- Happy Thanksgiving! I found this cheese at the dollar store and was shocked by the price of $48. Tastee cheese is a Jamaican favorite often paired with spice bun, so let's give it a taste. Big thanks for Kissani for sending the bun. 🧡

As a Jamaican I can confirm that not even us can properly get the cheese out of the can
As an adult I finally realised you have to open it both ends then push it through
@@ameekasoar lol i came here to say just that. That's how we used to open it in the 80s inna jamdown!
After you cut both ends you gotta roll it. After you roll it, it pretty much just falls out.
Only shop keepers lol
Right? You know how many trips to emergency happen at Easter because of that damn cheese? 🤣🇯🇲
🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 As a Jamaican this made me happy😂.I still wanna see Emmy make Spice bun from scratch tho.
Omg I felt the same wayyyyyy!!!
That would be the greatest day for every Jamaican who’s subbed to channel.
Same. 🇯🇲 And proud
Me too! I love her and it warmed my heart
Me tooooo
Emmy's pronunciation of bulla is so cute... "boola" we say it like bull-ah. I love to see other people enjoying our food. 💚💛🖤
Cute? That shit was giving me a headache lol
😂😂 as a Trini 🇹🇹 we know what dat means
@@EmpressAshe lol
Don't put the two meanings together
Every Jamaican knows the struggle of getting Tastee cheese out of that can when Easter comes around lol. I'm glad whenever Jamaican cuisine is introduced to new people.
It looks like it tastes good! I'm definitely going to keep my eyes open for some of that cheese!!
@@hollypierce3076 you can get it at Walmart but in smaller size. :)
It looks so good!
The day I discovered Jamaican porridge was a very, very good day! So warm and comforting.
@@belantww Cornmeal porridge is the best. Love it in the morning
As a Jamaican I gotta say I'm happy to see that you fell down the rabbit hole on this 1. Glad you enjoyed our snacks. When Americans started eating avocado on toast I was like...OH REALLY?!...I've been eating it on bulla all my life.
True🙌🏾
Why did I not relate bulla & avocado to avocado on toast..?!? 🤯 still will never eat avocado on toast tho! But bulla & avocado yummy..! 😋
That cheese for 48 sounds about right
My girl, wah nice like fresh hard dough bread with avocado, aka pear?!?! My girl, nuttin nuh nice mi suh!🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲Yawd tingz.
There's an episode of Atlanta that I think you'll find interesting about Jollof rice and food trucks..lol🤣🤣
Jamaican here! Can't say how I excited I got when I saw the thumbnail! Love bun and cheese!
Sometimes you go to the dollar store for chips and wind up with a 5lb. can of cheese. It happens.
all. the. time.
Loved this video Emmy.
A bit of history behind the making of the spiced bun - the concept of an Easter bun/hot cross bun was introduced to Jamaica by the English, when they colonised the island (around the 1600s). However, Jamaicans added their own twist to the recipe by using molasses instead of honey, and adding spices and dried fruits.
Alongside the hot cross buns, the nursery rhyme was also introduced:
Hot cross buns!, Hot cross buns!
One a penny, two a penny, Hot cross buns!
If you have no daughters, Give them to your sons.
One a penny two a penny, Hot cross buns!
Nowadays, the rhyme is mostly sung by older Jamaicans, as it was once used by peddlers to sell the buns.
Glad you enjoyed this taste test :)
Interesting. Thanks
Thanks for sharing!
Hot cross buns are very popular in Australia too...some are spiced with or without fruit, some have chocolate chips and some have apple cinnamon. That song you mentioned is also sung (mainly to kids) in Australia too and is pretty common.
Lol I thought everyone knew hot cross buns!
As a British Jamaican this made me smile. Hot cross buns, while similar in spices has a different texture. I enjoy both at Easter.
This made me so happy as a Jamaican I get so excited when other cultures try our cuisine. This right here is a staple in every jamaican home during Easter. Thanks for sharing Emmy 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
I'm Jamaican and I've been watching your videos for yeaaars (from when you used to make popin cookin videos) and this made me very happy lol
You should try flattening and toasting the slices of bun and then adding cheese, it tastes a lot more caramelized and has more depth
I usually toast the bulla cakes first also and eat it with cheese, butter, pear or even patty
So wait deh why me never hear bout this one before, me ago try that today lol
Woiiiiii! Haffi toast har yes!
I forgot about the popin cookin videos. We got some for our kids after seeing some of those. ❤
I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing a video on this Jamaican staple. It's delicious, and so versatile! I love it in a cheese omelette, although the melting temperature is a bit higher. But as a Marine, I love watching your MRE videos, which is how I discovered your channel. Thanks for always showing class and respect to differentiating cultures. Big up!
P.S. -- $48 for that big tin of cheese is actually not bad at all.
I'm very excited for this one as a jamaican subscriber !!!!!!!!
I thought I was the only one😭✋
something Jamaican that isn't jerk chicken or beef patties, well dang. Nice! This threw me down a whole new rabbit hole of Jamaican food. Going through the comments and stuff I've read just by looking up boula does make me realize a lot of tropical and equatorial nations all around share food ideas to a degree (my own family is Indonesian and I see some similar stuff here), we just execute them differently.
Bulla
There’s a lot more!😅
As a kid I look forward to Easter because of the bun and cheese
The amount of whiplash I had seeing Emmy eat Tastee Cheese and Bulla in the thumbnail.. There's a reason why we only buy the cheese for Christmas and Easter, it's expensive! 😭While you're at it you should try Sorrel and Jamaican black fruit cake next for Christmas!
As a Jamaican this makes me happy 🇯🇲🇯🇲
Big up all the Jamaicans watching emmymade! Love from uk
🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲I’m a Jamaican culinary student and at home I make a cheese sauce with tastee cheese I usually do a little bit of roux lots of milk and I melt it on high heat stirring constantly. I obviously use a large grater to grate the cheese or else it will take forever to melt. And I season it with lots of black pepper and chopped pepper like pickled Jalapeños and it’s delicious in macaroni dishes and even just on bread as a spread and in sandwiches. I eat it with chips and it’s delicious. The recipe is easy and it’s dependent on your preference of thickness.
You should make a video of this
WOW Next time I make Mac N Cheese I have to try use Tastee cheese
@@TheClickClick it is best not to use it for things like that in my opinion
Your pasta might burn before the cheese melts
@Jasmine Spencer that was my thought as well, but I will try and see what is the resulting use multiple cheese in my M&C. I always bake so it should be ok
I just ate lunch and now I'm hungry again 😭
I love seeing new people trying foods from my culture. I’m glad that you enjoyed. If you ever want to make a bun yourself in the future (they’re not that easy to come by outside of the Easter season), here’s some tips for those hard-to-find ingredients you mentioned.
1. For the stout, Dragon’s Stout is definitely hard to find in the states. My mom typically uses Guinness stout instead, which is a great alternative.
2. Browning can be found in Walmart sometimes, depending on how extensive your local Walmart’s International aisle is. If you can’t find it, I recently found that that it is relatively simple to make at home. Just caramelize some brown sugar, add in some boiling water, and salt, and there you go.
I'm definitely laughing... at myself. You're teaching me how to open this can. In all my Jamaican life, I have never opened both sides of that can. I've never read the instructions on the can. I had no idea that was there... 😄. This explains why I always disliked opening the can. It was so difficult. I've learnt something. I will definitely do that going forward. It looks like you were incidentally doing this at one point but just a tip... rolling the can to try to get it off the sides of the can should help immensely. I'm drooling watching you eat that bun and cheese. The way you say "boola" (bulla) has me giggling to myself. Cut the rest of that cheese and store it in cling film. There's a smaller size as well.
😂😂
Mi fi tell yuh 😭
Yes 😭 recently discovered those directions I was bamboozled!
It's crazy that they sell something that's $48 dollars at the Dollar Store 😂
She said this was purchased at The Dollar Zone. Apparently it’s not like what we think of like the Dollar Tree or Dollar General.
it's a dollar per pound... i'll allow it.
That can weighs 48 pounds?? 😱
@@winterburden point taken, i let a decimal slip. good thing i'm a broadcast engineer instead of a rocket surgeon at nasa, yeah?
@@chrissandoval7675 But the can doesn’t weigh 48 pounds
Each time I watch you taste anything the first thing comes to my mind is "she really understands flavour".
It really looks like you're doing a detailed analysis of flavour and texture.
That’s why I appreciate her reviews, she tells me exactly what I want to know about the eating experience and she’s very articulate and well spoken. You can tell she truly loves food and cares to take the time to explain things in detail.
As a Jamaican I’m pleased that you gave a very true and accurate description and explanation of our National treats in terms of the taste and textures 👏🏼👏🏼
Yes, I truly appreciate her for that. She did not butcher the description at all. She was CORRECT in everything. I must say though, that bun looks a little dry. LOL. When they are like that, I put them in the microwave for 20/30 seconds. LOL
I'm obsessed with that cheese. It tastes like non other. So much flavor and it goes perfectly with sweets.
It's the best cheese in the entire world
I was happy to see Emmy posted a video today, she brought a smile to my sad lonely thanksgiving. Hugs to everyone who spent the day alone 🙏🤗
Happy Thanksgiving! ❤️ thankful for your presence !
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with some yummy food & pie!!!🍗😊🥧
Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you had great food. Just you are worth it.
@@Bke14151 thank you for the kind comments I appreciate that
@@-HazexD thank you for taking time to comment 😉
Everytime I see someone appreciating something Jamaican I smile with pride, lol. I grinned so much when I saw the pear and bulla, she buss yah now. I enjoyed this video. 😊
I LOOOOOVE spiced bun and cheese.
I lived near a Jamaican restaurant in Germantown section of Philadelphia and got introduced to Jamaican food there. Being vegetarian, the Jamaican spot became one of my favorite takeout go tos.
I’m so happy that Emmy tried this, I hope she tries more Caribbean food!
You can use Guinness instead of Dragon Stout. I definitely enjoyed this. I love seeing our food get recognized and enjoyed. As for the cheese, aluminum foil will keep it soft in the refrigerator. Donate the rest to a Jamaican near you lol 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲
Guinness isn't dark. She can use Malta sold in supermarket. Or any dark stout.
Also browning is just burnt & melted sugar. She could make that herself.
I agree that Guinness is a great substitute. I make my own Easter bun and that is what I use.
*screaming in jamaican* 🇯🇲 🇯🇲🤞🏽i have been watching you since elementary school (grade 6) soooo happy & glad to see you enjoy that ❤️
Raison bread and cheddar cheese is also a thing of beauty.
Yes a combo that I also love
It’s very traditional in England to have cheese with fruitcake, especially in Yorkshire and other northern counties. Christmas cake is best full of brandy and dried fruit eaten with very sharp Cheddar cheese and of course, a nice hot cup of Yorkshire tea. Delicious!
Emmy you’re a great food descriptor. As a Jamaican I’m always weary of people, trying and describing or food, because most of the “Jamaican food“ that people try outside of Jamaica is not actually our food. So many people that think they have had Jamaican food actually haven’t. You described this really really well not just the flavors but the textures too.
Her palette is excellent. She picked up on the flavours correctly. I'm surprised.
If you are feeling adventurous enough to make bun from scratch:
• Sub out Dragon Stout for Guinness - it has a similar enough flavour profile
• Browning is dark, caramelized sugar. Dark almost to the point of burning it. Took me months to master the technique but it adds colour and depth of flavour to meats and dark cakes
As a Jamaican that’s been watching you for years…this made me so happy to see 😊😊😊.
You can still buy spiced bun loaf in the UK. We tend to eat it toasted and buttered. 🙂 Also, in the north of England, we eat Wensleydale cheese with Christmas cake, which is a similar sweet/salty combination.
down south its not unusual to eat fruit cake with mild cheddar or strongercheddar with an apple
God, I love Wensleydale cheese! Heaven!
Yes! Looooove Christmas cake with cheese. Wensleydale is beautiful cheese
In Australia we eat a lot of that spiced fruit bread too, it's great toasted with honey. I'd love to try it with cheese!
How good is raisin toast!
As a Jamaican, all I have to say is BIG UP YU SELF!! I loved this.
It didn’t seem like she liked them much, but I am happy to see you put Jamaican food on this platform outside of the typical jerk chicken and oxtail.
As a Vincentian. I remember buying this cheese at the shop as a kid. It taste so good.
The more Jamaican I meet and the more I learn about Jamaica the more I like it
We appreciate Emmy for all her hard work and effort on this channel. Keep up the good work.
I was about to recommend Cougar Gold from WSU. Fantastic cheese. I love the Tastee cheese too, I vacuum seal half pound chunks to keep it from going bad. Cheese and Bun are a wonderful Jamaican treat. I’m a Floridian, so we get lots of Caribbean food.
I love this cheese soooo much! I'm from The Bahamas and my mother is Jamaican and she introduced our family to all the Jamaican goodies. I usually buy the water crackers and a slice of this cheese (cause its really really expensive here) and just savor it . Its just so creamy, I need to buy a slice when I go home.🤤🤤
Literally just went to the Jamaican market by my house and got some of that cheese yesterday. So I could have it as a treat during Thanksgiving weekend, lol. It's one of my favorite things on the planet but it's expensive so I don't have it often. The cans that we usually get are half that height though. 🤔 My mom goes for the bullah, but I'm definitely Team Bun. Love it!!!
Sorry I with your mother on team bullah 🤭
Next time try Boula with Jamaican avocado , the avocado is sweeter and softer. Love your channel
Right! Man, I hate those Haas avocados.
Bulla
Bulla
Bulla. Bredda, it name Bulla🤦🏿♀️
@@Sakuura141 I was pronouncing it how she said it. Thanks
That must be the most expensive item in the dollar store. Hope you do a follow-up video on how you used the approximately four and a half pounds of the cheese.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to ALL.
I was definitely curious what would be done with the rest of that cheese!!
Just to add to your knowledge, here in the north of England it’s very common especially around the Christmas holidays to be offered a piece of a strong cheese on top of a slice of very heavily fruited Christmas cake. And remember that the fruit in the cake is dried and soaked with alcohol before cooking then the cake gets pierced and more alcohol added several times after baking. Interestingly most of the spices incorporated in the cake are originally imported from the West Indies, such as ginger, mace, nutmeg and the oils of various citrus fruits.
Yes lots of cross cultural pollination. I've often thought Jamaican patties are a spicier, punchier version of the Cornish pastie, minus the root veg of course. But then, many regions of the world has some version of minced meat in a pastry casing. Funny that.
😋
Sounds so yummy and familiar. My great gran and my gran her daughter used to start in September every year and make rum or brandy soaked fruit cake. They were from Germany.
They had so many types of fruits and candied bits and peels and nuts.
I know that a few different types of raisins were soaked in a brandy sugar syrup for a few days before everything went together.
And how they carefully open the wrapped and tinned fruitcakes once a week to soak a bit more brandy sugar syrup in.
I do know they used a dark rum once as I think my grandpa found a good deal in it.
You'd think it would be terrible sweet/alcohol tasting but by the time Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled around and you opened and cut it it was not alcoholic at all. It just tasted wonderful.
I do remember my dad eating it with his really old cheddar(smelled like feet to me )
I love making Mac and cheese with Tastee’s cheese. It’s the best. I’m ecstatic whenever I see people eating and enjoying our food. I know my opinion is severely skewed, but yawd food is the best food in the world. #Jamaican and proud!🇯🇲
I know every fan of Jamaican decent stopped and clicked the video immediately. I know I did!!😂🤣
Y’all Jamaicans in here are so adorable 🥰 Blushing over the snacks 🤣😂🤣😂
I knew this day would come. And Emmy's description of one of my favorites is gracefully done. Wait, until she tries Jamaican raisin bread. She can use some of the cheese with it. You can grate the cheese to Mac an cheese recipe. Or maybe a spaghetti sauce dish. The possibility is endless with Tastes cheese.
Hi Emmy. Browning is bottled caramelised sugar, made with: caramel, water, modified food starch and sodium benzoate. However, we make it at home by burning sugar and adding the water to cause it to steam up and become the browning liquid. I hope that is helpful. 😁🇧🇧🇧🇧
yes,...Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad
I was making mac and cheese one day and run out of velveeta.. there was a can of tastee cheese hanging around in my pantry lol had to use for my mac and cheese and the kids loved it!!!!!!
I can't stop laughing..this jamaican cheese is SO EXPENSIVE
That first slice out the can is always a struggle but undoubtedly worth it! 🇯🇲🧀
Even with other cheeses available, we'll always pick Tastee 😂
My Jamaican 🇯🇲 heart can't. I'm so happy!! Can't wait to watch the rest of the video
Wow, that is a very cool history behind a can of cheese.... it's amazing how much we pass by and never know the history. Thank you!
The fact that you still bought the $48 cheese is blowing my mind. I would've been like, oh I'm sorry, I thought this was the DOLLAR store. 🤣 I'm gonna have to put this back.
Exactly. :)
Emmy isn't poor
It's food and she has a food channel
If you don't know, you don't know. You should see how much it is in Jamaica! Lol
@@poisonivy1616 I don't assume she is. I don't consider myself poor and I just wouldn't pay $48 for canned cheese.
bulla cake and pear, a powerful duo ❤️🤞🏽🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Your food taste descriptions are chef's kiss 👌
seriously, i feel like i know exactly how the things she tries taste without ever having tried them myself
I love bulla. I slice it and grill it under wat u guys call ur broiler. Just gently brown it then I butter it. Mmmmm! Once u’ve done that u can put strawberry jam/jelly with ur cheese. Grilling it changes the texture of the bulla cake and it becomes crunchier from the sugars. Nice cup of English tea, perfect and I’m Cypriot born in England 🏴 with great Jamaican friends. U can flufernutter it too or salami it xx
Not me screeching “ SHE GOT BULLA BREAD” 😂 gwon Emmy!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Haha I was too excited 😆 Bullaaaa cakeeeee!!!!
Emmy is a treasure. I grew up eating bun and cheese as a cheap go to bite to fill my belly. So glad to see her covering this!
Grew up in Jamaica, my siblings and I always had bun and cheese for Easter with tastee cheese. It’s been so long 😊 🇯🇲. I also miss cheese patty with coco bread for the Tastee’s patty place

The bulla and bun looked really dry in this video. Next time try to get the HTB spice bun OR National bun;those brands are more moist and tasty.😊
Definitely agree
Never heard of that brand probably made in the US
Yes Jasmine chines brand not our jamaica cheese dat.
I bet it tasted differently
Thank you for enjoying my culture!!! im really happy you liked everything but, also that you were respectful.
I'm jamaican an generally we wouldnt eat bun and cheese without spreading some butter on the bun first 👍🏾
Thank you. We also put a little salt on the pear too.
YES EMMY I'm so happy to see parts of my culture appreciated!
I normally add butter to add moisture! Also always try to get fresh bun or bulla that are not dry.
I used to wait for my mother to bring this back from her trip to Jamaica. I was addicted. I never ate it with bun, although it is a custom, especially around Easter.
I love Bun and cheese I'm British African but grew up around Jamaicans. True say if I knew the cheese came from a can I might not love it as much. What you don't know won't hurt you lol 😂 Big up Jamaica 🇯🇲 not one piece of food I've tried and didn't like. Mi yam everything 😂

This cheese with crackers & stewed tamarind or goose berries is absolutely delicious! The sweet & the salt are pure heaven!
As a Jamaican I can say we all have issues getting the cheese out the tin. This is s struggle

The bun ND cheese is even better when you microwave it for a few seconds so creamy and gets really Moist 😋
Mmm...🔥
Haha, that's how I eat it. Especially buns that are dry like the one she has looks. I prefer the moist ones though.
Love learning about these Jamaican favorites!
