Hello! I live close to Bryan also, there are several great places to fish within a short distance, Lake somerville is great, we have the brazos and navasota rivers, it's pretty nice! Good luck and enjoy your new adventure!
Similar circumstance for me today. I caught about a dozen nice sized shad and used them on my catfish rods. I caught 3 catfish that totaled 13 pounds first and then hooked up to a 20 inch hybrid bass. There was a big Gasper Goo after the hybrid. I never know what to do with them, I've heard Cajuns have a great recipe for them.

Over heared you can pressure cook Casper goo, but I’ve never tired it.

When I reel in sandbass sometimes I see big catfish chasing em, too bad you can't use em as live bait.

That was at the Spillway of Lake Waco. Just follow the road down to the river and there is a kayak launch area, you will recognize it when you see it.
