While "States are doing studies" "reviewing proposals" PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR CHILDHOOD AND ONLY HOMES DUE to the egregious abuse of property taxes through over tax assessments of their homes. There is a very well versed attorney/accountant Mr. Mitch Vexler in Texas who has a movement with petition and has filed court cases to rid property taxes. He hopes to take it to Supreme Court. Many States have had a surplus budget for multiple years. Did anyone who pays Real Estate Property taxes get a large reduction in their property taxes? We think not. Shame Shame on Every State municipality that is grossly fleecing the Elderly, Veterans, Retirees and Homeowners with egregious Real Estate Property tax bills! Where are the State representatives to put a stop to this madness??!! People ARE losing their homes. WHY SHOULD homeowners have to pay ridiculously high property taxes to compensate for commercial buildings not paying their property taxes!!! The municipalities MADE the BAD investments and allowances to those businesses NOT the Homeowners!!! How can these crooked tax assessors be allowed to overvalue someone's property by hundreds of thousands of dollars, when they are not investors and those homes are their only homes. NOT ALL States have HOMESTEAD, not sure WHY??? But Why should an elderly person, over 60 years old, only on Social Security/Pension, who only has one residence, be charged $28,000k per year for their home! Anyone 60 years of age or older should not have to pay property taxes at all for their homes as that is their only residence. Property Taxes, HOA Fees, Condo Fees, Overpriced homes, are making hard working taxpayers lose their only property (Home, Condo). How can it be legal to suddenly raise Condo fees by 40%. How can it be legal to raise HOA Fees by 50%. Many areas are becoming like Detroit and Mississippi - desolate and empty as the working class is continuously fleeced. The vile tax assessors are getting multi-year promotions using Taxpayer dollars because these tax assessors ARE Overvaluing people's properties to bring in money to the municipalities. They don't care that people end up homeless (many veterans and elderly) or their home comes into foreclosure because they had to borrow against equity and credit cards to try and pay their property taxes or HOA or Condo fees. Any representative in office who has an issue with keeping the elderly from losing their home should be shamed. Where are the State representatives to put a stop to this madness?!

Homeowners are not the only ones that use the roads why do they have to pay for them? Some homeowners have no children using the public schools, why do they have to pay for something they get no value from? It's BS and we went to war over a tax on tea. This is worse. Strange how I happened across this today. I’ve been in a correspondence exchange with my local Property Appraisers office concerning this very subject. Particularly the multiple school tax assessments. Governments appetite to spend our money for, in many cases who knows what, is insatiable and all they have to do is pass new milage rates within the statute guidelines. Anyway I realize they are just administrators following state laws, well sort of, so it’s our state legislature and governor that need to hear from we the people. I’m requesting the county budget line item by line item that comprises the tax and therefore mils, applicable statutes and their written policy as a start.
Im well into my retirement years and this theft must stop! I was still paying my mother’s tax in her 90’s. You think she could have lived a better life without that burden? Yet as you say. Don’t pay and they confiscate your property and sell it. After working hard your whole life, paying your mortgage and insurance and the government can do that to you?

I am now a senior, and it's a matter of time before I sell my house because I cannot afford the property taxes and insurance in retirement. My property taxes have doubled since 2000 as property values more than doubled. I tried appealing this based on the repairs needed (I bought a fixer-upper). The men in the taxation dept said they didn't care about the house's value; it was the value of the land. My house insurance tripled in 4 years--no claims, not in a high-risk area. My car insurance doubled; I work from home, seldom drive, have no claims, etc. I sold the house I had before because the property taxes went from $4900/year to $12K/year in 8 years. I had no luck appealing those increases either. What are the taxing agencies doing with the money? Plus, I pay 8.25% sales tax. How will local governments get their money if not from property taxes? Governments get you one way or another. Recently, I voted against a bunch of bonds. It was explained to me that the bonds would be repaid by increasing property taxes sometime in the future.

They're taxing well water? It takes electricity to run the pump, so, it already costs to operate the well, and the power is usually, taxed. So, that's a tax on tax, not to mention well owners pay for their own repairs, not the government. Isn't water a basic essential of life, same as breathing? People die in less time without water than without food. My opinion is that the water in most of The U.S. isn't safe to drink, and it should be free by now and all cities should offer free potable water. Is this the era of science and technology or not? We got AI? We can live without that. Not water. Aren't there volunteers that go to other countries to dig wells so people have free safe water? But we tax it here.....I can't bear knowing some places do this....

@@rosafalls8068 I wanna correct myself. As of now, there is no such thing as well tax but the government has been planning to implement one, and we all no what that means. Drilling wells need to be permitted which involves a fee.
This country, Hungary, has the most types of taxes in Europe and by the way non of the countries are doing well. Not long ago in the 60s, 70s, the use of water was free and the irony of all is that since the country is located in a geological basin, there is a large volume of groundwater that could provide for everybody but it has not been utilized. Governments could not care less, they are just talk, no action. Both of them the former communist parties, their offshoots and the so called right side.
Water in Hungary is still good quality but who knows what they put into that. There is enough water on this planet to provide even for 10 billion people. The only thing that is needed for water treatment to be potable is energy but the u.s has enough energy, she just has to be a bit more independent.
Everything is about energy and I know there is free energy but it has been suppressed, but hopefully within the next decade or 20 years we'll be given access to that but change has to come now.
Yes, we have all of this technology and AI but our living condition are getting worse and worse and the western world is turning into a big slum. Maybe, Florida is still ok..

Though I have to say that I really feel like this is something that could come back to bite us if not enacted with great consideration. For instance I don't believe that this would have the desired effect if not paired with a limit to the amount of property one could own. That would leave too much room for the wealthy to buy as much as they want, without there ever being a legal way for the government to keep that in check. Also I strongly feel as though companies and corporations should be exempt from this relief, as they are presumably never going to have to worry about not receiving enough income, and if that does happen they will likely move elsewhere anyway.
But I do completely agree that we (the people) should absolutely only have to _buy_ something once.

Back in 1994, Michigan lowered property taxes and increased their state sales tax from 4% to 6%. There’s the trade off. School funding was tied to property taxes pre-1994 and therefore more local government control was maintained (or squandered based on one’s perspective). After 1994, education authority was consolidated at the state gov’t level. I’m guessing in terms of real dollars, it was a wash for the average property owner. For renters, this was clearly a loss.

I believe in ending unfair property taxes. They need to reduce extremely high property taxes to a manageable and fair amount. When property tax is so high it makes poor people pay twice for a property that they have paid fully for. 😎💯💪🏾👍🏾 It's unfair to loose your property that you have paid for, because you have fail to pay some property tax.

People saying "Everyone of all economic backgrounds deserves education" in one breath, and then saying "Only the rich deserve houses, and if you can't afford it, sucks to suck" by supporting property taxes is insanity.

Property taxes are illegal given it "was" based upon a sales tax. The rest is fear.

One of the biggest problems is the city/county will not give a balance sheet of where all the money is going. The appraisal is based only on the whim of an appraiser. Sales of homes for an average is not a 'scientific method' of determining appraisal value.

There should be zero taxes on food and some states have that already. Think about it, a family of 5 or more would pay more than a single person because they need more food. There's is something wrong with that equation.

@birgitelisabeth9661 That family of 5 already received a tax break for being a family. If taxes need to be paid, families should pay more, as they require more.

@@birgitelisabeth9661 A family of five would use more of everything. Not just food. It cost around $163,000 to educate a child from kindergarten through 12th grade in an average public school system. If you add extra curricular activities to it that can drive it up by hundreds of dollars a year. You'd have to make a lifetime commitment to a community to repay your lot...
I'd get tightening your belt if you have five kids.

Hmmm…Florida’s homestead Save Our Homes tax limitation keeps annual property appraisal increases down to a max of 3% or the annual CPI rate, whichever is lower, for full time Florida Residents. Many seniors who have owned their small condo, townhouse, or house for years pay a very reasonable property tax in the $500 a year range.
However, a large party of seniors income is paid for groceries, medicines and medical supplies, medical equipment and other goods and services. Currently groceries are not subject to sales taxes, neither are prescription drugs.
Will the sales tax apply to new and used cars, homes, condos? An average small home in Florida is $300,000 so 10% of that is $30,000…What about a new roof? Or insurance? Will these be subject to sales taxes?
In my case, a fixed income retired couple, we will pay far more for a 10% sales tax than we do for property taxes. But the devil is in the details, would major purchases like houses and cars be excluded? Will Taxes rebated for low income folks?
In principle I agree that property taxes are illegal taxes on unrealized gains and are close to a poll tax that our founders fought against in the American Revolution. Once you own it, it should not be taxed. But what about when you die?
I don’t think there should be an estate tax either so families can pass farms, businesses and homes to children without taxation and accumulate inter-generational wealth. We all use already taxed income in the first place to buy a property and to pay off any mortgage, so why should their purchase be taxed again?
This does not address the government revenue/expenditure side. A crises is brewing in heavily indebted municipalities because of over spending by these local governments, which issue municipal bonds to pay for new schools, and other needs.
The crises is that they spend like the Federal government but without a dollar printing press, so new bond issues act like the dollar printer. But in some (most?) states local governments fail to pay off the older bonds, adding new bond issues to the existing pile, rolling it all over and with higher interest payments owed which will explode carrying costs exponentially.
Apparently, many of them fail to pay down the bond debt they owe and residents have no idea that this debt is driving ever higher property taxes.
So many questions, very few answers. I applaud your effort to shine a light on this complicated topic that affects everyone.

In NY State, if property tax was eliminated, a lot of the current problems would solve themselves. You have basic houses with $500 a month of property taxes, and often that $500 is the very exact amount of money that people need to live more comfortably.
