OLED manufacturers really need to pay Microsoft to implement ClearType for their sub pixel layouts. I always notice how text isn’t rendered nicely with sub pixel layouts that aren’t supported by ClearType, so I don’t really want to get an OLED monitor (even though I love OLED and have one for my TV)
@@VladK-1 Yes, it does look better with ClearType disabled, but it's just not as good as an something with ClearType. Could I live without ClearType? Yeah, probably. But it's just really disappointing that ClearType exists yet it can't be used with the incredible new display types that are on the market.
So nice that you bring up this about perceived motion blur even if the OLED has near instantaneous pixel respons time! I remember comparing an OLED TV from 2017 with my Plasma TV from 2010 (both at 60 Hz) and thinknig motion blur must be so much better on the OLED with its short pixel response time. Oh, my what a surpsise when motion in games looked so much blurrier on the OLED!
Plasma has actual ghosting, it allows for smoother low frame rate playback than OLED. The blurrier OLED as you describe it is a human problem, as it’s perceived vs actual. Objectively plasma is blurrier, but apparently not the case subjectively.
Unless i missed it, didn’t mention the fact that IPS are usually matte, OLED are glossy; that contributes a great deal to the “3D” feeling and greater contrast
Yes, IPS panels are covered by a protective screen that prevents them from being glossy. Glossy monitors are awful if a light is coming from a window directly toward them.
Cannot think of anyone better than Ali when it comes to overall technological reviews. You stand at the pinnacle and I want to thank you for all of your hard work that goes into these videos.

As someone who went from 1080p TN 144hz to 1440p IPS 144hz I must say I'm quite disappointed how much visual clarity I lost with the IPS panel. I hope I just have the wrong monitor or something.
So, all OLED gaming monitors will have same RBG subpixels? Even in future? I much typing and reading on Windows. I don't want spend $1k on monitor with blurry text.
LG said they are working on RGB pixel layout Oleds for 2025, apparently. That would fix the issue. Kind of bummed myself since I wanted to purchase a new monitor this year but do plenty of work on my pc as well, so blurry text is not an option. So I guess IPS it is or waiting another year.
Having just made the switch from ASUS PG35VQ to the Corsair Xeneon the visuals are NOTICEABLE, beyond the 40-60hz increase, the colors.... oh my. Ony complaint is pixel density since I game and productivity. That said, so far I am pleased.
Looks to me like a lot of people who are on the OLED monitor bandwagon don't realize the sacrifice they are making with (poor) text clarity - due to OLED's lower pixel density. My Asus IPS monitor does 140 PPI. I'm sure as shit not gonna drop down to 96 or even 106 PPI with OLED just to get darker blacks, much as I would love to have darker blacks. My guess is most people don't realize how good text can look at 140 PPI and so don't realize what they are missing with OLED.
@dap777754 are you using your monitor as Ebook reader? I will never go back to IPS in a million years. I hate how black is grey on IPS and how most IPS monitors have light bleed. The problem with the text is there on the Oled but you barely notice it. If you look for it, then yes, you will always see it but this thing with text on Oled is overrated.
@@dap777754 OLED contrast doesn't boil down to just deep blacks, as was stated in the video. It depends on your use cases and priorities, I guess. Just tried an OLED and yes the color is amazing, the response time is insane, but the darker colors being completely black - as if the pixels are turned off entirely - ends up hurting my eyes as they try to make out semi dark, vs really dark pixels - they're all the same.
8:40 - That last bullet point of 32" 4k with 480Hz support is basically the end game monitor for anyone who can afford the GPU that can support 4k 480 fps... Can't wait to upgrade to it in 3-4 years.
Flicker with VRR is the final nail in the coffin for me. The shorter lifespan due to burn in was already bad enough but compromised VRR is dealbreaker for me.
I just upgraded from a 160hz IPS to a 240hz OLED. There really is some motion blur but tracking moving objects at medium speed is much cleaner and therefore easier on the eyes. As for Refreshrate: i dont feel much of a difference. - i actually wanted to get rid of motion blur with the OLED purchase but i guess therr is no way to get around that. You said more Hertz, but I doubt i could generate more than 240 frames in Call Of Duty, even with a 4090, cause that 3D-Engine is miles behind modern competitive games which easily go to 500fps😊
@@Tricendo oh, yeah. I should have mentioned that I play in UWQHD (3440x1440) which is about 4.5mil Pixels. I average are 220fps in Multiplayer with a i7 11700k and 32GB 3600mhz. Game is installed on a M.2 with Direct Storage compat. Coincidentally that keeps me well inside the GSync range, but I thought the 4090 could boost me higher, as I am well below 4k (which is 8mil pixels). Maybe I switch to 14th gen when it comes out. My 11th gen might be showing signs of weakness with a 4090, tho both components are not sweating with CoD
@prodigy_xd i would check to see what your cpu and gpu ultilization percentage is when playing and if your gpu isnt using 97% or more then yeah, you are cpu limited. Though it might not be as bad as it seems because the nvidia drivers requires a powerful cpu in order to max out the card (in your case a 4090. It basically wants the cpu to lap the gpu in performance to make sure its powerful enough before maxing out at 100%. Theres many videos showing thats the case when using a 7900xtx in the same rig as the amd card will be ultilized higher (thus yielding higher fps in some games) bc it doesn't have that dumb driver that requires a powerful cpu. So you'll want the fastest cpu to get the most out of the 4090. you seem like a plug-in-play type of guy so I would recommend a 7800X3D with 6400MT/S ddr5 ram and a b650 mobo and if that's too much then your can get a 5800X3D which is the platform I'm currently on. When playing overwatch 2 with everything low except textures high and high anisotropic filtering I get 580fps avg and my gpu (3070ti) is at 98% utilization and my cpu is at 30% utilization. I'm getting a 4090 this weekend and getting the lg 27" 1440p 240hz oled. I can let u know what my fps is matching your graphics settings and matching your res using the dsr factor in the control panel.
@@Tricendo I did some more testing and also observed all cores using RTSS (afterburner). My CPU "main" core is usually at 59%, other cores are at 30% and probably not used by the game. Frequency is 4600mhz stock. GPU is not maxed with Ultra details and DLSS Quality. Hovers around 70%. When i disable DLSS the GPU uses 97% and is "voltage limited". So it can't even rasterize "CoD Ultra in non-4k" with more than 160FPS. Not saying it should, but i don't find CoD visually that impressive that i shouldn't be able to reach more. What is dragging down FPS the most in CoD is when you set Textures to HIGH. There is something in there that kills the performance. All while they don't look much better than NORMAL. When i then turn down settings to medium-ish (textures and shadow to normal, no AO, medium AA, no Physics/Weather/Water etc.. what you could call "competitive settings") i also get the GPU usage down to 70% - but without upscaling. Pure rasterization and doesn't look much worse. Then i also get back to the 200 realm, however, i never get above 210. and during all theses multiplayer tests my CPU was not once under pressure. hmmm.. that's why i said in my first comment that CoD engine "is miles behind modern competitive games". It probably isn't made with 240hz in mind. I guess they are happy when it can push 120 on a 4K Console and dont optimized much more beyond that.

LG 27GR95QE PRO TIP: This may work for all monitors. Even if the HDR settings grays out the SDR settings. This tip can help you recalibrate your monitors for HDR even better. Turn off HDR> in SDR picture settings turn your HDMI level to high (not low) turn back on HDR and restart your game app. Everything should be fix. This isn’t an option when using DP. It's also a system wide setting, it can't be configured per monitor (which sucks if you have an RGB and an BGR monitor).

PWM, VRR flicker, at least ULMB is optional, OLED is awful for your eyes, burn-in is also real but definitely more situational. It just doesn't have enough substantial redeeming qualities in a world where Mini-LED IPS panels exist (VA is a subject to smearing and VRR flicker unfortunately) it just has to have a full backlight mode to completely eliminate PWM and be able to choose more suitable mode depending on your needs.
I'm concerned about the burn-in, especially for games with static menus like Hearts of Iron 4, Civ, etc... Do you play games like that? Is there still no burn in at the Windows bar?
Have the Alienware here. I felt like the price, Dolby Vision and easier warranty made it more compelling purchase to me over the Asus. I had to do an advanced warranty exchange with my AW3423DW and they made it sooooo smooth. All they did was ship me a new monitor (which I then sold) and had me use the shipping box plus a provided pre-paid shipping label to ship back the old AW3423DW.
One thing that you didn't mention is HDR gaming which while only some games have great native implementation, you can make some games look amazing with Windows auto HDR. Overwatch here pops out even more when I enable HDR on my LG C3 which complements the clean cartoony artstyle. Just make sure to use HGIG if possible to retain the most accurate image.
That´s not true. Many Games have great HDR! Or do you play only on PC and it is that bad? On consoles HDR is on nearly every big Game, but also on smaller more and more. Auto HDR is crap. HDR is about Dynamic Range, more Colors and also more details. Fake HDR is not the same.
@@GalaxyFlow7 Yes I play on PC. HDR is way better on console. I only have maybe 4 games which look good in native HDR. About Auto HDR I moreso meant you can make older titles have a bit more pop. It's not a replacement to real HDR by any means. But seeing Tomb Raider Legend (a 2007 game) for example in any form of HDR is awesome.
Just made the switch from 10 year old TN panel to 240hz IPS and this already blew my mind but I can also use it perfectly during the day for office work without any worries about burn in or textclarity. For immersive single player I can still play on my Oled 4k TV.
One thing that you (and many other outlets) fail to mention about OLED is the flicker. Where the only advice given to get rid of it is to either disable G-Sync or limit your frame rate.
Backlight strobing is a game changer. It essentially eliminates motion blur and you see perfectly clear frames. The only downside is the reduced brightness.
The OLED model is very nice, if exclusively used for gaming. The problem with the text clarity (not a problem of OLED but the specific panel that uses an extra "W" LED) and the danger of burn in (e.g. regarding the task bar), make it unsuitable for me, who wants to use a monitor for things other than gaming. BTW, the out of the box calibration of the OLED model is not nearly as good as that of the IPS model. Regarding Asus' design, what were they thinking when they gave the monitor a lit up chin? That is so distracting and must be super annoying when playing in low light conditions. I hope that all the lighting gimmicks the monitor offers can be turned off.
The OLED here sounds insane, the only problem is it's not 4k. I had such a hard time buying a 4k monitor because here in Australia, there's no high-end options, all the expensive monitors have significant drawbacks. The 4k X28 monitor I got is an IPS and it's only HDR400, you can get some OLED 4k monitors here but for some reason their mostly big 42 inch ones and at weird refresh rates like 138hz. I just want a 27 inch 4k OLED that's at least 144hz with Adaptive Sync and good HDR, but for some reason there's nothing available.
So how do you feel about this vs something like the xl2566k in terms of competitive quality? I know you compared some shots of motion blur in the video, but does the xl2566k give an actual noticeable improvement in smoothness / performance with DyAc+?
Thank you for answering all the questions I had! This video definitely convinced me to buy the IPS 360Hz simply because I will have to look at a lot of text throughout the day when not gaming on this thing.
I love CRTs for their depth, no native resolution, and zero motion blur and also mainly use an IPS panel for most things but man, having owned 2 OLED phones and an OLED Switch, I want an OLED monitor for PC and console.
I still think it's strange that black frame insertion hasn't been implemented in these monitors. Maybe they're intentionally holding it back for the second gen.
27GR95QE is already very dim. Black frame insertion makes picture significantly dimmer so this simply wouldn't work. But in case of PG27AQN... yeah, it's a fail af it hasn't got it.
Great review. Can you explain how they have 'extremely good HDR' when their max brightness is only 248 nits or whatever? I thought the higher tiers of HDR relied on the monitor being able to go pretty bright.
The peak brightness isn't 248 nits on HDR, it's much higher. Also, HDR requires good contrast even more than high peak brightness - high brightness doesn't do you any good if your "black" is bright grey. Major additional benefit of HDR is that is has far more image information: better colors, more nuance on lightning etc.
For HDR to make sense you need to be in a dark environment. It's all about the contract between zero blacks, and shiny whites that pop out at you plus the more realistic colour pallette. 250 nits is already quite bright but when there's for example a flash or reflection off a puddle on my LG 42 C3 it gets up to like 700 nits. For bright viewing you should be running SDR with calibrated settings.
Good review thank you, I was about to go for OLED until you mentioned the bright room issue and the blur for everyday work use, you saved me time with this review!
Both things are non issues. OLED blows IPS out of the water in almost every category and its not close. Only reason to stay away from OLED is if you are scared of image retention and burn in.
I got my oled ultra wide when I was playing loads of star citizen… you can see every little star where as my lg ultra wide ips kind of just blurred them out compared to the oled. Cannot go back, it is too damn beautiful

Hi, I am interested in the comparitive power consumption usage of these two monitors. I hope you can consider adding this info in future videos. LG monitors seem to offer very decent built in speakers for their monitors, such as 2 x 7w or 2 x 5w speakers, and they sound pretty clear. Monitor speakers of other brands typically seem to around 2 x 2w, which probably makes them sound tinny. I mainly use headphones, but it's nice to use the monitor's speakers if they offer decent performance, and it's less stuff to plug in.
Watts have nothing to do with actual sound quality and no monitor has good speakers. They just sound bad. Like, really bad. 10$ aliexpress soundbars sound better.
@@RapidReelTV Yeah putting speakers in monitors is a waste of space and money tbh. Especially high end ones. If you can afford a $600 monitor you can afford $50 speakers that will sound infinitely better than anything built into a monitor.
My LG monitor is the only monitor I've ever had with speakers I was acceptable with as a main speaker. It's no audiophile speaker but all other monitor speakers are worthless which makes the LG stand out.

With 4K resolution the text without ClearType actually looks pretty decent. You can disable it easily.
@@VladK-1 Yes, it does look better with ClearType disabled, but it's just not as good as an something with ClearType. Could I live without ClearType? Yeah, probably. Oh, my what a surpsise when motion in games looked so much blurrier on the OLED!
oled does not have good motion blur , some ips ads panels are better in that aspect actually
That’s because plasma has actual ghosting making a smoother perceived motion blur.
The in depth explanations in this video are amazing. Dropping bangers as always!

Backlight strobing is a game changer. It essentially eliminates motion blur and you see perfectly clear frames. The only downside is the reduced brightness.
yea but the pg27aqn with ULMB 2 enabled is still brighter than the lg oled 240hz at max brightness
I watched your video, I might've missed it because there's no stamps... but what's the difference in input lag between these two monitors?
@7:00 You can't have backlight strobing on an OLED panel as the pixels themselves produce the light. There is no backlight to strobe.
Haha same maybe next year :(
I’ve been watching every review possible on this new oled, but that seals it. Definitely going to grab one of these. Thanks so much for your reviews!
Got my alieware last week it just hits different its insane
F for the 999$ 😂
So how do you feel about this vs something like the xl2566k in terms of competitive quality? I know you compared some shots of motion blur in the video, but does the xl2566k give an actual noticeable improvement in smoothness / performance with DyAc+?
Dyac does make the image much smoother at the cost of additional latency.
if you are really sweaty and your eyes dont die after playing with shimmering just get the benq
@@Piety_RS What additional latency? Dyac shouldn't add any, if it does it is negligible.
@@Piety_RS not only that, it also doubles the amount of targets with double imaging, so much more fun.
Yeah for the ultra sweaty players the XL2566K is best. 1440p is only for eyecandy not sweat. That's why none in competitive plays it.
Definitely. They learned their mistake with LG C1 series being too good and then C2 and C3 sales were weak.
27GR95QE is already very dim. Black frame insertion makes picture significantly dimmer so this simply wouldn't work.
But in case of PG27AQN... yeah, it's a fail af it hasn't got it.
@@RJ-vy4yd Yeah more likely cuz they just don't have the high brightness y et to do it without making image unviewable except in darkest rooms LOL
what would you recommand between those 2 monitor or the zowie xl2566k?
what did you decide?
@@ronald0122 didnt buy any but the zowie xl2566k is the best monitor for competitive gaming
Great review. Can you explain how they have 'extremely good HDR' when their max brightness is only 248 nits or whatever? I thought the higher tiers of HDR relied on the monitor being able to go pretty bright.
Peak brightness matters for HDR, not whatever the monitor maxes out at in SDR
Классные мониторы.
4:33 На экране монитора OLED сильно заметна клетки?
Good review thank you, I was about to go for OLED until you mentioned the bright room issue and the blur for everyday work use, you saved me time with this review!
Both things are non issues. OLED blows IPS out of the water in almost every category and its not close. Only reason to stay away from OLED is if you are scared of image retention and burn in.
I got my oled ultra wide when I was playing loads of star citizen… you can see every little star where as my lg ultra wide ips kind of just blurred them out compared to the oled. Cannot go back, it is too damn beautiful
Do you think the ultrawide oled you have would be good for competitive ish gaming
Cause I’m used to 27” so I’m looking to upgrade to 34” oled or 27” oled
I would love to see Zowie switching to OLED and giving it dyac but I highly doubt that though. Would definitely want to see microled one day come to monitors and see what it could do
and IPS too
i dont think you can use dyac on an OLED. it doesnt have a backlight, as all the pixels are self lit
@@James-cr8mt You can just turn the pixels totally off to get BFI/DYAC. And as he says OLED doesn't have that extra brightness to play with.
In the future when we get brighter OLEDs it should be possible.
Or when any other self omitting panel technology we get in the future.
We are looking at easily 10 years before microLED technology comes to monitors and becomes relatively affordable.
That Oled monitor looks like an awesome treat.
I somewhat recently went from an old Acer 144hz VA-Panel Monitor to an AOC IPS Panel 165hz GSync.
3 weeks in and i was still talking about how awesome that IPS Panel looks and how nice that monitor is lol ( both 1080p ).
Can only imagine the beauty of OLED.
One Day..one day. :D
Especially looks good compared to the IPS and especially cause he put the IPS monitor on much lower brightness.
Amazing review.
You are singlehandedly the reason I’m getting the asus oled. I’ve been all over Reddit and RUclips trying to decide what to buy.
You’re video made it clear to me
Im a StarCitizen player and i think depending on the Game you play an OLED Panel can be a gamechanger. I mean if you are in Space, then perfect Blacks will most likely hit different. Ive seen a good OLED 3440x1440 Monitor für just 720€ lately... When they are even cheaper in 2 or 3 years i will definitely buy one of these.
After switching to OLED i dont think i could ever go back to IPS. Colors on OLED are so insane.
Nah you could. I game between OLED and IPS all the time. IPS is still great.
@Ferrislilly Oled isn't that big difference, I may be looking wrong but I don't notice huge difference
I know oled is great but my iphone has oled screen and my monitor has VA and I don't see much of a difference and if it was at least similar price and not that led is 300$ and oled is 1000$
Glossy screens when? That is something keeping me from diving in.
Only problem with oled is poor warranty only 2 years is way too short for the price you have to pay.
That's because 2 years is about when you can expect burn in to be extremely noticeable.
Liked and subbed , will have to check out some more of your channel . I’m an old person ,62 , but I would still like to build another gaming machine someday . I seriously thought I’d die of old age before oled was a thing with computer monitors. Great seeing options out there , and hopefully more in the future
Hey OP great video, would you say this comparison still stands since they have both had a firmware update to fix some of the issues you've mentioned.
i cant wait for 4k 32 inch OLED monitors hitting the market, till then i remain patient :)
To me IPS still looks great and performs great, just not as well in dark environments. IPS daytime. OLED nighttime. 😆. Overall I still think MiniLed is the superior technology for now. OLED will be best when price comes down and burn-in is non existent.
Burn-in nonexistent? That's never.
I mainly use headphones, but it's nice to use the monitor's speakers if they offer decent performance, and it's less stuff to plug in.
no problem to buy small acoustics for PC
dont let the watts deceive you
Watts have nothing to do with actual sound quality and no monitor has good speakers.
Masterful video. Truly amazing work.
You make a good point about brightness & the effect it can have on your eyes, after a long weekend of gaming my eyes are burning.
Over the many years i have turned down the effects & brightness in games, to give my eyes a little comfort.
Thank you for this!
Legit just cancelled my pre-order of the 360hz Asus to the OLED (even though the OLED was $200 more here in Australia) your gaming style is exactly like mine and this really helped me decide
If you can handel the posibility that your display coud be tost after a year or 2
@@xythiera7255 ended up selling the OLED and buying the 360hz especially with ULMB 2
Man I can’t wait for microled to become mainstream and affordable. That’s ultimately the end goal.
I've been waiting so long I forgot about micro led. Team oled or qled for now. Can't go back to flat images.
PG27AQN uses DSC (Display Stream Compression), which above 240Hz at 1440p makes it count as "2 monitors" on NVIDIA cards. Can you test if PG27AQN works at 360Hz with 2 more monitors connected, all on DisplayPort outputs?
yes, i can confirm this.
@@Masoch1st What do you use? NVIDIA's article focuses on 2 DSC devices, showing how they can't plug 3rd one.
