    In Holland there is a 'coach' that goes for an option 3. For beginners.
    The plan has a lot of running on marathon pace/hearthrate. But it compensates with overall low mileage, and the longest long run about 9miles.
    This is quite controversial as you can imagine, but for people who just want to run a marathon once, and plan on >4hrs it could be a good option.
    It would not go this route myself but I personally know people who have gone this route with success.

      This is interesting - totally get how it could work. Sounds not sustainable and way off brand for me, but cool that they do that.
