completely forgot Dempsey was on the bench. regardless of the opponent or probabilities, in a decisive match to send us to a wold cup you don't leave our greatest ever player on the bench. us soccer got what it deserved for hiring Bruce arena
Funny how I have been following the USMNT since 1994, learned the history, only read the video tagline and already knew what match this was going to be without clicking or looking at the image.
What an insane night. The combination of how poorly we played, the lucky goals in that game, both results with crazy improbable goals in them both going against us.
To clarify: They said the USMNT complained about the bad training conditions, which was perceived as arrogant by T&T, so T&T were motivated to take them down a notch. So it was not the wet field, not directly at least.
Fast forward to March 27, 2022, the USMNT won two titles over Mexico in 2021 (2020-21 CONCACAF Nations League and 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup) and on the verge of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a 5-1 hammering of Panama.
The only comfort I have from this horrible night is reminding myself that even if they would have qualified, the US likely would have gotten steamrolled in the group stage in a way that would have made the 2006 squad cringe. But it’s still by far the worst night I’ve ever had as a soccer fan. And I’m still questioning if the ticket I bought for the 2019 Gold Cup was worth the investment. EDIT: Oh my god, you just had to show that Wondolowski miss. 😫
I'm glad we lost. This needs to be a huge wake up call for the US. The fact is WE JUST SUCK AT THIS SPORT. The men's team has had a lucky run since 1990 and years like 2002 and 2010 gave everyone a false impression that this country can be top competitors in soccer/football but we're not! With this loss, I hope the USMNT will finally make some real changes but for the time being, we just suck and that's a fact. At lease we have the USWNT. They can actually be competitive and win.
The thing is that the NA Qualifier is pretty easy. You only have Mexiko and Costa Rica as real threads. If the USA played in Europe or in South America. I dont think that USA would have been able to Qualify for any World Cup.
@@danieldrexel3875 We played with outdated tactics and players that didn't care about playing for their country. Also some of the players have talked bad about fans during press conferences due to the fans booing them for missing the World Cup.

This game was a classic case of why you HAVE to pull the plug on an older roster on a national team. The World Cup is for younger legs and we are seeing that exact thing this World Cup. That game that night had a buch of over-aged players that looked so gdamn lethargic that our GK'er couldnt even get to the far post on a 40 yard kick by T&T. Howard, Bradley, Cameron, Gonzalez, Altidore and Dempsey all looked totally exhausted. This is also why I had NO issue with Landon Donovan being left off of the 2014 Cup roster, he was over the hill and Klinsmann and his staff knew it. We were already and older team going into that World Cup with guys like Jermaine Jones, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, DeMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron.
Altidore is garbage, terrible touch, terrible shooting. He’s just some big guy they throw up there to see what happens, it’s always disappointing to see him dragged out there.
Just had a look at the Mex Hon game and the winner from Honduras came from a player who was offside when he received the pass, but that wasn't the only controversy in the qualifiers....
Actually you missed a important point about the revenge issue in 1990, Trinidad needed a win or a draw to go thru to the world cup and was upset by USA.

Mexico and Costa Rica had the quality but being in the world cup already why would you risk injury on a meaningless match.. you're just playing for pride.
The US is at fault for playing as if they were assured victory just for showing up to the game... once they realized a loss was actually going to result in them being ousted from the world cup they tried to tie it with no time left... it was a team full of settlers that didn't deserve a chance at the world cup tbh.

I will always remember this night. Craziest night in CONCACAF qualifying history. I was watching all 3 games at once and the last 10 minutes were just unbelievable. This paired with the last 2 rounds of South American qualifiers... I'm surprised I made it through that month without suffering a heart attack!

USA and Italy didn't qualify 2018 World Cup. Look at where both teams are now, sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can move up.
It's all about adapting. Hopefully, the USWNT gets the memo after another disappointing Olympic Games.
Yeah Bruce, I’m sure Spain, England, Portugal, and etc. would struggle to qualify against the likes of T&T, Honduras, and etc... Italy and Netherlands would’ve destroyed if they were in North America.
wtf
Even Chile too
The sad thing is Sunday, January 31st, 2021. Our backups and third strings beat the same team (Trinidad and Tobago) 7-0 😂
that's why this is the best sport in the world unpredictable things like this can happen
Well, it was a deserved lynching. So far so good for our Octagonal campaign. Also won a regional double of Nations League and Gold Cup...and won three straight matches against Mexico with yet another #DosACero...
On an unrelated note Alvin Jones scored almost and identical goal for it to be 2-1 in the second leg in the quarter finals
I'm still waiting for the episode of The Worst about Brazil losing to Germany in 2014
I come from the future. We have avenged Couva. We have returned to the FIFA World Cup.
Thank god I still only have a passing interest in soccer. It's nice to watch once every four years but we already have enough sports of our own.
As someone who is half Trinidadian this makes me extremely smug
It’s honestly amazing how there were so many little events that could’ve changed everything, but I’m glad it happened the way it did. It exposed the US for the ineptitude

It’s not the first time that trinidad and Tobago ruins a wcq for a Concacaf team they had previously knocked out Guatemala and twice Honduras
Team USA & Canada have a winning strategy now. Play the home qualifiers in as close to blizzard conditions as possible. 🥶
Lol. To me it seems like every USA home game takes place in Ohio in the fall/winter.

And this is why we have the USWNT 🇺🇸
Funny how I have been following the USMNT since 1994, learned the history, only read the video tagline and already knew what match this was going to be without clicking or looking at the image.
What an insane night. The combination of how poorly we played, the lucky goals in that game, both results with crazy improbable goals in them both going against us.
USMNT furiously blaming the loss on a wet field rather than their disappointing performance is the most on-brand US thing ever. Thank you T&T
To clarify: They said the USMNT complained about the bad training conditions, which was perceived as arrogant by T&T, so T&T were motivated to take them down a notch. So it was not the wet field, not directly at least.
As if the other team was not also playing on the wet field?
Even as someone who's not religious, this series isn't the same without having "the year of our lord" before the year
Anyone watching this in 2021 for obvious reasons?
Yo fr we just bad at soccer/ Football
Fast forward to March 27, 2022, the USMNT won two titles over Mexico in 2021 (2020-21 CONCACAF Nations League and 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup) and on the verge of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a 5-1 hammering of Panama.
I can't believe you put me through that hurt again. 😭😭😭
2019 Gold Cup Final and we’re still trash.... Nice.
at least USA made the final... fast forward to june 2021 and the US embarrassed Mexico after conceding in the second minute
yall need to make up yall mind about the year of our lord
Coming up on three years later, and they still haven't come back from it.
Just thought I’d let you know, if the clock says 17:06, that’s the 18th minute.
Your only future is Pulisic...
jet4212006 if we didn’t have pay to play we’d be decent
The thing is that the NA Qualifier is pretty easy. You only have Mexiko and Costa Rica as real threads. If the USA played in Europe or in South America. I dont think that USA would have been able to Qualify for any World Cup.
@@danieldrexel3875 We played with outdated tactics and players that didn't care about playing for their country. Also some of the players have talked bad about fans during press conferences due to the fans booing them for missing the World Cup.
I don't think we'll ever have a good team, with sport's like football, basketball and baseball being way more popular in the US most men would rather play those sports
Words cannot describe the pain I experienced in watching this game
The USMNT and Italy went from missing the 2018 FIFA World Cup to winning titles in three years. Their futures are much brighter.
@James , Why? I'm curious.
Altidore is garbage, terrible touch, terrible shooting. He’s just some big guy they throw up there to see what happens, it’s always disappointing to see him dragged out there.
I am not trying to start arguments or to be contrary but as a panamanian, this was the best night of my life
USA's BACK! THE USMNT IS BACK IN THE FIFA WORLD CUP STAGE! The failed qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is now a distant memory.
I was devastated. I remember sitting in a car just bewildered at how it all happened.
Just had a look at the Mex Hon game and the winner from Honduras came from a player who was offside when he received the pass, but that wasn't the only controversy in the qualifiers....
Robbing us of a potential Russia v. USA matchup, which would have been epic.
Plot twist: Putin ordered the Trinidadians to eliminate the US
The fact that Omar Gonzales still gets Caps makes me absolutely sick. He has NEVER been good, I have NEVER liked him back there.
Thomas Leavitt He was really good, but like most American players, he must have gotten cocky because he has sucked the past few years
Actually you missed a important point about the revenge issue in 1990, Trinidad needed a win or a draw to go thru to the world cup and was upset by USA.
Woooooow SB Nation. I'm still not over it and y'all post this anyway. I'm hurt. Still gonna watch lol
I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, I'm sorry to say that we relished this. This was received with the same happiness as making the world cup itself at home. Lol. Excellent video.

Bear in mind: Landon Donovan warned in ESPN that if the USMNT did not qualify to the World Cup, they should fire their soccer coach right on the spot. He said this days before the match. Guess what happened. Also, guess who was their coach...
Hey SB Nation. I love these videos. Your next "the Worst" video should be about Orioles first baseman Chris Davis. His 2018 season was so bad I'm thinking about praying for him, and I'm not even an Orioles fan
