2. System Recovery - (Will boot automatically if macOS Recovery is unavailable)
3. macOS Big Sur USB Installer Drive - (External boot for macOS Installers is enabled by default on Apple Silicon)

Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon
macOS Recovery is the built-in recovery system of your Mac.
You can use the apps in macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon to repair your internal disk, reinstall macOS, restore your files from a Time Machine backup, set the security policy for different disks, transfer files between two Mac computers, start up in safe mode and more.
Reinstalling macOS requires an internet connection. To connect to the internet, you can use a wireless or wired network connection. See Connect to the internet using Wi-Fi.
Note: if you’re trying to connect to a captive portal (for example, at a coffee shop, library or hotel) or an enterprise network, you might not be able to access the internet in macOS Recovery.

In this video, I will show you how to erase your mac and factory restore it by reinstalling macOS. A few things have changed from the Intel Mac Process. I will walk you through all the differences. Let me know if you have any questions!
My question is my download is taking like 1 hour but when I used to have Intel Mac on the same network it was faster on there
@@ikea48_human It could be that Big Sur is a big download. I think he said it's about 13Gb. Unless you mean the same OS for both machines.
Is the issue with bricking now fixed? Also why is it downloading I thought internet recovery was gone!?
I had to go through the Erase Mac way and now I don’t have a macintosh HD option! It’s unmounted.. what do I do now?
my process of install gets to 52 percent and then stops and shows an error that cannot complete the process.
Omg thanks i found this video. I kept on pressing command R, but it didn’t work at all
Last half an hour I did the same...
You sir are an amazing person ! I found myself needing this right after i got my M1 Mac Mini . I am having screen flickering issue when plugging in dual screens and thought it was a software issue so i cleared my HD and kept getting the download error. This worked like a charm !!!!!
Glad I could help Troy!!!
Thanks for the video!
I followed your steps and everything worked until I had to create the user account, I faced an issue saying "can not create user account", no matters if trying with/without appleID.
I found more people having this issue and the way to solve it (not formatting/reinstalling) is to go into your iCloud and removing MAC from your devices. Otherwise it keep some sort of link between the MAC and appleID.
In case someone else have this issue, try this way through iCloud, it worked for me.
Hey, please help me 🙏 i am totally pissed now! I have new M1 macbook air, and i erased and reinstalled macos in it! After that i am unable to create a computer acccount! It says "The name you entered cant be used" It doesnt matter what i write in place of my name it speaks the same!! I removed my mac from my icloud account (from my other android device) but still i am unable to log into my mac! I have urgent work to do and i cant even login to my computer.. Please help! I am worried 😥
When I reach the "Create a computer account" dialog. No matter what information I enter here, the setup assistant freezes for 5-10 minutes [1]. It eventually reports that creating the account failed, with no further information. It asks me to try again - if I try to use the same short or full account name, it complains that the short or full name is in use and to select something else. If I change the full and short names and try again, the same thing occurs.
If I forcibly shut down the machine at this point and reboot, I am greeted with a normal login menu - e.g. no setup assistant. The accounts that I tried to create using the setup assistant are all listed, but I am unable to log into any of them - seems the password might be set to something other than what I specified.
If during the setup process I signed into iCloud (I have tried with and without signing in), I am given the option to reset the account password using my iCloud account - but this does not work, it shakes a bit as if the iCloud password is wrong. (The iCloud password works perfectly fine on another machine.)
I have some problem like you 🤣🤣🤣 until now i can't use my mac, i have go to apple service center but they can do problem, please help me if you have suggest

I went through the process step by step, but when I press "install mac os Big Sur" it tells me: "no users available for authorization". can you help me?
Andrea, did you ever update to 11.0.1 or 11.1 ? Or did you try to reinstall with the factory OS Loaded on your M1 ?
@@Mr.Macintosh Yes i did it. now i managed to solve the problem but .. it makes me download Big Sur, the computer restarts, it makes me start over but when creating the account, which is after putting apple ID, it gives me errors such as "not you can create this account "... but the funny is that if I restart the pc without completing the account I enter the home screen and it shows me 3 accounts, where none of the 3 goes my pass hahahaha. it will be a soft problem and I will try to call for assistance😅

Really not sure why and how this slipped by Apple when they consider it one of their biggest releases in years. Pretty disappointed, to be honest
correct! can't expect this from apple
Great video. I setup my new machine transferring my old machine’s apps, data etc. Something went badly wrong and I ended up with about four different user accounts on the front screen and most of my storage had been used. Not what I wanted so I tried restoring back to factory setting. I followed your video to the letter and it’s currently restoring. However, what are Apple playing at making a factory reset this difficult? Someone new to a Mac would be up the creek if this had happened to them. Thanks for showing the way.
Hello James, That's strange! it's almost like your backup was doubled on the mac. I agree with what you are saying about restore. The good thing is the normal macOS Recovery way takes longer but it's a lot easier.
Worked like a charm! Thank You!!
Hi I have gotten up to the point of reinstalling big sur and right after I click to download it to the hard drive it says “error no users available for authorization” what do I do to fix this?

Bronwy, Just to confirm you have a new Apple Silicon M1 Mac or older intel mac ?
@@Mr.Macintosh yes, but I managed to solve the issue by following another video of yours. The problem was that the software wasn’t up to date ☺️ Thank you for your informative videos.
Thank you. I’ve been chasing my tail trying to figure out why command+r wasn’t working.
Glad I could help!
For some reason I see a data volume next to Macintosh HD so I deleted both volumes and I clicked reinstall OS Big Sur it gave me the option to choose between the Macintosh HD or Data volume so I chose Macintosh HD I don’t know why the Data volume is even there
Zain, next time be sure to click "Erase Logical Volumes" this will erase both Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data or you can click VIEW from the menu bar on the top of the screen then select "Show All Devices" you can click the container above macintosh hd and erase that.

Thanks for that! Also have a question about macOS base system, I want to sell my old MacBook and I can't erase it or unmount, is this disk have some personal data or something like that?
Hello ShredzZ, yes I would recommend erasing the drive. Try booting to internet recovery with holding down command option R. That should allow you to erase the drive and reinstall macOS!
@@Mr.Macintosh Oh, thanks for that advice!

Please it possible to bypass MacBook pro m1
Hi there. What happens when disk utility shows “no users on this volume” this is what I am experiencing right now.
Thanks for this video. Hopefully helps a lot of people. We took our brand new M1 air back to the store an they are going to send it to Apple for repair (after calling support and trying to re-install for about 5 hours in total).
The problem was after using migrgation assistant, the new M1 macbook air would not take the correct password for some reason. You have any idea why it did not take a correct password ?
Then apple support guided us through for erasing the SSD and re-installing Big Sur.
But no matter what we tried (erase again, set correct local time, connect to other wifi device), after half an our an error message came "failed to personalize the software update".
The suggested bad connection, but our internet is pretty reliable over here.
So basically our brand new M1 air was bricked from our perspective. Thanks
That sucks Bart, all they needed to do is perform a DFU restore using Apple Configurator 2 and that would have fixed your Mac! Not sure why they are not getting the proper training out to the techs :(
@@Mr.Macintosh Thank you, would you happen to know why the new air would not take the correct password of the old air after migration ? Not that it matters aymore, I'm just curious. If it helps, there seem to have been a administrator account on the old air aswell we didn't know about, but that should not matter does it ?
I think I have the same issue. I did a Time Machine reinstall and after that I cannot get into my mac. I get to the login screen but the password doesn’t work.
I reinstalled the OS and created a new account and when I get to the login screen it wont take the password.
On the screen that says, “Create a Computer Account” it fails but if you reboot I get to the login screen but the account login doesn’t work.
@@Denvercoder Yeah, I think it's safe to say that using migration assistant or time machine backup isn't recommended on those new M1 macbooks. Photo's and all your other stuff is allready in the cloud anyway. Hope you're able to recover soon. Our macbook is back and running strong, even with Big sur 1.11. Great machine.
@@BrainHurricanes I fixed my issue with Configurator. 👍🏻
I did it just like you and Apple support said, but during new instalation the hard drive was not Macintosh HD but only Untitled and blue line of estimated time remaining didn’t start from zero (or left), but from middle and time was 4 hours 20. Now I’m waiting for the end and I don’t feel sure, that it’s good 🙄. Why always some trouble must appear? 😒
Awesome guide. Thanks for this.
Im trying to remove 11.3 beta as my sideloaded apps from ipad stopped working after updating to beta. Is there any way to go back to non beta OS? I have M1 air.
Sure, a USB Big Sur installer or Apple Configurator 2 restore will work as long as you download the 11.2 IPSW.

If I don't get the login screen (filevault probably not on), is it safe to proceed deleting everything without logging in? Big Sur locked me out of the system although my password is correct.
In my disk utility internals, it just says untitled, what can i do because this is stopping me from reinstalling mac os thanks
Hello andrew, you should be able to erase "Untitled" and name it Macintosh HD or just install on Untitled and change it later.
How do I create a bootable external SSD on/for my M1 Mac Mini? I've tried several ways and keep getting told to "update". I have the installer in Applications. I have the USB thumb drive installer. I have the Recovery mode Internet installer. None of those result in a bootable copy on my 500GB USB-C external SSD. Am I doing something wrong or is it something that just doesn't work (can't be done right now, because of a bug or missing aspect of Big Sur) right now?
In an intel Mac I choose 'only volumes' and it shows 'Macintosh hd' and below that 'Macintosh data' . Do I have to do that on both ?
Hello Athan169, you will see this on both Intel and Apple Silicon running Catalina and Big Sur. If you want to do a full erase then you can click erase Macintosh HD and then click the button that says "Erase Logical Volumes" this will erase both Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data. You could also click VIEW from the menu bar and then "Show all devices" then click the container above Macintosh HD and erase that> it will do the same as the step above.
Thank you
would this be the same for the m1 minis also?
YES! I will try and get some Mac Mini content out soon!

Hello M 07 what is the errror?
Is there a reason why even though the hd is named Macintosh HD after erasing it gets renamed to untitled?
Luis, normally the HD only gets renamed untilted when you run an "Erase Mac" Or partition the disk and forget to rename it on your M1 from recovery. When this happens you can just rename it in macOS or in Disk Utility.
Mine doesn't have the "erase volume group"option? Will I brick my laptop even more if I just hit erase?
Gerard, are you using 11.3 or 11.4 ? Apple changed the process where it will perform an auto "Erase Mac" now! You can tell that this works if you are taken to "Activate Mac" after the erase.
