Different oils for making soap- What's the difference?

- Today, I want to discuss the different oils we have at our disposal for making soap. There are different oils for making soap, and each brings a slightly different quality to the finished product.
This is pretty much the only online source i use for my base oils at this point: www.soaperschoice.com/
Lye Calculator that we use: www.soapcalc.net
Many times, the liquid oils are actually cheaper at your local box store like Sam's or Costco, etc..

"One conditioning oil + one cleansing oil" is a tip I'm going to keep in mind when I finally start making some soap!
I quickly wrote that down.
I live in a Greek island and every year we have a lot of olive oil waste (thick olive at the bottom of the container ) and i start making soap for my family to reduce the plastic bottles of the shower gels .my recipe is the easiest that gets only olive oil lye and water and maybe levander or orange zest .my grandmother used olive oil soap for body/hair and washing clothes and dishes all her life and everything was spotless!!!!! Thank you for your lovely video!!!!
omg in indonesia olive oil so expensive 😭😭
Oh my goodness I would love to have “Real Olive 🫒 Oil”
because I’m not sure
whether we actually
are buying Real Olive Oil here in the states….and reading you’re text, to me Is
astounding that there’s real Greek Olive Oil and 😮 I
Absolutely Love ❤️ Real Olive Oil and it is so healthy… God is
Good and worthy to be praised for the wonderful miracles in oils vegetable 🥦
Fruits 🍎 trees that have life and actually give us heath to save our lives… and so much
more knowledge god has given man
and woman to make and drink 🥤 many things out of the oxygennative 🌳 trees… all of us are blessed beyond measure to have just a little bit of the miracle properties
that God has endowed to us….
I would love to have a lot of that wasted Olive Oil….. here we are poor to because of our goverment…. They stay rich and we the poor stay poor… born poor and
die poor… but the lord Jesus did say that his saints(children) are a poor and needy people… But God’s
Grace is Sufficient and will always be
Sufficient….
I like your straightforward, no nonsense way of delivering helpful information.
Thanks!
i don't get you when you said, straight coconut oil is the only soap that...what in sea ?
@@andrewyek Coconut oil soap is the only soap that lathers in Sea water.
@@unclejonssoap 🇹🇹Thank you i didn't know that
Moood!
"There is a difference between using something on your skin and eating it." Good to know. I'll stop grabbing shaving cream whenever I'm out of cool whip.
🤣 you got the jist
Coconut oil makes a good "salt water" lathering up soap. Very good to know. In case...I don't know why, but because it's good to know.
Just incase you get stranded in an island and the only water to bathe is sea water.
@@JM-jb1bh sign me up 😆
coconut oil can be very drying.
Likely useful if you’re out sailing for a long period of time and fresh water is at a premium.
How to tell you failed to make it even a quarter of the way into the video
I made my first soap 2 month ago. I used the first soapbar days ago. I am so happy! I made it with olive - a. coconutoil. I added teatree oil and a bit of arganoil. A bit spirulina for the color. I do not need to change the oils, they make my skin so smooooth! This base is perfect and I will make more!
Very helpful, actually. Made me think a lot about how I make my soap & that I DONT have to use all the fancy oils and whatnot. It reminded me that there is beauty in simplicity as well.
"actually"
Yup!
THANK YOU! I AM SO GLAD I CAME ACROSS THIS!

I just found your videos and I love them! They are so informative and teaching me everything I need to know so I can start making soap!! Thank you for putting these out there! I like the fact that you are teaching about the details instead of just making a soap recipe!!!
Thank you Uncle Jon! You never disappoint! I was really concerned about the types of oils I'm using.

Thank you so much. I’ve “liked” a lot of videos that made pretty soap but you are the first that actually spoke of the chemistry of soap making. Thank you again.

Simple and straight forward. Thanks Jon.
I could watch your videos for hours. I really enjoyed this one.
Enjoyed your tutorial for soap making. It’s good to know that soap making can be less expensive to make by not using a whole lot of oils. Thank you
I watched my grandmother make soap and her soap was wonderful. She made basic soap, seemed like it took no more than 30 minutes for a batch, and it smelled wonderfully fresh..
I thank you for putting a light at the end of the tunnel. I started making soap again. Just a hobby but I like knowing that what I make is probably better than the grocery store sells. As a little boy I was intrigued knowing the science of how things worked
together. Rich
Learned more from your video than most others o have watched. Thank you!
I woke up today like HEY IM GOING TO MAKE MY OWN SOAP
Yes!
Same 😂
I just experienced this same conversion in Western Australia 🇦🇺 It’s becoming a worldwide faith. 😉😄
Me too. Today marks the day
I am still in the planning stage for my soap business. Thank you very much for keeping things simple in your videos. Please get into the trending oils, if you can.
Uncle Jon love your stuff, thank you again for sharing with us :)
I'm so glad i came across this educational clip. Thank you thank you so so so much.
I like this Guy!!! I can really learn from him.
I made my first batch last week with oils I had on hand at home, olive, coconut, sweet almond and argon oils. It seems to be great and I hope it will improve with age. My second bar was made with olive, coconut and rendered bacon fat and it was awesome. I’ve now made 2, 1,000 and a 500g batch. I spent less that $10 making these and now I’m hooked on the process. Thanks for the information and inspiration. I dig your videos.
Nice!
You are so right, it’s nice to hear someone who is so down to earth, wish there were more like you!
Thanks!
Thank you for being straightforward 👍
I definitely keep mine simple ... my soaps are great ... no need to put all the essential oils in your soaps like some do .... mine feels great and it’s simple ...your videos are to the point ... not all the giggles you get from other videos..
I just started this new hobby and is so overwhelmed. Thank God i saw your video. Is very helpful! 👍
Can u give me tips, i have questions for what to use to make it smell like u want, fot example how do u make your soap smell like chocolate or something, but keeping everything natural
Yes! This is just a hobby for me. I'm hoping I love it its been awesome learning these things
Thank you for the website for base oils. I really enjoyed the information you shared.
Thanks for all this information ,it was very helpful.
Thank you for these tips. I've been hobby soap making for about seven months. Just like you said, I've lost and made some expensive batches. Just because I didn't know the difference. Now I've hit the reset button and started making lard/olive oil soaps. I'm seeing much better results.
Wow!!! My new found hero!!!🙌 I can't thank you enough!
I'm so glad I came across this video. I want to start making soaps , bath bombs etc. and you really help me understand the depth of making soap! I really thought put oils in a bowl pour in a mold and that's it! I really love how you explain clean and clear! thanks a lot!!
Thank you. I have been telling my guests this for years. However, because some other soap maker has told them that they absolutely need a soap made with 15 different fats; I get folks that just completely look down on what I do. I chalk it up to ignorance (not meaning that in a bad sense) and try to educate as much as they will allow me to.
Anyway, I'm happy to see a common sense approach, as I was starting to think that I was the only one saying these things.
I agree with you 💯 no nonsense straight forward. Thank you 😊
I am a noob, and this is so helpful! Just started making soap with my Dad because he had a surplus of beef tallow from another project, and I was not impressed with the scent of hot beef tallow, so he suggested a plant based oil option. Thank you for sharing this information!
Ooooo i love u uncle jon....i been watching alot of videos about diy soaps n ur video is straight up to the point.thank you soooo much..
Thanks Jon I'll be making soap soon and I'll do coconut and olive oil, plus a little fragrance.
Thanks. I like your straight forward approach and common sense.
Thanks!
Thank you so much Uncle John
I loved the way you have explained everything in this video
My soaps are at least 60% tallow. Some people grossed out because it's not plant base. I used it because it's the part of animal that people throw away and I think it's such a waste of the animals' lives. It makes wonderful soaps. I do a little twist with fancy oil for marketing. Thanks for the video.
same. I render my own tallow and love it for soap making
My granddaughter Katuri and I will make our 1st batch of soap this weekend!! All of our supplies have arrived & we can't wait!! #Covid19 making me want to become more self sufficient! Laundry detergent will be next once we master soap. Thanks for reminding me "there's nothing wrong with nyce & simple"
Thanks for sharing with us again. Love your channel.
abe frohman thanks!
I am a first timer... and this helped me to not be confused on choosing the right oil.
I dropped all other oils but olive and coconut. Loved my soaps so much more now.
This was so helpful. I want to make soap but so I read some recipes and it looks difficult and expensive to buy all those difference oils. Now I know it's not all necessary
Love your videos, more simple, cost effective and fun
I'm late..but this tutorial was awesome! I learned so much and you keep it REAL!!!
Great video, thank you. Simplicity is king, happy soap-making people (:
Love your presentation & humour. Thanks for highlighting the basic facts of soap ingredients & keeping the process simple as simple as you can. I tend to over complicate things and your advice will help keep me on track. 👏🏻👏🏻
WOW THANK YOU!!!!! Best advice i needed this.
Thanks Jon that was good advice. I'm just about to start my first effort at soap making, wish me luck!
Thanks for the video Jon! Have a great day.
+Heritage Soap Co. Thanks for watching!
I like tallow soap for hairwashing and castile for skin. The castile soap I was using left too much residue in my hair which even a strong vinegar rinse wouldn't shift, but it's nice and gentle on my sensitive skin. The tallow soap cleans my hair very well and seems to rinse out much better, after a vinegar rinse it's perfect and leaves my hair just as if I'd used fancy shampoo and conditioner!
Hi Jon... thanks for the info! I'll be making soap for myself and family and your vid gave me perspective. KEEP IT SIMPLE ... roger that
Great info! Thanks for the honesty and straight forwardness. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
You win for most informative! You are the best!!! No one else mentioned the soap calculator...What a HUGE difference in not wasting time and money by trial and error. You have given me a big jumpstart! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!~JAG (I'm also going all organic, and sticking to organic 100% lavendar oil, I'm glad for the confirmation~Lavendar oil should be safe.)
Essential oils are great. Make sure they're not already adulterated with a base oil, or synthetic, and they'll also provide anti-viral assistance. Also, antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal. Lavender is a good all round choice for all of those qualities if required.
Lots of great info ty!!! Just starting now on a path ☺️
Great video, so informative and without all the crap .... thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thank you for the video! I'm getting started and this was very informative.
