      Apparently the "baking soda" is a poor translation for "caustic soda", which is the name used for sodium hydroxide in India. Ref "Uncle Jon Soap" on RUclips. (Sorry for sharing another person's link, but it seems important to dispel the baking soda myth.)

    Hey, thanks for the explenation! I have 1 question tho, why does soap can`t be made without lye? is it because it won`t solidify? or would it turn bad for your skin? or maybe because the meaning of soap just refers to something made with lye?

    • @SueandSoap
      @SueandSoap  3 года назад +3

      Without lye you only have oil. You need a metal hydroxide for the saponification. Otherwise you won't get soap.

I have been trying Herbal soap making for 1 month using the melt and pour method but I want to do it from scratch because you never know what is added in melt and pour soaps. Would you please let me know what is the minimum quantity of lye and water I should use for 60% Coconut Oil, 30% Olive Oil, 8% Almond Oil, and 2% Castor Oil? Love and Best wishes from India.

    • @SueandSoap
      @SueandSoap  3 года назад +1

      Thank you 😃 To calculate the amount of lye and water you should use a lye calculator, like for example soapcalc.net. I made a video about how to use this calculator but I think you already have seen it, hope it was helpful 😄 There is no general amount of lye or water you can use. You always have to calculate it for the oils you want to use. For the water you can go with a 2:1 ratio.

    Can we use sodium carbonate? i.e washing soda?

    • @SueandSoap
      @SueandSoap  3 года назад +1

      It is possible to get soap with sodium carbonate, but it's more a historical thing, when people made soap from wood ash. The sodium carbonate reacts to sodium hydroxide and the sodium hydroxide turns the fats into soap.

    • @SueandSoap

      Yes, you are right. You could use other metal hydroxides. The word "lye" just usually refers to Sodium Hydroxide. It is ideal for soap making as it gives you the best results for making hard soap bars. Potassium Hydroxide gives you the best results for liquid soaps. If you ever want to try something different let me know, I'm curious how different metal hydroxides would work for soap making 😃

    But how did our ancestors made soap without it ? Also they use baking soda soap in palestine, What's your thought about it ?

    • @SueandSoap
      @SueandSoap  3 года назад +2

      Our ancestors made soap from woodash, which contains potassium. There are a lot of interesting videos here on RUclips. Baking soda alone doesn't make soap. You need to process it, but even then you only get a very low concentration of sodium Hydroxide out of it and soap making with that low concentration is not really efficient. Also in Palestine they use lye to make soap, not baking soda.

    • @Bambotb
      @Bambotb 3 года назад

      @@SueandSoap why can't we use woodash?

    • @SueandSoap
      @SueandSoap  3 года назад +1

      @@Bambotb Sure you can use woodash to make soap! It takes a few days, but it's absolutely possible. That's how our ancestors made soap. When you add water to woodash you will get Potassium Hydroxide. What we call lye is a water solution of either Potassium Hydroxide or Sodium Hydroxide. You will need at least one of those to make soap.
