    It looks nice. Reminds me of when I restored my grandmothers C 1910 hatchet and gave it to my oldest daughter. My grandmother was named Lizzie, Elizabeth Tomlinson, not Borden so I called it the “Lizzie”. It was about as rough as that machete when I started and I made a leather mask for it, too.

And some of the tools I will figure it out sometime. Sorry you had the Evapo_rust problem. I have done the half then the other and no problem. But now I did find a longer pan. I know how that gets to you. I have monkey wrench that I really like and I cleaned it all up looking really good. I was going to try blueing it and it just quite working. No idea what happened. I have been all over it no luck. So I understand. Thanks

    Looks to me that the electrolytes concentrated here and deeply "etched" the steel. Could counter it with deeper liquid or a simple aquarium air bubbler to keep the fluid moving and reduce concentration spots.
    Love your heart in wanting as true a restoration as possible and retaining the pins was testament to that. So much easier to drill them out!!!!!!

  • @sthenzel
    @sthenzel 4 года назад +1

    I guess the line formed, because right at the surface of the Evaporust, the air provided enough oxygen to corrode the freshly derusted steel, the new rusty layer then was eaten away by the Evaporust, and so on.
    As others suggested, use a piece of capped drain pipe to get more depth.
    Still there may be future parts which can not be put in a reasonably sized container.
    It probably helps if you wrap the "dry" part with a shop towel and soak that, covering the area of the water line with something, shrink wrap, electrical tape, etc. might work also.

    I saw a tin of mink oil on your bench. Very smart. So many people use a wax or silicone product on leather to seal it. It does seal and keep moisture out. But it also prevents the leather
    from breathing. It will dry and crack. Leather is an animal skin and using mink oil to soften will also make it water proof. You are using ani all oil on animal skin. Will preserve it better. I have had a pair of leather hunting boots for thirty years. Oil them every year with mink oil. Same with a leather jacket and gloves. Still use them.

    • @FixitRestoreit
      @FixitRestoreit  4 года назад +1

      I used most of that can, it was soaking into the leather so fast , I got to a point where I figured it was good enough!!!!!!

  • @lucianprescott8357
    @lucianprescott8357 3 года назад +2

    A very simple fix for all restorers is to use a 1-2-3 inch PVC pipe with a cap on one end. First, you can totally submerge the entire blade and you don't have to use a lot of evaporust. I've seen so many restorers that take a small piece and break out a 50 gallon jug of a chemical and pour a gallon into a container for a 3 inch pocket knife???

    • @FixitRestoreit
      @FixitRestoreit  3 года назад +1

      I will make sure projects are fully submerged from now now on, as to the volume used - it really doesn't matter because its reusable.

    • @lucianprescott8357
      @lucianprescott8357 3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the response and feedback. You do some beautiful work and I follow your technique and process closely. I believe in the old adage, "work smarter, not harder". If I think there is "another way" to do something I'll comment, not criticize.
