Good points. I will say to keep in mind, when we work with people of other cultures or people that learn differently with different brains, it’s very reasonable to ask someone if they understand what you are saying because it’s important for that person to understand your phrasing. It’s perceived as false confidence if that other person truly does not understand your explanation and you might have to re-explain with different words. You can still be confident while ensuring that person understands how you are explaining. That’s how teachers do it also.
You rock, @BrigetteHyacinth! This was super helpful, especially for my coworkers who lack professional communication skills. A leader is not in the title but the impacts you make. Profound!
Bridgette, your comments regarding seeing being replaced as not Rejection, however this was indeed Redirection. This recent action to my career has been the best action I have received. Thanks for your comments and causing me to see the New Direction in my career.
Great information. In my experience I've so called leaders who talk over me especially as a woman of color. I manage to hold my own. Recently read a good book entitled " Accountability at Work" good resource.
Great video, Brigitte! I do use the phrase "Does that make sense?" in some of my conversations, not because I doubt myself, but rather to gain understanding and make sure the other person is listening. I have yet to have my use of that question backfire, but I do value your insight!
I will say that the phrase irks me to my core, but I would never tell my supervisor or anyone "above me" that it makes me uncomfortable. Most people wouldn't speak up when there's a clear power difference. It's condescending, especially so when used with the wrong tone. I'd say drop the phrase. Just because there's no pushback doesn't mean people are okay with it.
I feel the phrase used properly and maybe with a couple added words is extremely useful. I have quite a number of years working with large groups of people to achieve difficult results. One of the things I know they do not like to hear is me stating something which could be taken as my implying I have the better idea. My idea is not a good term and breaks the previous rule in this video From my experience is nearly as bad even though the purpose isn't. I always have a statement when I'm imposing something upon someone who is a subordinate which allows them to give me feedback. I often will say. Does that make sense with what we're doing? Or I may say Does that make sense with what you need to accomplish? Getting feedback will establish your position & garner respect far quicker than appearing as if you have all of the answers A leader leads, but the team is far more knowledgeable. Getting feedback establishes a partnership, not me telling them what to do. That authority & respect is given, not earned & will fade
That was perfectly written and presented ! Also, the polled question which that led to the video, was the prize cherry on top! I admire your wisdom and will grow from all that you are teaching. Thank you Ms. Bridget!
Thank you for the insight, I use the word "especially" quite a bit. I am working to develop my vocabulary and articulate my words more professionally. Thank you again for the tips.
I have watched your 27 videos, took notes, going back to watch them again but this time I am almost transcribing! These are too impactful! I love them! And I love you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Where have you been my entire career? This is a powerful video full of useful leadership tips. Thank you for sharing! I've liked, subscribed, and hit the notification bell. :) looking forward to learning more!
Very informative video, as usual. Thank you very much. The question I have about the PIE model is the cultural dimension. In some cultures, especially in Asia and Africa, people are raised to listen more than to speak more. This can affect their image and exposure even though they are very high performing. The other aspect is also language. In global organisations, English is the language of communication, which obviously favours native speakers.
You are the best! Thanks for the information. I have some coworkers that decided to call me Spicy just because I always tried to have answers with facts. Some of them like to agree with the boss at all time and I am not like that.
Thank you Brigette! I admire the way how you conveyed the main message! Although there are still many things I need to acquire to become a leader after watching your meaningful video I have taken some takeaways to work on. I really wish if you could keep sharening videos with similar content in the future!
I watched the video and I DO participate, speak up in meetings and it has served to do NOTHING more than put a target on my back for my Manager to shoot at, every chance she gets. If I bring things up in a meeting regarding projects that I have successfully completed and how I did so, it' s a problem. If I give suggestions to the team on how I worked through customer issues, it's a problem, if I share situational concerns with a customer and how I helped a customer, it's a problem. I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. My team has suggested I say nothing and stop participating in the group chat/meetings verbally because the minute I open my mouth, it's a reason for me to be 'attacked' and it won't stop until I stop engaging the team. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Linda, I almost never reply to any media, but I want to help you. Your manager is gaslighting you. She is programming you that if you raise a hand, head, or voice that shewill be there to squash it. I was there about a year ago myself. This is an effort to control and to limit you. It is most likely based out of her fear of you outperforming her, her insecurity, or her narcissism. This an abusive environment. You need to get out and find a leader who serves their people. Worse case, document everything, discuss it with HR keeping in mind they serve the highest ranks so be careful, and ask for an accommodation due to the anxiety it causes you (in writing) This will guard you from a smear campaign or ramped up abuse until you can upgrade employment. I wish you the best and will say a prayer for you.
I have been sharing ideas, participates in all projects, very active, group discussions and presentation etc. my line manager when he got a chance he terminated me and portrayed me bad in front of his line manager. I was working very active in my operational handling.. now I am lookout for new job past two months ..

I was guilty of saying “probably” and “honestly “ in my interview today.
Everything you said is spot on. I am working on being friendly at work without oversharing.
How can it be done bcos I feel like I'm too quiet which may looks like I'm not friendly 😃
