    I went to Amazon. What you can't see easily is that there is a carbon filter in the spigot that filters the last bits of stuff. So it is best to use the powder AND the bag to get the cleanest water. And it is a great idea. Definitely going in my camping gear.

    • @BenChurchill76
      @BenChurchill76 Месяц назад +7

      Oh, that's why the water came out clear when she poured it from the bag! So, there's a further step, and probably better using this bag than just using a bucket.

    • @FirstLast-gw5mg

      The powdered activated carbon ("PAC" for short) in the filter also aids in removal of taste/odor compounds.

      Carbon filter also may trap some of the chemical hazards. But she’s pretty unwise to drink straight as it doesn’t get 100% of the pathogens; should still boil it

    • @FirstLast-gw5mg
      @FirstLast-gw5mg Месяц назад +1

      @@darthmicrobius Yes, the fact that she could not sense any chlorine worries me. I think that all of the chlorine probably reacted with the gunk and it did not achieve effective disinfection. That water may have been way too dirty for the kit and should have been allowed to settle for a while to remove the worst of it before treatment.
      I really wish she'd ordered some chlorine test strips to check the chlorine residual level, as I suspect there was none left. I wouldn't have drank it.

    We use chalk candles and ceramic pots here in Rwanda. Anything that involves buying sachets wouldn't be useful in countries where supply chains are unreliable. Half the year you probably wouldn’t be able to get the powder. Pots and chalk candles are also very easy to clean. Though it's probably best to take water from the top of the stream rather than dredging the mud. As an experiment, it's fun, but for long-term health, probably go for the cleanest-looking water you can find. Also, when it comes out of a chalk or pot filter, the water is absolutely clear 😊

    Another helpful hint: You can buy the powdered chlorine (food-grade calcium hypochlorite) and use non chemical ways to filter the solids for a much safer and environmentally friendly way to filter water. Ferric Sulfate stains, is corrosive and can cause gastrointestinal problems for some. Chlorine, if you wait the 20 additional minutes, is totally safe and likely the best affordable purifier to make safe drinking water. It kills bacteria, viruses etc. and the powdered form is shelf stable (some say indefinitely). The packets you have need to be used in 3 years.

      The purpose of chlorine is to make boiling unnecessary. However the fact that she could not taste it is a huge red flag in my opinion. Chlorine test strips are super cheap. I would have tested it if it did not smell at all like chlorine.

      @@thegirlwitheeyes1232 If my nose did not assure me of the presence of chlorine, would not blindly trust the company, much less Google, to tell me that the pouch contained the right amount of chlorine, that it still had the proper potency, _and_ that I didn't somehow fuck up and use the wrong amount of water.
      When you add chlorine to water, the chlorine reacts with organic material: rotting leaves, roots, microbes that could make you sick. If there is so much filth in the water that the chlorine is completely used up, the water would _not_ be safe to drink. The fact that some chlorine remains at the end is the guarantee that enough was added. (I would encourage you to google "chlorine demand" and "chlorine residual".)
      In fact... in my professional opinion, I would not attempt to treat water that was so muddy. Simply letting it settle for a few minutes in that 5 gallon bucket would have removed the worst of the silt. Pre-settling the water and _then_ pouring the clearer water into the bag and treating it with the chemicals would have been much safer in my opinion. It would also help prevent the formation of DBPs, disinfection byproducts, which the EPA is increasingly beginning to regulate (google "epa dbp rule"). Drinking chlorinated dead stuff turns out to not be very healthy. Better than live e-coli, but still not healthy!
      I'm not going to dox myself to you, but I know a bit about the chemistry involved.

    We tested this powder for a lab activity in one of my environmental health classes and saw there was still some E. coli remaining in the water.. Although the water looks and smells clear, it can still have pathogens harmful to your health. If you really want to be safe I would recommend putting the water to a rolling boil afterwards to be sure you're killing off the pathogens. (or just drink from tap that has gone through extensive filtration process lol) If you're really resource strapped (ex: stranded in middle of woods) and there's no other option than I would say go for it, but I wouldn't recommend for average person in their home.

      How could you have completed a lab without recognizing that the disinfecting agent is a standard bleaching compound known as calcium hypochlorite? This common chemical, with centuries of use and proven experimental results, is widely acknowledged for its effectiveness in disinfecting drinking water and fulfilling other sanitation requirements. Your professor should have emphasized that any residual E. coli in your testing sample was likely due to personal lab techniques, rather than indicating a fundamental flaw in our understanding of calcium hypochlorite. Especially considering this was a standard environmental health class, not a laboratory focused on novel inorganic chemistry experimentation.
      Is it possible that in this lab, you only utilized a flocculant without the disinfectant calcium hypochlorite included in this product? Thus illustrating that while the flocculant may visually improve water quality, it remains contaminated with bacteria until treated with a disinfectant like calcium hypochlorite. This exploration of water treatment processes necessary for ensuring safe drinking water aligns well with the curriculum of an environmental health class.

    My brother and I saw 2 different possums died. One was walking railroad with dogs and the other was down a rock road behind our town school where FFA barn is and road end at wasted treatments plant. I can tell you wasted treatments is so small that no one work there. They just come by to check on it. Thats small town for you.

    Emmy, do you know how to knit? Because between that, the possum video, and all your research about food in times of scarcity, you'd be a fantastic person to have around after the apocalypse!

    It has a second filter in the dispenser spout which removes that last bit of yellow left in the bag.

      The filter contains powdered activated carbon, so in addition to removing fine particulate it will theoretically also help remove taste/odor.

    I'd go with the LifeStraw myself, just a tube you can throw in your pocket or a bag and shlurp up water from puddles, ponds, rivers and canals without having to wait for a disinfectant & flocculant to do its' thing, well worth looking into for comparison... :)
