is referred to as a "regimental crest" but should not be confused with a "unit crest" as sometimes they can look similar depend on branch. This not exclusive to enlisted US Army service members. The enlisted branch of service can be found on the lapel disk on left side collar of the ASU, and the branch is worn on both sides by officers as independent lapel pins on both collars.
Question for you Matt, is that unit crest you're little brother wearing the 32nd Armor Regiment? Sure looks like it, but it's hard to see. My first duty assignment was with the 6th Bn. 32nd Armor in Ft. Carson, Colorado 1972-1974. I realize he's airborne, so it's probably not the 32nd Armor but it sure looks like it.
Enjoyed video. I’ve been retired for sometime, but I think general officers still have two stripes on their legs . If so this could be interesting to add to video.
Also 2LT you mentioned that on ASU enlisted wear branch insignia on right chest above unit ribbons. That’s incorrect Sir. Enlisted wear basic branch insignia on collar opposite the US disc. Where officers wear two US letters and two branch insignia below them on the collar lapels. The emblem worn above right side unit ribbons would be; foreign parachute badge earned with either DUI or RDI centered above it. sends-: LTC EJ Passarelli USA (R) 18-A. 10th SFG(A)
Yes “The little Blue section” is a flash. The generic Army flash is blue with 13 white stars around the edges. It’s won by folks in units that don’t have a dedicated flash for their unit. Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces Groups have unique colored flashes to denote their unit. Enlisted wear their DUI on flash while Officers wear non-subdued rank.
Your videos are interesting im currently talking to a recruiter it took me three tries to pass the asvab but i have yet to go through meps and pick a shipping date i had a slight delinquent past which is taking more time to get me a waiver and applicant statement but your videos help alot with info thanks man

@MattWard89 Can you do a video on the army AGSU uniforms and the difference between the enlisted and the officers agsu and then the history of the agsu during ww2.
The Special Forces unit now units was approved by JFK and the green berets they wore to distinguish themselves needed a waiver from JFK to be worn because some officers outside the SF either didn’t like the look or were just against any new idea. I’m glad they stayed not only do they look sharp other units and even branches of the military with slight color variations have adopted it. My Father is in Arlington with his buddies now, but I’ve always kept his Green Beret right next to mine like father like son, I haven’t worn mine in years and if I ever have to do any hard thinking or need advice I can put on his for a minute or two. It’s still a few years that will pass before he knows it and I don’t want to do anything to influence his decision. Sure would be something special if my son won his own Green Beret, I will always be proud no matter what he does....to the best of my knowledge I think it would be the first time 3 Generations qualified wouldn’t that be something? Time will tell it always does.
It doesn't matter to some of us who have been denied military service. It's only important to the people who wear them so they'll know who to salute and say "sir" or ma'am" to.
I still like the old class A dress greens. But the NCO pants strip looks cool. The officers dress greens had a black strip on the pants but didn't stick out

Matt Ward my dad was in the national guard and the “leaders”were in the 101st airborne and he gave me one of their patches and i put it up its pretty cool!
Why is it a lot of members of the army still call the ocp uniform acu is it just force of habit or just not being notified what the army truly calls it
We still use the ACUs so as long as they are still actively worn when people in the Army say “ACU” it’s generally referred to as the old pattern where as the OCP is the new pattern so to specifically refer to that it’s just easier to say OCP. Even on paperwork and stuff like packing lists it’s designated at different. Example, “Bring 2 sets of ACU (or OCP) uniforms.”

So I have a question I'm about to be heading into high school as a fresh men and I've been looking into the military specifically the army as a choice for the future, and I'm kinda set about that. But my parents have been nagging me about going to a university and not just going straight into the military. Though I do agree it would be good to get a degree, I'm unsure if I should go to rotc and become an officer straight away, because I would like to be an enlisted first so I have the experience, but I don't know if I would have to go to university again to be a officer for that choice. I don't know. I know I still have a while to decide whether to go to university and join rotc or become an enlisted with a degree.
Honestly, it doesn't hurt to join the army as an enlisted, active duty on a 3 year contract. As active duty serving for 36+ months, your GI bill will cover 100% tuition. I would then consider enrolling at university, doing rotc and commissioning. I honestly would have done it that way myself in hindsight. I don't know your situation, but this is based on my experience.
RVillan well it if you receive the rotc scholarship, that can be 100% tuition. Rather than waiting 3 years just to go to a university, just go straight of the bat, it would take way less time anyway.
