  • The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 is almost identical to the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4. It’s a slim & light mobile workstation with Intel Core i7, i9 or Xeon CPUs and up to NVIDIA RTX A5000 / RTX 3080 16GB graphics. Thanks to our video’s sponsor- Trend Micro's Premium Security Suite offers complete device and identity protection for up to 10 devices. Check it out here: bit.ly/3JhBC7l and use code LISA10 (case sensitive) for 10% off your purchase! With more powerful GPU options, the ThinkPad P1 has vapor chamber cooling, allowing for more performance than average from a 1.8kg / 4 lb. portable PC. It has a 16” 16:10 aspect ratio display in QHD or 4K resolution with wide gamut for content creation. Wi-Fi 6E, a 1080p webcam and a fingerprint scanner are standard. It has 2 RAM slots for upgradability and optional 4G and 5G WWAN on some models. #trendmicro #premiumsecuritysuite

I got the A2000 + 11800H, and got 2 nvme slots. It's fixed almost everything on my wishlist from the previous generation. 16:10. Wide color gamut display, larger trackpad, better speakers. Battery life could be better, and speaker can still catch up to MBP.

Put in an order after thinking for a while for the P1 Gen 4 (i7, A4000) to replace my existing Gen 3. I love my Gen 3 (i7, 64Gb, T2000) although I cheaped out on the FHD screen and really need more real estate when working remote (most of the time its docked to a 4K monitor). Looking forward to the 4K+ touch panel, should make photoshop and AutoCAD a bit nicer to use when working in hotels etc. A4000 should allow for some gaming too.

Repasted it which dropped a couple of degrees but turns out it draws air through the keyboard now it sits 50oC at idle.
Keyboard is certainly shallower than the P3 although still feels great compared to Macs.

@@bradhaines3142 I am not sure if the x1e gen 5 / p1 gen 5 will have the option to opt out of the nvidia card. Having the system with only the 12gen intel will probably benefit the cpu of running at maximum power since there is no need to cool down an nvidia chip. The intel 12th gen has also good graphics to counter the lack of a dedicated graphic card. But from current leaks, I have the impression that lenovo might give this option for this generation like past generations.

BTW - I also love my Lenovo Legion 5 (with a Ryzen 7 4800H). I find myself using this most of the time now - good battery life, excellent keyboard, and 144Hz refresh rate. Also has a great microphone for video conferencing, and the speakers are okay (not great, just "acceptable"). I'm not thinking about getting the Legion 5 Pro (2022 AMD model - gen 7).

    • @emilemouannes2236
      @emilemouannes2236 2 года назад +10

@@mobiletechreview There is no nvidia optimus (the driver that switches from igpu to dgpu) under linux that works seamlessly like windows. Switching from the intel graphics to nvidia requires a system restart under linux. On the p1 or x1e and most systems, the intel gpu is wired directly to the internal display, whereas the nvidia one is wired to all the external displays ports (display port thru usb-c and hdmi in order to benefit from high frame rate and gsync). So if the linux system is running under intel gpu , you will lose the capability to connect to external displays because the external ports are connected to the nvidia chip which is not enabled. Under linux, in order to solve this, you will need to enter the BIOS and then enable the MUX switch to physically rewire the internal display to the nvidia, and then boot the system using "only" the nvidia card. This however, will make the system less power efficient and will disable the intel gpu. Unfortunately, there is no MUX to rewire the intel gpu to connect to all the internal monitor and the external ports. So the p1 and x1e that are ordered without the nvidia will have the intel gpu connected to both the internal monitor and external monitor ports thus removing the hassle of graphics switching. There are some workarounds...

Keyboard is not good at all. I replaced all keycaps with p14s g2 keycaps to make it barely useable. A lot of people focus on key travel, but the biggest problem I found with the keyboard is that the keys themselves feel flimsy, they are flatter -less concave , and have a punchy feel to them and those changes make the keyboard awful! Definitely not the classic keyboard feel!

VERY idsappointed that the wifi slot is NOT upgradable as its why you would buy a Thinkpad.
Please confirm it wont have SPYWARE on the chip that marrs the Z series laptops? This makes it impossible to use in Enterprise due to national security issues and data protection issues.....Is Thinkpad really an actor for the declining hardware bulleying by Microsoft under the sham certification scheme?
As the world moves to linux professionals want linux and AMD.Not monopolies from MS and Intel.

I bought p1 gen4 rtx3080 gpu and together with thunderbolt 4 workstation dock. I am very disappointed with the laptop and the dock. The laptop in the beginning was a fan noise factory, only resolved with firmware upgrades, but still fan is always on and noisy. the technical Support is slow and not helpful.the technical support only proposes to return the device for repair, i can not even find a contact email to ask how to replace the dock with higher power output. The Dockstation is not powerful enough to charge the laptop, the battery level decreases even while the original charger is connected to the laptop. Lenovo? no! never again!

Neat, but my MBP 16“ is still better in almost every way, minus gaming and certain 3D apps.

The P1 series have been a huge let down for me.
I've been an avid Thinkpad user. I use them for serious stuff like CAD and simulations. They run hot. This thing is not a true Thinkpad. I call it the "FriedPad". I feel like I could start a business selling fried eggs at the coffee shop where I use it, and I'd make a killing selling "EggPads".
The top gets blazing hot. Same with the keyboard. Those nuclear radioactive powered Intel procs Lenovo decided to put in this thing. What's your obsession with Intel? How much money did Intel give you to put their pizza oven cookers in it? It's an engineering shame. How do you mess up something as basic as how to cool a FriedPad?
It's noisy. When the fans are on full throttle, it's like the Concorde on afterburner mode. Only that the Concorde could actually achieve something! This thing can't even take off, let alone open a program quickly. It lags constantly.
At least the chiks think I have a hot laptop. And they get impressed when they see flames coming off the vents, not knowing it's slower than their cheap Walmart Chromebook.
It's also slower than my old Thinkpad W530 workstation, but hey the P1 boasts a 12 or a 16 thread CPU! Right? But no, the old trusty W530 that was released several years ago beats this "modern" laptop around with ease. Then it kicks it again with impunity when it's sitting on the floor desperately crying for help, because it can't open a jpeg image. Give me a break Lenovo! What good is a fast CPU if it performs so slow to do ordinary things because you have to throttle it down in order for it not to cook itself?
And remind me how much you want Lenovo, for this FriedPad? $5k something? I could get a several P50-P52s workstations that would perform twice as fast as this thing, thanks to a better cooling design.
The P1 wins when it comes to rendering and simulations, and that's it. Plus having a modern GPU. But for CPU usage, don't think for a moment it's going to be a huge difference against an old i7 3740QM. That's the CPU that came in my old Thinkpad. I can upgrade to the extreme version and I feel confident it would slap the P1.
The other thing that annoys me. The fragility. It's like a princess who's constantly breaking down crying for whatever reason. You can't take this thing outside on the elements, as the chances of breaking apart will increment exponentially. You have to treat it with gloves. This is a computer for the royalty. It's only for looks and appearances.
I have to wipe it often because the thing likes to attract dust and fingerprints and spyware thanks to Wokewindows. Get back to work Lenovo.

This computer is so stupid and with no quality checks before selling to customers! I have color peeling off from keyboard on 3 keys, two BSoD, no way to turn computer off in BSoD (power button not responding), front most USB-A port is unreliable and fails large file copies to externa drive, computer running HOT in sleepmode (leds fading), bluetooth freezes every other second, computer sometimes loops every other minute with chimes like it is unplugging usb, rolling back to bios 1.14 due to dead usb-c ports, white spot in display...
AND THE WORST PART IS THAT LENOVO WONT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TO REPLACE IT!
Blaiming the customer because it is "cosmetics" and doesn't cover by warranty, the customer has to pay!!
Can only state lenovo is mafia BLACK MAILING its customers, sending out broken computers and only accept repair if the costumer pays even more!!
I have been trying for over 4 months to get a replacement unit or repair, it was hard to even get an answer from the support! Eventually got an email to global pr at lenovo who send me to EMEA team, well they are only wasting my time blaming me for the "cosmetic" faults....

    Disaster!!
Can't get any support! Emails but never gets an answer anywhere! There is no phone number anywhere!
Have so many awful problems with my P1 Gen4 so it's embarrassing! I now hate my brand new computer due to all the problems!
Obvious quality problems, color missing on keyboard buttons, fans jerking, white spot on the screen, battery life max 4h, longer battery life on macbook 15 "from 2011, bios updates that kill usb-c / TB4 ports, bluetooth problems, fan problems, sleep mode don't work properly (hot even though led is fading), usb-chime sounds al the time. Fresh windows 10 install with all drivers updated.
    Catastrophically Embarrassing!
