- Tanto knife made from ball bearing steel, brass plate and mutenye wood.
Overall lenght is 36cm with 23cm long blade 4mm spine thickness.
This is the first time I try this kind of construction, it's very satifing but takes a really long time as a good fit require lots of fiddling. I also love the fact that it can be disassembled, but it sure is some extra work!
This bearing steel is very hard, forging took some effort, but it does make for a very hard edge after heat treatment, with 65 Rockwell file barely scratching in some areas. Unfortunatly the steel did not took the hamon too well, it's there, but not very dark. Still, after finishing the steel to high grits it was cool to see the steel structure peeking through after the etch in ferric chloride.
Here are some of the videos about the tools I used:

That snap sound as it goes together is extremely satisfying!
I think the hamone was nice, as subdued as it was.
his arms are now hairless and he's now resorted to shaving his legs to test for sharpness.
What part next after the legs? :O

I do love tantos... even more those with traditional designs
I love it too.
This is not a traditional tanto. It's single-beveled, the tang has no bevel, there's no profile taper on blade or tang, and forged-finish doesn't belong on the blade.
It's a beautiful knife, with great craftsmanship! But not traditional.
@@connort7497 there are a LOOOOT of types of tanto. At least 5. Yes, it has a traditional design. Ill not enter in details so deep but thats my point
I have one just like this . ( also a few others . ) I will be In Tokyo this winter on my way to Bangkok. I'd like to buy a real one in Japan .
The best part is the way the sheath and handle come together. I could watch that all day.
voyeur...😂
the sound of the wood when you sheath the knife is crisp af
the fact that you were able to freehand such clean radiuses on the scabbard and handle is so incredible.

I bet you spent a lot of time taking it out and putting it back again. Such a satisfying sound.
Stuff thats the best part about owning any knife, opening and closing it. I spydey flick my pocket knife open probably 30x as many times as i actually use it
Over time, it will wear out, and will fall out .. for this, the walls are glued with suede, or thin leather
That little tap at the end sounds so satisfying.
You seem to be able to make something out of anything most people would throw away. You are incredible.
Black Beard always do the best videos of knife and metal stuff. My favorite channel
These videos are so soothing for some reason.
Unrelated: I always enjoy when he releases his safety protocols and allows his cyborg body to achieve ultrasonic movement.
Tutte le volte che vedo un tuo video primo mi rilasso e secondo ti superi ogni volta, sei bravissimo!
It's mind boggling how you make cool stuff from waste. I'm once again blown away. Thanks so much and keep it up.
Holly poop, this tanto is sharp!
The only thing I didn't like is the unrefined bit at the not sharp part of the blade.
You've made everything else with so much detail and care, why leave this smudge?
If I remember those marks at the end are actually something your supposed to do when making Tanto, if you're going to as me why IDK but it's a kind of motif.
@@somedubmetakeshi7960 would be nicer if it had symmetry
I agree about that blemish. Maybe it’s left there to show that it is hand made?
Invalid571 I was thinking the same. Maybe it’s a stylistic thing?

Gorgeous design. Love the simplicity of the final form when it's sheathed. Another great piece of craftsmanship!! 🙌👏👍
I have a lot of admiration for this man, I was learning to make knives but the man who was teaching me is sick and I can't do shit because I don't have tools, but one day I will be like that man
love watching the temper leave the metal as the race gets heated in the forge, you can literally see the atomic structure change, that's so cool.
man, this is a beautiful artwork, and you're an artist. Congratulations and thanks for sharing it with us.
Studied traditional jiujitsu for years and years which fostered a love of all things Japanese.
I recently got some 1095 to try my hand at stock reduction (to start).
This video was inspiring and so well done. I’ll be watching again. Thank you!
A lot of work was put into a beautiful outcome. WELL DONE!!! BBP.
Best channel on RUclips! You rule dude
19:33 that fitment flex 😆
The more of your projects that I see the more respect I have for your level of detail and dedication to the craft. Thanks for sharing the journey !
My favorite thing about this is that he actually forged the knife and didn’t spend most of the video on a grinder
I like that to
Everything is done meticulousty , to create a perfect and wonderful knife !
Thats stunning! Love how It turns out. Love the scabbard 😍😍
Wow this guy is really quick I’ve never seen somebody hammer so quickly
I will preface this comment by saying that I really enjoyed the video and think your craftsmanship is impecable. That being said, I'm not sure if you decided to put your own spin on a tanto knife or didn't do enough research, but I feel like it's only somewhat a tanto. I would say the habaki fitment is not supposed to be like that and it lacks the bevels that make a knife a tanto. The way you sharpened it, with a secondary bevel, is also not the way it is usually done.
I am sure that you are more than capable of making a kick-ass tanto and would like to see one in the future. Maybe look at some pictures online and see for yourself. The skill is definitely there.
That's my beef with this video as well. If he advertised it as tanto style or tanto-like that would make a whole lot more sense
@@procrasti86 How about he made a masterpiece out of a bearing ring! You and Ricky have issues that extend beyond humanity....
I love watching you work. It is just how amazing it os to watch you change a piece of wood and the outside ring of an old bearing set and make a gorgeous knife out of it.
My name es Barry Allen and I'm the fastest blacksmith alive...
Boa kkkkkkk
😅
I love the old craft and you show that it is very easy, but nothing could be further from the truth ...
Thank you for sharing!
Definitely a nice fit up on the Tsuka (Handle) and the Saya (Scabbard) Nice touch using a steel Mekugi Pin to hold the Tsuka to the Tang as they last a bit longer and aren't prone to splintering like their oftentimes bamboo counterparts.
Now... the next time you make one, here's ha few things to take into consideration. When you're applying clay to the blade... don't use a wire wrap to hold it in place, as you probably found in out making of this video... it can cause the blade to warp during the quench. Now then, properly applying clay for a hamon isn't very difficult...
basically you mix up some Satanite with water in two different mixtures, 1 about the consistency of Honey, and 1 about the consistency of Exterior Primer. With the thinner mixture you're going to want to coat the whole blade, if you're tempering a knife at the time you can leave it on top of your tempering oven to dry.
With the thicker mixture... after your base coat has dried... using a sculptors spatula or other such tool you build up a relatively thick layer on the spine (not nearly as thick as in the video) drying it between coats, then load the edge of your tool with the thinner mixture and make a crisscross/lattice work pattern from the spine to the edge (I personally use a series of X's with little dots along the edge) dry it and then Heat treat as usual.
By the way... before I forget... you're going to want to clay the blade at no higher than 500 grit so that the base coat adheres, any higher than that and it'll pop off whilst you're drying it... Personal Experience ~facepalms~
Polishing is easy, take the whole blade up to a clean 2500+ grit, then alternate using Lemon Juice and Windex (Lemon Juice to etch and Windex to neutralize) on the blade to bring out the Hamon... hit it with a sunshine cloth and done.
That'd sure turn heads sitting along side the butter dish at Thanksgiving, even if the butter WAS FROZEN. Deceptively, elegant, yet simple, at the same time! Very very nice knife and scabbard.
Not far from perfect!Amazing skills,'m a little bit jealous!
its FAR from perfect because this guy doesn't follow japanese manuals of sword making
metal chunk must be folded ten times if I remember correctly
You are art & work. Leather, metal or wood, separate or together. The final piece is unique. All my respect.
Greetings from CHILE.
I would like to see you do a forged in fire challenge and make a 6 hour blade. I want to see how possible it is without all the cameras and directors probably fixing the show.
This one has been my favorite so far
BB : I'm thinking about some Japanese sword
Leg hair : NO! Not again. I just grow from movement control order
Lol nice😂😂😂😂
Fantastic Japanese Tanto blade !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two thumbs way up , Sir !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice endresult, I like it.
One question though. Why do you go through the hassle grinding a clean ricasso when you make a Hibaki? From a function counterproductiv to each other.
One comment then. You have a good plane and the skills to plane a perfect surface. Then you do the final shaping with the belt sander. You must love a shop full of dust.
A dashing kiradashi! The fit is a real snap, not a click. Your hamon there seems like mist and not a high contrast squiggle so it is more real to me. The beautiful wood is amazing.
Make it wooden with the help of the Woodglut instructions.
Sometimes there is beauty in simplicity. Simple, however does not mean easy. Wonderful craftsmanship!
Be well, and take good care!
A bearing race is perfect for a single edged blade. It already has taper.
Soooo.....what do we call this gentleman? Master Artist?? Master Artisan?? Master Craftsman?? He is top tier at what he does.

I love short knives and katanas and this is the perfect combo
Keep it up man!
Wasn't expecting the chisel grind but certainly not disappointed. Nifty.

What a coincidence, I'm making one of those right now, probably the exact same size.
RUclips knows too much.
So am I! How strange. So many people are doing this at the same time. Hmm...
Absolutely gorgeous, loved the attention to detail on the blade. Wonderful, such a grant piece of art. And love the snap when the beautiful wooden scabbard meets the handle.

Yeay...finally you make tanto..this is my favorite knife
Real men don't buy blades to shave their hair, real men make them themselves!
Hello! You are Russian?
Привет, товарищ!
Really beautiful!!! I would carry it in my pack every camp and hike!
why is the one side of the knife not clearly sanded
Great craft.
A manufacturing method that is not bound by tradition.
Why is one side "clean finished" while the other still has the spine forge finished?
Exactly what i was wondering.
Because that's beautiful...
its a chisel grind
Yes! Why?
The OCD in me hates that. It just looks so wrong!
I clicked because of the thumbnail it looks cool
You forgot to chisel your initials into the tang. I’ve heard that’s important 🤷🏼♂️
Lol 😂
Lol [1]
the sound when you close the tanto... I can't express this feeling hh
"nooooooooooo stop blacksmithing, we have factories that do all the metalworking you're wasting you your time!!!!!!!"
"Tee hee hammer go ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping"
Give this man a award for hitting that metal at least 1000 times
Very nice
But if it was mine I would make it glossy like a mirror.
After watching this beautiful craftsmanship, I made one, of course not as perfect as yours, but it was very self rewarding. You sir are an inspiration. Thank you.
wow i'm early
I wish I could buy this for my boyfriend!!! Lol I’d probably keep it myself. Haha. It’s very beautiful. Love your work. I can see that you love your work. Wonderful!!

If you’re going to make a knife in 52100, got to do it right make sure you run it into the low 60’s on the Rockwell scale-refreshing to see it done properly. Excellent work.
