A minute in and would like to mention that I put my chicken bones for stock in a crockpot for 2-full days on low..once done the bones will come out structured but when you put pressure on them they will mush between your fingers. I then just make a paste, dehydrate then powder..hth.

There's a lot of great comments here, after boiling and drying the bones should be a bit brittle. If you have a mortle and pestle you could break up the bones a bit before putting them into the blender then sift out the bones. Lastly, you could do what Darcy from The Purposeful Pantry to make it more shelf stable and that is bake it on a low oven for a couple hours to make sure all the moisture is out, she calls it conditioning. I really like your content and adventures.

u do not need to dyhidrate them, just put them in the oven for 1/2 hour or so at medium temp...(watch them often and turn them often) , let them cool down and then pulverize them with ur hands, rock, blender...voila. the cooking time depends in how thick the bones are and i highly recommend to smash the thick bones so the "meat" inside the bones will dry faster. It just experimentation and using the oven is much faster.

I think you might find it easier on your blender if you toss in the chicken bones when you are finished your stock. They will be wet and should be quite soft. Voila! Bone meal mush. Then dehydrate it. Little more difficult with beef and pork bones. I have put those into the pressure cooker (after the initial stock making) after washing them off and then pressure cooking them for another few hours. Then grinding them, and if necessary, dehydrating.

Borage is both edible and medicinal..I use the borage flowers to put in my husband’s salads they taste like cucumber. Just know that once they seed even though they are a annual they will come back all over the place the following year..

This plant was $5.00 for 1-plant years ago in my area to buy. I had had some borage come up on its own years ago but with the drought they all died. I used the Winter Sowing method to grow them, still have 2-plants left in the container figuring out where to plant them and by golly when I saw them a few days later they have developed flowers..in the milk gallon container..lol..nature is so amazing.

I have a bag in the freezer for bones. When I get a big batch I pressure cook them. That makes them extremely soft.

I have found here in South Mississippi. That bonemeal works best if you put it in the hole when you plant your vegetables, especially tomatoes. Bonemeal takes a little time to break down and about several weeks. Your plants will get a boost from the bone. Enjoy your videos.

A lot of great comments! Have you had trouble with animals digging at your plants since you put the bone meal at the base of your plants? I do! Basil is awesome for tomato plants as well, to keep the hornworms away! Check out Next Level Gardening.
I have learned through Sally Fallon Morell (the broth queen), that you can make a lot more chicken broth from those same bones. This goes for all meats. After you drain your first batch of broth, add water and maybe some more fresh veggies and herbs and do it all over again. DON'T FORGET TO ADD THE VINEGAR! It pulls all the goodness from the bones and softens them up! I have done it 3 times but she say you can do it many, many times. I'm just tired of it by then. 😉
The broth gets weaker each time but that broth can be used for casseroles and/or add ins. Save the first batch for soups! She also mentions to blend your bones when they are still wet to make a paste that you can freeze and use in recipies. You can dehydrate that too for your garden. She is very informative. And to really get the broth to gel up......add the chicken feet and head! I'm not quite there yet. 😂 Hope this is helpful!

The light stuff you can buy does not have the marrow in it and the bones are bleached and cooked til they are burned. Then they are ground up. That is why the store bought bone meal is a grayish color.
Your garden is going yo love having the marrow and bones!

When I wanted to start gardening I went to the library and started to read up on it. I read so many books over the winter that I was dreaming about gardening and having this beautiful garden. HA! But in the process of reading all the books from the library I found a two (technically three)books that I added to my personal library because there was so much good information in them that I wanted the book to be on my shelf at home and have easy access to it. One that I found is called "How to grow more vegetables* than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine" By John Jeavons
Another one is the "square foot gardening" book that one is more for companion planting than square foot gardening but the information is good. And the last one I found is by Sandal English called Fruits of the Desert because I live in Arizona I want to make cactus jelly and things that live in the desert. It is a handy book to have but it's a hard one to find. Hope this helps you grow a more bountiful harvest.

They took pretty well so my mother-in-law had two but all mine died over winter. Hers grew well and she's since given me 2 healthy cuttings from my cuttings and now they are ready to plant up! Thank you - and I love eating borage flowers, cucumber taste.

Keep an eye on the Borage. It not only attracts beneficial insects but it also likes to spread itself as much as it can. By next year you will have little Borage plants coming up everywhere around the the original plant.
I had four plants last year and still am finding new seedlings. Plus saved a lot seeds of the grown plants.
Tho, apparently all above ground stuff of Borage is Edible. Leaves , flowers, and seed. Haven't tried any myself yet but Make it make.

You will probably need more trellis for cucamelon, but it doesn't have to be anything strong. It takes a while for them to start producing, but about the time you want to give up on them, they go crazy. I finally just sat down and pulled the plants down to me, and harvested them that way. Ended up with 5 quarts.

I am an organic gardner so ... bonemeal promotes healthy roots. You really want to put some in the hole BEFORE planting your plant. A top dressing will probably work too, but generally, in the hole with your soil medium is ideal. Hope that helps you ... AND .... congratulations on your garden!!! Lookin' good!

Your garden looks to be off to a good start. Im kinda new so forgive me if you have covered this. When you need a nitrogen boost and for whatever reason you cant get none, use urine. It sounds gross but it works. If you want to try to add a little extra to the urine, focus on collecting after taking a well balanced dose of vitamins. The vitamin B complex will help you know when the vitamins are affecting the urine. Being small pills they will break down faster than the bigger vitamins. They way i use it most is early on while still in pots. It seems to help when you cant plant yet but should up pot. More in a scenario where you did everything right but weather didnt. Im no scientist but from what i understand is that the nitrogen put more focus on plant growth vs root growth. Needing to up pot or plant it bought me a couple weeks. Also, i bought some cheap marked down pepper plants because its getting late in the season and didn't sell. I got them and let them dry up the soil and get light feeling in the pot. I then hit them with straight urine just enough to wet the top a bit. Then follow with a light amount of water around 3pm to wash it deeper. I usually have to do this every two to three days for about two weeks and those peppers go from yellow to dark green and start to take off. After this point i will keep hitting them with the urine until i up pot or plant. Then i Iay off it for a week or so, let the roots get use to their new home and hit them again maybe? Just depends. If they start loosing that dark green i will. If not and they are gfowing i will just let them alone. Dont want to keep the nitrogen strong for too long or you wont get no fruit. I hope this helps someone. It helped me when i was struggling with money and the plants needed nitrogen.
