Some j.i.s. screwdrivers would be handy there guys. Those are not philips screws but Japanese industrial standard.
I feel like I should get this on a T-Shirt because I say it so much.
Even with JIS bits, those damn things are always terrible. Impact driver is often the solution for those caps.
@@PeteFreyPeteFro Have you heard about JIS?
Building a car is never cheap. Keep up the great work
Exactly, especially when you want to do it right! Surprised they got such a clean S15 for the price they did. Reminds me of when I was waffling when R32 GT-Rs were going for 19k, still kicking myself for not picking one up and putting it in a storage unit until the USA 25 year rule went into affect for them.
Exactly lol!!
What I love about this channel is that for every job, you have the tools we all wish we had to complete our jobs! So satisfying and aggravating at the exact same time!
Yesssss! There would have to be a GTR’s worth of tools in that workshop! Haha

I couldn't have said it better myself. Lol
Actual JIS screwdrivers (I have some from Vessel) are great for not stripping those 90s era JDM screws

PT tackling those bolt on’s like a boss! Can’t believe how quick this build is coming together…keep up the creative content guys
Don't apologize to people who get triggered by stupid things so easily. We knew the intent behind the message, they are just bored and have no life!
I think the clarification was merited as I didn't know the intent. I also wasn't triggered, just not sure why they were calling it cheap.
100% they're missing context from the introduction video to this series.
@@turbo_brian It was mentioned why its the cheap S15 in earlier videos.
@@Mr99gsrteg lol man, you wrote like this is the first time they do something like using terms like "cheap" or "budget" in the names and the builds are not cheap or budget friendly. I like their content for sure, here I am writing, but they do it for the algorithm. It is simple.
When the poors want to be Ballin on a budget then get mad about it
Just a little bit of info - those stock injectors you pulled out are the 'bricktop brown' jdm units, making them 440cc, as opposed to the purple 370cc units. They typically flow enough for a full bolt on car.

13:50 They might not be Phillips screws, a lot of Japanese stuff from this period use JIS screws which look very similar but are different. Edit: I see someone else has said the same thing!
That is correct, they are not. They are JIS type. The amount of torque that the JIS are capable of transmitting is insane, compared to PH.
This is indeed true. I wish I had this info before stripping the screws on the secondary throttle valves on a Suzuki motorcycle several years ago.
I usually always replace them with torx or Allen head screws to save me the headache of removing them the next time.
@@868drive I just use JIS screwdrivers instead of phillips. They work better for both phillips and JIS screw heads than phillips screwdrivers. I kinda hate torx and allen heads cause you more sizes and they tend to stick in fasteners.
There's always something that has to go wrong, lol. At least the gasket replacement process wasn't too bad and didn't require anymore hard-to-find pieces! Thanks for the shoutout as always, glad the exhaust met your expectations even if it took longer to get there than we'd hoped!
Thanks PT and DP for always making killer content. Appreciate you guys!
This is one of the best videos, you can really tell all the hard work that goes into them.

Cheapest part about building a car is sometimes buying it. Doing it right, especially with something where parts are somewhat scarce is never cheap. Awesome car, great series!

@@SpeedAcademy2 cool so this is a scam
Seeing Connie just creepin' in the back is making me impatient...loving the S15 build though!
You guys obviously got it sorted but Phillips drivers are designed to cam-out when high torque is applied. This protects the structure/component at the expense of destroying the fastener. Since you guys work on so much JDM stuff it would be beneficial to have a set of DIN 5260 (aka the supersession to JIS) screwdrivers. They are 100% compatible with Phillips as well as a better match for JIS screws used on older Japanese vehicles. Vessel brand is a great choice and has tons of screwdriver options.
Guys got to say the AMSR style build video is catching , 50/50 blend seems like it
Why is it so hard to find a good mechanic when all the people on the internet know so much? :P
The most realistic RUclips channel on the internet.
Thanks for addressing the cheap build issue maturely - comments will always be across the map, and legitimate criticism doesn't have to be taken as an attack, but nothing is worse than RUclipsrs getting butthurt by comments. By far my favourite car RUclips channel here, and yes I am critical sometimes but that's because I'm invested in this!
3:20 Connie just sitting there looking pretty.
Word of warning - the Tomei dump sits super close to the rubber aircon drain, especially once you install new engine mounts. It will catch on fire with spirited driving, ask me how I know... GL
I saw that! Was planning to wrap it
looking forward to this channel finally getting a WELL deserved 1mil subs. the product you all put out (your videos) is second to none.
I can't afford most of the builds I watch on RUclips. Lol. But it is fun to watch. Can't wait to see more regardless of how much spend.
Loving your content guys, great job! Also the S15 front bumper in front of the Porsche looked killer, hope that’s a teaser for what’s to come on the Porsche refresh 🤞🏻
you guys always do it just right! love the attention to detail and pride in your craftsmanship. keep up the good work! i always get excited when i see a new speed academy upload!

Mid-week video ftw!!
It's just silly not to throw something like a 2871 .86 in there. Especially since it's already apart 🤦🏼♂️😉
Best thing I did with my S15 turbo swap to my blacktop SR20 at the time was getting the factory metal gasket for it!
Loving the build mate, skip the haters 😁 Can't wait for the next! Also @ 3:45 😂😂😂
Do you guys have any JIS screwdrivers? They would bite better in those screws. You can tell if the screw profile is JIS since they put a dot on the screw head (like a little dimple). My Japanese bikes use them and I would expect the cars would as well. Phillips are designed to walk out so you don't over-torque them whereas JIS use a straight sided cross.
Getting JIS bits made certain jobs on my car so much easier.
FYI Pete - depending on the power requirement of that larger fuel pump the stock wiring may not be able to keep up and cause significant pump voltage drop at high rpm;
a few shops recommended replacing factory wiring with thicker gauge wire and relay from the battery - triggered by the OEM pump relay/ECU
Along with that the extra voltage drawn by the bigger pumps can melt the factory plastic fuel pump top hat at the 12v pin;
Frenchy's Performance Garage make a nice drop-in billet top hat replacement with integrated DTM connectors

Dude, use Nord Lock washers the next time your turbo gets loose and blows out a manifold gasket.
Nice🔥💪💯👍🤝
Great video. Thank you for the upload and a fantastic walkthrough. Liked. I was curious if a battery relocation had consideration? I’m stoked and gathering the last bits for my next maintenance/upgrade for my project 89 240. Cheers!
I'm not triggered but...
CHEAP S15 BUILD...its in the title...
It should read as you clearly stated, CHEAP S15, BUILT RIGHT!
Anyway, love you lads and love the content.
i'd be interested in seeing the difference in whp/wtq between test pipe and cat. could be cool data.

Nice a Wednesday video 👍
Tony Angelo welded on those turbo to manifold nuts cuz he said they always come loose 😅 We'll see if welding is necessary or if lock nuts are good enough lol Very fun to watch 2 different SR20 builds at almost the same time.

I recommend you guys to use the locking tabs for the nuts, i use those nuts on my ca18 and even tho they are ovalized, they still came loose...

Seeing that new Tomei housing compared to my old Tomei housing and how hard it is to get on and off because there's no clearance for tools angered me lol
Also, I hope you have better luck than I did with those locking nuts. In my experience they can back off about a quarter turn before biting in. New lock tabs always eventually fail for me too. The best luck I've had was Stage 8 hardware.
Well since you have the turbo off might as well turbo upgrade that is one of my favorite cars

For the record, I am definitivelly not upset, mad or any other negative standpoint.
I was just poking a bit of fun cuz I love the fact that I have heard the "cheap" mantra in so many projects along my life that I always laugh a bit cuz I know how it goes LOL
Don't listen to any salty people out there, let them go the cheap route 10 times and come to an even higher bill at the end, keep up your approach to ALL cars!!!
P.S: You should really look into getting a good quality impact driver (manual, the one you actually hit with a hammer) for those phillips screws, or any other ones with a knack for stipping.
Laughing at any uproar over naming confusion. Sad you had to explain it. Haha
I watched a RUclips video the other day on a BMW 335i whereby the people building the car didn't change the turbo outlet housings/stock cats, just put on an exhaust. I quote 'Changing the outlet won't do much'.
I beg to disagree. In all my experience with JDM cars, specifically, JZ powered cars, changing the downpipe/dump pipe always gave great gains for the effort. Natural boost increases are always nice. Less heat soak too removing that cast iron piece.
I’ve done the turbo gasket so many times. You’re better off using a 4 layer gasket and aero locking nuts which has a ring which tightens when it’s hot, which is what you want, rather than a crush bolt which will expand when warm.
I eventually got sick of doing it and welded my turbo to my manifold and then the manifold cracked and the turbo eventually died anyway.
Might be worth doing a T28H upgrade also, my S14 ran 350bhp at the crank (303 at the wheels) with 256 cams, DE throttle body, Blitz FMIC and said turbo.
Cool build either way. :)
V band it with an Artec cast manifold.
Oof. That hole in the tunnel. I would've depinned that connector. Also sealant around the plug and seam.
Love the cars ,wish I could buy that supra , can you explain the term small little , thought they were the same 🤣🤣🤣🤣😋🤣🤣🤣
Toilet bowl cleaner will do wonders on that downpipe.
Naive question. It seems that there is a lot of linkage after the actuator rod. Doesn't that add in a bunch of variability to the setting? It seems like you were setting it to an exact milimeter.
But, How do you account for play in the linkage? or if say, it is bent?
Can you let us know which locking nuts you used? Also who is your tuner because I want to do that 24 tooth wheel. I think it was AEM's wheel?
That tunnel hole: Is a grommit enough to stop that from rusting??
@ 14:00 Betting the screws are actually JIS, not Philips which is why you had an issue with it camming out

Giving "cheap" and "simple" whole new meanings 😂
Cheap s15, build 😄
Criticism is good but when people just talk crap over a small detail in the title that’s just stupid, for me at least I watch this channel cuz I fucks with the people behind the camera and the cars that get built who cares what the title says. Great video tho guys and the Silvia is badass🔥
is the part number for the exhaust 113AN013
The car was cheap to buy, the mods are relatively attainable for the average Joe who is willing to forgo a balanced diet for the sake of a car.
I don’t get where people think this is expensive.
If you want an example of expensive modifications, watch Motive Video’s recent video 😅
Who is your tuner ? Info please thanks
I see we have the same torque wrench.
Beautiful car. Try not to put any thought to negative comments. Some folks are just idiots.
7:27 what kind of socket is that?
Please weld the nuts for the turbo just a tack and make a bracket from the turbo pipe to the transmission bolt. Thank me later.
Some high temp red Loctite with the spray on green primer on the stud treads did it for me.
No cat? You don't plan on street driving it?
😍
What made you chose drilling a hole in the floor over just routing it up through the hole for the shifter?
Length of the wire and the way it looks. Routing through the shifter seems a somewhat hack way of doing it. Grommet is the more OEM approach

surprised at the number of phillips head screws in this thing
Japan has its own standard of "phillips" screws. Using a western style screwdriver will make it more likely to strip the screw.
