The worst USMNT match crushed a near-certain World Cup run in 1 day | 2017 USA vs. Trinidad & Tobago

  • When the U.S. faced off against Trinidad & Tobago, they really didn’t have to do much in order to advance to the 2018 World Cup. They had to do something though, and honestly...they didn’t. A win or draw would have sent them on to Russia, and they couldn’t do that. Even with a loss they had a decent shot, but nothing fell right for the Americans. They lost, they were eliminated, and now we wait, telling ourselves things will get better.

Something they didn't include in the video: Because Trinidad was already eliminated from WC contention, they didn't bother calling in many of their usual starters and opted to play more untested youth players instead.
That's right. The US somehow managed to lose a must-win game to Trinidad and Tobago's **B TEAM**

I'll take younger players over 30+ aged players any day of the week. National soccer is too disorganized to worry about systems and experience. You have youth, common sense formation, and kick azz focus on set pieces then you can go far.

It's easy to fail when you do no serious rebuilding for 14 years. Our 2002 World Cup squad was the best US team ever assembled, and instead of going out to identify and develop new stars of that caliber, US Soccer simply sat on their duffs and hoped new starts would fall out of the sky. What's worse, US Soccer learned nothing from missing the World Cup.

With the way the US played in CONCACAF qualifying, they had no business going to Russia. Yes, the video talks about how the US wouldn't have beaten the French, but let's talk about the other teams. The US also would not have beaten the English, Belgians, Germans, Koreans, Swedish, Japanese, Mexicans, or any other nation that got to the World Cup. The point is, the 32 teams who played in Russia last summer deserved to be there. The US did not.

Like when Honduras qualifies in 2010 over Costa Rica, then Costa Rica gets screwed over in Montevideo, forcing an unjust end to their Qualifying
Or like in 2014, when Mexico needed to win against Costa Rica and lost 2-1, and Panama needed to win, and was up 2-1 at the 88th Min before the US would score 2 stoppage time goals and eliminate Panama and save Mexico.
Then in 2018, for Mexico to have a chance to save the US but ultimately failed.

The only thing that would have stopped us is a lack of goals, particularly in open play. At that stage of our campaign (in which we eventually outgunned Honduras) we were reliant on Mile Jedinak penalties or Tim Cahill headers (neither of whom are playing international football anymore).

They lost because they had nothing at stake, while the opponents knew they had to win or be out of the world cup.. Honduras and Panama played possessed especially knowing that the US was trailing 2-1... Mexico and Costa Rica had the quality but being in the world cup already why would you risk injury on a meaningless match.. you're just playing for pride.
The US is at fault for playing as if they were assured victory just for showing up to the game... once they realized a loss was actually going to result in them being ousted from the world cup they tried to tie it with no time left... it was a team full of settlers that didn't deserve a chance at the world cup tbh.

That game that night had a buch of over-aged players that looked so gdamn lethargic that our GK'er couldnt even get to the far post on a 40 yard kick by T&T. Howard, Bradley, Cameron, Gonzalez, Altidore and Dempsey all looked totally exhausted.
This is also why I had NO issue with Landon Donovan being left off of the 2014 Cup roster, he was over the hill and Klinsmann and his staff knew it. We were already and older team going into that World Cup with guys like Jermaine Jones, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, DeMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron.

What an insane night. The combination of how poorly we played, the lucky goals in that game, both results with crazy improbable goals in them both going against us.

Memes USA would’ve lost 12-0, and that was all the dumb Mexico’s coach fault putting players in different positions, where they don’t play

Bear in mind: Landon Donovan warned in ESPN that if the USMNT did not qualify to the World Cup, they should fire their soccer coach right on the spot. He said this days before the match. Guess what happened. Also, guess who was their coach...

Project 2050, our USMNT was a runner up to Portugal but our Landon Donovan clones almost did the trick. Who could imagine us having to clone him 15 times to have a decent team would actuall work. It's just too bad that the Portuguese cloned Deco 5 times, thought they would have gone with ronaldo.
