This is how I calculate my soap recipe since making soap for 18 years. I hand to learn how to understand the soap calculators. I prefer doing it with the table. I have all the books listed below. Thank you for the video review.

this is of great help! I was able to understand SAP concepts that would help arrive how much NAOH needed consider different value of lye discount! Your details of soap chemistry NAOH-KOH relationship using molecular weight helped.
    Thanks a lot!

I just found you because I was strangely interested in the concept of soap and you popped up. Love the content!
The way there are so many different kinds of "soap" for our hair, our face, our body, our dishes, our clothes. I'm trying to figure out if in the end....it's all the same - can someone use the bar of soap for everything or does adding "other" ingredients matter for different uses? Hope you can make a video about this

Awesome! Thank you! I'll keep that in mind 😃 When you make cold process soap it all depends on the oil composition and if you use any additional ingredients. So you can make a variety of soaps for different uses. There are so many possibilities 💗

hi, Sue! it's not about this video, but I'm curious about one thing and I have no idea who I need to ask for😄 I'm going to try make homemade soap from used cooking oil. it could contain some food parts and of course it's gonna be filtered but as I know it's not enough to get really clear oil. my question is about how dangerous could be this soap, what do I need to expect and how could I use it?
thank you for your answers, it is very important for me!😊

What is that 0.06 lye percentage thing? I have made soap a few times and I used sodium hydroxide. Only once was it lye heavy. Kind of burned the eyes... Thank you for explaining how to do the saponification calculations. How do you know how much water to use to make the NaOH solution? Thanks again!

Soap for face and body need oils with better conditioning properties like olive oil or canola oil. Without any dry effects on the skin.
    Must be super fatted.
Soap for clothes need no conditioning, better use coconut oil etc. which cleans better.
    But dry to the skin.
Soap for clothes need no super fat.
Slightly lye heavy is ok if not wash with hand.
Different oils in a soap recipe ballance the total properties of hardness,
    moisturizing (conditioning), and or
cleaning (non conditioning) in the final soap piece.

Yes, you are right. I think it's a personal decision if you want to use a lye discount or not when you make your own soap, I wouldn't say you must. But the soap for skin definitely is more nourishing with a lye discount. And of course it also depends on the oils you use.

You can always take the value soap calc gives you. The differences between oils from different locations are not that big that you would need to use a different sap value.

Unfortunately the website and video are both doing the math wrong, that is, with too many significant figures in the numbers. The ratio of NaOH to KOH is only using 3 digits, so the answer can’t be more than that. But 3 decimal places is more than enough for this process, especially when you do the discount at the end. The goal is to go a little light on the base, not to add a extremely precise amount of it.
