I always love to mess around with old knives I find at flea markets.. I found this in a "All 1€" bucket. Is there anything better than "All 1€" buckets by the way?!
The thing I love the most is that these old blades have so much charater and odd features.. Take this one! The steel is so old you can see many impurities after the etch, just like in damascus steel! And it has been differentially heat treated, meaning that the edge is super hard (between 55 and 60 Rhc) while the spine is still very soft thanks to the edge quench it must have been used for this blade back when it was heat treated.
Furthermore, having to deal with so many materials limitations really makes each project of this kind unique in some way or another, and I like that a lot!
In this case I decided to go for a double brass bolster, inspired by old folding knives, and the separation between brass and wood is done at a 45° angle for extra fanciness! Jokes aside, I wanted to try this as a technique challenge. I don't really have precision tools or machine to make this fit reliably, so I wanted to try doing it all by eye with just the belt grinder and a "v" block as 45° reference. I have to admit I am surprised by the fit! It's not 100% perfect but pretty damn close. Better than I expected anyway!
And thanks to the brass pin in the bolster and the angle between those the wood in between is held in place just by one singe pin, no glue at all! That's something you probably don't want to see in a chef's knife as water can infiltrate, but I'll keep this one for me and I'm happy to have it all fit without glue just for the fun of it.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

me throughout the whole handle making process: wtf is he doing
Yeah, far from restoration...
Why broadcast your ignorance or is it stupidity
Wesley Bullock im not a blacksmith??? Why would i ever know any of these things??? Ive just never seen it done this way before so i was very confused but clearly this actual blacksmith knows what hes doing hence why hes doing it and not me?? Also i can say whatever tf i want on the internet??
Wesley Bullock boo

1:04 we just gonna ignore the eating sound affects 😂
I came to the comment section to see if anyone else mentioned it lol
Best part of the video.
baikai seal I know right. I had some made by gordan Ramsay it’s delicious
finally some real fucking food
"we just gonna ignore" "anyone notice?" like he didn't put them in specifically to make a joke... goddamn... How much more thirsty are RUclips comments gonna get?
Yum, corrosion, just like mama used to make
Connor McCutchon I’m almost annoyed how funny this is
It’s clean
That was funny though
And battery acid for drinks!
I don’t know whether or not he actually ate it... and that kind of scares me... I’m gonna try it...
Very meaningful work! You have reprocessed the scrap into useful products for life!
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
@Braylen Jalen Instablaster ;)
@Ahmed Mack i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Ahmed Mack it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out!
@Braylen Jalen Happy to help =)
When you started making the handle I was like what is he doing, how's he going to get the wood to fit in there after the metal is in place. Very nicely surprised, great work and it looks gorgeous.
What was the deal with microwaving or whatever that was of the wood?
@@mattperkins7038 I believe he used wood stabilizer and put it in a vacuum chamber to make sure it penetrates then cooked it to make sure the wood was dry.
He checked the moisture before cooking it, so I assume it was to reduce that
That was the fastest 20 minute vid I’ve ever watched - fascinating process!
Judging from the damage on the spine and the blade, someone hammered on that to chop through bone or a steel can! Nice restore
Next, Doug will see if the blade will still cut.
@@johnruschmeyer5769 it wil keeeel
You do a really great job on your videos.
1) No distracting music
2) No unnecessary yakking
3) You show small pieces and other important things to your viewers using close-ups
4) No wasted time showing repetitive tasks....you show just enough to give us the idea and use faster speed to save time yet still show longer tasks
I wish every RUclipsr did their videos this well.
Stunning, but one cut of the paper would have been enough, then you had to remind us mortals over and over again that you have better skills.
and i see detail the pin you put in the middle of the handle i see like a circle inside a circle then a solid like circle over it how that is awesome

Dude works crazy fast. Only took him 20 mins to restore that knife. Legend.
Daebak it’s speed up it probably took 2 days
Pee Pee really? Never thought of that
@@peepee6844 Really? What sort of sorcery is this?
Pee Pee r/woooooosh
I mean yeah it’s pretty obvious that he is highly skilled?
Crazy speed
His craftsmanship is unreal. A lot of the time, a guy can be great with his hands, or an awesome artist, BB is both.
Love this guy, he is the restorer chemist
In my opinion the old knife has a nicely shaped handle, and therefore a restoration should have followed up on this.
If you change the handle like here, then you ought to have used a lighter color kind of tree - oak perhaps - and not bronze metal. The bronze color doesn't end up well with the blade's color.
blade is a joke its not stainless steel
@@Cortesevasive Stainless steel sucks, high carbon steel rocks
The blade is a joke because he didn't get rid of the pitting and deeper corrosion. It's one thing if it's going to be a "wall hanger" but entirely different if it is going to be used.
@@Cortesevasive I hope you're joking. Stainless sucks.
The handle is great, but I'm worried about keping that blade bacterially safe with those corrosion pits.
Wait, is there a difference between that and porosity, or is that the same thing?
@@mayachaoui814 I don't think porosity is the term. I'm thinkg bits of food can get deposited in the pits, allowing bacteria to grow right on the blade. It's use after that could be suspect.
ClapTrap I have a chefs knife with a Damascus blade but it doesn’t look like this guy’s. It’s more like, swirly and textured, but not pitted. I’ve never seen a chef’s knife like this used in cooking. I shall begin the hunt. Lol
Yeah, he needs to dremel those out. Too much focus on the handle and aesthetics. When I restore, I go for function. People that want a perfect looking blade should just buy a new knife. plus my 13 kiwi knife is sharper. Those push cuts look forward rough. Seems like the steel lost its temper from getting too hot on the belt sander and now its soft.
There are Japanese knives with this type of finish intentionally put on them. It’s called nashiji, or pear skin finish, to help with food release.

By the sound of it ..Hand tool rescue is behind the scenes having a bite!!!! Hilarious!!! And the blade is absolutely beautiful!!!
Thank you for showing the world what a true artisan craftsman can do and will continue to do. You are a Master Craftsman!
Really nice restore as always. But I worry that all the pitts in the blade would be a haven for bacteria.
Nothing some boiling hot water and an alcohol dip won't fix
There is a thing called antibacterial soap that dishes usually get washed in, look it up
I mean doesn’t cast iron have pits?

Good steel is worth all this effort. A real diamond in the rough . I say this from a chef perspective.🔪
Excellent proof that anyone with unlimited time and a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of power shop equipment and specialized hand tools can perform amazing things.
The stuff this guy has is around 6 grand max and this took him i would think 1 day for shock therpy and 1 day for the knife anything is possible you dont need extreme everything.
One of the best restorations on youtube. Stunning handle
The handle was awsome, but the idea of the unfinished knife's body was aweful,
I'm so sorry to tell you that, but that beautiful shiny handle deserved a super shiny steel
Anyway and as always, you deserve our RESPECT!
That older Damascus Steel will work for another 100 years or so.
@@cliftontorrence839 this is not damascus steel, the lines you see are the result of an edge quench like a hamon you see on Katana's
lol and yet another back-handed compliment "hey it blows but hey it's fine"
You method for getting the epoxy into the mosaic pin tube is absolute genius. Your work that I've seen is absolutely outstanding. I'm still learning and finding my style and your channel is so helpful, so thank you for all your hard work and sharing things that were trade secrets 20 years ago.
Things to do when you are out of job and quarantined.
Not a chef but I am a cook and I say Bravissimo. Love old things but most of all really sharp knives. You have a gift!
Very nice job. Aren't you affraid moisture gets between the metal and the handle by the time without epoxy?
Given time what happens when you glue two unlike materials together that expand and contract at different rates? I've had this happen to chair seats even when the entire thing was oak. About all you can do is kept the blade cleaned with a damp cloth and oiled and never, ever, get the handle wet.
Dwight E Howell aa@
Best knife restorer on RUclips. Best attention to detail. Your work on the handle was super tight. Perfection!
I just love that the knife is not shiny like all the other restoration videos on RUclips
that eating sound effect gives me HowToBasic flashbacks
That Handle is Exquisite! The last 14 paper slices were gratuitous but appreciated. You are a Master of your craft. Thank you for sharing.
Great job. But I am surprised this guy has any fingers left at all!
There you are! I knew I couldn't get through a video featuring tools without one of you safety crybabies showing up.
Tell it to the hard pressed hospital staff that have to stitch mugs like you up because you choose to work under Third World health and safety standards.
i like that you didn't grind it down to a flat mirror finish like most people do, and left some of the old wear and pitting in there. still shows some history and character. nice job!
me at 6:11 : why is he microwaving wood? 🤣
Cause who want cold wood duh 😒
us mortals cant understand his actions
The simplicity, yet sophystication on this one is amazing!
Utter poetry and a complete work of art from a true craftsman. Thankyou for this. Truly.
When he brought up raid shadow legends. 🤣 Had me dying
It made me want to use that knife and slit my throat.. that game is annoying and over advertised.
been doing this stuff for 45 years , learned a couple of things on this one ! that really turned out nice !

I make knives & what this man did with the handle drove me crazy to only see what he completed & how. Wow! I liked the angled knife sharpener. Too many of us have pride not to use when we should. Super Job!
me sees the most impressive restoration on youtube.
also me wtf is wrong with your tomato?
It's in Italian kind of tomatoes and I pitty the fool who never got the chance to eat one of those.

I wish more restoration videos would clean off the pitting in the metal. There was still a lot on the blade and tang, but everything else was perfect, great job.
Love the brass handle accents. It should patina beautifully over time.
Nice new handle on an old knife
Also, you should have a "punch" made with your bearded logo and emboss your logo into your work!
Love that there is only the music of the tools. 👍👍👍
Thin slicing the skin of a tomato is nice, but can it spread peanut butter?
That brass on the handle looks AMAZING!
Brass on knife handles and Restoration videos. Two things I usually hate but this guy just knows how to do so well that I'm loving it.
Worth a lot more than 1€ now. Especially with the video documenting the resto. Nice work. It looks almost like there is a hamon where the edge of the blade has been hardened. Pretty cool.
Beh, bellissimo restauro, complimenti!!
That's the most needlessly beautiful handle i've ever seen
It sort of makes the blade look like a piece of old junk doesn't it? I really liked the blade until I saw that handle. It deserves something much fancier.
Who the hell taught this man how to cut tomatoes?
Great vid tho 👌🏻
Wtf bro thats not even a tomato thats a bell pepper n00b

Such a gorgeous piece!!! The handle is extraordinary. Definitely my favorite knife refurbishing so far.

I know this is an old video but that is such a cool knife. I love seeing the pattern after the etching...makes me happy. I hope to make something as cool as this one day.
'A' for effort but I preferred the original handle.
Narration is king.
First time here! Enjoyed that!
Respect !!! I had no idea it required so much work to make or restore a knife. I wish you had put subtitles in your video so that I would know the products you used during the restoration process but once again: bravo !
Mann the cost of the handle more than the knife itself🤔😭
Wonder full Job. Fantastic.
An artist to give a new life to this knife.
Bravo señor.
