wats ur marathon pb? if it was wen younger wat is it these days? how old r u?
2:59:57 done 6 years ago. I’ve never specifically trained for the marathon… possibly in the next year or two. How about you?
@@1betterrun i havent even completed one yet XD one day tho if u dont train for the marathon what do u mainly train for?
Ha! That one day should be 2025 or be smart and spend 4 years slowly training for it by focusing on doing shorter distance races and building up. I mainly train for 5k and half marathon.
@@1betterrun what makes u choose the 5k and half? those distances feel more fun for u? also wats ur time in either of them? and whats ur favourite daily trainer/tempo shoe/race day shoes atm?
So helpful, thank you!
anytime!!!
Regarding #1. How can you know what's your 100%?
Ha. The question of all questions. This is super subjective but 100% is death haha. I know I’m getting close when the pain is high and the recovery takes forever and it bleeds into the next day or two or three like a bad hangover.
In Holland there is a 'coach' that goes for an option 3. For beginners. The plan has a lot of running on marathon pace/hearthrate. But it compensates with overall low mileage, and the longest long run about 9miles. This is quite controversial as you can imagine, but for people who just want to run a marathon once, and plan on >4hrs it could be a good option. It would not go this route myself but I personally know people who have gone this route with success.
This is interesting - totally get how it could work. Sounds not sustainable and way off brand for me, but cool that they do that.

Move your legs faster with a longer stride!
this is not good advice..
Yes in theory but unfortunately most people will over stride and heel strike and cause injury over time. Shorter steps and pushing from your hips and glutes forward works best but takes time to reprogram.
@@1betterrun unless you have a short stride making your stride longer will just slow you down correct that being when your foot hit the ground the amount of time it takes to life off depends on where it lands on impacts if it’s in front of you your whole body has to move over then proceed to the next step while if it’s right below you you can immediately switch to the next step to run?
Doesen't these principles for getting faster apply to any distance?
Yes
@nyelands - yup. I have a theory that training for the 5k and the marathon are the same all year until the last 13 weeks. Might do an episode or two on it. See if people like it. What do you think?
So so helpful. Great insights and advice - thanks just what I needed

What’s your best 5k time?
Hey awesome video need some advice . I need to run 300m in 55 second and 1 mile under 8 minute currently i can run 300m in 55 sec but having hard time with mile what should i focus on should i do more easy runs ?? Currently i do 800m x repeate 3-4 times i get Timing of 4:10 - 4:15 1 long run at around 7-8 minutes per km for around 6 km 1 tempo run where i run at around 10 minutes mile for 2-3 miles 1 speed workout where i run 200 300 and 100m And remaining 3 days 1 day i do core and hips exercise , 1 day i do some dumbbell workout and 1 day rest But the mile time isn't coming down please give me some suggestions
It seems your overall mileage is quite low. To clarify, you do: - 3-4x 800m, about 15 mins - 20-30 minute tempo run - speed workout, <30 minutes? - long run, about 1 hour The fact that you have the gym sessions in there is great, as well as a rest day, however it doesn't sound like you're running enough. My advice would be this: 1. Slowly build your long run up to 10km, adding 1km per fortnight (i.e. every second run) 2. Make the tempo run 30 minutes, and do 5x 800m repeats (faster than tempo pace) - make sure you're warming up and cooling down with 5-10 minutes of slow running either side of these workouts 3. Drop the speed workout. Instead, do another slow run for 60 minutes - should be about 7-8km at your pace. You will see your 1 mile pace start to come down over the next 3-6 months. Remember: you need to have a good, solid aerobic base to run fast over long distances.
Just give it up lad, leave the fast running to the experts
I’m comparing you with me in august and you re pretty fast at 800m 4:15 per km but 8 min per km at slow run seems too slow is your form even correct? do more miles at an easy pace but not walk pace…
Drop the harder sessions, just run more volume. Build slowly to 4hrs per week of easy endurance running and those times will be easy to hit. I wouldn't focus too much on harder sessions until you are a bit quicker and more experience, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze when you don't have a good base built up. For reference, I personally was able to go sub 18 in the 5k purely off easy running ~4hrs per week consistently, which would make that mile split a breeze!
@@honda_maniac I did some miscalculation its actually 38 minutes for 6 km on long run

Is milk bad for runners?
Not bad but depends on the person and your ability to handle lactose. It’s a good source of protein, fat carbs and vitamins Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink. Get lactose free if you can’t handle lactose. Or go with soy chocolate milk if you’re vegan.

@1betterrun Smoking bro! I ran a 17:45 in October! I want to get down to 16s. Im about 180 and i want to get down between 170-175.
@@perryscott4204 You got this! Funny - I was slightly heavy when I did it. If you're properly over weight/carrying to much fat, yes sure shave that off. But I would look to increase your vo2 max via training doing short and fast intervals at 3k pacing with short rest (400s-800s) , get a rock solid max aerobic base fitness (high zone 2), and do some tempo run and lactate tolerance runs a few weeks out (3x 1 mile or 3x2k @faster than race pace with short rest.) that will destroy you, but you'll come back quite ready. \

@@supposeyoulost DOPE! Glad to be of service and all the best with your road running for MMA (I think I got that right). Cardio is great for most things (in moderation) but most people, like most things abuse the hell out of it - depends on people's goals though.
These are exactly the words of wisdom you need to hear if you are in it for the long haul. “Consistency is the key” I keep telling everyone. Small steps regularly. I’m 63 now, first marathon back in 1981 at age 20, ran my 66th this year in 2024, (plus 122 separate half’s, best of 1:12, Ave of 1:22 after 100 total at age 50, only could manage 1:53 this year). Full Marathon PB of 2:32 back in ‘91, under 3hrs - 18 times, average of 3:10 at the 50 marathon total at age 50, now in it for the “health insurance”. Only running 4:20 now, but who the hell cares, most guys my age look like they are pregnant. I’m with you my friend, set REALISTIC goals and keep getting your butt out that bloody door. 👍👍👍 yeah, baby!! You are not alone. Set the example by doing it yourself. “Do it while you still can” is my motto. Cheers from NZ.
This comment is everything!!! So much wisdom here. WOW. You’ve done some amazing stuff. Congrats on your 66th marathon plus 122 halfs!) And I love the “health insurance” angle of running for you in your 60s. Heck yeah man! Keep it up. Love your work.
Thanks for your response, it’s amazing how it all adds up if you just do a realistic amount each year, but just through consistency it turns into a beast you never originally intended, for example, there is a local half marathon here (100 miles up country, a good weekend trip away) where I was at the inaugural event in 1983, missed ‘84 and ‘87 runnings of it, but haven’t missed one now since 1988! (37 consecutively). Next year’s running, in May, will be my 40th of that one event. I never thought that would happen. I don’t like people bragging etc, but at this stage I just like to tell someone if it inspires someone to make a positive effort in life. I also have a pilgrimage marathon that I run each year, the next one will be number 29, my first one was in ‘82, but haven’t missed one this century! It just gets silly! Now I can’t miss one, why would you? or I’d need a really good excuse at least. Just saying I can’t be bothered doesn’t cut the mustard, come on!! All the best to you and your channel, “good on ya mate” “sweet as” as we say here in NZ.
🦸🏾♂️
🚀🤷🏽♂️🙏
Thank you from India! This video helped me. I subscribed to your channel. I really thought you can just run and you'll be fine.
